Back in the 1960s my grandfather was a engineer on the southern railway. He use to run trains out of union station and through this same tunnel.over potomac river into va. Really cool video.

As a lifetime rail buff, I've ridden trains in 44 US states, 6 Canadian provinces, 3 European countries and Mexico. I lost track of my total mileage around 100,000.
But I'm reasonably certain that my first railroad mileage was over the same trackage depicted in the video, sometime in 1948. My parents did not get a car until 1959, and we always took the train to visit my mother's relatives in South Carolina, over the RF&P and Seaboard.

This is why the Auto Train is on Lorton VA. The “Superliner” can’t fit through the tunnels north of DC.

3:45 Note B&O color position signals. One of the few remaining I'm sure.

How far did electrification go into VA? Looks there are PRR-style cat poles even after the bridge.

It went to the now demolished Potomac yard. The trains would come off the NEC at Landover interlocking, (with electric locomotives. then went onto the present day Landover sub, then went through benning yard, over the anacostia River then connecting with the passenger tracks to Union st Virginia ave, then over the Potomac River to Potomac yard where the electrics were swapped out for diesels.
