Are Internet Trolls Psychopathic? | Sadistic, Narcissistic & Antisocial Personality

  • This video answers the question: Can I describe the typical personality profile of the internet troll? This would be the typical profile and any particular person who engages in internet trolling behavior wouldn't necessarily have the different characteristics I'm going to describe in this video. What is internet trolling? It is a deliberate attempt to create conflict and distress by communicating inflammatory, provocative, and menacing comments to victims. An Internet troll is someone who is generally recognized as being antisocial and malicious.
Psychopathy and sadism both predict internet trolling behavior. Internet trolling is associated with primary, but not secondary psychopathy. Primary psychopathy is characterized by traits like being callous, manipulative, being a pathological liar, lacking in remorse, empathy, and guilt.
With secondary psychopathy we see somebody who's impulsive, irresponsible, neurotic, emotionally reactive, they tend to engage in criminal behaviors, and they are sensation-seeking.
With psychopathy, cognitive empathy again is intact and affective empathy is not. Internet trolling has an association with affective empathy and cognitive empathy. As cognitive empathy increases, we see an increase in internet trolling behavior, but only when psychopathy increases as well.
Internet trolling has an association with both direct sadism and vicarious sadism. Direct sadism is when somebody enjoys directly hurting or humiliating other people and vicarious sadism is when the enjoyment is derived from watching other people being hurt or humiliated.
Grandiose narcissism has a positive association with Internet trolling, but vulnerable narcissism does not have an association.
March, E. (2019). Psychopathy, sadism, empathy, and the motivation to cause harm: New evidence confirms malevolent nature of the Internet troll. Personality and Individual Differences, 141, 133-137.

A few years ago I read an article about internet trolls. It mentioned four key points:
    1) If you argue with a troll, it wins.
    2) If you insult a troll, it wins.
    3) If you try to reason with a troll, it wins.
    4) The ONLY thing a troll can't stand is being ignored.

Yes! Coincidentally, this is a topic I've been thinking of asking about myself. I actually found myself researching the (known) psychology of trolls today.
It's all very well for those who have never known a person to be adversely affected by targeted online harassment to claim that "It's just a bit of fun" or that children especially "Should just ignore being trolled online" - but it seems to me to be one of the more insidious issues of our time. I would seriously challenge the assertion that it is "harmless" and ask those who've never experienced it to really consider how they would feel if they were taunted incessantly, no matter where they went if they were a child &/or a psychologically fragile person for whatever reason.

I notice that whenever I've dug deep enough to find out who someone is, and we're never as anonymous as we'd like to think we are, there's an illusion of anonymity but if someone has beyond just rudimentary internet skills, that anonymity goes away, and I use my real name and a real photo because I never once thought about bullying someone from the safety of a rick and morty still, and a made up super meta handle. I think I do that so when I do get death and rape threats, quite detailed ones in some cases, I can say "Well who's the real coward here, me for leaving an opinion that isn't even meant to be provocative or to cause a ripple of outrage or the person hiding behind a cartoon and a handle, so for awhile I decided to leave some comments that weren't untrue, but were more likely to anger certain people, and I went where there'd be the most Schadenfreude (enjoyment in witnessing the pain of others from the safety of an anonymous spectator's pov,) Prison documentaries seem to be popular for trolls and I noticed how much I preferred to watch them over anything else when I was in rehab, until I became friends with people who had served lengthy sentences for non violent crimes, and said how you don't even get to choose if you're in the documentary or not, because you lost all your rights, and I thought about how I'd feel with a camera in my face when I was just doing my daily chores, or sitting in my cell, and I'd feel like an animal in the zoo and I don't like zoos, they seem cruel to me, when I was little I saw kids taunting a panther and I still to this day feel anger and sadness over that panther and the same kind of sadness goes for some of the severely mentally ill prisoners I'd see on the show or the ones who'd cut themselves just to get out of solitary confinement. Truly cutting to the bone like that takes real desperation, and I feel empathy for a lot of these men, usually minorities, who are serving a sentence for things I've seen rich white kids get long term treatment at a rehab facility and an ankle monitor for, or women who desperately miss their kids, and who need rehab more than they need prison time, because all prison will do is make them smarter addicts with more connections. I got a bunch of rape threats from one individual and noticed a man with his real name and photo coming to my defense, then the troll said something disgusting, racist, and just over the top horrific, and I found more often than not, that when I'd find out their identity they were almost always women over 30 living in rural areas who had children. That was worrying, like the case where a 13 yo girl hung herself, after being catfished and taunted by the mother of a girl she had grown apart from at school. The mother truly assumed that under the guise of a cute boy her age, that she could say things I can't repeat to this girl, and I went through such a severe depressive episode when I was around that age, that I too tried in earnest and almost succeeded in committing suicide at 14 and my heart broke for that girl, every mean comment feels like the end of the world when you're that age, it felt so permanent and I was way more impulsive obviously, now if someone insults me I don't even acknowledge it unless it's full of spelling errors and is clearly written by a child, but a lot of these stay at home moms in rural areas of the US ended up being the trolls who left me the most vile comments. Go figure.

