I don't have an issue with them not wanting filming (although that seems a bit over the top). However, this guy taking the position that you should know what he meant because he didn't respond to your email is truly mind blowing. I should try that with my boss sometime. I'm sure that will go over well.
Yes but that's because he's your boss. If you email someone asking for something and they don't get back to you, then email or call again to make sure they saw your request. If they don't get back to you, assume it's a no. That being said, the manager could have been a bit more polite.
A reply to your e mail should have been made. How many of you have paid a full green fee and then found the course and especially the greens barely playable due to maintenance, with nothing mentioned beforehand by the club? Things like this would put me off revisiting 😮
It just says it all doesn't it - 'That's why I didn't reply to your email'. If you are so concerned about the courses image then reply to the email. Only takes a minute.

Hi James,,I and a couple of friends were intending to visit Holywell as I was born in Prestatyn and my grandparents lived in Holywell but after tht interaction with that Manager/Steward I think we,ll be giving it a miss,,take care,,love the vids,,Les
Bet they didn't tell you the greens were under maintenance when you booked and paid! If the greens aren't good enough to be filmed then they shouldn't take money off you - the customer! I won't be going there mate! Enjoyed your laid back video style! Nice!
This exact scenario happened with me and my father. £50 each and the greens were unplayable due to maintenance. This was at a local course which we had played and enjoyed many times before. When we mentioned afterwards that they should have told us about the condition of the greens - we had phoned prior to book - we were told that if we went to the up the road to another course, we'd pay even more! What a bizarre response. Never been back.
Man, I'm glad I watched your video! I'm new to golf and was going to start vlogging my struggles and thoughts while I was on course. I had no clue that some golf courses may be protective of their greens and whatnot. Thank you for putting this out there. And you gained a subscriber! Thank you.
That is the most amazing thing. So he came out and told you he didn't want you to film there and says: "that's why I didn't get back to your email". So apparently, if he doesn't want someone to come to his golf course, he doesn't actually ever tell them that. He just doesn't reply to their emails, texts, etc. That's insane
Every golfer expects green maintenance at this time of year, it’s not an issue, don’t know what his problem was with the filming, it’s not as tho you were giving a detailed report on the condition of the greens, the guy has found a problem were the wasn’t one !nice video anyway and you handled it well👍
Agree with the comments here and, having watched the video, people will steer clear of this club , not because of the course but the attitude and that’s what counts in life, how you treat and respect others and the tone of the club manager when speaking to you spoke volumes
Golf clubs are funny places and many have petty officials living out their school prefect dreams … Clearly the right approach should have been: 1. To respond to your email 2. Explain it was a busy course maintenance week and ask that you explain that in your video 3. Perhaps offer you a discounted green fee in view of the course condition concerns Any exposure is good exposure (even despite the official the course looked good and the skies were amazing) so better that you visit than defer and perhaps never come. Agreed about course officials. My theory is that most of these elderly men are hen pecked at home and this is their only chance to exert some power in their lives
Dont let the manner of the secretary put anybody off playing here. I played yesterday, one of the few N Wales courses I havent played, and found it to be superb. Condition of the greens wasnt great but it is February. But some great holes, especially the par 3's. All on summer greens, no mats, and only £20 ! Its a gem, can't wait to go back.
So much craziness on the "manager's" part. If you think the course is too bad to show, then close for the period. Don't charge full price for a watered-down experience. I played a nearby muni last week and they'd knocked about 60% off the green fee because they were finishing up work on cart paths! But really, all you need to know about this experience is that the video did not conclude with the principle enjoying a pint ...
Well done James , handled like a gentleman , that manager is clearly an idiot and i hope the club see this and reprimand him with a training course on customer service , better off away from there .

