Hey guys, Tim here, not super happy with the quality of this first video (particularly the audio) but I've sorted that all out for future videos.
Also you might be wondering why this wasn't filmed at Steve's place with his awesome PC hardware backdrop. We live reasonably close but not close enough to visit each other every day. So all my videos will be filmed at my place.
I've got tons more content coming so stay tuned!
audios a bit muffled but all round good
Hardware Unboxed I thought the audio was just fine👍 Great vid Tim 😎 Can't wait to see some more vids.. P.S that laptop is expensive AF!! Way way out of my price range and do not know why anyone would pay that much for that. I guess if you have the money to throw around!💰💵💸💰
The funny thing is, there were about 10 in stock on Amazon when I was first testing this laptop, and now there are 6 available, so I guess at least four people really have $5,000+ to spend on a laptop
Tim, I prefer the geeky lego backdrop of your place more XD
ahh it's fine, don't worry
Tim did GREAT for his first solo!
Finally, i founs the first video to feature only Tim. Great review m8. Cheers from 2021 :)
Good Job Tim, very solid video and you presented it very well, keep it up!
1080p@60hz

ya and to end up good gaming experience must be plugged in with two large power bricks . then also have to plug in a monitor its pretty much an ITX desktop that flips open with a screen lol
Iamiblaze seems like a waste of power
this is no laptop... this is lapdesktop...
It absolutely is. There's no reason to bother with both A) a machine that has thermal issues & B) a machine with this level hardware... but doesn't sport a 4K screen, when the machine costs this much. :P
imglidinhere and where the CPU falls very short Lossing to a desktop single GTX 1080 in CPU heavy games like watch dogs. SLI is overkill for laptop CPUs they really needed an actual 6700k or 7700k
Nice! Tim's doing a great job as a new host, cant wait till we start to see him more!
Would have been interesting to see the internals and what could be done in terms of upgradability if possible.
"hmm, we just created one of the most powerful and expensive laptops of this generation... What shall we name it?"
"well, it's fast, so put 'VR' in it! That'll definitely sell!"
"good thinking, Sam!"
Lol, so true!
I looked at that HDMI and ethernet port at 2:05 and understood how HUGE this laptop is, holy crap. That's a full-size HDMI port.
I don't normally leave comments on videos, but wow, solid review Tim. Thoroughly impressed!
I don't care for Laptops, but I'm at a point on this channel where I just watch any video from Hardware Unboxed regardless. One of the very few channels in my subscription list where I actually do that.
Not all that interested in super high end laptops but i gotta say Tim, you did a hell of a good job here and i think your gonna be an awesome addition to HU.
I just love the lego backdrop
It is truly beautiful.
Love the first review tim, you covered preety much everything to make this a great review video. You will get better and better over time.
This is great Tim! Looking forward to more videos!
the only benefit i could see with such a low res display is locking the framerate and enjoying a cool/quiet setup. fan would barely spin if you capped the fps at 60.
Yep that's definitely true, particularly in games that run at like 150 FPS
Considering its a Failed Setup with that Monitor as Single 1070 can run most games at 1080p 60hz
Great job Tim, not bad for your first video, btw you have an awesome lego collection!
Tim starts taking over - March 2017
I enjoyed our time together - Steve, March 2017 signing off :P
very minor remark: when talking about the I/O, it might be easier to follow if you read it in order of the focus or left-to-right, etc. Again, it's pretty minor.
Another question - on my GTX 860M laptop, any external displays will end up using integrated graphics instead of the discrete card; obviously my laptop is pretty dated so things might have changed, but do external displays use the 1080s on this computer?
Also, any upgrade paths with this laptop?
Great video overall Tim!
cool thanks
Hey Tim, really liked the video. I like how you compared different laptop's with each other rather than comparing it with desktop graphics. Just a thing though, I think it is important to include the min fps as well since avg do not mean much alone. (if you did mention why you didnt add the min fps then I apologise seeing that i havent viewed this video with sound). But really liked the video, think it is great that you compare laptops.
