Best one yet. Thanks Dan, Sam and Reynolds. £1 wasn't enough, I'm pushing the boat out
hey...thank you!
i know the boys probably wont see this but I've enjoyed gone with the wind live every time because I discovered architects with AOGHAU the same year one of my closest friends took his life. The lyrics always hit me fucking hard as while suicide is different to cancer there is tiny semblance in the headspace I suppose and I've cried in the pit every fucking time. So I've always been grateful for the chance to mourn in that way alongside the band but I definitely understand why it may be time to move on, I cant imagine how taxing it must be to experience it night after night though. Much love to them.
I feel this so much. Soon after AOGHAU a close friend of mine also chose to end her life and this song just hit home for me and I just cried trough it during live concerts. It made me feel very connected I I felt like we can get through that "together". But I get it, moving on, overcoming the pain and learn to live with what's left is an important step and they have to do what feels right for them, especially in this situation. Much love to you and to them, we somehow have been together in this.
Dan's sense of humour absolutely kills me every time
He's always on fire. 🤣
Have been an Architects fan from the very early days and one of the things I love most about a new record cycle is that they've never been afraid to make the music they want to make. And for that I've loved every record. Sure I love some albums more than others, but I don't understand how anyone can say they are a fan of a band and then get upset when the band are moving in the most natural direction for them.
No band owes any of us a sound, and I'm just so grateful that there are bands like Architects (and Bring Me who were mentioned a few times here) as well as others who continue to push and mould the boundaries of what a "heavy" band can be.
In summary, loved this chat, love the album, some of you in the comments suck.
Craig, I love how you are snarky, detail driven, joyfully tense, mad talented on the kit, witty as heck, extremely observant and an absolute joy to watch live. I can tell when you walk in a room, it lights up. Keep doing what you are doing. 👊🏼
I've always suspected it, but the architects boys seem like the loveliest people and I wish they were my friends.
Them talking about their older music is exactly how i feel... their 1st two albums hold a special place in my heart but i havent been able to get into their newer stuff i loved the tech stuff.. with that being said i am more than happy with their success no matter how much they changed, they were once one of my favorites.. wishin bad for them would be wild
I love the story about Sam's dog, he is such a kind person.
That was a lovely listen lads, and lots that resonated. Thank you
I love how you got them to speak openly about their old stuff, their new direction and how not everyone's pleased with it, the live shows, Tom's death and their actual feelings. Thank you!
Craig you’re an awesome human being. Thanks for doing what you do.
Sam holding Pamela and playing with her melted my heart. Hearing the story about the rescue dogs was also so heartwarming. Dan is very funny😂
I can't be the only one that now wants to hear an Architects jazz album, right?
As someone who just got into Architects this year, this was fantastic. I was fortunate to see them on Sunday in Glasgow supporting Biffy Clyro and they really know how to put a show on. Can't wait for another UK tour already!
So glad this was suggested to me, felt very special and personal. Much love guys
What a great interview! My favourite band - Sam and Dan are so funny and intelligent and it's great learning more about Architects' creative process and motivations. Thank you, Craig!
I know I'm late to this party, but what an incredible podcast. I really liked Architects before, but this was a great conversation and insight to who Dan and Sam are and what they're on about. Paying for your next avocado 🥑
Sam sitting back and revealing the floof on his lap 🥺🥰 this man lol
My mum almost died the week the Doomsday single came out. She's fine now and that makes me insanely happy obviously. I started crying in the middle of two live shows where they played it. Somehow they touch many aspects of my personality. Architects make my life better since 15 years or so and I can't stand people who just hate on any band that tries to be themselves. Not everyone - sadly - knows what can be discovered when you stop blindly hating and start listening to what they have to say. Thanks Craig, Sam and Dan.
I didn't really know a lot about Dan before watching this, but he's a wonderful person.
Also, I very much agree with their ideas behind these last two albums, but I'd like to see them write music in a more positive headspace. Both for their own mental health, and to see what messages come out of that
This setup looks soooooo good! Really hope you get more recognition and love from all the hard work you've put into this project. 🙏
I must say its a huge sounding record so congrats guys, the shows must be insane I look forward to seeing you guys live in 2023. I will always remember this band no matter what road they choose to create there music, they are still insanely talented and great individuals IMO. Glad you decided to keep burn down my house on the record \m/
Loved metal music in my childhood, but then skipped for over a decade. We went to Architects concert couple of days ago, I never heard a song of them before (my wife bought the tickets, she was a fan before we met). It was overwhelming. Metal has evolved, and I love it. It feels like a new genre to me again. However, great interview, great guys. Big love
27:23 What Dan says about wanting to write the opposite of what the haters are saying just made me instantly think of Trivium & The Crusade record. Whilst it's not in my top Trivium records & is missing some of their signature sound in some ways I do totally respect them for making it when they did & the reasons why they did it. Not to mention there are still plenty of killer riffs & solos etc even if vocally & stylistically there is a bit of a departure for some.
