How to prepare a honeybee nucleus colony for sale

  • Hello Everyone,
A small part of my business is selling queens and nucleus colonies. It's a hard market to get into when there are such prominent honeybee breeders out there, and most associations work hard to provide their new beekeepers with bees too.
It's important that if you are going to sell nucs that you need to go above and beyond to give the customer the best possible outcome so they recommend you or even come back for more! I try to convert my nucleus colonies into double brood configurations as much as possible.
Not only does this slow the swarming response if the nuc starts to explode with the new queen, but it also provides me with more frames to choose from when transferring to a buyers nuc. I want them to get the nuc home, give it a few days to settle, and then be able to move it straight into a hive.
Concentrating the bees from a double brood box configuration to a single also means that the bees will be ready to fill the full size hive almost instantly when moved over. Most of us get into the hobby because the idea of making our own honey sounds awesome, so I want to make sure that I sell colonies on the cusp of starting the honey making process straight away.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video. If you do, I hope you consider subscribing to my channel and liking my content.
    Hope you're safe and well,
    Greg

Nice, may I ask how long have you been keeping bees, some of those boxes look like they have seen a few season? This has been my 3rd season. I have watched a few of your videos now, I like how you line out your information and presentation. Blessed Days...

What are those hive boxes? I thought they were poly-hives but it didn't sound like it when ya tapped the lid? I don't have any myself so just wondering.

I use predominantly poly nucs from maisemore. I have a few bs honey nucs, but I found them very faffy to deal with. My hives are a mix between abelo poly hives (I bought when they were at a reasonable price) and wooden 2nds I bought from either maisemore, thornes, or simonthebeekeeper (whichever is cheapest during the sales)

Hello. Yes, I sell nucleus colonies. It's not a massive part of my business as I only sell 10-15 a year, but it's definitely something I do😅
