Congrats, first breakages of 2022! Joking aside, for what its worth, I actually think you did a really good job of transforming the legs. I can't tell you how long I struggled with that but he's been in dino mode ever since!
That sucks about the breakage and tolerance issues! Otherwise, that Grimlock looks exceptional. What a shame. *Edit: Just finishing the video: What a great looking figure. It sucks so much ass about the tolerance and breakage issues. I steer clear of figures that have complications like that, otherwise I’d be ordering this version of Grimlock in a heartbeat.*
This is definitely late to the party, but I love the IDW designs and had this ordered from the start. I just received mine from TFSource and it came with replacement shoulders. They are a bear to move on their own, but hats off to Planet X for including replacement parts for the breakage issues people are having.
A dewclaw is the extra toe that is found on the inside of a dogs front leg. DuPont is one of the worlds largest producers of chemicals & science based products.
I kept Cacus in Dino mode for a long time and when I finally transformed it back to robot mode so I could get it inside his box I broke the shoulder ratchet in the exact same way you broke "yours". It's a well known issue so I got in touch with Planet X and they sorted me out through my supplier. I got the new ratchet today and I will assembled it tomorrow, they sent me some pictures with the step by step ratchet substitution and it doesn't seem that hard. This was my most expected TF action figure of 2021 and even though I also very much want the IDW Scavengers, I'm glad to have a full set of the IDW Dinobots. The Grimlock from the Scavengers is a bit different, the Planet X version is from IDW Maximum Dinobots and his hands are actually red on that 5 issues miniseries. I'm hopping MMC will eventually release the Scavengers together with a new Grimlock on the Reformatted line. I 100% agree with your critics and Cacus was number one on my subjective list of TF action figures of the year, objectively he won the best sculpt award of 2021. All this was before it broke because afterwards, even though I still love it, I wouldn't allow myself to revere it so much. If Planet X manages to properly engineer (correcting both the transformation and the tolerances) the rest of their IDW Dinobots while keeping the same exact quality on the sculpt, paint and articulation, they are definitively going to become my favorite set of Dinobots. Thanks for the review Mr. Skullface.
Mine broke as well and I'm currently awaiting replacement parts. Anybody actually done the replacment? I'm concerned about having to open up a figure myself that I paid almost two tons for.
I am really hyped about this figure but I need to learn how to lubricate joints because I've had nightmares everyday since my PX Ironhide's arm literally FELL OFF WHEN I TOUCHED IT. IT WAS BROKEN somehow, but i had only moved it once to put it in the shelf pose. But I still want an idw grimlock
This figure is SO good that I would want to have two of them; have one transformed and the other not, for display and play, but see them both at the same time. Greedy I know, right?!
Quick tip for people transforming this figure from robot to T.rex. transform the robot legs into the dinobutt first, then work on the top. The top is much easier to transform. Also, the balance issues in the dino mode come from him not using the articulated toes in the dino feet. This figure is tight. I think I lost 5 lbs transforming mine. Wait to see if Planet X will address the issues first. I jump in day one and got lucky, but there are tons of reports on breakage in the same spot.
What is the state of MP scaled IDW characters? I know there are various companies doing various characters in various scales but I want to say this is the first IDW MP scale character I've ever seen (though I admit I'm kind of lost in regards to who does what and at what scale if it isn't G1 MP or legends).
Thanks for looking at this Grimmy...For Me, It's my #1 of 2021 and that's about 20 that I bought last year. Everything about this Thing is Spectacular Except the Shoulder joints. The minute I figured the joints, I lubed them at the Outside Rachect and the Inner chest Rotation Connector. Now it's rachety Smoothe if that's a thing. Did I mention that this thing is Beautiful...Next up Bobby. TFC Tyrant, another uuhhaahh figure.
Great review Bobby, shame about the break. I have this and it is indeed scary how tight some of the joints are, particularly the waist and right shoulder. The knee issue you had in robot mode can be fixed, it’s just that the ratchet wasn’t quite in the correct position when tabbing the kneecap, it’s really tough to see if it’s exactly in the right place though because the clicks are pretty close together. Didn’t realise what it was until I’d transformed mine and going back into robot mode noticed the last click on one of the knees (left, same as yours) needed extra persuasion to go the last bit. Stunning figure, one of my favourites of 2021 but certainly one that people need to take extra care with.
That's tragic. I've been steadily coming around to this (IDW Grimlock not my thing) as it does look stunning. But I was wincing throughout most of the transformation and that breakage has seen me scurry away like a 'roach from the light. Feeling very torn right now.
Doesn't matter how much you try, a joint is gonna snap. I personally don't want to go through the review on this guy cause I'm scared to transform him a 3rd time and that exact shoulder is the problem. Back skirt is an issue on mine too. The right knee is how it's supposed to work. The knee cap isn't meant to come undone like Duran Duran. He can also do a Confused T-rex look. And the cheeks can rotate to look a little better.
I had the same knee issue with the wrong joint bending. What I ended up doing was holding down the knee plate against the tab of the joint that wasn't bending, and then bending the knee while holding down the knee plate. Doing this forced the proper knee joint to bend.
Great review, and first break of 2022. I was gonna get him but because TFsource took forever to get him and also just the qc problems I passed. But he looks great and I’ll probably get a MTMTE version and if everything is better on his I’ll continue maybe with they’re other Dynobots.
Great review. Not sure what to do about this guy. Looks amazing and I want it . But where to put it with a G1 MP collection? No place for it but I still want it!
It's a shame that such a beatiful figure has these issues. This is one counter example of the saying "It's better too tight than too loose". Balance is the key! Mine will stay in robot mode forever. Hope this gentleman can get a replacement. Thanks for the review, Bobby!
Kinda crazy how it broke. Compared to the Gcreation IDW Prime(one with all the panals). That one was solid pain in the ass. The figure bot n alt modes are freaking amazing though.

I'm on the fence for this bot, it's stunning but the issues man. If I go in on it I see myself doing a complete strip down and then sanding, lube and adjustment on every joint to get it to where it should be, far from ideal.
I'd say there is a good chance of Planet X doing another run of this guy (or a repaint) with some improvements to the joints. I'd just wait for that, or also wait and see if they are going to be providing replacement parts for any breakages.

I feel like this could have been one of the best figures of 2022 already just because of how amazing it looks, IF it had more time in the oven to iron out transformation and tolerances. As it is I feel like personally this is gonna be one of the most disappointing figures of 2022 just because of how damn close it is to being perfect. If you just put this on a shelf don’t pose it much and leave it there it will look BEAUTIFUL, but as a figure and transformer it fails. It doesn’t transform without flexing plastic it breaks very commonly from what I’m hearing and many things are way way too tight. Other then that it’s pretty much perfect which sucks because it’s so close to being there imo. Just disappointed it feels like it’s rushed especially with the tolerances, Planet X knows how to give a figure great tolerances but didn’t on one of their best pieces
I have the figure myself and I think it's wonderful to look at But transformation Tolerance Are not great I have mine In Tyrannosaurus Rex mode and have no desire to transform it back due to Possible breakage😅
