    I've been collecting watches on an off for 25 years, and I've owned a similar OP36 for five years.
    This is the most accurate assessment of a watch I've seen on RUclips.

    A lot of collectors talk about "Rolex regret". Many get their first Rolex and regret buying it for a number of reasons. The watches are more hype about a brand than real substance. I got my first Daytona at my local AD. This when you could actually walk in and buy a watch. No waitlists or other hurdles. I even received a small discount on the stainless steel model. I was struck by how cheap the bracelet felt compared to other Swiss brands. I never had regrets about Patek, Omega, Vacheron Constantin, Cartier, Tudor, or Panerai.

    • @meetseth3
      @meetseth3 2 месяца назад +3

      They're not real collectors. They are frauds who wanted a Rolex to flex. Real collectors appreciate Rolex and know what they are all about. I have a SS Pepsi and SS Daytona. I got both from the AD in California. It's been amazing owning these coveted pieces. You clearly dont know what you are talking about if you think it feels "cheap" -- go back to fantasy land.

  • @paulcu130
    @paulcu130 Месяц назад +1

    So first, Rolex have been building watches in a very similar way for decades and while some of the dial designs and colors have changed over the years, the core designs of the watch have not. For example, they don't vary their bracelets designs ( they may improve it, but not change the design)and they only carry three different bracelets for their oyster watches, which is what you have. The bracelets are Presidential, Jubilee and Oyster( that is what you have not a sports bracelet). They keep the same design philosophy so that people seeing your watch 25 years from now will know that it's a Rolex. This brings me to the case back. The case back on all Rolex watches have always been the same for decades as well. Flat case back with no patterns, no see through back or fancy designs. Just flat and plain. I think they did this so people gifting the watch or people owning the watch can have it engraved, but that is only a guess. In any case that has always been Rolex's stance for decades. Until now. Last years, because of the "see through" case back craze the watch world is experiencing right now, Rolex reluctantly decided to add their very first "see through" case back on their Daytona watches. This much have been very, very painful for Rolex to change their design philosophy to accommodate the changing watch market.
    Finally, think of your Rolex as a high end brand to Tudor, much like Lexus is a high end brand to Toyota. Toyota is a well built car, but they will use less luxurious parts like lower grade leather compared to Lexus. Also, Toyota tries different designs and features on their cars to see how the market reacts. If it becomes well received over many years then they may try that on their Lexus. Like Lexus, your Rolex is a luxury product, using only the top material in construction, where Tudor ( which for the record is a great watch brand ) may compromise on certain materials to make a less expensive watch. Tudor will also try things in the market that may fail, but if it gets will received over the years they may move that on to Rolex if they see a reason to. Hope this helps.

      You bring up really thoughtful points. I realized after making the video that I was using the word sports bracelet at a high level but probably shouldn’t have in a Rolex video due to the ease of confusion. I’ve never thought of a Tudor watch like that. That’s an interesting analogy. Thanks for letting me know!

    Yeah the bracelet truly is the first sign of luxury watches being worth it. jumping from a normal bracelet to having micro-adjustment is amazing. Also jumping from Tissot and Wenger bracelets to Tudor and Rolex was an interesting experience. The watch slips less but not completely gone but still felt worth it. But moving to having micro-adjustments that you can adjust depending on weather without needing a tool was a game changer for me. Also, having custom leather straps that you like the feel is amazing for dress watches.

    Rolex … Modern manufacturing processes, wide availability - easy access - and mass production of once hard to obtain materials, and technology have rendered a Rolex no more than a status piece. You buy a Rolex just to say ‘hey I spent a bunch of money’. Quartz watches have been beating manual, kinetic, and automatic watches since the 60’s. Rolex quality control isn’t even what it used to be. Solar watches have with radio time syncing and satellite wave reception have also changed the game. A sub $500 watch can be more accurate than a Rolex along with being more rugged, reliable, durable. Artistry. Rolex isn’t doing anything new or groundbreaking. You buy a Rolex to say you spent a lot of money.

