Why Is Everything So Cheap at Grocery Outlets?

- There's a weird feeling when we walk in and see NAME BRAND products and half the price... how does that even happen? Well, it's interesting. Today I get a chance to go into the store and break it down for you. The main reason is due to the fact the outlet stores are selling OLD product. Now, it's not so old that it's bad for you, it just expires sooner than in the initial stores, so it can be marked down to help clear out inventory without too much of a loss. Did you know this? Let me know in the comments if you shop at discount stores like this!

Yeah, we know. I don't give a shit. That bag of chips will be gone in a week.
2-3 days max!😋
2 hrs**
The chips will be gone that same day
😅
Right. Oh, no! The Best By date on these chips is in a COUPLE OF WEEKS! Who tf keeps chips that long? And even if they did, chips don't go bad like old milk or something. They'd probably be fine for at least a month after that date anyway.
1 week for milk...its like 8-10 days usually here at big grocery stores. And chips...you gunna eat em before the "expire"
Milk in EU is ultra pasteurized and is shelf stable. I kinda wish they did that here.
Gonna*
They do, you're just buying the wrong milk. Dairy Gold for example, lasts a LONG time. Then again, I'm on the west coast so it might not exist in other places.
Laika pfp wow , ive not seen something sw related in years since i last played.
Here in Pennsylvania our milk is high like $5 a gallon. There's no savings in buying 1-2 day off milk from the Outlets than week+ dated from the grocery.
People dont get alarmed by expiration dates. Those dates are for retail to move off shelves. At home, if stored properly, things last longer if not consumed right away.
You're so ignorant. Those expiration dates are used by retail to move off shelves because if they sell a product that is spoiled, they can get sued if a customer gets sick. Therefore, if you purchase the same date on the label, that means you MUST consume it that same day. Something doesn't have to taste bad for it to be spoiled and some people have horrible taste buds so they don't realize they are eating something that can get them sick.
@@israelvaldivia2686you're wrong.
@@israelvaldivia2686 No you don't have to consume it by it date on the package, should you drink milk a week after it printed date? no, but it will still be fine a day or two after. Dry products have even much longer period that they can be used after printed date for which why you seen printed on those see a phrase like "for best taste use by"
@@israelvaldivia2686it’s hysterical that you would call someone ignorant while publicly displaying your ignorance.
My general rule is a month out of date is fine unless it's dairy.
Kroger has food that expires really soon, and full price.
Every Kroger i go to everything is fresh minus clearance.
Maybe it’s your Kroger not mine 😮
Exactly. I always check expiration dates at Kroger now. It has happened too many times. Normally I don't care about expiration dates, but dairy and meat definitely get rancid around the exp date.
Kroger are for the yokels
It’s Kroger own by who again . They them these
This is actually a great thing. The food isn’t being wasted and people are saving money. Better financially and for the environment.
It’s a win, win.
It is, it's so much better than them throwing it in their garbage disposal you can't dumpster dive from. You're also paying for it to be clean and old. Grocery outlets are probably good for big families on a very tight budget shopping for groceries a week at a time.
Yeah cuz corporations care so much about people and d the environment 😂
Except for grocery outlet charges insanely high prices for stuff they buy for scrap dirt cheap
@@Pheoniex just so you know your name is spelled hella wrong lol. Its "Phoenix"
@makk206 LOL know that. It's intentional but, thanks anyway.
Grocery Outlet is fantastic. We should check the expiration date at every store. Another thing GO does is cut the price to less than 50% on random items like canned salmon Etcetera
The expiration dates are not necessarily a set date, doesn’t mean that the product will be unable to be consumed. In today’s economy this lower price option means that you can buy some groceries without breaking your budget.
I love Tuna sandwiches I go there to stock up on starfish brand can tuna for only $1 while my regular grocery store wants $2.39 or more per can
Mmmm canned fish. Bit of mayo or whipped dressing, sprinkle of Mrs Dash, spread on bread with some iceberg lettuce and a side of chips. That's an A+ lunch right there.
in the town i live in walmart is so much cheaper than grocery outlet
i eat things immediately so this isn’t really a negative to me
This is what I was thinking. Why would I hold on to chips or milk for a few weeks or the milk for a week.
