The stalhelm and Brody helm are actual good examples of someone taking direct inspiration from medieval helmets. They're designs did come from older helmets.

Edged armour is designed to guide projectiles after they are deflected by the armour, both for helmets and breast plates, so the ridge on the top and the lips on the edges directs projectiles away from your body once it hits. Not to protect you from falling projectiles. Its entirely practical. I can only presume the front and back peaks are for other practical reasons such as grabbing the helmet and angling the helmet back or forwards based on the situation to protect the back of your neck/head when needed or giving you better vision when youre not in battle etc, additionally adding a face shield or visor during production would make it more costly and time consuming, probably easier to just mass produce a generic symmetrical design

That larger rim is to deflect cutting edge weapons and arrows away from your shoulders. Its no use if the blow gets deflected from a head hit straight to your shoulder.

I love these videos for how educational they are and I just ordered a gp5 mask from Lithuania that comes with the the hose and bag, also has a polish NATO filter

I'd do some more research...Polish filters are typically GOST, and NATO filters will not perfectly fit a GP-5 thread pitch. It'll crossthread and NOT form an airtight seal. If they're Polish GOST filters (like those made by MASKPOL, it'll be fine, but those are not NATO.)
