- Andrea Eastman and Helen Meredith @ United Pegasus Foundation rescued 100's of Premarin foals from Canadian slaughter houses. We at the Connemara Ranch rescued 6 of them and Dateline did a wonderful story about developing story and what to do to help.

I am a long time horse person and when my vet explained the premarin my grandmother took was abreviated from Pregnant Mare Urine I was shocked as a kid. IF you want to watch a good movie see "temple grandin" it's about a autistic girl who tries to make the meat industry more humane to animals. worth the watch.
The said autist didn't feel very good about inventing less painful and stressful slaughterhouses. She knew inventing things that serve to kill is a bad karma even when it is to make the proocess less painful she would prefer if people stopped eating meat at all
my big boy came from these farms and he is the greatest horse I have or will ever know. I know a lot of people who prefer a pmu foal as they are very very smart.
thank you helen for your kindness and compassion and all the stars who help! the women who used to take premarin did not know, for the most part, where it came from. when studies showed that premarin was dangerous, the demand plummeted and the pmu farms were stuck with horses. i'm so glad wyeth is at least helping relocate these animals. shame on wyeth for ever making the drug, from pregnant mares' urine. that's abuse and disgusting!
I had a PMU baby and he was an amazing horse. Miss him a lot. Also know a friend of mine that got a baby from the same group I got mine from and she is still barrel racing him because he was a grand son of Dash For Cash.
HELP, thousands of hoses whom have helped humans they're whole lives ,are being slaughtered.As a therapist,and past horse owner, the patience, the weight bearing, the hard work, the gift of tolerance and kindness they lovingly provide during therapy ,without judgement ,makes our ignorance that much more painful.No one ,( 3-5+ year old child ,IQ) should be tortured as they die, take a look at the shock on the faces of horses who have known human kindness, just to be cruelly betrayed by CREATURES FROM HELL, at a slaughter house.

Horses have been with us for thousands of years. They have given their lives to us in wars, so we should repay them, give them something they deserve, love, freedom, families, and a life. They have given to us, so why don't we give to them? Are we that inhumane?

thanks for posting! I remember this, but have never seen a story with all the accurate details. Some interesting debate-starting question of 'what is it that makes horses different than other livestock that we would just eat?' I recently heard an argument to that in animal psychological studies. It says that says both dogs and horses (and some cats) have been scientifically shown to have adapted/evolved as a species to co-exist with humans.. not that we have bred them the way we want, but their natural draw is complimentary to ours.. such as the way a dog looks into a humans left eye... which is typically the source of emotion. pretty neat. I'll try to find these videos and link them.
Thank you for making more of us aware! It stuns me to hear that the Meredith pays the lion's share for transporting them. I thought donations would be pouring in from those able to do so. To me there are so many ways to help. Use you acreage to grow feed for them,etc. Keep this video on youtube please.
This is an old post but too many things remain the same. Draft horses are shipped, out the Calgary airport, to Japan for slaughter This in crates too small, no food or water and often after being hauled in atrocious conditions across Canada or the US. Checkout horse feedlots!

I work with a percheron/paint gelding and he is awesome! He is an awesome trail horse and he is just great! I really feel terribly sad for these horses. He came to my boss wild and untouched. He was like a wild horse. Untouched, unloved and, wanting a mommy. He soon grew into a great horse! I am sad for them!
this should be illegal I can't believe how much suffering goes on in this world and how we have turned against our animals. I have one horse all my life but could not afford one I'm sure there's lots of people in this world who would love to have a horse

I heard about the stuff a long time ago. When I started having symptoms of menopause, I asked my doctor for bioidentical hormone therapy instead.
Still, the videos have woke people up to the reality. Somehow you have to make people care from their debit cards. I would donate if I could. It would be a priority actually. When you see some of these videos, you NEVER forget them.
There is no end or solution to horses being slaughtered. But we need to be thankful that alot of progress has been made to stop it, and many horses have been given happy homes...
when my doctor tried to prescribe this drug to me, I asked if she knew how it was made. She had no idea, so I told her. Another woman overheard the conversation and said if it was true, she wasn't going to take Premarin either. There are other medication options available . I refuse to take this one.

stuff like this make frustrated, cows, sheep, horses, pigs, donkeys, and even elephants basically every animals you can think of served us in the war at least show them a bit of respect!!