Same. I'm homeless in my van and can drink a half gallon of milk in a day.
@@Network126good luck getting back on your feet!
I don't have the time to go grocery shopping every other day to eat them right away so end up buying weekly or bi weekly
"I see this as an absolute win"
It makes sense for people who have a bigger family who will probably eat or drink it before the date runs out
Bro gas station by me the food is already expired and it’s full price
That’s a health hazard big time, you should report that so that the gov sends inspectors to check the place out. I’ve seen a few shady gas stations but never with food being expired.
Normal Corner Store Activities.
Same with a lot of Dollar general/Family Dollar stores. Always have to read the dates because things be expired months ago.

I love grocery outlet! Plus it’s a franchise and often owned by local families, win win! I go to grocery outlet for all my snacks and things I can find, then hit Giant for the few things I couldn’t. I stock up on my kids oatmilk, $1.99-2.99 for even the most expensive brands. It’s such a blessing to have 1 nearby!!
I love oatmeal!!! Is it really that cheap!😅 Ironically I’m typing this while hungry but live maybe 5 minutes from a grocery outlet I’m about to Check it out this weak that’s awesome!

Fresh milk is good for 7 days past the date of sale and in that 7 days you have a chance to either use it or you can freeze it so it's still a deal
Regular fresh milk normally has a shelf life or around one week ANYWAY 😂😂😂 So this is just NORMAL MILK 😂
And yes, I agree with you. Most of the time, it lasts up to 7 more days after the expiration date
Frozen milk is terrible, once it freezes and thaws out again it is never the same
@@AlissaSss23not in my experience. When I go to a regularl grocery store the best by date is usually 3 weeks out from when I purchase the milk. I have a gallon in my fridge right now that expires on the 16th of june
Unless you live in Florida. I was there for an internship and I swear my milk kept expiring BEFORE the expiration date! I think it's the humidity.
We had Grocery Outlet it went out of business years ago, over here in hawaii. We miss it!
I bought a few Alaini Coffees that are normally 3.49 at the grocery store for 1.25 at a dollar tree and they didn't expire for over a year--the reason for this was it was a specialty flavor that wasn't selling super well, and some stores obviously wanted to get rid of it, but it actually tasted pretty good.
When will people learn the difference between best before and expiration dates ?!
even expiration dates are SUPER conservative
@@nickm7447on most things yes, the only thing I wouldn't play around with is raw meat.
There may be a difference, but still not trying to gamble.

I love Grocery Outlet. We finally have them on the East Coast after many decades it’s nice to shop there again. 😊
Before grocery outlet there was two stores on the East Coast that sold items for much cheaper than grocery outlet. Grocery outlet has an insanely high markup they buy that stuff really really cheap
Idk what to tell you. 🤷🏻♂️
It’s the cheapest I’ve found without items being on Weekly Sale. And I’m happy they’ve finally made their way here. I shopped there with my family on the West Coast and were able to get by when we otherwise wouldn’t have.
Recommendations for anyone on the East Coast:
Grocery Outlet
Lidl
Aldi
Ollie’s

I don’t know for certain, but I’d figure those stores are way less franchised or not franchised at all, have way less employees, cover/stock way less and not as diverse of foods, and otherwise are more successful than those other business.
But again, I don’t know. If it’s better to shop at those other stores, then they’re better.
Plus as a general theme, I don’t feel as though markups are inherently bad. It’s how you do business. I feel like markups that make things _overpriced_ are bad
We consume our food in a week or if I find a great deal on butter or cheese
Or milk I freeze it. Love my grocery outlet
We are getting one here and I'm stoked !!! Expiration date doesn't mean alot to me on most things. But I will freeze whatever we can't eat in time just like meat
Even here in the Netherlands at the supermarkets they put special barcode stickers with lower prices on products that are gonna expire in a few weeks til a few days. I can buy a box of muffins that was around 3euros and buy them for 99cemts because they expire at the end of the week. This is better instead of wasting food and creating more garbage.