    Lovely Oyster perpetual. I like Rolex; they make dependable and pretty awesome looking watches. They also don't drop significantly in value either, so you can always sell it or trade it in for something else easily in the future.
    My problem with Rolex, and this is likely more of an issue here in Hong Kong, is that they're just so ubiquitous. I see Rolexes on people's wrist every single day here, including Daytonas, GMTs. It's almost like wearing a uniform to fit into the social norm here.
    I guess the longer you're in the hobby, the more you appreciate the smaller or less obvious brands. And branding no longer takes centre stage in the choice.

      Thanks Alec. That’s interesting to hear. It’s funny how different things are in different countries; the Rolex problem would be like a paradise to me. We have the problem you speak of but with Apple Watches, even in New York. I wonder if that’s like Omega in London to some extent. We have an event called Windup Watch Fair with many smaller brands. If you are visiting the US, you might enjoy it.

      Well, I am not sure if you mean among those I own or aspire to own.
      Among those that I own is the Longines Heritage Pulsometer Chronograph, which is unfortunately discontinued.
      As a medical student, it has nostalgia.
      As for those that I aspire to own, the list is quite long, but I would say the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Duoface Chronograph after a recent trip to the Jaeger-LeCoultre Boutique at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, CA.
      Very refined and unique.
      Other chronographs on my radar will definitely dissuade people who do not use them.
      Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph, Zenith Chronomaster Sport in Titanium, and, the most 🤯 (I cannot find an appropriate word) candidate is the Spring Drive Grand Seiko SBGC221.
      The list could continue, but the aforementioned models are already expensive enough to be a stretch with a considerable ownership commitment or servicing and even security with insurance.
      The next level chronographs would be with Patek Philippe, Glashütte Original, and A. Lange & Söhne.
      Vacherin Constantin and Audemars Piguet have "simpler" mechanisms with absolutely enviable cases and bracelets.
      Sorry for the long reply.

      Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet have relatively simpler mechanisms with highly enviable cases and bracelets.
      All chronographs have ownership commitments with servicing and even security with insurance due to their value and attention they draw in public amidst thieves.

    Caseback: Rolex were always originally a function over beauty company, and so having an exhibition glass caseback would compromise the waterproofness or at very least give one extra point of potential failure.
    History: Rolex has a very complicated and interesting history and marketing has played an important role, in fact the company was left in trust by the founder so it’s a non profit, private company and always will be, meaning no shareholders to please and water down the quality of the products, all the remaining profits after paying employees go to marketing or charitable causes. (Which is also good marketing)
    Lovely watch, I hope you enjoy it! :-)

      I guess the solid case-back argument might hold in the 50s and 60s when Rolex's raison d'être was making tough tool watches, but no longer seems to hold water (pun intended) in modern times, when it's become a bit of a stretch to consider a brand-new GMT-Master II or a Smurf Submariner a tool.
      Also, plenty of modern manufacturers are capable of making tough, highly water-resistant watches with a see-through case-back. Case-in-point: the Nomos Club Sport Neomatik has a sapphire case-back, 200m water-resistance with just a push-pull crown, and is less than 9mm thick.
      P.S. loved the Zenith Chronomaster Revival Shadow shout-out - that's such a brilliant watch!

      Yes sapphire crystal glass can still shatter upon impact with relative ease if it’s hit in the wrong place, although much harder break than regular glass or acrylic crystal.
      Adrian Barker channel on RUclips (Bark & Jack) recently shattered his Explorer 2 crystal while photographing the watch when dropped onto a rock from only a couple of feet.

    Rolex movements although considered some of the best in the business and being completely inhouse arent considered "beautiful" like higher end haute horology companies. In comparison Omega movements are widely regarded as having more visually beautiful and finished movements so display casebacks are preferred. Rolex historically is about the way it wears and looks on the wrist. The iconic oyster case is instantly recognizable. The oyster, jubilee, and presidential bacelets are still considered the gold standard in watch bracelet design. Real watch enthusiasts know and secretly wish that they could by the one rolex op and end the madness of watch collecting. Wear it with good health!
