This video inspired me to pick up Brigand: Oaxaca, and it's got a certain very clunky charm to it. More than anything, it reminds me of Hard Time. Both are bizarre passion projects created by one person. Both try things that someone who was hoping to turn massive profits or break into the mainstream games industry would be too scared to. Both have massive amounts of quirks and hang-ups. And both are absolutely fascinating and worthwhile to play, even if they're sometimes buggy or frustrating. Because, like you said in the review, it's always rewarding to play something that is exactly what its creator wanted it to be.
Yeah, the biggest value of these jankfests is that they were made by men who aren't cowards, who have nothing to lose, who dared to be stupid, I hold nothing but respect for these folks.
I need you to know that I use this video to fall asleep on an almost nightly basis. I love your content, and I especially love how insanely janked this game is, and the combination makes a great bit to crash to. Thanks for all the relaxation and sleep, homes.
I am exactly the same way. Something about it makes it amazing to sleep to, I don't know what it is but damn is it effective! Even just hearing the opening line at this point makes me sleepy!
this game has 29 reviews..... I'm glad you picked it up and show it here. Especiallly those games are games that should be known. This is what gaming can be and should not be(broken beyond belief). Trying new things out that only really works in games. Instead of improving graphic, improving what can be done in gameplay - yes gameplay wise it is mostly stagnant nowadays. Sure it's broken and everything is held together by duct tape, but it is unique and I don't mean that like "it's special-bad". You truly find no other game like that.. Maybe the openworld and rpg-elements, but not this... theme and how every element comes together. I think it's great you choose always those special kind of games. Subscribed to you is truly worthwhile
This autoplayed while I was doing stuff in another room and so as a consequence I listened to 90% of the video without seeing what this game actually looked like and boy howdy I could not have been prepared
Your love of jank is admirable. It's kind of how I like to read old pulp novels and stories. Yeah Faulkner and Hemmingway are great but it's only in the pulps that weird shit like Lovecraft can happen. I'm glad shit like this game and the Xenus series exist.
This was one insane trip from finish to end, a fascinating example among single person dev projects, showing just how nuts such games can be when everything is on one person's head. Thank you very much for this crazy island jaunt of utter insanity! Funny enough, this inspired me to look up a melee only deus ex playthrough. Strange for what videos can inspire a person to look for.
I'm back here again. My son is 15 months old. I quit my job and went into freelance editing. This is still on my RUclips download list, and I'm listening to this as I try to sleep. This, and your coverage of Evo are your best work.

Hey Snake, since it's been 5 years since this review, and the developer has continuously worked on this game, it would be interesting if you would revisit it, to see the improvements and new content.
@@BDtetra Syndicate Black Ops (Basically EYE 0.5 on GoldSource) is also good, although it's designed around co-op/multiplayer, so it's very unforgiving.
I keep thinking this during a lot of these videos. He could even do a playthrough on commentary comms and/or livestream, I recently played a good chunk of EYE coop with the max number of players (at least what the server could handle) and it was a surprising amount of fun considering how difficult it was at points racing other players to get to the objective I wanted first.
Yes, this game is janky and rought but does it have soul and depth. I love this game a lot. Thanks tehsnakerer for covering this absolute gem and brian for spending the time to make this wonderful game!
What immediately jumps out at me is that this game uses assets lifted straight out of the old crappy FPS Creator software, the predecessor to the equally crappy Gameguru.
So... I got through Brigand, and immediately happened upon this video. Feels very vindicating listening to you go through it. Gotta say, few games these days make me so happy to finish them as Brigand did, and not necessarily just because it is - as you say - exhausting to play. But through the hardships, jank and exhaustion, I ended up emotionally engaging with the bloody thing, and beating it filled me with fullfillment. Brigand: Oaxaca is such a trip, it's never enough to just say a few words about it. But cheers for the video, and cheers to Brian for all his hard work.
