"women are more often victims of violent crime" that is FALSE. Men are substantially more often the victims of violent crimes. Stop spewing bs msm feminist propaganda, and do your own research, go look at the FBI statistics on violent crime, and gender and racial breakdown (they stopped reporting that a few years back... as that is now considered "racist" given that a certain 13.5% of the population is committing over 50% of all violent crimes in this country ).

As a retired law enforcement officer < when you are parked have your keys near your bed, if you hear someone outside near your camper, push your alert button, your lights and horn with flash and sound, criminals don’’t like attention. Also have your keys in your hands when walking toward your rv in a dark parking lot. Love your videos.

Very good tips. I am a police officer and situational awareness is key! Know your surroundings and learn to pick up on body language and behavior of others. If you do carry a firearm always have a plan with your spouse and kids the same way you have a plan if there is a fire.

Conflict avoidance is strongly taught in concealed carry classes. The best gunfight is the one you are not in. I am a daily carrier and the last thing I want to do is use deadly force on another and in the same note the last thing I want is for someone else to use deadly force on me or my loved ones. The old adage holds true...better to have it and not need it than to NOT have it and need it. Good information guys for general safe conduct whether RVing or just living your best life in todays times.

Firearms 🎉at 65, firearms are the great equalizer. We choose to not enter states that don’t recognize my license. I do suggest training in proper use, and, reviewing laws everywhere you go, but the peace of mind is immeasurable. If we do choose to go to communist states we stay in high end parks and consider the extra cost as security. Fortunately, we have had zero problems.

As an avid hunter, I always laugh at the people who say they need a gun to protect themselves from animals, its usually those people who I fear the most... They buy weapons out of fear without the proper knowledge or training on how or when to use them. I wish firearm safety was brought back to public education and that everyone was trained on the correct way to handle and maintain a firearm.

Another useful item for personal security is wasp and hornet spray, especially the cans with finger trigger. Place close to the door for easy access and the spray in the face will cause any criminal to become a sobbing mess that last for hours. Actually, most people will require a short hospital stay. I carry a can when outside the RV when in sketchy areas. Just something us old folks know about while on the road in our RVs.

I camp by myself often. I am normally camping at state parks. As a lone female I recommend first to let the families around you know you are alone. Second, have a way to draw attention to you. Have a air horn like you get from the party section at Walmart. Also, get the noise button you can get from the jogging section of Walmart. Secure anything you will miss if gone.
If parking in a parking lot pull in such that you will not get blocked in. I sweep in so the nose of my truck is pointing out.

Kudos to you, this is a subject that needs to be addressed by more RUclipsrs. It's specialty important for long distant travels. As a Canadian and have out of Country plates we are a target. We have equipped our motorhomes with 360-degree cameras with motion detection. Our alarm system is connected wirelessly to all our basement doors and connected to every window and with vibration detectors so that there is a deterrent factor before the crime happens. The alarm is equipped to a siren (in use when we are not in the RV) but otherwise anybody that comes within 10 ft, the alarm sounds off a Chime inside also audible withing a few ft outside. With foreign plates we are an immediate target on the road. We have had two incidences of vehicles following us. In Tampa a few years ago I noticed a white pickup following us ( no it was not you) after we had parked in 24 hr Walmart. My wife wanted a few items inside and as we neared the door I spotted the white pickup circling in the parking lot. I went in but once inside the store I told my wife that I wanted to go back to the RV. Sure as hell there was the withe pick up parked in front of our RV. One guy was leaning to his back on the rear side. The other one was out of sight, but as I approached they both fled in seconds. These were pros, we checked everything and could not see any intrusion. We have front and rear dash cams also and it recorded everything including voice from the guy at the door trying to force it open and swearing, did not work because we installed a residential deadbolt. We stayed there but the mgr told us to move in front of the entrance doors, we had an appointment the next morning for service at Holiday Ramber repair center. Next morning as we left drivers kept tooting their horn until one pulled up and told us our back basement door was flying open. We pulled over and found out why that guy was leaning his back onto our RV. Upon close inspection we saw an upsidedown boot print from rear type horse kick. Little that we knew at the time but the tri-mark latches have a plastic lock plunder one kick and it's open. This guy obviously knew that but nothing was missing. Folks have fives eyes and watch your surroundings at all time. Canadians and out of state plates watch your surrounding on the road.

