I am that quiet test knitter. I really enjoy test knitting cause typically I learn something new, and it forces me to finish a project. I appreciate hearing the designer side. I will notify the designer if I can't complete or if I am running behind or if I'm having a problem with something. You have definitely given me more to think about how I can be a better test knitter.

totally get your point about test knitters! I just recently did my first test knit (as a knitter, not designer) for some socks! I was really, really happy with the outcome, posted a video on tiktok and linked the designer, posted on ravelry, and posted in my instagram stories. The designer on the other hand didn't follow me back, so they never saw my instagram post! I also sent them an email with some notes I had regarding the pattern and letting them know I would be happy to provide more info, as I wasn't sure what they truly needed from me. Haven't heard back via e-mail either. There was supposed to be an Instagram group that I wasn't added to either :( So, while I am super happy with the finished product, I'm also a little sad I didn't get that "appreciation" from the designer?
So idk, I feel like test knitting can be a little disappointing from either side :(

Yarn Pond is great for running test knits. Some people still ghost but on the back end designers can rate and leave notes about this so when choosing test knitters you can be aware upfront how many tests the knitter has completed and if designers recommend working with them.

I’m conflicted on the test knitter thing- on the one hand you’re giving them a pattern, probably going to shout them out on social media, and some designers even provide yarn for the project, and there’s an agreement for them to in return knit the item and provide feedback, check for mistakes and usually provide photos of the finished item and maybe post about the pattern to help build hype for it… but on the other hand it’s a lot of work for very little compensation so basically they’re doing you a favor and they aren’t getting paid other than getting a pattern for free, and if yarn isn’t provided then it’s a large cost on their side to buy the yarn plus a lot of time & effort. People’s lives can be hectic & unpredictable so I get the ghosting thing too, but I would at least expect them to let you know if they’re dropping out so you can get another tester to replace them or at least know not to bother following up with them. Maybe part of the agreement should be that if they drop out without communicating with you that they won’t be eligible for future test knits, and give an incentive for finishing the test knit like 3 more of your patterns for free maybe and a guaranteed Instagram post tagging and mentioning them? Might improve the ghosting/not finishing issue but I’m sure it will still happen.

I was going to mention this. If i knit for myself, then i Can freely adapt (luckily most designer are very kind about that). One test knit i did, Said i had to knit both fingerless gloves or i would have to pay for pattern, they were exactly the same and extremely poorly designed for fit. Some designers also only share part of the pattern, seems very distrusting and hard to get an overview. Once i signed up for an up and coming designer (now a few booksnpublished) and she didnt even want my input, i was basically only asked to boost the ravelry and ig hype -felt phony. I do love test knitting, and most designers are so kind, and i love to give feed back which Can potentiale help future knitters. I usually hate deadlines, but most deadlines are Nice enough to accomodate life and what might else happen. Lately i have some times felt used, almost to the point i felt like not promoting the pattern, but know what to look for. (Test group is my absolute preferencer Way, that Way i Can see others progress and cheer, also i Can report the bugs i find and see bugs others have spotted - just feels motivational and efficient, rather than email). Some designers do offer extra patterns as compensation, which I feel builds loyalty and motivational, even if I probably will not use the patterns and just jump on the next test knit. I rather have the positive motivation of getting extra patterns, than eg knit for a designer who only shares part of design until one gets to a certain point, sometimes I like to see the whole pattern and not knit blindly, also it feel distrustful and does build loyalty. Also sometimes it is difficult to tell designer life is not coorporating, sometimes you hope to catch up than a third thing happens and it is embarrassing to let designer know. Weekly check ins helps, why I loved the audited testing group on ravelry, then made sure designers meet some requirements and that testers would check in, worked nicely, even if feeling a bit monitored some times. Well as long as some of us are willing to test knit for free I guess that is what pay we get. Supply and demand, also I must like it since I jump from one to the next, rather than knit stuff in my que.