Just a thought on vulnerable narcissism on the internet: being anonymous can give a vulnerable narcissist a vehicle for expressing their sadistic fantasies? As I said I had an encounter with a very sadistic but vulnerable type individuaI, if I am so believe what he said his diagnosis was. This individual loved creating chaos and sirting back to watch it all play out but without wanting to draw attention to himself. He could keep the sadism up longer that way.

Then they would say yes, I would write them but I would get zero replies back, they were just playing with my emotions, very sadistic. Lately however I have been meeting with a group of women near by my house and I made new acquaintances and some friends plus I have been mingling more with my old friends from old times in university, thus I dont feel lonely anymore, besides I now enjoy my solitude and I dont feel like I have to bond emotionally with trollers nor anyone on the internet. Thank you Dr Grande!

People not replying is not sadistic lol it's indifference, it's a rejection, it's painful for you. But if they don't want to respond that's up to them. It's their right to not connect with someone. They're just being honest with themselves and with you. The only thing I think is wrong with that is that they should have been upfront with you from the start instead of leading you on like that, that's just wrong and rude. But it's better late than never. Whenever something like that happens to me I just think thank goodness they didn't make me waste my time! I wouldn't want to be friends with someone who has that kind of lack of interest anyway.

Interesting, I hadn't imagined that internet trolling was a topic of research. Before the days of internet I had a cousin that got his kicks out of provoking random strangers. He always treated me extremely well, I guess because my father was his father's oldest brother but his destructive behavior helped to land him in Attica Prison. 2 years there cured him of much of his antisocial behavior and he became a relatively stable family man.

Many psychopaths can behave, they choose to do so so they can function comfortably in society and choose to not cause trouble to others, they can be very reliable and trustworthy. A psychopath can be a hero if his mood and circumstances are right. But if they start down a wrong path they tend to stay on that path until they are stopped and then they can make a conscious decision to do something else. "Trolling causes more people to become trolls"
"Abuse and bullying causes children to become abusers and bullies"
It's a classic case of abuse and gaslighting which causes the creation of a broken individual who imitates the 'strength' which broke them.
Everybody knows that bullies are weak and pathetic but at one point they themselves were victims of a bully. Before they themselves became a bully they were just a regular person who was suffering under the hands of this tyrannical individual until they lost all of their self love. They still have their self-respect they just lost the ability to love themselves because nobody else does in their mind.

i had a troll who literally lived and woke up every day to harass me, my friends and anyone associated with me. for years until he became fully homeless and destitute.
so, in those years i gathered a lot of data on him. his troubled background going back as far as his junior-high years. always at war with everyone around him. i realized, "his trolling is not specifically about me or anything i've done." i was just his most recent focus in a long string of victims he had harassed either online or in-person. including the stalking and threatening of women he had fixated on who did not return any interest in him.
as you stated, there was no reasoning with him. he lied about so many 'accomplishments' in his life that it would have taken 8 lifetimes to do all the things he claimed. and his 5th-grade reading/writing skills told the real truth about his claims to have several master's degrees. but to this day he still clings to this narcissistic disorder, fantasy-life where he is everything from a golden-glove boxing champ to a war-hero in special-ops and pastor of a huge church at age 17.
what i found and employed quickly was the following.
    a) i did not ever bother to engage in replying to him. not in video, text, email, facebook.. nothing. no matter what horrible lies he spewed, i did not engage him or his insanity. what he wanted was to drag me into his mire. but i refused.
    b) i went about my life. i enjoy the higher priorities that made for a great life, for me. if i had free time, i spent it either making money or enjoying my friends and surroundings. what i didn't do was sit around stewing over some recent slander he'd come up with. all the people who truly know me considered him a pathetic clown. rebutting him was not necessary.
over time, he had so many enemies against him and spent so much time on his hatred that his own life simply imploded due to failing to bother to earn a living. in the end, he destroyed himself wasting all his energy trying to put his boot on someone else's neck. he brought himself to ruin and yet, even as he walks to the next homeless shelter for the night, he will never admit his messed up life is his own fault.