Well there is the hypothesis that alcohol production was the main impetus for human societies to transition from a hunter-gatherer scheme to an agrarian one. Why sit in one place all the time for vegetables that you have to work your ass off to get when you could just follow the deer migrations? You'd probably only do it if there was something else that you had to sit still for a long time to get as well, and something _really_ good.
Holy, I thought Xenus was as weird as it was gonna get. That said I’m kind of glad I was proven wrong. This video just reinforces why you’re my current favorite game reviewer, maybe tied with Ross Scott’s Game Dungeon.
I honestly love the idea of the game though the developer's inexperience pulled the game back, the post apocalyptic concept is not well implemented as it add the player to an environment that builds around him instead of the opposite and there are not many changes on the environment as it looks more like a dried land with fantasy creatures, the story is rather interesting, the movement is clunky, fighting is clunky aswell but you have to make a gun based build as the game is unbalanced and thus destroys replayability, a lot of thinks are hidden as they are expected by the player to be found rather than guiding him to them, some elements are well done like the inventory shortage, i hope the best for the developer and i wish he learns more about making a great game in many ways.
This is so ugly, jenky, makes no sense, its all so wrong that...somehow it's...so right? It's like looking at a blank canvas, but it's not blank and instead its full of like, weird stains, and it smells a bit, but somehow you can't look away and i've finished it once already. So...thanks for...making me buy this?
I somehow doubt Brian will ever see this, but I just want to say- I think this game is fucking inspiring. An entire RPG, jank as shit but functional and not even necessarily poorly written- all made by one guy with a dream and a pipe.
What a specimen of a game. I truly feel these types of games are few and far between now a days. You hardly ever see games that are just games now a days. And this is something truly special. I hope Brian can keep pumping himaelf full of alcohol and weed in order to create more games like this in the future.
i have never watched a video about a game that i didn't know existed and been so thoroughly entertained by it from start to finish. the vibes of this game are immaculate and i'm absolutely stunned by it
We all had that thought of making our own game. This madlad did it. Props to Brian for going through with it and doing his game. And for his massive support.
God damn. Thank you Snake for enlightening us about this, and thank you Brian for making something with so much single handed love and effort. As someone else so neatly put it, you're boots on the ground. Mad respect for both of you and so much love for both your works
I come back to this video every once in a while just to hear someone calmly and casually explain the insanity that is this game. It is kind of a piece of art in of itself. Sidenote: Ever considered doing one of these for Cruelty Squad? Not sure if it is the right sort of jank game for you, but there’s plenty of weirdness for you to matter-of-factly describe :D
Snake: I'm sure somebody must have told you by now, but did you know a huge amount of the lore for this game appears to be lifted straight from the novel "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson? Some stuff taken from the book includes: the nuclear weapon wired to the guy dying, Uncle Bob (both the name and the concept; I think it might have been like two PMCs called Uncle Jim's & Admiral Bob's in the book), the privatized CIA, and arguably Carmen's backstory (seems very similar to the backstory of YT from the book). I bet there's probably more that I'd recognize if I played the whole game myself. You should read it, it's pretty short.
Ya, I think it was Admiral Bob in Snow Crash, but he wasn't a main character. And Machete 2 (terrible movie) also did the nuke attached to the vital signs thing. I did directly steal the Skull Gun implant from Diamond Age, but I think Neal Stephenson would be OK with that. My favorite book of his is Reamde, though, which came out too recently for me to have ripped shit off from.
I'd actually recommend playing Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. While there's literally no story, the gameplay factor and the crafting is practically infinite. I guess the biggest issue would be to make it look fun in a video, even though it's unbelievably fun.
how do you find These games? the closest one i found to this was "War in Vietnam" wich is a german shooter from the early 2000s wich can be played through in About 2 Hours.
I honestly can't recall where I came across Brigand, it was either just by sifting through games on Steam stoore (or more likely in this case) I was told about it by a friend or fan, I've covered enough weird things that now people send them my way.
well yeah CI has made tons of shitty shooters in the late 2000s and just recently began to make AAAish games. But the games Tehsnakerer covers are usually quite large with interesting mechanics.
