You can definitely get away with breaking rules and Alex is certainly an accomplished photographer, but these are some of the worst tips or advice to give beginners (aka people who would watch a "how to shoot in midday" tutorial). 1. Alex is an "adventure" photographer and never uses a tripod since he finds them to get in the way so he needs to shoot wide open at f4 to reduce shutter speed and blur. But the average person will find it very difficult to shoot landscape vistas and get clean shoots with such a shallow depth of field. You should stay closer to f8 - f11 or maybe even f16 if you have a foreground subject and want the back sharp too. YMMV, but this is pretty common practice. 2. Shooting in to the sun is kind of sketch. Unless you want JJ Abrams lens flares and discoloration on your images or silhouetted subjects since the dynamic range of the image will be huge. 3. Telling people to overexpose their images seems kinda nuts. In most cases it is better to shoot underexposed. You can recover shadows a stop or two but blown out highlights is lost data. If you want to create the overexposed effect this can be done with software. Again Alex is a professional, but his advice is something I would take with a grain of salt as many people might leave a vacation with ruined photos.
This video is sketch mixed with some troll bait :) *taps side of nose* Someone needs to make a response video showing their overexposed, flared, f4 images and tout them as Alex inspired :)
Love the tips! Super interesting that Alex overexposes in midday light situations. I’ve always been so hesitant to blow out the highlights but I’m going to give it a try.
Such an awesome video! I loved hiking Lake 22 when I lived there and no this vid makes me miss it all! But seriously great video with two awesome legends!
Appreciate the videos guys! I have recently been trying to get into videography with just my iphone 6s and all of your videos are really helping me out! We recently had a baby and I look forward to putting all our little trips on camera! Peace.
Please who helps you out with your video editing if you’ve doing it by yourself please how do you go about it cause I will need to learn how to go about video editing.thanks
This is my first time watching a dude/bro YT vid. Last too I think. Lots of valid criticism in the comments below so I will just add that there are no photos...none.
I was like "No! Awful timing!" because I just got back from a trip to Utah, ended up photographing Arches NP and Canyonlands NP in harsh, clear-sky, 99-degree sunlight. But you guys are doing this in Washington, with wonderful clouds and stuff. Man, I love clouds. I don't think enough people appreciate clouds. But I think I did okay. Shot everything on 5 frame exposure bracketing. I might have rescued some shots after merging the exposures in Lightroom.
I’m wondering where the final photos are? I was really excited to see the results with this horrible weather conditions for landscape photos... I love you guys from moment but this really was everything but no „how to“ explanation video :-)
I was hoping to get something out of this video about "Midday Light" and harsh shadows and high contrast. So, the title can be a little misleading. Also no results?! Almost 99% of photography videos I watched show the photos taken. Nothing except an iPhone close up in this one.
Javier Flores well that’s just what the video is. They didn’t title it “how to shoot in harsh light”. That would be a poor choice for any photographer looking for good lighting. I mean one of the very tips Alex said was “watch the forecast”
I used the link at the top ruclips.net/user/redirect?v=Rk-ZtzZsujc&event=video_description&q=https%3A%2F%2Fsummer.alexstrohl.com%2Fdiscount%2FMOMENT&redir_token=CeIrlTN0lXYzWOVZeD8dJZws9yl8MTUyOTU5MjU0OUAxNTI5NTA2MTQ5
F4? Not good advice for beginners. For landscape if I don't have for ground, I use my sharpest aperture and that is different for every lens. Mine is f5.6. If I have good for ground, then I use f11 or f16 on tripod.
there is a reason for that, if you overexpose you cant bring the burned overlit area's however you can always bring up the shadows (you will of course have some quality loss) but its better then having burned areas that you cant fix in post!
Another Vlog with another AMAZING Photographer! Who is going to check out Alex's workshop!? 🔥
“You guys look like you know how to use DSLRs” lol 😂😂
that made me laugh a bit haha. They were super super nice tho

Right on
I find it easier to overexpose just a little and bring it back. I get less noise that way. I also only shoot fx raw. So idk

Alex and Andrew, two legends. Dope.
Really enjoyed this. Alex seems so chill.
Such an awesome video! I loved hiking Lake 22 when I lived there and no this vid makes me miss it all! But seriously great video with two awesome legends!

Just bought my first Moment Lens. I got the New Wide Lens for the iPhone X
Evanbear1 how did you order? I have the lense in my cart and it says it doesn't ship until July.
I purchased it but same as you it won’t arrive till July.
Evanbear1 ah bummer. Thanks for the reply. Hope you enjoy it man!
What equipment did you use to film this?
Evanbear1 canon c100 and an iPhone 8 with moment lenses
Anyone know the brand of the orange bag?
Beauty spot!
Where is the result?
This is the closest I can get to a Caleb & Shawn vlog in 2018.
Throwback to the Lake 22 vlog: vimeo.com/50249606
Love this style video!
Thanks Chadwick!
sweating out here to make use of his tips on sunlight on 30 degree celsius
so im 8 minutes in and still no real tips .. other than use an app.

Moment: How to shoot at Midday Light: shot in a regular camera on an overcast day, Good job! (Note the sarcasm)
Javier Flores well that’s just what the video is. They didn’t title it “how to shoot in harsh light”. That would be a poor choice for any photographer looking for good lighting.
I mean one of the very tips Alex said was “watch the forecast”
Certainly different from Tom Heatons vlogs, infact on what i briefly saw here there's zero comparison:)
How do I get the $30 off? All I see is the regular price of $129. Thank you.
Nick Fichter if you used the link in the bio of this video?
I used the link at the top ruclips.net/user/redirect?v=Rk-ZtzZsujc&event=video_description&q=https%3A%2F%2Fsummer.alexstrohl.com%2Fdiscount%2FMOMENT&redir_token=CeIrlTN0lXYzWOVZeD8dJZws9yl8MTUyOTU5MjU0OUAxNTI5NTA2MTQ5
i saw the word discount and figured that was the right one. Is there another?
Nick Fichter just go to checkout, it’ll be $129 until you’re at the last screen, then it’ll show $99.
ok thank you for your help - I got in, looking forward to the workshop

Hey moment! I need the new wide please! 😉
we ran out
you can find all our expected ship dates here - help.shopmoment.com/article/72-when-will-my-order-ship
weird in his workshop he says he underexposes hmmm
there is a reason for that, if you overexpose you cant bring the burned overlit area's however you can always bring up the shadows (you will of course have some quality loss) but its better then having burned areas that you cant fix in post!
i know that I watched the workshop, but in this video he says he overexposes
The under expose was during sunrise and sunset. Here it's harsh light :)
I thought he was trolling the entire time but then looked in the description....lol
haha
Wth? Alex Strohl is on every youtube channel (adorama, creatorclass and your channel)
“Mid day overcast light”
I do not believe he does not go over f4 in landscapes...
Hope i’ll get free moment lens. 🙏🏻🙂
RA Vlogs why would you?! Get a job
Tom Kro i have a job, just wanted to join their contest in film making to get free moment lens. That’s it 🙂
f4? Landscape? Interesting...
I think this is a troll video

Grandi
Too sharp, too clinical. That was odd
„...Shooting mobile or shooting camera is the same thing...„ hahhahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahahahhahahahaha
This has to be hands down the worst vlog ever.
Chirag Joshi haha thanks bro
u didnt even mention nd-filters o.O
Indeed. I was waiting for some actual advice...rather than watching people mess around on a hike, with some epic self promotion...
And that guy should buy a proper bag
When does the video begin? I went five minutes with nothing but useless banter then stopped.