I think when it gets to that point they should be blocked from channel. We reported her for harassment, but I highly doubt RUclips cares. I thought she must have a very dismal life and a lot of free time on her hands.

Great video. Dense with information. A lot to consider. I'll have to watch it again. Having had experience with narcissistic family members, I get the impression that trolling is positively correlated with grandiose narcissism. And, although there's no way to prove it, I think most of them are what I would call deflated narcissists, i.e. they have been so toxic in their real lives that they have literally run out of targets. Nobody who knows them in person will have anything to do with them beyond necessary superficial encounters anymore. So, they move their game to the internet. This is the only way they can get fed. They follow news outlets and high profile people who post about controversial topics and find empathetic people to play their passive aggressive gams with. Everything they post is designed to get emotional reactions from people. I've noticed that one tool they use on fb is to click the Ha Ha reaction icon under a post about something serious. Kids in Yemen are starving, Ha Ha. California is on fire again, Ha Ha. These are sick individuals who don't know they are sick. You are right about vulnerable narcs not being trolls though. The vulnerable narcs I know avoid social media altogether. It's too risky for them. They would have to reveal way too much of themselves.

The difference is intent to cause chaos, intent to derail, intent to cause emotional pain in the other for personal pleasure. Otherwise, an argument is just an argument. Intentional insults can derive in momentary lack of empathy from frustration and desire to vent, but that does not equate trolling.
I believe people saying a stranger online is trolling is assuming the worst intent of someone they can't see in person to more accurately gauge. I believe calling others trolls is heavily over-used, usually misused, or perhaps even said by the actual real troll.
Avoid arguments online. We can't look people in the face/eyes or hear their voice. The sheer lack of interpersonal connection in online disputes about a touchy subject is usually a formula for disaster that should be avoided.

I very much enjoyed Dr. Grande's explanation of the troll mindset. It's extremely useful for dealing with what amount to bedbugs for the Internet. The maladjusted personalities who practice trolling make an otherwise enjoyable learning journey on the Internet from concept to concept a test of one's endurance, distracting the attention and wasting the energy of those genuinely desiring to learn. I am not at all surprised that there is a correlation between internet "trolling" and sadism/psychopathy although I would argue that a distinction should be made between trolling and bullying/harassment which is what a lot of it really boils down to, hence putting the word in quotation marks. I find that in the parts of the internet where this sort of behavior is most common such as 4chan and discord, there are a lot of young men who have piss poor social skills but are quite intelligent. They show psychopathic traits but I find it hard to believe that it's primary psychopathy. If you dig beneath the surface, you'll find that almost all of them were bullied for being awkward/nerdy and socially outcasted. I strongly believe that upbringing led to their dearth of social skills, low agreeableness, lack of empathy, and "sadistic" behavior such as trolling, bullying, and ruthlessly mocking people for even slight imperfections. That would imply that they were shaped by their environment more than genetics which is the opposite of primary psychopaths.

It's a lot like paranoia. They conclude that somebody is out to get them (or to get all of us), based on scant evidence. Our brains are designed to see a threat when none exists, rather than to see no threat when one may exist. That is the safest rule. But conspiracy believers take this beyond the norm, apparently having lost the ability to ask "How likely is this?" at every point in their chain of logic. They lack the necessary balance to evaluate the evidence logically.

Depends on the troll and what they are doing.
If they are asking about the couch auction on the livestream? They are probably just harmless pranksters.
If they are sending the gruesome death photos that leaked onto the internet to their loved ones? Yeah, that's pretty sadistic and psychopathic.

Man this video could have changed my life 5 years ago. Although I doubt I had the insight to appreciate it.
One counterpoint I would make regarding narcissism specifically is that anonymity allows the vulnerable to behave with grandiosity. This would allow the narcissist to behave in a manner closer to the ideal self, which they may be unable to express outside of the internet.

I've always loved a good conversation. Especially with those who disagree. Trying to understand their reasoning and logic seeing the parts we can agree and parts we do not agree. As the end of day hopefully both participants leave that encounter with something new and a bit better version of themselves.
Now with trolls. I've engaged in discussion with few of those as well. To me it seems they are just so full of themselves that absolutely nothing can be gained. They preach this and that and if that doesn't work the absolutely childish insults starts pouring in. As a lack of a better expression it's like talking with a three year old with a temper tantrum when he is not getting what he wants. To me it's just sad. I feel somewhat sorry for such a person. What a waste of everyones time.