This is right up there with My Summer Car and Pathologic in a certain breed of games to me. Games that are positively insane, batshit hard, and janky as can be, seemingly following no game design common sense, and yet, end up being a rock with nougat filling, for those willing to put the effort into playing it by its own rules. They're games that're what the designer themselves wanted to make, not trying to be anything else, and honestly, I think stuff like this is more inspiring to me as a wannabe dev than games that're super polished and objectively fun to play. Like, yeah, those ones might be "good," but this feels like it's accessible. Proof that with hard work, someone as dumb as I am can buckle down and make something I wanna put out there, or..something like that. I think about these games a lot, and I mean, a lot, but I don't quite have Teh's ability to put things like this into easily concise words. Just that even tho I don't plan on putting myself through them, these types of games are among my favorites out there.
Oh hey, right as I finish typing this, Teh mentioned the magic words. "Brigand is what Brian wanted to make." I guess from watching this as one of my comfort videos, I've started to pick that up without realizing where it was from. Cheers, Teh.
Just went back to re-watch this classic video for what must be the third or fourth time. Thought I'd take a moment to thank you for your content, particularly this video which introduced me to it. I absolutely love your critiques, on games I will probably never play, and have no particular interest in; if that isn't a sign of quality, I don't know what is.
1:21:01 "fixes a bunch of other bugs, most importantly a bug in the brigand scripting language that made the '' (not equal to) boolean not work" jesus christ, how is this game running at all?
I must've watched this video atleast a dozen times (not always from start to finish). Something about your presentation and the weirdness of this game keeps me captivated and wanting for a re-watch. Decided that I'll buy this game even though I'm certain I won't enjoy playing it. Just wanted to share that. Thanks Tehsnakerer and Brian for hours of fun (and possibly more?)
I swear to god this review is the one I enjoyed the most, even above xenus 2, white gold, and I didnt even think that was possible, I've seen that one twice. Oh shit you did a review on hunt down the freeman! You crazy bastard you
Years after watching this video I have finally gotten around to playing through Brigand and I honestly think it might be one of the most peak RPGs I've experienced, despite everything going against it and probably thanks in no small part to Brian's dedication with patches after all this time. "Enemies are faster than the controls allow you to react" is far and away the game's biggest flaw IMO but I think once you adjust to it and all of the game's systems click together, coupled with the extremely low time-to-kill, the vision really comes through and you feel like a crazy badass surviving moment to moment and pulling off impossible missions. I lowkey love the Baroque as endgame enemies and think the game does a fantastic job of selling the threat that an entire faction of absolutely lethal cyber-ninjas should present and conditioning you to fear bumping into the bastards at any moment lmao
I actually really enjoy this setting. It's oddball enough to make it stand out amongst the litany of other post-apoc settings out there. I only wish the creator realized that choice is important in a game like this, and didn't narrow things down and constrict the player for his own gameplay reasons.
Yeah, It's very clearly Fallout-inspired, but only through the general features than the lore itself (the general tech level seems much closer to today) but also ventures out and incorporates elements from other genres like *kinda* cyberpunk and *kinda* fantasy, and it seems pretty clear that a new society, one taking full advantage of the tools of the past, has been rooted for some time.
32:19 I'm pretty sure that the Tio's face texture is directly lifted from Grand Theft Auto Vice City's player character texture, like it's Tommy's face; just edited in Paint with the to make him blonde (or slightly old, I don't know.)
I did not add a banana to the cell. I don't know why that banana was in that cell, but I have to sleep.
Why remove companions ???

Both are bizarre passion projects created by one person. Both try things that someone who was hoping to turn massive profits or break into the mainstream games industry would be too scared to. Both have massive amounts of quirks and hang-ups. And both are absolutely fascinating and worthwhile to play, even if they're sometimes buggy or frustrating. Because, like you said in the review, it's always rewarding to play something that is exactly what its creator wanted it to be.