I agree with your feelings about test knitting. At the best least you can say that life has changed and you won’t be able to complete the project.
But at the same time, I wonder (as someone not at all involved in pattern creating) if it is really necessary if a pattern has been professionally tech edited? I just always assumed that it was a part of the marketing because then a pattern gets talked about online and photos go up with different colors/yarn combos and the whole range of sizes. I get maybe 1 or 2 testers, but I’ve seen some designers have 4 testers for each size (maybe they are factoring in people not completing the tests) and i just wondered if it is a non-negotiable part of the pattering creating process.

I just got two books for knitted items. I haven't worked them so can't advise on the quality of instructions, but they are both adorable looking. Woodland Whimsy by Mariia Ermolova is amigurimi-type creatures and clothing for them. And the Gnomes of Grimblewood by Sarah Schira.

The velvet vest is stunning! I’m so excited for the shawl pattern because I’m also a quilter and as soon as you held up your swatch I gasped and said it’s a maple leaf block! When you started explaining your pattern idea I even got more excited 😂 I feel the same as you on test knitting. A designer is choosing you to knit for them to help check for mistakes, sizing etc if something happens you should contact the designer and explain instead of dropping out without any explanation.

I have recently been a test knitter for Inglesknittinglab and I loved the process. I was disappointed that other test knitters didn't communicate via the suggested process so we could share the work and see what concerns we all had. At the end, there was an obvious lack of finished photos to see. I found that sad for the designer, she did a lot of work. We didn't receive the completed pattern up front, it was sent in sections, not on purpose, the pattern was still in progress for some sizes. That may be a way to see how committed test knitters are. I do feel for you, I now know just how much work goes into pattern writing, separate from the actual design, but your experience makes me realise how common it is.

I hadn't come across you on social media before, but RUclips suggested this video to me, and when I saw that vest in the thumbnail, I clicked on it right away. What an amazing vest, I absolutely need one like that in my wardrobe! I love herringbone pattern. In the video, you talked about the challenges of test knitting, and that's one of the reasons I’ve never applied to be a test knitter for any project before-I just couldn’t commit and be absolutely sure. Since my autumn this year is not as busy as before, I’m definitely applying to test knit for this one! I’ve also followed you on Instagram and RUclips. Your designs are stunning! I have a few test knits for 2 different designers , one uses slack and I love it. I often listen to podcasts of well known influencers who very often not meet the test knot deadline and it makes me sad to know that others have not been chosen and were motivated to do it. Yes life happens and communication is key. I wish you that people committing to a test knit are really committed . ON key element for me is not signing for it when the deadline is too short

Did you spin it woolen/worsted/somewhere in between?😊 what was the twist per inch? Why do I ask-I would love to spin the yarn for this vest and have it ready for pattern release. I love your designs. Thank you for the beautiful patterns that you make available.

I agreed with someone else down the way that without some form of compensation, it's voluntary and hard to enforce. I think people should be able to let you know they can't test, but I get how that doesn't help you've already sent your pattern. I've stopped test knitting so much due to the time restraints, social media asks, and slack was a lot last time I did a test... I do understand why you'd want it though- more manageable with a communication hub. Finally, I saw James Watts talk about this and I admired him for saying it, but as some testers knit, they may find it's over their level or not for them, and they may not want to finish it. I thought that was real honest and admirable. Because I've had a test knit where I felt that way too. I do think at the very least, the testers should write and tell you they're no longer interested. I think your patterns are lovely. Keep feeling better~ Kimberly

Bella, as a test knitter I understand how frustrating it must be when knitters don’t participate. I value the process because of the interaction among knitters. I’m sorry you’re experiencing this. Perhaps in the future you’ll have better luck. On unspun, I love it! Especially Nutiden. I’d love to hear your thoughts about substituting unspun for standard yarn. I have quite a bit in my stash and would love to use it.