Well they dont do that always, i live in the Netherlands to. Sometimes they fill a little basket with shitty items. All the other stuff they just throw away
Here is a scam the grocery outlet would sell those for $6.99. they buy them for around a quarter
@@archprizm6066 right like big brands havent been doing that forever…
Right. Pepsi bottles 1 thousand 2 liters and their cost is 1 dollar for 1 thousand 2 liters
Giant here in Pennsylvania does this but they're owned by Ahold (Albert Heijn). Their prices are much better, 75% off is common. Most US stores have gotten stingy, they used to be 50% and now they're more 25%-33%.
Imagine thinking you need to explain things like this to people.
Why u hating
Are you kidding? Half the country is mindless enough to vote for Trump. They need things explained to them.
I'm not poor like you. i don't shop here
No
It is fine.
Even if you know, when the information is repeated, you become more mindful of it in your next purchase.
For real i thought this was common knowledge
I love Grocery Outlet, what dirty little secret? Of course your gonna drink the milk right away, chips expire in a few weeks , its still good after it expires.
Yeah who takes 2 weeks to finish a family size chips bag
I buy expired Old Dutch chips for $2.50 which only lasts for a few days on a weekly basis.
You can also freeze items close to expiration date, this is generally known information
At least you have those in the US. Here in CanaDUH, our grocers rarely give us any discounts on nearly expired items. They will charge full price for as long as they can, or just throw them into their compactors. Greedy until the very end.
Im pretty sure this is common knowledge
Never underestimate people
You would think so
Yeah exactly. I would be embarrassed if I was this guy.

Cool. Ty for explaining that. We have a Grocery Outlet coming to our area so we're going to go there when it opens.
Basically all the shit nobody wants to buy at normal price
Those chips are never going to go bad
There are quite a few "foods" which you could try to feed to something and it would just say "no thanks lol"
What's so dirty and secret about it? Should those items just be thrown in the trash instead of being marked down for people who want them to get them? The dates are right there on the package -- there's absolutely nothing hidden or secret about it.
the sell used underwear that is expired. From victors secret

Gross Out saves me thousands of dollars a year.
Here in the “foodie “Bay Area… I’ve even found organic gourmet ravioli and Rubicon cakes for 1/2 price.
Wine and spirits… 60% less.
Check dates, but have NEVER had anything go bad.
Meats and bacon… eat or freeze.
LOVE IT!
How many products did you have to check to find those needles
Sir we knew this already.
Leave the kid alone, he wants to feel important
Some of those "expiry" dates are more of a suggestion. Dairy and meats, I'd probably not touch if they're too far passed it.
That's not a "dirty little secret" that's a feature! It prevents food waste, and that's a great thing! We ALWAYS shop at Grocery Outlet first before anywhere else. You just have to be mindful of the dates (and realize that those dates are heavily shortened because food manufacturers want you to repurchase sooner rather than later and spend that hard earned money).
Expired doesn’t normally mean bad though right unless stuff like bread , cheese, milk , or other things like non perishable items vs perishable items like chips and candy
Chips and candy are harder to tell when they are stale because of the seasoning and artificial flavors but just like everything else THEY STILL GO BAD
Most products use "Best By" which isn't the same as "Expired". They recommend you throw it away...and buy new stuff.
You can freeze the milk. Plus, its usually good for 4 days after the expiration date.
Same thing for canned goods, meats and other stuff.
I don't trash things because of a date stamp.
I smell and/or taste and look at food, drinks or snacks before i trash them.
You should be looking at expiration date or sell by at any grocery store. Especially discount stores
Keep in mind that the brands are always changing which is another reason you get lower prices. For example, one day you might buy ketchup Brand A but the next week it might be from Brand B. This might not make a difference for most people but if your on certain diet, switching brands often might not be ideal.
