- During the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2017 I had the pleasure to film this gorgeous 1992 Audi Quattro S4 IMSA GTO. This beast is powered by a 2.2 liter inline-5 turbocharged engine which is able to produce more than 700 horsepower. The sound it makes is absolutely amazing, especially when it upshifts!

@@alex_micro_cars8429 most cars that raced then and are still around mostly have original motors and same with the ur road car except mainly rs3 engine swaps. My dads had his quattro for years and has had not one problem on the engine.
Audis are crap. I have never seen an old Audi on the road, but plenty in the junk yard.

RIP Wesbank Modifieds. Nice to see and hear the old girl again after 25 years. Previous time was at Kyalami 1994. Hope Ben Morgenhood's Mazda MX6 3 rotor race car also survived. Awesome video.👍
Man i was 8 years old would never forget those 5pots going thru the back straight at Killarney when shifting sounded like bombs going off thru the trees makes my neck hairs stand up.thinking back of those day im very very lucky to own 1 of the 51 c4 urs4s that came into the country. And to answer your question on the mazda we saw it running at Killarney a couple of years back at ford and friends day at Killarney what a sound hearing that car alone on the track

it's not an IMSA car... it was built for the 1992 South African Wesbank Modified Saloon Championship, although I think it has the same engine used in the Audi IMSA GTO cars.
Depending on which chassis this is it actually used to be a 90 IMSA GTO. They rebodied one to make this and then built another.
As soon as I saw the southern sun logo I knew it was for the satcar series....those where the days of great motorsport.
@@miles.a1.9 SATCAR stood for South African Touring Car which were 2.0l super touring cars - this car was for the WESBANK modified championship which at one point had rotary cars, v8s, turbos etc, then in 1996 it turned into a v8 championship

I was a snotkop when I watched this car at Killarney in the Wesbank series. After the race went with the old man to Killarney Hotel and the men imitated the sounds of this turbo over some Black Labels. Was different times back then. Good memories!

I remember the days at Killarney, Westbank modified saloons, criss Aberdeen, and Terry moss (not sure which one drove this one), and sarel v/D merwe driving the cos worth, and Ben Morganrood with the triple rotor Mazda..... Damn!... Just brings back memories...😔😔

Yes IMSA influenced model and based on later model audi, but many cars like this one was built by the motor sports divisions from the respective car manufacturing plants within South Africa. This one was built in South Africa, as South Africa ran the same series or class of cars called the Wesbank Modifieds, built by Audi Motorsport South Africa. Hence the South African (A division of the Rothmans global company) Rothmans sponsor. South Africa car manufactures ( Audi South Africa, BMW, TOYOTA etc.) also built their own group B Rally cars. All these developments was born out of the sanctions againts South Africa due to the current politics at the time within the country, but man they became really creative with their builds.

This is a South African car from the Wesbank Modified series from the 1990s - Engen is a South African fuel company that was formed from Mobil's assets when Mobil left S.A. in 1990 - they have been majority owned by Petronas since 1996. If you want to watch these cars at full tilt search for wesbank modified saloons South Africa, you can also search kyalami, the series was in its prime through the mid eighties up until about the mid nineties, I think this car was racing around from 92 - 94 seasons, not 100% sure but something like that. Sarel vd Merve, Tony Viana, Terry Moss, Willie Hepburn and Ben Morgenrood where the frequent drivers in that time. They where beautiful and powerful in the flesh, a real spectacle.

Joel Smith this car never raced imsa, it's a south african built and developed car that raced in wesbank super modified saloons. It has the same engine as the imsa gto but the body and chassis is a bit different

The fundamental flaw in these older Audis was the placement of the engine so far forward. Great cars though and the sound is epic!
Didn't seem to bother them that much in Trans AM, IMSA and the Wesbank Modifieds ;)

Il 5 cilindri Audi, fin dalle gruppo B è sempre stato un motore pazzesco, anche il sound unico. MA mi sono sempre chiesto, chissà perchè hanno scelto di fare un motore 5 cilindri, invece di un 4 o di un 6 in linea come ad esempio la BMW....è pura curiosità la mia, ma me lo chiedo da sempre!

The chirping sound is it wastegate chatter or the BOV? I'm hearing some racing series like WRC (world rally championship) don't use BOV with their turbo engines. HELP!
Wastegate, I have an audi 100 s4, and makes the same noise, but smaller and smoother...
It has no big so it is the pressure escaping through the intake and turbo

Cyrill Gebert its turbo flutter, not running a blow off valve on the charge side pipes of the intake. The high pitch is due to small intake piping diameter

Is it because the small piping means smaller volume, and that pressure pulses are not damped ?
Deezel Riggs the smaller the higher pitch from my experience, I’d assume due to less echo
I remember going to Kayalami as small boy (5-6 yo maybe) and these things were LOUD, the turbo sounds are much loader when you are there
It’s the boost pressure going back down the charge pipe and hitting the turbo causing it to momentarily spin back the other way. If you had a release valve it would go woooosh not sound like a load of squirrels.

Nice video, but you should do your homework; there was no IMSA entered Audi S4. This may very well be a re-bodied tubular space-frame IMSA GTO Audi 90 Q from the late 80s
This wasn't an IMSA car. This one was built for the Wesbank modifieds series in South Africa in the 90's

It's all-original. It's basically the Audi 90 IMSA GTO-inspired version of the S4 which raced in South Africa's "Wesbank Modified Saloons" serie in the early 90s.

That's because it *IS* an Ur-S4, which was based on a 100 C4. Basically a performance model of it. And this particular S4 GTO is also a South Aftrican "Westbank Modifieds" saloon racer that was inspired by the Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO, IIRC.

Even as an owner of a '94 S4, I agree. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that these cars were a "quick fix" to make them legal for competition. They're South African, and the Audi 90 (the car upon which the more famous 90 IMSA GTO is based) was not sold there, which made it ineligible for competition. The Audi 100 (and it's sport version, the S4) was eligible, however, so these are basically 90 GTO's with S4 bodywork slapped on top, and they suffer aesthetically as a result, in my opinion. It doesn't look like a 90, and it doesn't really look like a 100/S4 either.

The S6 didn't exist in 1992, but since 1994. Both the Ur-S4 and Ur-S6 were based on the Audi 100 C4. Since 1997, the "S4" model name was given to the first generation (B5) of the performance model of the Audi A4.
First gen S4 WAS based on the Audi 100 C4 platform, that`s where the name S4 originally came from.