A beautiful episode as always. I can understand your frustration with test knitters. To have them drop out and ghost you isn’t okay. They should at least say something. Having been a test knitter pretty extensively myself I can say there’s so many hours that go into combing through a pattern, reworking when mistakes are found, giving feedback to the designer, taking photos that the designer can use-it’s really involved work with a lot of hours. And what is given in exchange doesn’t even come close to compensation. I think if a test knitter isn’t being paid-then there’s no way of enforcing them to have a finished project. If that were the case you would simply withhold the pay. I test knit because I want to support a designer I love, not because there’s really anything in it for me. I think most would feel the same.

    • @thekindles1183
      @thekindles1183 3 месяца назад +2

I second this. I have tested and when I couldn't complete have told the designers, they've all been understanding, but it's hard when your day to day doesn't allow for completion of the item. I've felt I let them down, but when you have a family to tend too, sometimes it introduces other factors. - Kimberly

I've been that test knitter, being new to test knitting I didn't realize the commitment at the time. I think communication is key, but sometimes people don't want to use/ don't know how to use slack. Also, I think it's totally fine to enforce a "test ban" policy. Like, if someone doesn't finish - they don't get to test knit again. I have since decided to focus on opening my shop and making garment samples, otherwise I would apply, but I also need to be realistic with my own time expectations. I think it's very common, and you can always have them sign a sort of agreement that they won't share or distribute your IP as part of the process. Also, building in positive reinforcement, like featuring test knits and social media sharing (I am new to your channel so you probably already do this)... For one test knit I completed, the designer gifted me the final ravelry design and another design of hers as a bonus. It definitely made me want to test knit for her again.

Both are cold areas, sheep need protection from the elements. Sure they have shelter, however its not heated. The Machega sheep live in Spain. Totally different climate. If it's done when we feel these things coming on it usually knocks it out. 3 times daily for 15 minutes until issue totally clears. 8f we miss that just do until it clears. Having published a few knitting patterns myself, I did experience the same issues with a couple of people never getting back to me after receiving the pattern for the testknit. Gosh! I just stumbled upon your channel. I also followed you on IG. I understand your concerns about test knitters. I have observed that folks have the best intentions (for the most part) and they hate to let others down so they just kind of ghost or avoid. It’s really too bad. You seem pretty reasonable and understanding. But I wonder if it’s human nature to do that? Anyway, I’ll watch for the test knit calls and hope I am selected at some point. Great episode!

  • @verylikecheryl
    @verylikecheryl 3 месяца назад

Yes, you need to know if someone drops out in case there’s a need and still time to sub in a replacemrnt tester for that size? I’ve done one test knit and knit monogamously and gave all the feedback I could because I wanted to help. I would never ghost a designer. Not everyone thinks like that. James N Watt’s attitude that he shared in his podcast is one way to preserve your peace of mind, maybe? He says, to testers just do what you want. Testing is a big win for him, all things considered, so if some people just come for the free pattern, then 🤷🏻‍♀️, good luck to them x

I’ve only applied for 2 test knits because I am completely aware of what my life tends to be like and I’m not good with deadlines. They irk me. Both times I was certain that unless somebody died, I would be able to finish in the allotted time and I was excited for the garments. I wasn’t chosen for one for reasons I completely understand. I don’t have a social media presence and that is a big part of choosing who should test knit for you. It helps keep up the hype and enthusiasm for the pattern when it comes out. I really appreciated knowing that was the reason. The second one is a cute little accessory I was absolutely sure I could complete and we are in the middle of it right now. The test discussion is being held in Discord. I was surprised to have been chosen, but happy to have been so I’m definitely not going to ghost anyone. Ghosting seems to be the default for people these days. It takes more courage to just come out and say why one is severing a relationship (whatever sort it is or whatever the reason), and people tend to be more discomfort averse now than previously. It’s sad that our social skills have gone so far downhill.