Yes minimum frame testing is something I'll be introducing at some point in the future. I didn't include it here because I didn't use minimums when testing at TechSpot, so for all of the laptops in the graphs I don't have minimum frame data. Most companies want their gaming laptops back so I can't go and retest the laptops to add in minimum data
Would've liked to have seen some supersampling benchmarks and comparisons.
Would've been a reasonable comparison of what to expect out of an external monitor and can sometimes have benefits to a 1080p monitor.
Two and a half years later and it's still the most powerful in the graphics department.
Holy shit. This thing looks like it came from the 90's.
Great work Tim! loved the video, very concise and informative (y) pappa bless
kek 5 years from now, this power will be in an ultra-book convertable
LitGeekSquad Official definitely not
the lego background is amazing, i think the laptop is 1080p 60hz is for travel and battery purposes not that you want to carry those bircks around
Got this laptop today its definitely better than my old pc ...this thing is AMAZING though its rarely gonna leave the desk ..i got the GS73VR for that though
We need a new name for this, it isn't a laptop... We have ultrabooks, notebooks, now we have gigabook
"The fat useless pile of shit top"
Mitchell Couchman megablocks
The more money than sense book, although there may be some issues with apple over that.
Soooo... to actually play games properly, you need to plug in a monitor and a mouse? Seems to me like a small factor PC that has a mediocre display attached. Would be better if you could detach the display surface-style
If you're going to do sli in a laptop, why not make the second gpu external and optional? So many compromises in this product that make the enjoyment you get out of that extra frame rate/ resolution nothing compared to the crappyness. Your experience using the product should go up the more money you pay, not down. Money is obviously not an object to anyone buying this anyway, so just replace the second power supply with a power supply/ second gpu combo. Have it charge through USB c. Plugin box two when at your desk, reboot and you have sli on your relatively portable laptop.
Oh, and the display is hilarious. That much money for a 60hz 1080p?
Pat Mifsud this is a fucking powerful desktop with a screen... Xd
You sounds more calm in voice of volume then, what the leader's name of this channel are. ^^
Nice review of this insane laptop. The screen is a bit of a let down TBH. Higher res, like 4K makes no sense at 18" but better refresh rates do. So your comment of expecting a 120Hz G-sync is what i expect as well. Maybe MSI should consider that.
I do own an older MSI Gaming laptop, but these prices....well %) You can buy a decent desktop with 2x Titan XP in SLI for that price.
Nice video backdrop, looking forward to The Empire invading Springfield.
For that pricetag I expected full RGB display with AT LEAST 75Hz and 1440p.
A slim 15" laptop with GTX 1070 would be nice. Are there any laptops like that?
Can you review the ASUS ROG GX800VH? And testing it against the MSI reviewed here?
you're a natural at this, no wonder your parents named you TIM
How the bloody hell has someone already disliked his? Bugger off!
Only $9999.99
I think there making the laptop last longer 1080p 1080's in SLI will do very well for a very long time
Why would you buy this when the Sager NP9876 has SLI 1080s, a 7700k instead of the mobile processor, and a choice between a 1440p 120hz screen or a 4k 60hz screen? Oh, and did I mention that it costs less than this?
How was editing this on your new Ryzen system?
Amazing. Handled real-time 4K effects and scrubbing without issue. Rendered pretty quickly too.
Great to hear Tim. Glad we got some variety on HU again!
I think Alienware's RX 470 laptop will do just fine for me.
It'd certainly be a lot cheaper ;)
470 or the 1060 version of those laptops would serve you fine this one is insane over kill for its screen expescially
I would opt for the 1060 version. Same power/heat more or less and more performance. In my opinion in a laptop form factor heat and power matters a lot.
1060 6GB Laptop version is weaker than the 1060 3GB desktop according to redditors. RX 470 8GB laptop performs like the desktop version because its clocks speed is the same and it doesnt throttle. weird....
How much does it cost?
Make the videos even longer. Your videos are so fun to watch. Better than watching G.O.T
the laptop is bigger then tim
Nice review
This was the peak of gaming laptops
Why opting for dual GTX1080 SLI and not single 1080TI?
