    It is shockingly good. It is difficult to be so shocked when our expectations are so high, but this absolutely blew my mind. The texture of the instruments in the recording is practically tangible! I cannot say enough good things about my copy.
    I like Duke Ellington to begin with, and musically I really appreciate what amounts to a mid-sized band and Coleman Hawkins is fabulous as well, but the real headline is the sound quality. This sounds as good as any "super deluxe vinyl" pressing I've ever owned. If you think you like this music, grab this pressing!

      The “real headline” is that this is the only record these two icons of the 20th century recorded together, and it turned out to be a highlight in both of their careers. That the sound quality of this pressing is excellent is a bonus, but it’s secondary.

    So true Michael. What a magnificent recording on so many levels, such as soundstage, images that explode in space and great performances throughout. This one easily checks all the boxes.

      @@brendanoreilly2014 You are correct, mine is on order and I was making an assumption that it would be the same as the Duke MCA twofer reprint of the Coltrane and Hawkins sessions, that has Solitude is on it, it is also in the Tidal listing, it's the best track . What I get for assuming.

    I'm very much okay with the $34 price point, but for some reason, $38-40 really bothers me. And the thing is with price increases is they will stay increased even when costs return back to a normal level.

    Easily one of my favorite albums of all time. I got my copy today and will play later. The version of Mood Indigo on this Lp is phenomenal. The Hawk is a true master of the art. Ps: this Stoughton jacket seems to be better than the others. Particularly the inner cover and seem.

    Man what a time to be a vinyl enthusiast is right. I got this, Art Pepper + 11 and Gil Evans & 10 (and finally the first Tone Poet Chick Corea) last Friday and WOW! They all knocked my socks off. Just amazing!
    This Ellington album really really sound oh so nice. I absolutely love it 😃

    Absolutely Class Act , Must have.. Sam Woodyard on drums.. Self taught he played Top Hat style.. two mounted toms and two floor toms.. Sam was self taught too.. but out of all the drummers Duke had.. including my mentor , Louie Bellson, Sam drove the band like no other.. super creative and fluid.. the rest of the musicians also need no introduction..

    A suggestion to help you with the channel: purchase the book "The House That Trane Built " . The book has every Impulse record listed with the serial numbers listed. Plus the book is fantastic. Thank you for you're channel. C.

    I never get tired of the jazz album reviews. Looks like AS knocked it out of the park once again. $35US street price feels high, but $25-$40 is (unfortunately) about right when you consider we were paying $7-12 for a new album back in 1980. Thanks again for the excellent review and all your hard work!!

    A good thing to remind everyone is 45 rpm is not always better than 33 rpm. If it is the same mastering from the same tape with a lengthy record, sure, the 45 rpm probably going to be louder and has more dynamics. That being said, most of the reissues from this series that I already had on 45 rpm from AP, I prefer the 33 rpm reissues (different mastering). Also a prime example is billie holiday songs for distingue lovers. The classic 33 sounds near identical to the AP 45 rpm, and mostly because it is a 29 min record

    I'm very glad to see Pharaoh Sanders' Karma is coming to the AS series later this year. I thought that the series had morphed into the Contemporary Series, and if I'm honest, those titles aren't that appealing to me. Although I do have both releases so far, so we shall see! It's a pity Chad doesn't seem interested into reissuing Alice Coltrane's albums. If you ever speak to him Michael please mention Terry Callier's What Color is Love. Such an amazing album really needs some special treatment!

    Is it a Stoughton jacket? I think there is a slight loss of quality in the printing and it seems a bit thinner than the rest of the series? In any case, the music remains astonishing. I've commented before that somehow this series eclipses the Tone Poets (and to my tastes that isn't due to the musical styles), it's just that the mastering and pressing are as good as I have heard, time and time again. Great stuff.

    • @lukedermott1589
      @lukedermott1589 2 года назад

      Interesting. I thought the quality was higher than normal but the inner lining is indeed different (and to me even better) that what we’re used to from Stoughton.

    Tolle LP, wie die gesamte Serie. Mal ne Frage an Dich Michael, bisher sind ja 30 Titel angekündigte und es dauert wohl nicht mehr so lange dann sind alle Titel erschienen. Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn, weißt Du ob weitere Titel als die 30 bisher bekannten Titel erscheinen werden.

    Anything that AC/AS touches I’m buying. They have never disappointed. I wish they would press the mofi 1steps. Just got my Clapton and there are fine scratches and something molded into the plastic. It sounds ok but for what you pay for them you would think the QC would be better. The last four 1 steps were all the same. Hairlines!,,