Great content, always wondered what other folks do. I would strongly recommend, regardless if an individual is pro gun, anti gun, whatever… take a concealed carry class. The right instructors will teach you so many things that were discussed here. When you can and can’t carry a firearm. What it means to use your firearm in self defense, situational awareness. What to do after an incident. Potential legal implications, Reciprocal laws state by state, etc. for example, in Illinois if you display a firearm and you are not in a self defense situation, you can be charged with a crime. Take a class. Don’t just throw a firearm under the seat and assume you are all good. Thank you for this video.

    • @caseyntrent
      @caseyntrent Год назад

Agreed. We took a class too… for our concealed carry permit and it really makes you think of all the things that could happen when you pull out your firearm. One that sticks with me (as a mom) you have got to be prepared to actually hit your target and you absolutely have to know what will happen if you miss especially when there could be a child behind the wall! And I also agree that if I ever pull it out then it will be used! But I cannot imagine there ever being a case where I cannot just avoid the conflict. But if not… I’m prepared

Sean & Kristy: This is a long overdue topic. Especially about the concerns to carry a firearm or not.
I carry (locked-up) on occasion, but having said that, I make it a point NOT to visit destinations that are questionable.
Rule of thumb...If a place is sketchy, and I need to carry, then it's not a good idea to camp there!
What ever happened to being street-smart?
Yeah, has there been times where we ended up in not the best of places...you bet.
As they say, "...discretion is the better part of valor".
So, your analogy about the grizzly bear, with all his firepower, choosing instead to go somewhere else was perfect.
If you had to "use" a firearm (in a self-defense situation), then you have better have a good criminal attorney on retainer!
No matter what the verdict or charge, it's gonna cost ya!
Finally, I can't wait for next week's topic, NUCLEAR WAR!
    Be safe.

BTW: I noticed that in a couple of images you were parked at a rest stop and pulled up all the way to the front off a truck space, like at 3:15. Have you ever gone to pull into a parking space between two cars and discovered a short vehicle like a motorcycle already there? I stop our rig with the back bumper aligned with the back of the tractor trailers, so nobody thinks it's an empty slot and has to back up if I get trucks on both sides.

Firearms - double-check State Laws you are traveling to and thru, especially when it comes to magazine capacity. It is different State-to-State.
State laws are different if you have to declare your firearm if pulled over by Law Enforcement. Even transportation of firearm is different State-to-State.
Canada and Mexico are very restrictive when it comes to firearms and personal protection (like pepper spray), so check their Laws.

Hi! I have been watching your channel for years, love you both! We started out considering RV travel but due to our current age and me developing a disability it is no longer the correct means of travel for us. You had a video that discussed the importance of BOTH travelers being able to do the others task hooking up and unhooking in case the other travel partner was incapacitated. Wise words. We now plan to travel using hotels and BNB, having alternate plans for indoor activities on bad weather days and planning rest days. I still find your channel VERY applipical for anyone who travels. Todays video definitely applies, watch your back, stay in good areas, have a plan A&B, trust your instincts, and have a well thought out plan for different situations (medical, breakdows, safety etc) I love to watch for information on areas to visit and things to do. My wife and I have been camping for over 50 years, we have camped in every state except Alaska and Hawaii. We have never had a serious problem until our trip from Ohio to Fort Pickens campground in Florida on October 31 of last year. We stopped for fuel in Elizabethtown Kentucky at a Five Star fuel store in a good neighborhood. It was 7:08AM.I got back in the Thor Compass B+ and saw a man try to enter the camper door which was dead bolted. He then looked in the passenger side door and said something we couldn't understand. He got back in his green truck. We headed south on I65 toward the sunshine state. After a couple of miles I saw the green truck beside us. He tried to run us off the road 3 times. I did not stop but applied the brakes to avoid a collision. My wife called 911 and he saw me on the phone and sped off. However he waited for us at the next exit but did not follow. Maybe because a class c was near us. Thank you for your excellent video. We tried to get several RUclipsrs and a camping magazine to publish the full story all refused. We spent almost two months in Florida without any other problems. THANKS