I am post menopausal and have never taken hormone replacement therapy, especially Premarin, just for this reason and never would!
Fact of the day: PMU mares were more commonly drafts because of the larger amount of urine and their ability to stand for longer periods of time.
for those that don't know, HRT only means "hormone replacement therapy". It doesn't mean what KIND you are using.

This video really down played the cruelty that goes in in this industry. Over a decade ago I watched a vid of a Premarin barn and the under cover man measured the temps in there at -30 below and the horses could not even move to warm themselves. Some had collapsed in their stalls and cruel men came along and belted them with steel pipes to get up. Then there was the horrendous treatment of the mare foaling her foal onto cold concrete floor and she was taken away from her foal immediately and the man picked up the foal and literally impaled it on a meat hook and we watched it go around the line kicking and screaming until it got to the man that slit its throat......I once saw my ex father in law slit the throat of a a sheep as had only lived in the city till that time. Here I thought the sheep would die immediately and was horrified to watch it bleed out over 10 minutes before it finally dropped dead. I turned to my ex father inlaw and stated rather repulsively "that was the most disgusting and cruel act I have ever seen and why did you not put a bullet in its head. He replied back "Ï did not want to waste a bullet"! At that, I told him he was sick and walked away and from that point on I do not eat slaughtered animals.
I told my doctor where he could stick his HRT. As a horse lover all my life and horse owner I was disgusted with this hormone production. These farmers are vile abusers. I owned my menopause, lived through it and keto dieted it away.
If one suffers with low estrogen they can source estrogen from plants like soybeans, red clover etc.. coz fitoestrogens present in them work exactly like estrogen.
They tried to put me on premerian. I refused and told my dr what premerian really was. She denied it. So I pulled out my laptop and showed her this. She sat and watched the whole thing with her hand over her mouth. She was so disturbed that she started crying. She said she never knew anything about this. And was very upset to know that she was part of this. She is a huge animal lover and wasn't ok with any of this. She now refuses to prescribe or renew it.
Its way past the time to end this!!!
I got rid of hot flashes using Olive Leaf Concentrate in capsules and liquid, did a great job killing all that internal candida that screws up our organs!

Eating pork may also be a way of harming horses as PSMG, a hormone got from pregnant mares' blood is used to make she-pigs in heat. It is unncessary for all you need it a sight of a male to cause heat but it is recommended to farmers by farmaceutical companies and therefore a lot use it.
@marti91257 that is true but I think that the Premarin babies as well as the Mustang babies will not have had any vetting at all and so are prime canditates for shipping live to Japan to be eaten. Its horrible !
my dr didnt want me on any hormone replacement only something for mood wsings and i took herbal stuff for hot flashes worked well...

She felt ill coz you can even get cancer if you overdose estrogen. If you drink milk you already give yourself extra estrogen. Besides you can get it without abuse. You can get it via soy or red clover. You don't have to abuse animals in any way to get extra estrogen

never had a horse, but would love to have a few for my self. my favorite is a clydesdale, but would give any that came my way a good home. i cant stand to see a horse mistreated or any animal. i hope they can get this to stop!! not a way for any animal to live..
The sad thing is this is the same concept as dairy farms.
Horses are slaughtered here in Australia which upsets many Australians. We are fighting to stop the slaughter. Many race horses are destined to this horrific cruelty.

So sad 😭💔. Imagine standing in one spot, on concrete, with arthritis and pain, unable to move or lye down for 6 months 24/7. As a result reproductive organ failure happens, as gravity takes over your body and you then have to endure a truck trip to slaughter, days or weeks on the road, unable to move, dehydration, hunger and stress the whole way! It’s incomprehensible 😢. There are synthetic alternatives. I have menopause and not needed anything, just learn to live with it.
Horses have been with us through wars, help us plough the fields, made us money from racing...the list goes on. Is this how we treat them for their service...come on people don't use this drug!
If you need hormone therapy as a woman suffering from menopause, go to a compounding pharmacist who can formulate the exact chemical formula required by your unique body chemistry - and no animal will have to suffer in the process!

Whats wrong with just dealing with periods? I have awful cramps and bleeding and hot flashes that take me to my knees some days and put me in tears...and id'e like to say i'm a pretty tough person. I don't take any kind of meds to save me from the pain i just buck up, get out there with my horses and do some light work, they take my mind off it all. and honestly nothing does wonders for my cramps like a horse ride, it really loosens them up. There is other ways.
You can rise level of estrogen with soy, rice or fitoestrogens. Milk has it too but it has its own share of animal cruelty. But overdosing estrogen can cause cancer

I'm sure this is still practiced some places, but I know its dying down...Scientists have started to find Premarin in some plants that they can substitute into the pills instead of taking it from the pregnant mares...
Scientists knew about fitoestrogens long before I read about it in Focus popular science magazine. It is just that pharmaceutical companies are sadists.