I'm running a GT83 Titan 6RE with twin 1070s in SLI. I'm looking for a 1440p 32" IPS monitor to pair with this. I'd love your suggestions.
I bought the 8rg yesterday with 1080 sli for 700 Australian dollars
laptops are going back to 2000s . big as a house. if you want power. build a desktop ! plain and simlple. who the fuck gonn keep a laptop on their desk all the time
TomaShen - dude, these probably sell in the low - mid thousands. This is not a trend. Look at razor and Alienware.
These laptops are designed specifically for developers and professionals, for situations where they'd like to showcase their VR software without having to lug around a desktop. It's not really meant for consumers and anyone trying to convince themselves of that is foolish.
A lot of people are scratching their heads at the 1080p monitor but forgetting the *VR* ID in the name. You're supposed to plug in a VR headset and and play VR games on it. It's not practical in the sense that you transport it around frequently, but if I had to set up VR experiences for multiple trade shows I would absolutely take this over any other option.
Also, if you're in the business of stuffing as much tech as you can into a laptop, (which is basically what MSI does), you have to start somewhere.
With 5000 $ I can build a pc with a 6950X and 2x 1080 ti
MinBCraft with 5grand ,sli 1080ti , 6950x and 32gb ram and fully watercolod dual loop and 2tb ssd storage! . and you STILL have money leftover !
TomaShen - yep, 5gtand is really Overkill, I would use like 2 grands on my pc and the rest for monitors, perhopials and deck out my room
I got the Skylake version of this laptop, Kinda sad that I didn't wait for 3 more months for this version but to be fair I much rather have the Cherry brown version of the keyboard on the old one. Anyway this laptop might be expensive but for me its a pretty good value for a laptop with 2 gtx 1080 and to be honest this is the perfect Lan party machine.
I got a 100hz overclock out of the monitors of the laptop, plus its a very high quality 1080p IPS screen that I can edit most of my video and Image on so I would say the screen isn't as pointless as you think. Plus a 18inch monitor with higher resolusion isn't very useful since you can't really see the difference anyway and it's only drain your proccssing power for no reason. also in home use I always plug it in to my 4k and 1440p/144hz monitor anyway and in that case it's become a top end Mini - ITX pc.
Nice, but a waste of money! Why spend 5k on a laptop, go build a desktop one thats more powerful for less money. One GTX 1080 is enough power for any of the games currently on the market.
Cool video, but way overkill and out of most peoples price range. Could you perhaps test some more budget friendly gaming laptops? With 1060s or 1070s? Metabox (aus) have some cheaper options. Would be interesting to see how they compare against the competition
+Jarrad Gray yep, hopefully I'll be testing loads more laptops in the coming weeks
awesome! Looking forward to more of your videos
so they are actually in sli or is one stuck doing phys x? 1080 sli does seem pretty overkill for 1080p though you think for 5k you could at least get a 1440p screen or even 4k
+Damien yep they're actually in SLI
on cpu bound games like watch dogs as it seems the desktop single 1080 at ultra with smaa and temporal filtering in your one test got a min of 80 and max of 92. but i feel alot of that is down to mobile cpus still are not quite matching there mobile gpu counter parts that had a huge performance jump this year. would be cool to see a huge jump in cpu soon . not cool for me though as it would out date my stuff sooner but id love to see it none the less
1080p is much more future proof for newer games than 1440p/4k. Wich means future games will stil run better at that 1920x1080p resolution than on 4k. And not every game takes advantage of sli.
The most complained about thing is the mousepad? I would have thought it would have been the price lol paying like $3k-$4k for "portability factor"
How long to we see a RTX 2080 sli in a laptop??
This thing is obviously designed to drive a VR headset .. not sure why you didn't cover that aspect.
Hardware Unboxed's most brutal Tradition when a new guy is introduced and battle happens off screen and whoever wins takes the channel... R.I.P Steve...