    Sean,
Thanks to you and Kristy for another “timely” video. Despite being a 35-year military / combat veteran I joined US Concealed Carry Assoc. (USCCA) several years ago to provide me with information on where my concealed carry permit and states permit carry (reciprocity) and “if” needed legal representation which was Kristy’s valid point. If s important that you as the conceal carrying individual understand - Escalation of Force (EOF), Rules of Engagement (ROE) and Stand your Ground principles BEFORE you “draw / display” your firearm. There “could” be legal ramifications just by presenting a firearm and how it is interpreted by person you are confronting. USCCA gives me a 24-hour hotline for legal representation IF the need should arise. It is NO LONGER the Wild Wild West so, make sure your travel the lower 48 and carry a firearm.

Also useful in rest stops when one stays in RV and the other does a walk around or walks the paths /sidewalks to stretch legs. It provides an instant connection and when conspicuously clipped on the belt or back pocket provides a visible cue that you are indeed situationally aware (or may be a part of a security company). Overnight parking at Walmart in Ellsworth Maine is way different than Walmart in an urban area; it's really uneven. One of my leading indicators of a sketchy Walmart is derelict RVs in a semi-permanent homeless encampment. I've found Cracker Barrel to be more uniform, partly because they're always in an area right near a highway exit and surrounded by retailers and motels. We like Casinos for the 24 hour patrolling security. Personal tip: When overnight parking, don't unhook, don't chock, don't open slides or put down jacks. Set the parking brake, sleep in your T-shirt and skivvies, and keep your pants and shoes handy. You want to be ready to drive off at any moment. Lately we've been loving Harvest Hosts. If we can work in a HH stop enroute we're far more relaxed than when we're lot docking.

Good discussion. A couple points to add - stress situational awareness - we have avoided issues by not staying where we expected to. Dogs are a great early warning system, AND a deterrent to others. RV parks are not immune from social problems - we find those (often State/County parks) that prohibit alcohol are a good choice. Just one less issue fuel a fire, so to speak. Stay safe!

RE:@12:28; a buddy & I took our sons and 6 friends camping/ water skiing at a State Park/lake in the NW. Arrived on a Friday night, campground was nearly full, and the Ranger suggested we cross the road and head a mile or so into BLM land...."far safer than in the campground on the weekend with 'partyers' " were his words of advice. Good situational awareness includes asking advice from the regulars.😅

oh yes, i meant to say - we stopped for lunch in Gallup, NM and I stayed wirh our rig and our Yorkies while my husband went to grab food. Not long after he left, a car drove by and parked across the street. Two people, older man and woman, walked separately toward the direction of our truck. The man walked down one side and the woman walked the other side. I refused to make eye contact when the man stopped outside my window but I held up my phone and started filming and taking pictures. The woman walked back the other way and they both walked off when my husband appeared again.
We didn't linger any longer - my thought was they do this to travelers regularly. It was quite unnerving!!

I think all too often people think of them as ways to make them feel "big and bad" and not realize they are a serious weapon that should be respected. I loved all your tips. I will add: If we know we are going to be parking lot camping, we try to get there early to make sure it is safe and have 2 or 3 backup options incase there are concerns of safety.