I love horses like I mean I live and breath horses, but this is what humans have done to all animals I will never ever eat horse meat, but peoples lack of education and lack of gelding horses not worth breeding creates the same problem as these PMU farms did, It's very sad to say but with the way humans are there is not enough room for the amount of grade backyard ponies that are born let alone racing industries throw back as well, slaughter is kind of a necessary evil, just like how people that haven't got pets spayed and neutered like dogs and cats, causes over crowding in rescues and euthanasia is a common thing, I mean it is very sad and I would love for the world to not have any of it but it's just not going to happen
almika360 the worst I have seen over my many years is the riding industry. so many brats get a horse then get bored o it and they wind up at some cheap auction usually with meat buyers. People who don't love horses shouldn't have horses.
Niamh Baszyl parents shouldn’t buy their kids ponies or horses without first having their kids take riding lessons for a couple of years so they learn how to ride properly and have some understanding of horsemanship!

Does anyone know how to adopt PMU horses now? I keep trying but many of the site are outdated. I know there are still PMU foals/older horses at risk. We live in texas and have an empty barn with two stalls.... We would love to save a few foals.

Many of the Premarin horses have been shipped to China where the cruelty and barbarity of this useless drug is now being manufactured. The reality is Premarin has bad side effects whereas the synthetic HRT works There is no reason for Wyeth to torture another animal, But still they do.

this matter is several years old. NAERIC is a great organization for making the foals valuable and double registered, but the PMU farms were moved to China where regulation is non existent and they eat horses without any ethical concerns. There are only 22 farms left in North America.
and what do you think he's going to do about it? the majority of the PMU farms are all in Canada right now and are under the rule of the North American Equine Ranching Council. Believe it or not since this Dateline aired a lot has changed in the industry. My senior paper is on this subject and I've been doing extensive research into it.

Every woman who takes premarin should be ashamed of themselves, they just need to suck it up, or grow a pair, these horses don`t deserve to go through having baby after baby just so you don`t have to be in pain from measly periods!
This problem stems from mindset...Horses are companion animals and NOT livestock as so many prefer to think of them. Until that fact is faced and until commercial breeding of any animal comes to a halt there will be all kinds of ways to sell the misfortune of these good hearted critters.

actually, I have to say to those arguing about beef and pigs. Animals used for meat production live in conditions probably ten times worse than these mares. they lock them in tiny pens so they can barely move so they can fatten them up to kill and send them neatly wrapped in plastic to the supermarket. They only way to really get good meat that is humanely treated is to buy directly from a free range farmer. although most people won't pay those prices. is all about the money.

For starters, the majority of premarin farms have been shut down. Those that remain, are under strict regulations and are inspected regularly. The ranches that are still in operation, have been raising quality horses for generations before they ever signed a contract with Wyeth (the manufacturer of Premarin). Even before the shut-downs, the vast majority of these farmers were raising horses for years and years before supplying urine to Wyeth. These horses were well cared for and had good lives. I'm not specifically speaking of the horses in this video, because I do not know the circumstances of those farms. But, all of the farmers I ever met, LOVED their horses (like the majority of horse owners do), and put the needs of the animals well before their own. If you have never owned a horse, been to a farm, personally spoken with these farmers, etc, then maybe you should try doing those things before passing broad, sweeping judgments.

no I am not for horse slaughter all of our horses came from auctions where I was bidding against meat buyers. the youngest was 6 weeks old unfortunately she did not survive. she came from a ranch that bred registered QH. until the situation of overbreeding of horses is dealt with this will continue.

Dumb? How can you call any creature dumb? It's true that animal intellegence can't even begin to compare with what the human brain is capable of. But that does not mean that they are dumb. They are as intellegent as they're capable of being. You might as well say a two year old child is dumb because they don't know how to assemble a car. They are as intellegent as a two year old child is capable of being (for the most part). Please think before you judge others, human or animal.
Additionally, those of us opposed to horse slaughter are basing our opposition on facts, not 'sentimental dispositions'. How condescending . I researched horse slaughter for ten years. Along the way, I realized that meat consumption is not necessary for human health, and in fact is detrimental in many ways. I am not sentimental. I am Moral.
