Lamu is the oldest and first Swahili settlement (13th Century) on the East African Indian Ocean Coastline and the origin of the Kiswahili language. It was inhabited by Africans of Bantu descent who intermarried with traders on the coast who came from Arabia, Persia, China, Portugal and other parts of the world.

Totally agree with you.. the Europeans are the major tourists in Lamu, Malindi, Kilifi, Mombasa and Diani. They leave their countries and know about these hidden gems that we are not aware of
Jasmine, now you have seen for yourself the rich cultural fusion of the East African coastline, particularly Kenyan side. You have witnessed the influence and impact of the Portuguese, Persian and Arabic culture fused in to the local tribes to create the Swahili community, culture, and heritage. You needed to venture further in to Shella island and other islands in the outcasts of Lamu, and right in your face you would have met another slightly different community falling within the Swahili community. They have typical Chinese physiology. They are descendants of survivors of a Chinese merchant ship that wrecked hundreds of years back. These survivors intermarried with locals and lived in those islands never to return to China. There are cemetery with tombs having Chinese inscriptions. That’s how culturally rich the coastline of East Africa presents

This is one of the best videos I have seen; Jasmine has really shown much of the culture and sights of this Kenyan gem, Lamu. Its a kind of place where you might intend to stay for two days but end up staying for two months. I stayed there for twelve days but wanted to stay much longer. The place has great ambience and most relaxing and safe to move around. You wont want to leave! i was there during Ramadan and enjoyed the Eid meal at the end of the month with a guide. It would be great to go out of Lamu into the interior of the island to see rural life - tamarind trees, palm wine and fishing, dhow making as I did. The Swahili house museum in Lamu is worth a look; Jasmine stayed in a traditional Swahil house, vert delightful. The flat topped trees are actually thorn acacias and are very common on the islands here. I also went by dhow to the island of Pate where I spent a night savouring the atmosphere. Lamu is worth a visit; go there and enjoy! It s much better than Mombasa.
Wow, I fully appreciate this video. Usually hard to watch a 30 minute video but this has been so easy and I honestly would have watched for 2hours. Thanks Jasmine. ❤️🙏🏾
