On Can't Buy a Thrill these are my two favorite songs/recordings. Fire in the Hole and Turn That Heartbeat Over Again are the gateway drug to later Steely Dan: Royal Scam, Aja, Gaucho in chord progressions. Fire in the Hole is a tribute to Thelonius Monk.
Both songs were nice to listen to. Turn That Heartbeat Over Again was intriguing. I didn’t catch the meaning, but I loved the chorus a lot. “Love your mama, love your brother. Love them til they run for cover…” Thank you, Lee!
Another great reaction, Lee! Listening to these and digging your response makes me pay more attention, and I notice things I never did before - very enjoyable! These two tunes have always puzzled me with their elliptical lyrics and unexpected changes, but they’re both brilliant & worth listening to many more times.
There are very few records in my collection where every single track is good enough to listen to and some are great. This is one of the most incredible of all.
As a teenager in 1972, Fire In The Hole felt like my story. Lazy and everyones crazy and I'm a freak. Nothings changed, I'm still that kid lo these many years later.
Thank you so much for playing my suggestions, Lee! I'm glad you enjoyed them ('Fiire In The Hole' in particular). 'Turn That Heartbeat Over Again' is definitely a 'grower', if that makes sense: you'll hear new subtleties with every listen, so it's a track that's definitely worth persevering with! Thank you once again Lee, I've grown to really enjoy your channel and your observations on what you hear.
I should be mowing, but missed this premier, so I'll get to it later. (The lawn, lol) Edit to add: L33, Back when you first heard "Close To The Edge" I told you that you had to hear Steely Dan. This is the Album I had in mind at the time. Glad you got to hear it!
Lee, great review and insight. Love the DAN! I wish you would dedicate a day for Doobie brothers. Their music catalog is one of the best. would love to hear some deep cuts from the Toulouse Street album, the captain and me,and once was vices are now habits Albums. Please!!!!!
Ned from Spain here yet again Lee. Love ya man but they are so far above the 1977 CSN LP. Those tricky unsuspected changes, odd structure and lyrics plus the sort of Beatle-ish harmonies. A wild one.
Steely Dan is its own genre: jazz, R&B, rock, prog
this album is an old friend
My favorite Dan album - every song's a winner.
Steely Dan is its own genre. This is a great debut album! Love every song! Thanks for Steely Sundays!
I think we all had to listen a few times before it clicked, but when SD clicked they were locked and loaded and it all made sense. Thanks Lee & Lee.

Fire in the Hole is just behind Kid Charlemagne as my favorite Dan song.
Two more brilliant jazz-pop jewels. "Love 'em 'til they run for cover"; I'm not chasing anyone. Pure joy for an old music nerd.
✌🏼🤓🎸🎹🎙🎶❤🍁❤️✨️🕊
"Fire In The Hole" is my favorite Steely Dan song. The piano and guitar solos are genius.
Fagen's solo on "Fire in the Hole" is great. His love of Monk really shines through.
Playing "between the notes"
Still one of my favorite all-time albums; sheer brilliance.
I wore this album out….love the songs to this day👏🏻👍🏻
The piano feature is excellent.
The first one is about whether or not to comply with the military draft or run.
I love the changes in TTHOA I could listen to that song all day.
Both songs were nice to listen to.

Thank you, Lee!
Thank you, Lee H!
Love anything Steely Dan!
The second one is about a thief who killed someone accidently/negligently and he's in hiding.
A couple of real oddities to end the album. But I love them for exactly that reason!
I didn’t see them coming to be honest! But after a couple more spins , they make more sense. Sometimes you just gotta give it a listen or three

Brooklyn is another masterpiece on this LP
Skunk on the pedal steel.
Their diversity in style is their strength.

Jeff Baxter is a real good steel guitar player.
Grooving along with you Lee. Two great songs. Ha ha! I loved what you said about the ‘hydra’ aspect of SD: cut one head off and two more will grow 😂
Brooklyn great song on the album.
I should be mowing, but missed this premier, so I'll get to it later. (The lawn, lol)
Edit to add:
L33,
Back when you first heard "Close To The Edge" I told you that you had to hear Steely Dan. This is the Album I had in mind at the time. Glad you got to hear it!

Their best jam in my opinion is Your Gold Teeth, but I could change my mind tomorrow.
Inspired when rock artists pray in lyrics. There is a prayer to Sti Michael the archangel... protect us in battle...
❤
Good stuff. BTW, every SD song deserves minimum of 5 listens. The last song is about starting over. Love the Dan..
If you look up "Eclectic" in the dictionary it says Steely Dan. Like a box of chocolates LOL
THANK YOU, TRY DONALD FAGEN, BETWEEN THE RAIN DROPS.
Fire in the hole is my least favorite of the album