Absolutely refreshing videos James, As other comments great to see you bigging up N.Wales courses, As for the course manager he needs to realise private courses need non members green fees to survive. I had one really terrible experience at a course near St.Helens more famous for it's racecourse.I was playing with 2 friends and was fortunate enough to get a hole in one on the short 4th. When we got back to the 19th hole my friend asked the barman if there was any special glass they use for hole in ones The misery replied with take your hat off in the clubhouse. We immediately left. Great video. Alot of us below par golfers can enjoy this. Looked about like my day yesterday but I'm blaming it on a hangover instead of my average poor play. Lol
In my experience, it’s better to force people to respond to your emails by loading the question, e.g. “If I receive no response from you, I will assume that you have no problems with me doing this.” Never ask an open question. That said, his manner was awful. He never introduced himself properly. If you met the grounds man on the round, surely he should have also spoken to you. I guess some golf courses aren’t in the business of being welcoming. It’s their loss!
If the course maintenance hadn't been mentioned I wouldn't have really known! The course actually looks quite nice. Hopefully that's the last time he intentionally ignores an email though.
If matey had come over and asked politely for you to include in your video that it was Maintance week so the viewer understood the situation (just as you did) then no problem - but they haven’t done themselves any favours there. I bet no one else if going to give them any exposure and it’s such a quirky course with sheep on the greens, that does it really matter - all a bit unnecessary !!
What a plonker. No wonder he’s the manager of a second rate golf course at his peak of career. You are a rising star and we always love to see the courses you play and which courses we will avoid.
Enjoyable video. The course looks good and very scenic. You were not swinging as well as you normally do but the intervention from the manager just finished you off! My view is that he could have replied to your email - it would have taken 2 minutes. Puts you off playing on the course! Probably will not visit it because of his intervention. Great shame.
I would suggest closing the course during the maintenance week would be the best idea. A polite reply informing James of the situation would have avoided this debacle... Unfortunately, this has now brought bad publicity to Holywell.
Since most clubs have internet access it's normal to post when course maintenance will be in operation to inform both members and visitors of any restrictions on the course,in any event it's pure ignorance and bad manners on his part not replying to your email. Never mind James, there's one in every club!
As usual a very enjoyable video James...well up to the point you were so rudely interrupted. Not very good form on Holywells behalf...but itll reflect badly on them as a club, not you James. You were very calm and measured when challenged. All courses need maintenance but why should that affect your course vlog.In fact you made the club look well in this video.James you do a great job highlighting in parrticular courses in Wales that mightnt get too much exposure and whoever runs golf in Wales...golf Wales or whatever should be thanking you for your service to golf in Wales .and they should be encouraging you to keep it up!Well done as usual..Holywells loss Id say!
Very enjoyable round, to a certain point. Nothing like approaching you mid round to tell not to do what you’ve been doing for a while. They are worried about course maintenance videos while they have farm animals and craters in the fairway. I say dust the sand from your sandals and don’t go back. It’s not like they are on the Open Rota anyway.
Golf today... returning to it's we're better than you ways.. I've given up again due to the type of snooty people who seemed to return to UK golf during COVID...
If the secretary could'nt get back to you it would have been quite simple to put a notice on the first tee to say the course was closed but why were other people on the course ?? , if they can' tbe arsed making the effort to inform people about these things what do they expect you to do , they must think we're all mind readers , and as for the members replys it would seem to me they just want to side with there own club regardless of what occured , i know quite a few people who have given bad reports about Hollywell's members , keep up the good work James .
Keep up the good work James and ignore the jobs worths. If he was that bothered about how the club looked, he should have responded to the email. The course looked in fine condition and wouldn't have put me off going. The secretary would though. Don't know what it is about some golf courses, they jus think they don't need to respond to emails - get with the times!
His reason for not getting back to you was the exact reason he should have got back to you. Just cross that course off the play list. Watching the video, you've played plenty better courses.
Never seen your channel before. Enjoyed the vlog. Just dropped a google review on the course for good measure. Everything was wrong with how that berk approached you!!
@sarahwilkinson7802 as a direct response to what I saw on here. Behaviour like that needs outing imo. Totally unnecessary approach. In terms of entitled - how about the prissy pompous attitude of the golf club in question! Did you watch this video? In my review I did not review the course, just the behaviours displayed!!!!
@@timackland5411 I’m sure your review would be a good read. I’ve watched this and most of James’s videos. I suppose if you think this managers attitude so offensive I shouldn’t be surprised you’ve left a review without ever visiting. If I found a golfer filming at my course, before the club is open, I would ask if he had permission and probably let him keep filming. He’s got his green fees covered, so everyone’s happy
You ok Hun? What an absolute snowflake of a human you are. Reviewing a course from a RUclips video. The secretary asked him not to film and he continued to. James said he won't film and won't post online yet he did. James never paid therefore trespassing. He emailed on a Friday and probably wasn't seen if the secretary was off?? Totally understand your view here James. Some course committee members are quite arrogant and guard their course like it’s their own hallowed ground. It’s stuffy attitudes like that taint the game of golf. I definitely do not want any hassle either! Apart from that , Great video! 😅⛳️🏌🏼♂️
The manager/secretary did more damage to his course than your video ever would have... People take note....Don't bother with Holywell. I hate these sorts of people and golf is full of them. Steer clear....