A quality mic is an investment that will literally last decades! They are not like cameras in that respect. The mics we are using now are the Audio Technics AT4047 and the Neumann TLM102. They are both great. I also have a Sennheiser MKH416 that gets used occasionally. I also usually tweak our vocal audio in post by adjusting the threshold (just optimizing the audio track for vocals). Check out the Booth Junkie Channel - he has some excellent videos on this topic.

Lock up your bikes, barbecue grill, and chairs. A minimal amount of theft happens in RV parks. Your chances of being assaulted are 10 times more likely by your drunk neighbor in the RV park. But. Outside of the parks, The most dangerous places are fast-food restaurants, gas stations shopping centers. Stay away from abandoned buildings and dumpsters at businesses. Wearing a bulletproof vest will only protect you in a low percentage of cases because Seeing a gun is not as common and they don't work for anything but bullets.
Sometimes they will use a mace spray or a screwdriver.
Carry an old extra wallet with $3 in it to give to them.
A commonly used weapon in a major city downtown is a half brick.
Your head will bleed a lot, Don't panic, it is not as bad as it looks.
The number one weapon used in most cases is a box cutter or a knife.
If you can carry a gun, then do it. Get a permit. If not, Then Carry mace with you, It's the best you can do. I have 4 Arlo security cameras on my camper. They have spotlights. They record and report to my cell phone. 1 is a doorbell. It is nice, It calls you if pushed.

At 3am at an Ohio state park only 12 campers in November at a 250 site area, someone pounded on our RV motorhome door and said help me my brother it trying to kill me. Called 911 immediately cops arrived in 20 minutes. My wife yelled at me, dont open the door, I ran to the door and yelled calling the cops. They saw nothing. We had no plan. Now we do. Could have just drove away without going outside. After I went on facebook to our Ohio SP and my Winnebago groups. Many have not even thought of something like this. One person said another camper doesn't want you there, since we were a good 15 minutes in from the main highway.

Well, camping in a campground isn’t always the safest situation. Campgrounds do not necessarily keep the “unhoused” at bay. We’ve had late night fights involving guns in the campsite next to us, physical fights take place in the middle of the night, domestic abuse that follows too much drinking, and creeps cruising the campground looking for young girls…all within county, state or national park campgrounds. Always, always, always stay alert.

If anything at all it’s something better than nothing. I was is same situation with strange dogs that attacked my neighbors. I thought about the bird feeder ground poles that could have helped. Never again will I get caught without nothing. Even a shovel stuck in the ground. ❤❤❤❤😊😊😊

Here in the Pacific Northwest ( California, Oregon, and Washington, especially the larger coastal cities ) has WAY more sketchy and homeless people living on the streets is because: We are taking in other state's homeless. They come here because this kind of behavior is not tolerated in their own home state. Also way more freebies are being handed out in these blue states. And we have better weather...Is it right? No! It's an out of sight, out of mind situation. Each state needs to deal with their own homeless folks. And stop sending ( not physically ) them out west for us to deal with.

All of my camping has been within a days drive of home south of Atlanta, except for two trips to the Black Hills. On the most recent trip, last fall, Ileft Sturgis (after an RV rally) and stopped at the city campground located in the park, at North Platte Nebraska. Just after sundown I got hammered with two intense thunderstorms, both with small hail and one right after then other. But the rest of the night was people walking down the road thru the campground and further into the park, talking and making noise. apparently the city does not restrict access to the rest of the park after dark. I suspect that these people were not there for good reasons, most likely drugs were involved. The thunderstorms had already spooked me and hearing people pass by all night really spooked me. Next time I will stay at the Golden Spike tower/museum at the rail yard, and listen to trains all night. You have good ideas and advise, thank you.

Had no issues personally, but my Aunt and Uncle many years past, were boondocking on desert and in bed around midnight. They heard tires pulling into their gravel area and soon heard a large screwdriver or crow bar prying in their door frame. My uncle yelled out once.....prying started again. He then shot his 22 through the metal door. A moment later, tires tore out from site and the loss was a small amount of metal damage from pry bar on door edge and one small hole (22) in middle of door.