Yeah, the biggest value of these jankfests is that they were made by men who aren't cowards, who have nothing to lose, who dared to be stupid, I hold nothing but respect for these folks.
supposedly it was made in the same engine
It is both really cool and a damning indictment that you had *the* developer on stand by for troubleshooting
“I think I like it, [but] I do also know I hate it.”
That’s one hell of a box quote for you.

Coming back for my yearly pilgrimage through this religious experience
This was one insane trip from finish to end, a fascinating example among single person dev projects, showing just how nuts such games can be when everything is on one person's head.
Thank you very much for this crazy island jaunt of utter insanity!
Funny enough, this inspired me to look up a melee only deus ex playthrough. Strange for what videos can inspire a person to look for.
I'm back here again. My son is 15 months old. I quit my job and went into freelance editing. This is still on my RUclips download list, and I'm listening to this as I try to sleep. This, and your coverage of Evo are your best work.
This is exactly the stuff I watch your channel for, long-form reviews of games 10 people have heard of. Incredible.
Your playing series is great. I found you through your jojo video but now I finally got around to the hunt down the freeman video and am now binging all your vids. Keep up the good work
enjoying the click?
I don't remember how I discovered tehsnaker but man am I glad I did. I've enjoyed the playing series so much. And have fallen asleep to the playlist many times.
Hey Snake, since it's been 5 years since this review, and the developer has continuously worked on this game, it would be interesting if you would revisit it, to see the improvements and new content.
1:13:02 omg i'm in the video
Ew
Hearing White Gold's driving theme during the Island segment gave me a good laugh...
this reminds me of an even more jank version of e.y.e. divine cybermancy- which you should also review!
It technically is. EYE is great too.
Everything other than the actual game length and the lackluster ending was great about EYE. I loved that game.
Every weird game is eye now. That game is definitive
Jeez, those are engines I haven't heard of in a while. They're perfect for crappy steam games.
It also uses RPG Maker sound effects. I'm not sure how I feel about knowing that.
If Brigand is the second best, what is the best?
@Matthew Newcastle no WHICH the horror game is best darkbasic game - love it =)
@@ПётрПавловский-щ1х Fucking hell I forgot about Which. That was a weird little title.
I want you to know I've watched this video more times than I can count. Both parts the actual review and the game being so unique. Thank you both.
The twist that melee may have been the correct path was hilarious.
So it's like Dues Ex and Oblivion had a baby and it wants to be New Vegas.
Weed and alcohol truly is the driving force for humanity
Boiling Point: Mexican Edition
Render Error is confirmed as a descendant of Saul Myers.
With the Strangers in Paradise trailer, “Chaos is restless” has suddenly become a lot more relevant.
Chaos is restless.
Raos is Chestless.
*CHAOS IS RESTLESS*
Chaos is restless.
Choas is restless
Screw.
This video really helps me sleep. It's great but for some reason Tehsnakerer reviewing it makes me very relaxed and knocks me out.
If you want to headcanon it that I forced your hand I'm cool with that, I'd love to have that power.

I take it this the canon spin-off to boiling point, then? Saul always knew that he'd live forever.
Man is unstoppable, barring extreme circumstnaces
It's Xenus 3: Mexican standoff.
@@peppermillers8361 Wouldn't Precursors: Saul Meyers goes to space be the third one?
@@elloo98
If it had Saul, then maybe, but it could be the fourth one.
If you mute the video, it's a weird game.
If you watch and hear, it feels like a surreal experience.
This video is very special
I somehow doubt Brian will ever see this, but I just want to say- I think this game is fucking inspiring. An entire RPG, jank as shit but functional and not even necessarily poorly written- all made by one guy with a dream and a pipe.
Thank you. I stole a lot of ideas from Neal Stephenson novels, tbh.
It's new year. Celebrating the new year by playing bayonetta, animal crossing, and watching this. Hope it's better soon.
Keep the faith
Your videos are so much fun to watch, keep up the great work man! And that Brian, what an absolute legend.