They are ok but ALDI and their numerous store brand versions are superb for me. Heck, I now go less to Wegmans and Giant and more to ALDI and sometimes to Grocery Outlet.
Grocery outlet buy stuff by the ton for dirt cheap and charges full retail with maybe a tiny discount
I go to outlet stores and they have certain items already expired. I have cooked with them, ate them, drank them and never once gotten sick. If you smell, taste, or see anything unusual, throw it out. If it expired less than a week or 2 you're good just always make sure the smell, look, and taste are on point.
Normally people will eat chips and drink milk pretty quickly so not that bad
My dad grew up in poverty so even though he makes great money now, he taught me so many tips on saving money. One was shopping at grocery outlets. Yes, the best by date is soon but the best buy date isn't necessarily the expiration date. Those stores are great for shelf stable/dry items as those items can still last up to a month after the best by date. And my family can finish a gallon of milk in a week, so that's not a problem for us.
They dont expire. There best before is close. Best before is perfectly fine to eat after the date.
this dude chews their milk
So I’ll still eat it
I would have thought this guy would have taken the opportunity to differentiate "expiry" vs "best before" in this video.
That and “sell by”
Milk is usually good a week or two past expiration. And when it goes bad, all you need is a pot, cheese cloth, and some sort of vinegar to make decent cheese
Wait, what? Ranch flavored fries! That exists? I need to find this...
They are So good
Most of their dry food can last way longer than even the expiration date. You can help reduce waste and save money. Love the store
I'm in Australia and 1 week is pretty notmal for milk. How long are the use by dates in the US?
About 2 weeks for milk
Those are sell by dates. Not expiration dates. Non perishables....are you guessed it....non perishable.
Old stock sold cheap before it expires and they have to throw it away' nothing devious unless you consider capitalism devious.
Capitalism is extremely devious
🙌🏻 My man… YES! so many of these freshness dates are made up bull crap. And I often have full price milk with close expiration dates as well.
@@vampcramp
Deviously great
@vampcramp yes and no
I know all about Bargain Bin shopping and I know to check their expiration date basically buy at your own risk.
Expiration dates are Meaningless except in baby formulas, manufacturers can nearly put whatever they want.
🤦🏻♂️
This explains why some products are already bad with a few months to expiration while other brands of even the same product can be good even a yr after expiration. I always thought it was a regulated amount of days after a product is manufactured.
@@ya8158theoretically it should be. But not enough people find lawyers willing to sue a big corporation for doing things wrong.
I’ve never had food be rancid upon opening but a few weeks ago multiple chips and snacks I bought from grocery outlet were. This makes a lot of sense
My grocery Outlet is expensive af compared to the surrounding grocery stores...
Yup, the one by my house too is expensive....
It's totally ridiculous I can't believe people are this naive, they buy that stuff by the ton at auctions and the markup is huge
You can freeze milk to extend the freshness! We shop almost exclusively at a grocery outlet. We are buying for the present time, so if something expires soon, it's fine, as we'll be eatong or freezing it.
Here in the UK milk doesn’t last so long, I wonder what they put in it to make it last longer.
Different pasteurization processes, UHT vs. HTST.
@@IndecisiveStoner thanks 😁 my ex is American and I’m allergic to animal milk so I’ve never tried milk over the pong, here we have UHT long life cow juice usually in tetra packs but I know a lot of people don’t really like it. So is most milk over the pond UHT?
@@lilacscentedfushias1852 Most milk in the store here is HTST like the uk and the expiration date is around 2-3 weeks. There are more uht options than in the uk and we also have ultra pasteurized which is similar to uht but needs to be refrigerated because the packaging is not hermetically sealed. Ultra pasteurized is pretty much just used for some organic and chocolate milk brands, although sometimes you see regular milk like that in more remote areas.
