PETER PAN AND WENDY IS JUST TERRIBLE

  • Disney sure does like its live action remakes. The Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast were kind of good. Oh, and The Lion King was decent and sported some amazing visuals. Fast forward to 2023 and the age of Disney Plus where the number one name in American culture can't even tie its own shoelaces. Disney has officially lost the plot. Peter Pan and Wendy is now out on their streaming service and is nothing more than a travesty.

Peter Pan & Wendy is in fact the absolute most shallow movie I've ever watched, and I only watched it to see if it held any kind of hope. Surprise surprise, it didn't. Everything in the movie was either predictable, downright stupid, unnecessary setup (without payoff, at times) or just woke shoved in your face. I never thought I'd find the directors more racist for using 'operation human shield' on such a beloved character by muting her and yet using close-ups of her for 50% of the movie, where she does jack shit but watch what happens and fly from side to side! And god forbid that Peter Pan is important enough to carry out a theme of his own, or let the plot be carried by his theme (since his name is also the first in the title, so you'd think he was a little more important and likable) but no, by all means, let every scene Wendy is in show how only girls are good human beings without any development for themselves, because Wendy's character needs to be profoundly understood as a girl-boss. I've never seen a movie go to these lengths to try to prove to people that girls are useless unless they're girl-bosses who do everything masculine better than boys, and how boys are inconsiderate assholes on their own, who just need girls to come along to lead them down the right path. Disney... men and boys come in peace, they won't hurt us or take us to their fathership and take control of the planet.

I've been saying this about Disney, they are sexist. If they wanted to retell the story from a female perspective, just do it. Call it Wendy in Never Land, market it as such, just don't market it as the power belonging to no boy, market it as a girl has the power. Knock yourself out. But they are too sexist to go all out on a girl. They have to do this bait and switch to capitalize on the original IP. When Aladdin came out, I saw what they were doing with Jasmine, I was all in. I hated seeing her have to share. What if she got her own movie, where she quested for the lamp, fought bad guys with her tiger, and assembled a team of girls to change how women and girls are treated in India all while keeping her secret life from her father and suspecting Jafar was behind it all. Alladin starts were her movie ends, Jafar wipes her memories and makes her a polite princess except she is prone to regain her wanderlust from time to time and in her song in Alladin it all comes back. Call it Jasmine, I'd watch that. Disney, you smash no ceiling by marketing these original IP's as their original man centered titles, even putting the man in and nerfing him is still bad, you just hurt both characters. You also perpetuate the stereotype that girls are no fun, sounds like you've done it again turning a dream world into a platform for identity politics and nerfing men, so fun.

That's a good idea, especially that Disney is known primarily for those princess movies and arguably Jasmine is more "marketable" than Aladdin, definitely among their main target - little girls. She's known as one of the classic princesses so sure, turn Aladdin into a proper Disney princess movie and market it as such. Not to say men can't be interested in it, but catering to female audience (the main target) without alienating male audience is a strategy that makes the most sense.

Pity since there was an opportunity to tell a new and fresh version of the original story but it was wasted on a boring cgi effects, bland actors. I would have no problem with Captain Hooks storyline if it was done well but it wasn't, the outcome doesn't feel earned, there is no build up to this moment (the characters are unlikable in this film which affects the enjoyment of the new storyline and this scene). The agenda in this film and dark scenery also damaged the enjoyment of the film, everything looks so bland.

Wendy should be a responsible, sweet, kind, motherly character. The experiences she had with the lost boys is also why she decided to go back, grow up and be a mother at the end.
But here, we don't see those good qualities in Wendy.
Here, we see all the opposite qualities, Wendy isn't someone who take on the responsibilities as the big sister. Instead, other people had to be responsible for her mistakes because they're boys, and she takes credit for fixing everything just because she's "Too strong to simply admit a boy saved her on an adventure she always wanted."
They use human shield for most of the remakes that they did recently, and it's so gross, I want to watch a movie but they give me disgusting political propaganda instead of a good movie, it also seem like they don't have the money to work on the visuals so the colors of the recent remakes always look washed out instead of lively and colorful like they're supposed to be. The lighting in these remakes are so bad you couldn't even see the characters you need to see.

In the animated Peter Pan, during his big fight with Hook, he had made a deal to fight without his flying, which made his victory stronger because it sent the message that you didn't need magic to win. This one seems only to care about the extreme feminism and diversity than what the original story was telling.

We as black applaud when there opportunity for our kids to see themselves in roles that we only got to see whites portray growing up but they have to be able to bring the charisma and facial expression to the role. I am a big Peter Pan fan of the unanimated version but this for me was horrible. I watched it today and will not watch it again nor would it be a movie suggeston. The only thing that I like about the movie is the back story on why there is such hatred between Hook and Peter Pan and there are racial inclusiveness (bad part is the actors that were picked). This movie tried too hard on the political correctness and girl power it just lost the whole magic behind this original story of Peter love for Wendy and which kept him coming back for her again and again. This does not come close to the 2003 non-Disney version directed by Hogan (I have watched so many times and that just in April) with Peter Pan (Jeremy Sumpter) and Wendy (Rachel Hurd-Wood) and Tinker Bell (Ludivine Sagnier) and Hook/father (Jason Isaacs). I am dissapointed that Disney is so much into putting celebrity in the roles that not meant for them (like Tom Hank in Pinocchio). Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.

We as native Europeans, on the other hand, don't like it when our culture is hijacked and americanized to reflect American society rather than ours. 19th century England wasn't as diverse as present-day New York, why try to deny it? Do what you want with your American superheroes and your American creations but respect the achievements of African cultures, Asian cultures, Arabian cultures and European cultures as well, please. Thank you.

Well, that's not to say you don't have the right to like the race-swap, I understand it's fine from your perspective. If Monica Rambeau was reimagined as a Slavic woman (with Slavic people being much less represented in American media than black people), I'd probably be okay with that. But I'm aware that other people would hate it and I respect that and don't call them racist for wanting black American characters to remain black Americans.

@@missAlice1990 ? Not sure where you are going with this comment. Teehee! But realistic reenactment of a specific event or storytelling understandable but I found out that Nazi also rounded up blacks (but that story never told). The reality all races always existed after the first human left Africa and evolved to adapt to their current environment. And because of exporting African for slavery, they were in England also. Peter Pan is an imaginary character and so is Neverland and therefore can be reimagine with all different races but let the actors fit the characteristics and do it justice by being able to carry the part. Peter Pan could fly so he was not limited by war or boundaries, so lost boys could been from anywhere. I liked how the movie Hook did the lost boys (girls are too smart to be part. lol! This new movie gave us equal rights to dumbness.) Series like Bridgerton (I am late to the game but just binge watched), I was shocked that it was very good and made you forget that no way was the race mix and stature but great actors, storytelling, scenery and costume made you forget this was just a reimagine of a period of time. The world is change for the good but also bad. Wendy looked to be 16 and Peter looked almost 12 but neither acting nor presentation provided the magic we are used to. I am deeply disappointed.

I’m black and take zero pleasure in seeing these half baked reboots foisted on the masses. Especially when Disney (and other production companies) are too lazy to create something new and interesting. Instead, they disrespect IP that was fine to begin with and sprinkle in their pretend virtue signaling. They end up looking ignorant every single time.