  • @knittingwithlizandaustin

Completely agree with your sentiments regarding test knitting. I can understand how testers do volunteer their time and sometimes, also their own materials, but you designers spend so much time writing out and troubleshooting your pattern. And, for the two of yours I’ve participated in, you’ve given a very healthy deadline. If someone can decide to spend hours testing on your pattern and hard work, they can spend five minutes letting you know if something comes up. My opinion is that testers who ghost are stealing. I’m sorry you (and other designers I’m friends with) have this experience so often. It’s good to bring up this conversation.
I love all of your designs as always, and “Velvet Moss” is fantastic. That texture is so unique and interesting. Your quilt shawl swatch is beautiful. :) I think that issue has happened to every designer. I haven't released a pattern in a hot minute, but I remember a bunch of people never even casting on and ghosting me. Let's face it, they just wanted a way to get a free pattern. I wonder if you can let people know that you are opening up enrollment in test knitters in X-amount of days and they will receive the pattern once they give you a picture of their materials as proof that they are ready? Or, if you have certain "trusted" test knitters, you can give it to them without proof? Maybe I'm too strict, lol.

  • @thegrynne

I've never participated in a test knit, and I personally have very conflicted and complicated feelings about it. I think the work of indie designers is undervalued and underpaid, but I also appreciate that in order to be even remotely profitable to be an indie designer, it relies heavily on the unpaid labour that test knitters willingly donate to their favourite designers, and that unspoken contract between designer and test knitter who is volunteering their time and energy is diverse between different designers and also under-negotiated. I wouldn't take it too personally if a certain percentage of test knitters "ghost" after receiving the pattern - they're not paid employees, and some probably don't consider it an obligation once chosen as a test knitter to "check in" if they are unable to go through with the test, as much as that would be the polite thing to do.

Thanks for asking re test knitting ghosting. So sorry that's happening. I would be a reliable test knitter and would dearly love to test knit your Velvet Moss vest, however I limit my social media to You Tube and Ravelry, so Instagram and Slack are out of my chosen tech realm. Personally, I've only test knit for Ailbiona McLochlain thus far, the reasons being that I didn't sign up for test knitting until I retired in March and knew I'd have time to complete projects by deadline, and also that Ailbiona hasn't required other tech platforms. Best of luck with improvement of commitment by your test knitters!

Your block at the end looks like it could be used as a pillow if you made four and connected the colors at the center. I would buy the pattern.

The flip side of test knitting: I applied for a test knit 4 days ago with another designer, and I have heard nothing back. I have no idea whether she received my application, whether she has made a decision, or whether the test has already started. I am currently in limbo, having already bought some of the yarn, but still holding back on buying the rest because it's expensive. There are disrespectful test knitters, but likewise there are disrespectful designers.

Maybe only send out smaller sections of the pattern at a time. When they communicate with you about completing a section, then they receive next clue. I think that is reasonable. But I've never test knit either so there is that.

Also in Northern California, I'm enjoying the kiss of fall and working on all my sweater wips before it goes back up to 90's next week 🥲 As for test knitting, I completely agree with you. I've tested several times for both knits and crochet, and I've seen a lot of designers now requiring a confirmation message at several points in the testing window, just as a check-in, and accepting testers with the condition that if they don't complete the test and feedback portions, they will be charged for the price of the published pattern. To be honest, I completely agree! Of course things happen, and you can work with someone if they communicate that they're having issues, but I think it helps to have accountability checks!

I noticed the same thing on sewing tests. But that being said, even though I participate in tests using Slack, I greatly dislike the platform. It may just be me and my lack of technical abilities, but I have to really search to find any of the posts I want to see, and I also have difficulties posting my photos from my camera for some reason. I can post from my phone without much dificulty, which are much poorer quality photos though. Also, you have to start a string (probably the wrong term) for your comments about your test, unless you are commenting on someone else's post, which may be intimidating for some people. I know it is for me even though I have no idea why. So maybe that is the case for others. I have a real hard time finding the newest posts from people and evdn if there are new posts from anyone that i need to read. I find the email tests so much easier where you are all a group and send to and receive from the entire group. Those seem to be participated in better too. But maybe it's just my imagination. I also dislike the Trello tests. They seem very similar in participation to the Slack tests. So all that to say, maybe people are intimidated by the technology and that is why you aren't getting the participation.