0:19 some substantial thoracic mobility limitations in that rotation James, I can highly recommend seeing a chiropractor to aid mobility. Completely changed my enjoyment of the game mate.
Nice quality video…and you just missed couple of putts. Great price for a full round, and having sheep on the course certainly unique, I would have expected the greens to be torn up, but they weren’t. I must be missing something here…the manager who came over for a quick word….I don’t know, he seemed polite from what I saw? Reading through the comments though I learned a couple of things: The Mold seems to be a nice place to play, and….pillock. Pillock, lol I’ve never heard that word before but it doesn’t appear to be a compliment. At any rate , cheers to all in UK, it’s -10 and no golf till next April where I am. 🇨🇦
I've played Holywell a few times. It's a pretty average course to put it mildly. Not exactly Turnberry, that's for sure. They should be grateful anybody plays there! You're well out of it.
Looks like a nice little track. The secretary could have handled it much better - I'll probably give it a swerve. As other comments mention - the course looked fine, don't know why he was such a knob about it.
Honestly…… it’s refreshing to watch a video of someone playing golf without the : unnecessary loud voice, over the top celebrating, throwing clubs around the green and over the top background music. Cheers!
What a way to ruin a rd. The guy should have spoken to you in the club house and not interrupted you. Its a hard enough game trying to concentrate and focus, this would have ruined my day too and I would not have been happy. Not good publicity for this course. Won't ever be playing there when I make a trip to GB to play golf, which will be next June after I retire. Good to see ya again James.
I don't think the manager was particularly rude but agree that, if he was that concerned about the course being filmed during maintenance, he should have replied to the email. Missed opportunity for some positive exposure
Geez, woulda been nicer for them to respond to your email as opposed to coming out on the course and being a jerk. Besides, a 444 yards par 4 where you can't use a driver??! Ridiculous.

I bet no one else if going to give them any exposure and it’s such a quirky course with sheep on the greens, that does it really matter - all a bit unnecessary !!
Saffron Walden GC just the same forget you are the customer. thx 4 the vid
What a plonker. No wonder he’s the manager of a second rate golf course at his peak of career. You are a rising star and we always love to see the courses you play and which courses we will avoid.
That guy's intervention has done his club more harm than good. You did nothing wrong James. Keep up the good work mate 👍🙂

Big fan 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I would suggest closing the course during the maintenance week would be the best idea.
A polite reply informing James of the situation would have avoided this debacle...
Unfortunately, this has now brought bad publicity to Holywell.
Have played it a few times and the members are quite a unique mix of being both pompous and weird. The mananger's demeanour is suitably befitting.
Since most clubs have internet access it's normal to post when course maintenance will be in operation to inform both members and visitors of any restrictions on the course,in any event it's pure ignorance and bad manners on his part not replying to your email.
Never mind James, there's one in every club!
I’ve had a few experiences at golf courses like you had at this one. There is a right and a wrong way to approach people.
Calm and measured... then slag the club off on RUclips. “Just a misunderstanding “ yet everyone’s throwing a wobbler. Strange.
Great channel, love the format.
I don’t blame you I wouldn’t go back and give them your money
Golf today... returning to it's we're better than you ways.. I've given up again due to the type of snooty people who seemed to return to UK golf during COVID...
My game would have went to shit also. Good on you. For posting .
If the secretary could'nt get back to you it would have been quite simple to put a notice on the first tee to say the course was closed but why were other people on the course ?? , if they can' tbe arsed making the effort to inform people about these things what do they expect you to do , they must think we're all mind readers , and as for the members replys it would seem to me they just want to side with there own club regardless of what occured , i know quite a few people who have given bad reports about Hollywell's members , keep up the good work James .
great video. they should have been happy to have there course showcased.
The Manager didn’t have the decency to reply to your e-mail !
The irony for me is that I thought the course came across quite well in the video. The management not so much.
Review without playing it? Ridiculous entitlement syndrome going on.
Funny how people have an 15 handicapper as an idol. Get back in your bedroom and play with your trains
The yardage count on shots is great!
Come to Tasmania. Play on a scenic mountain view public course for $15. Sometimes can be only group on course . Many courses volunteer run. I'll take you around.
Totally understand your view here James. Some course committee members are quite arrogant and guard their course like it’s their own hallowed ground. It’s stuffy attitudes like that taint the game of golf. I definitely do not want any hassle either! Apart from that , Great video! 😅⛳️🏌🏼♂️

I would have thought that showing your staff working on the course was a good advert for your club!
I'm not sure what he was worried about. The course looks fine.
The manager/secretary did more damage to his course than your video ever would have...
People take note....Don't bother with Holywell. I hate these sorts of people and golf is full of them. Steer clear....
Sorry you had to deal with this during your round James. You handled it well though.
Recommend shops to answer emails or get over it. Great video!
Best chip shop ever in Holywell, my dad used to take my sister and i there every Thursday after swimming, i remember it for the belly pork , right on a corner street if I remember correctly, it was back in the 70s
Still there
Hope you went back and remembered to pick up your wedge on the 5th green! Might still be there for all we know!
0:19 some substantial thoracic mobility limitations in that rotation James, I can highly recommend seeing a chiropractor to aid mobility. Completely changed my enjoyment of the game mate.
Was considering playing here next year..no chance now.
It doesn't pretend to be Turnberry! What an irrelevant comment
@ Relevant enough for you to respond.
Cheers!
Were they worried that competitor golf courses would steal their ideas for making their greens look average.
And to think I was going to fly there from California and play there! Thanks for saving me $ for the flight and green fees. 😭
He was clearly a berk from the initial style of his "I'm ok" it was obvious.
Geez, woulda been nicer for them to respond to your email as opposed to coming out on the course and being a jerk. Besides, a 444 yards par 4 where you can't use a driver??! Ridiculous.
