To be honest, the Blue Screen of Death is one of the best ideas Microsoft ever had. In the event of a kernel panic, any other OS would either snow crash or switch the graphics to some useless screen in ROM (lookin' at you, Macintosh). Meanwhile, DOS would at least give you an error code and maybe a backtrace, so you can figure out where things went wrong and report the issue.