I don't know why, but Lactose Fee Milk has an expiration date that is about 2 months. I saw in Canada that Filtered milk also has a long expiration date
@@blairn8748 I can’t do that either, so I’ve seen it in shops but never used it so I didn’t know that. Soya milk comes in 2 types usually, the ones with the ordinary fresh milk and it has an ordinary shelf life & the type I get the UHT long life stuff. I’ve seen both in the other non animal milks too
We shop at one of these. We have a local place colloquially called "the bread store" and it sells bread, snack cakes, etc that are close to expiry. The bread is very cheap, $1 to $2, and the snack cakes are usually from ¢76 to $2. We recently bought a trash bag full of grease and some snack cakes for around $50. The bread was (mostly) for the chickens and the snack cakes were for us.
……and your point is??
He is just explaining?
There used to be a bread store near me. It sold bread and random snacks that were days from the expiration date. But it was cheap AF and kept me fed for a good chunk of my childhood.
Bro this is common sense
Yeah, I'm from Kentucky and most of the time I shop at different salvage stores. The best ones are ran by the Amish. Pretty good bakeries and delis usually attached too.
Yea but where is the real food?
That’s my problem is Aldi. Most of the store is packaged/frozen foods
It's a "best by" date it doesn't suddenly go bad
why would anyone want to hold on to milk for more than a week?????
I like how he was showing the half gallon too. A week for a half gallon is doable, even for one person.
These stores also save on shelf stocking. Put the boxes in the shelves. Also if they're against a wall or an end cap, they'll just park a pallet there and cut the cardboard off. Other stores do this like Aldi, Save-a-Lot, etc.
That's not the actual expiration date of the food you click bait baget
in my city, we call it the dumpster outlet, one version is because they dive other grocery store dumpsters for stock, another version is that food goes bad so quick you may as well drop it into one after purchase :P
Here I am buying stuff that's more than a year expired...
At the three grocery outlets in my community, we have noticed in the past few years that the prices for some of their food are just pennies cheaper than they are at big name, brand store, such as target, Albertsons, Safeway, QFC.
... And?
For most processed foods (like chips, crackers, cookies, etc.) it's not really an expiry, it's best before. Products will taste better before that date, but it's not instantly bad when it hits the BB date. Even some dairy products like cheese blocks, yogurt and ice cream, will stay fresh a lot longer than the BB date.
Funny well known secret, dates are not the death of an item. Printed dates are not the throw away date
There’s three different types of “expiration” dates: best by, use by, and sell by (and there’s also freeze by but I’ve never seen that in my entire life). Best by is when the product will be at its PEAK flavor. Sell by is when the store needs to sell the product by. Use by is the last date that the product can be used without risk
I cant imagine that small bottle of milk lasting 2 days in my house let alone a week! With tea, coffee and cereal, we go through around 4 pints a day 😂
Okay I was certain this was common knowledge. I don't always go to Grocery Outlet but sometimes I do depending on what I'm getting. Just whatever you do, don't bug produce. Their fruits in particular go bad so quickly and in some cases already went bad.
Freeze everything
I worked at a gross out and got to know the manager really well. All those original prices are made up, it's just sometimes they get lucky and are actually accurate. It's there to mislead you into thinking you're saving a lot more than you actually are, especially with things spoiling quicker. A lot of things at grocery outlet are no better value than shopping name brand at Walmart.
Id be concerned if my milk expired in over a week.
You must live in the middle of nowhere
@@alexapexgod4643why do you say that
thats for sure. All the milk we get here comes with a 24hour guarentee; from milked to store its max 24h old. That milk lasts for 7 days + the day to manufacture it.
They sell a lot of expired or near expired stuff. But sometimes a short expiration doesn't matter for some purchases. So it's worth a look
It's a lot cheaper just to eat real food
There's a tiny grocery chain near where I live that does just this. I've gotten stuff from there over the years and have saved tons by getting really good items for cheap
So what you are saying is that food won't go to waste, they are cheaper thus more affordable, they offer business opportunities and at the same time job opportunities, and the only.thing that is bad is their expiration dates are near? That sounds like a win win scenario. It's not like they are hiding the expiration dates, just check these like any normal customer and everything's fine.
That’s not dirty, that is economical and smart. I used to work at the store in Chula Vista, CA. when it was called “The Canned Food Store” which is now the CV. Police station. They had the best cheap wine that was really tasty.