Totally agree with what you said about test knitting.... It's disappointing when you put so much work into something and people don't respect that.
Also, I can't wait to see your new shawl design! It looks amazing and I'm obsessed with the colors you chose!

I love testknitting, help designers with small issues that may occure in their pattern, before it is published. It is a lot of fun, when everybody shows their yarn choice and progress. But often, one or more testknitters don't show anything. Apparently they are only there for a free pattern. That is sad 🥲. On the other hand, some designers don't do great during testknits either. I did a testknit in april, and we are still waiting to hear from the (famous!) designer when the pattern will be published, so we are finally allowed to show our finished garments. She just doesn't responds to any of us. Same as a testknit that is happening now, the designer has never given any comments or answers to questions. Strange, isn't it?

Have you ever been involved in any volunteering work? The amount of people who commit and then don't show up is always incredibly high, it's just the nature of unpaid work in general. I think factoring it into the number of testers you accept is unfortunately the only thing you can do.

I think it’s hard to enforce requirements for something like test knitting. The flip side of the argument could be you, the business owner, should be paying test knitters for the service they provide and associated information that informs your business. This is really a business transaction; you’re seeking valuable information that would typically be paid for. When I discovered the knitting community, I was actually surprised test knitting was unpaid as the time it takes and associated yarn costs aren’t compensated by pattern designers. They also frequently require extremely short turnaround times that can be unrealistic for people who don’t knit as a primary source of income.
I’ve seen some designers provide yarn for test knitters and without doing this or paying a tester as a contractor for your business, I think it’s unrealistic to be upset about the ghosting.

I am only a few minutes in and am horrified about your test knitter experience. I’ve test knit quite a bit and it wouldn’t enter my mind to just take the pattern and run. I do hope you have a list of these people so as not to let them do this again. I am so sorry. Your best is beautiful, by the way. I may apply to test it!

Bella, I don't think you should feel bad in any way for asking people to honor the commitment they make when applying to be a test knitter. People who don't honor your agreement are basically stealing. Life emergencies aside of course, no one is forcing them to do the knitting, which presumably they enjoy or why apply. You get your feedback and they get a nice garment and a pattern.

It sounds like the test knitters who ghost you are just signing up to get a free pattern. Which is a pretty crummy thing to do.

  • @cayleen-marie

It's really rude for test to sign up for test knits and then ghost the designer.
On the other hand, testers are putting a large amount of their own time and their own yarn to make the test knit. It's basically free labor.
I think designers who pay their testers are more likely to not have the ghosting issue, but I know that isn't practical for more designers.
I think maybe you should let this issue run off your back. The ghosts probably won't knit the pattern anyways, so I don't the the IP is and issue. I hope you are able to cultivate a group of testers who you are successful with!

It must be frustrating to not hear back from test knitters. Perhaps they are embarrassed that they were not able to do the knitting. There will always be a problem for a system that requires knitters to work without compensation, while expecting a hundred hours of commitment and possibly expense for yarn on their part. Unfortunately, without test knitters working through your whole pattern, you might not realize errors in grading or printing, so you need it to be tested or you would be sending errata out endlessly.

I will give you feedback on test knitting. I have stopped test knitting simply because many podcasters do not tell you the method prior to being selected. I am of an age group that is very security oriented and won't download applications because I work in the IT industry and know that identity theft is rampant. If you stick to ravelry most people will be happy. While I wasn't selected for this test knit, I would have turned you down, finding out after the fact that Id have to download an app. I suspect many people who ghosted you never bothered to download or login, so no theft of patterns

Let me start by saying your projects and patterns are always so beautiful. I feel like people need to be respectful when applying for test knits. When something comes up out of their control that’s one thing. If they just stop for no reason they should at the very least pay you for the pattern they receive. I feel like you are also losing the ability to get noticed from them sharing on social media. Profuse apologies are also appropriate in this case. Just my opinion. I would love to test knit for designers, but I know I am not able to commit so I just wait for the pattern.