I legitimately paused the video and googled the game when you said it was released in 2017. I thought this was some obscure early 2000s eurojank
It's time for the yearly rewatch of this mad journey of a game. Chasing it right after with the dlc/sequel really added so much, you have no idea!
What a specimen of a game. I truly feel these types of games are few and far between now a days. You hardly ever see games that are just games now a days. And this is something truly special. I hope Brian can keep pumping himaelf full of alcohol and weed in order to create more games like this in the future.
THE PASSION PUT INTO THIS GAME ACTUALLY ENDS UP BREAKING IT!
the official Brigand: Oaxaca catchphrase: "it was broken, but then it too, was patched"
Always a pleasure when you upload!
Woooo!! Another video I'm going to watch a hundred times
i have never watched a video about a game that i didn't know existed and been so thoroughly entertained by it from start to finish. the vibes of this game are immaculate and i'm absolutely stunned by it
We all had that thought of making our own game. This madlad did it. Props to Brian for going through with it and doing his game. And for his massive support.
Brian is not the hero we deserved, but the hero we needed.
This is now one of my favorite playing videos of yours, Tehsnakerer. Well done. Please never stop making these.
God damn. Thank you Snake for enlightening us about this, and thank you Brian for making something with so much single handed love and effort. As someone else so neatly put it, you're boots on the ground. Mad respect for both of you and so much love for both your works
Back here again. This video is comfort food.
This is the kind of stuff i come to this channel for ! Nice Vid
Everytime I want to sleep I watch this video, now I can't finish the video because I fall asleep everytime I watch it.
I'm 5 minutes in and I'm so lost.
The weed and alcohol really coming through
I'd actually recommend playing Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. While there's literally no story, the gameplay factor and the crafting is practically infinite. I guess the biggest issue would be to make it look fun in a video, even though it's unbelievably fun.
I'd pay good money to see a movie that consisted of your four characters forming a rag-tag sort of A-Team and taking on Oaxaca.
That would be the most dysfunctional squad ever formed. I’m in.
how do you find These games? the closest one i found to this was "War in Vietnam" wich is a german shooter from the early 2000s wich can be played through in About 2 Hours.
I honestly can't recall where I came across Brigand, it was either just by sifting through games on Steam stoore (or more likely in this case) I was told about it by a friend or fan, I've covered enough weird things that now people send them my way.
Go on Gamersgate and filter out FPS games below 10 bucks, you’ll find tons of games like this. The Code of Honor games can be beaten in an afternoon.
well yeah CI has made tons of shitty shooters in the late 2000s and just recently began to make AAAish games. But the games Tehsnakerer covers are usually quite large with interesting mechanics.
It got recommended to me on Steam, since I had recently bought the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy.
My story of finding Boiling point: Road to hell is a simple one. I searched for a farcry 1 open world equivelant game and there it was.
"Brigand is what Brian wanted to make."
I guess from watching this as one of my comfort videos, I've started to pick that up without realizing where it was from. Cheers, Teh.
Absolutely love these long videos on these wierd games
The creepy thing about this video was that I was rewatching the Xenus 2 video yesterday.
1:21:01 "fixes a bunch of other bugs, most importantly a bug in the brigand scripting language that made the '' (not equal to) boolean not work"
jesus christ, how is this game running at all?
I love you for making these hour+ videos. No offense but its really useful to sleep to!
None taken, I get it, and thank you
Well, I can add this alongside Boiling Point to the list of janky games you've introduced me to that I'm gonna try out some day.
You crazy bastard you
this is like if you were able to make a game based on the brain activity of a guy who's been comatose since 2000
Years after watching this video I have finally gotten around to playing through Brigand and I honestly think it might be one of the most peak RPGs I've experienced, despite everything going against it and probably thanks in no small part to Brian's dedication with patches after all this time.
This game was so frustrating I broke my fucking mouse because of the God-awful shooting. Still love it, though.
Man did I like this playthrough/analysis. Instant sub. Keep em coming boi

"Most broken game covered so far." *including HDTF* holy... (only a minute in)
I actually really enjoy this setting.