I wish we had a grocery outlet nearby. We only have Walmart, Food Lion, and Dollar Tree, and I’m thankful for them.
The expiration date on food is a sell-by date required by law to be there. After that date they cannot sell you the food because it might go bad before you can use it. IT DOES NOT TELL YOU WHEN THE FOOD GOES BAD. So that milk most likely has 10-14days left on it and if you arent drinking it by then buy smaller containers.
G.O.keeps food out of landfill . Chips dont expire for ages if theyre not opened and milk can be frozen . No idea what the problem is .Expirey dates mean nothing . Use your conmon sense . Look at the food , smell the food , if its ok , eat the food .
I regularly shop at Grocery Outlet & I know why it's so cheap. I bought a lot nearing expiration date like coconut milk or almond oat milk for 99c and I tell you they're still good even after the expiry date. I once bought a massive 1lb Colby cheese & it lasted good several months till we finished it. So many good stuff at fraction of the price in other stores! I'm a fan!!
Remember folks, best before and expiration are not the same. You can eat items beyond the best before date. Some items may require proper storage at certain temps. Even expiry dates can be oushed back if storage is done right
Yes, those outlets have been around for a while. I think the one my dad used to frequent in SLC was called NPS or something
I routinely get food from the back of the shelf so I don’t get things that expire sooner from Kroger/walmart/ Trader Joe’s all the time anyways. Also if the product is sealed it’s generally not bad (even if past the expiration by a bit)
Milk is normally good a couple of days after the expiration date, or you can freeze it (if unopened) and drink it later. Most expiration dates only apply to the product if it is unopened. Chips and most products usually go bad about a week or less after opening, no matter what the expiration date is.
I don't buy dairy or meat from grocery outlet but I do buy lots of other things there. Also expiration dates on shelf stable foods are really just manufacturer required "best before" dates. It's not going to automatically start to rot the second that date hits.
Except if you look at the dates, it usually states best by/guaranteed fresh by, or like you said, they're discontinued/rebranding/etc or the container was dented/damaged/etc. I've shopped at these kinds of stores for years and never had food go bad before I got around using them. The heavy discount alone is worth it.
What most people don't understand is that the food doesn't "expire". That date listed is the "best by" or "premium freashness" dates and are still good for days, weeks or even months past that date.
It depends on what you mean by expiration tho, that milk ( or any type of raw meat, egg products, ext) will start to be inedible around it's expiration date. But things like chips, canned goods and dry goods will be fine months or even a couple years after the package tells you they " expired" for example even salt has an expiry date on it. But it will literally be safe to consume in 100 years
The Grocery Outlets in Florida are much different. It’s a cost plus supermarket and they’re usually found in less desirable neighborhoods.
As long as it’s not produce, prepared, meat or baby products you’re fine buying past the printed date. Those are Best before dates and are used for product rotation for in store purposes and aren’t legally binding so buy away. However check that the product is still factory sealed don’t buy resealed or repacked products.
The only thing I go by the date on is milk and that depends on where I live. Up in the Midwest, you can sometimes get by with another week or two. Down in west Texas, milk starts going bad the day before…
It's called ocen state job lot here too. Also a good place to find batches of rejected product. Example: lot# 14790 of keebler lunch packs met a poorly working sealing machine causing some packs to go unsealed. Quality control sends them to ocean state instead for dummies like me to buy and wonder why every other cookie is stale...
They also sell all the goods Costco disposes of for being out of date, and all the goods that FAIL is 9001 quality assurance inspections.
Ollie's does the same thing. I bought a twelve pack of black rifle coffee drinks there. These are $3.29 for one can at most bodegas, Ollie's had the case for $4.99
Man I missed having a grocery outlet where I live. The mega lunchables were dollar each, who cares if they're expiring? We were kids back then, no one cared about that. I think it's been 20 years since ours close down
I don't know where you filmed that, but the two Grocery Outlets near me are more expensive than the two regional chain supermarkets I regularly shop at.