Just kidding.
great review. you and Steve......youtube tech royality. looking forward to more of your reviews
Hey Tim. Congrats for your first video. I'm still failed to find your twitter account.
I'm buying one of these in 2022 for 1000 pound.. Am I mad? People will say you can get a much better modern day laptop for a thousand.. Like a HP Omen or low end Acer predator or something but a love 18 inch big laptops and this is only one I can afford (really want predator 21x 21 inch but at 7 thousand dollars ish I have no chance) any suggestions as to do need to get my head examined? Or is it worth the money??
Predator 21x is from 2017 dude, those old laptops get destroyed by a 3080ti
@@christophegroulx7816 predator 21x only has 1080's.. 2 of em
@@patrickkelly6590 Yes and that gets destroyed by a 3080ti mobile
buy modern laptop, it would be much better
I used to have some of those Lego Star Wars sets in the background.
why not using DSR for this beast?
good job man.
Use Cinebench R15 not R11.5 .. The later one is way too old now and not optimized for newer architecture
60hz 1080p screen ?! Thats an absolute deal breaker for even a single 1080 laptop.
I was waiting so long for this.... said no one ever. Good review, but man... does that not look like a brick "portable" from the 80's?
Nice review Tim! Honestly this type of laptop doesn't make sense at all. just buy a nice powerful desktop and then buy a good laptop like an XPS. And you will probably save some money too.
Nice work! Thanks!
I agree, the display makes no sense... though it will be "future proof" from performance standpoint... will have 60fps probably as minimum for the next 2 years... probably.
From this to the Macbook Pro, I prefer this without hesitation
Just need to put a 2k or 4k screen in it way too much power for 1080p
I love your lego in display lol
they sell a 4k variant
Downsample 1440p or 4k in 1080p, games it'll look super crisp.
You guys should make a gaming channel
U were supooesed to completely crush msi into powder when talking abt the display
The Lego display sets are worth better than that laptop.
as soon as you hear " you have to plug an external ..." on a laptop it's a deal break.
Hey It's Tim!
You somehow remind me of ThioJoe though.
screen should have been 4k, 5000$ is like milking...by the way great review :)
Buy 5k laptop and then buy a monitor and then buy a mouse and then buy a Audio system and then can't take it anywhere . Why don't just make a build.
Nice review by the way Tim
GT83......"VR" perhaps a clue as to what should be plugged into it ? :-P
An iPhone?
Nice Lego Tim. I have some Marvel Lego sets so I really dig the background.
1080p @ 60 Hz display, wtf?
I would rather build a small mITX PC than carrying this enormous laptop. o_o
What's the point of this laptop anyway? It's too uncomfortable to carry around, each GPU has it's own power supply cable, it's way more expensive than building your own PC with 2x 1080 Ti GPUs, etc. It's completely pointless.
OH A NEW DAVE 2D VIDEO- Oh wait
$5k laptop, and they still can't light up the entire face of the keys. smh
Or just don’t buy it? Buy a desktop at this point? What a careless investment to game in 1080sli just to be in a laptop shape and then buy a superior monitor.
love that lego!

Well, no Steve after all :(
you would be surprised with how many people willing to spend 5k on a laptop. i know because im one of them. although i have already got my gaming laptop, but 3 years ago me would throw 5k on that laptop with out a second thought. its ugly though, and im all about looks first, then gaming.
But... CAN IT RUN CRYSIS?!
1080 sli for 1080p 60?!? Wtf!
1080p is much more future proof for newer games than 1440p/4k. Wich means will run better at that 1920x1080p resolution.
but unfortunately not every game takes advantage of sli.
I agree, but for the price it could be at least 1080p 144hz.
it's designed for VR ... i.e. Oculus Rift
Find some games that aren't CPU bound.
"laptop" lol good one MSI. I think my world history 101 textbook is thinner than this machine
Brendan Leach has a better resolution too.
it's too bad that now a-days SLI is a dying tech. cant find too many games that support it.
This thing.. doesn't even look good. I understand the bulkiness for what's packed inside, but it just looks gross.