I've always said that the Architects are the best. One of my favourite bands of all time. That being said I never really got into the two latest records, but after this I'm going to give them a few more spins. These guys seem to be so lovable, genuine and kind people, just you can't help but love them and what they do.
Massive props on the podcast. Amazing quality, both on sound and video, a real treat.
I was lucky enough to be at the Brighton show. It was insane seeing the band in such a small venue. I got into Architects after I heard Doomsday, never thought I'd get an opportunity to see them in such a small venue.
The new record isn't really for me, but I respect them all for putting music out that makes them happy. The way some fans act is frankly disgusting; if you don't like it, you don't have to listen to it. You can go enjoy the records you do like, or god forbid, go find more bands that are more your sound...
There's only a few constants in the world... and one of them is Sam and Dan constantly knocking on Ali. Love from Germany and see you in Düsseldorf!
Craig, you're quality of the down beat podcasts has got beyond insane nowadays. Sick job, love listening and now watching too!
I was introduced to Architects by Animals. So I'm not an "OG" fan but after I listened to FTTWTE I was hooked. I then went back and listened to all their albums and I like all of them to a degree. I love the new album. Even if it is extremely different from their previous work. I enjoy it. Good work fellas🙌🙌🔥🙌
Thank you guys for what you do. I saw architects at download and they were one of the highlights and can’t wait to go to their own shows. Great energy, great sound and a great focus on their music
Was very interesting to listen to. I hope they continue to make the music that makes them happy and do the shit they want to do. They're lovely guys and I wish them all the success in the world. I will keep hoping for some daybreaker / LF//LT era jams being played live though, if that's okay. Because I am a young angry man, and I like being young and angry together with others sometimes.
i’ve listened to this pod 4 times and i’ve laughed each time uncontrollably
This is fucking fantastic, I loved every second of this! Truly one of the best and my favourite band ever.
so cool to listen to 3 of my favourite artists ever. thanks Craig for making this happen. With Love and support from Montreal.
excellent episode! Thank you!
I really appreciate this deep level of conversation about all the critical reactions Architects has got and them handling it. It really put things in perspective for me personally. And the fact that Craig creates an environment where Dan and Sam feel comfortable to be as open and honest as they seem here is what makes this chat exceptional for me. Audio and video quality are great as well!
For me what it kind of points it out pretty well is what Sam’s saying there: “It’s five people that have worked on something they like and that makes them happy, and then you can enjoy it if you want to. And if you don’t then go and do something else. That’s it. You don’t need to be annoyed.”
I hate this position of unrealistic expectations some toxic fans have. It’s like - the band is not obliged to produce the music that YOU want but what they genuine feel like doing. Otherwise it just wouldn’t be real and just bad stuff would emerge out of it.
Love from Germany!
Yes.. the video was strong too😂 thanks for all the new bands you enlighten us towards mate 👌
Quality of the audio and visuals is off the charts. Really interesting chat too, exactly who you’d want on the Downbeat, both Dan and Sam are super interesting and thoughtful. Made me consider some things I’d never thought about before. Did you not do the dream fest because two guests would make it difficult or are you shelving the segment for now? I have to say I loved the idea.
Two guests would have made it too hard, it’s definitely a constant segment. Thanks for watching!
@@reynlord666 Great news. Looking forward to hearing some more insane fests! Thank you for the awesome content, keep doing you 🤘🏻
Hearing them talk lovingly with humor about Ali will never get old. I love these guys so damn much.
55:27 talking about not playin 'gone with the wind' anymore since it hurts them so much... I get it, it hurts just listening/trying too sing along. But from thier prespective hundo% get it!!
Great to hear you guys again, have been going to live performances and watching the RUclips vlogs for 15 years, and nice to see return of Ali banter 😂
I'll just put this out there for balance, the album is an absolute banger!! Well done guys and long may you reign and evolve!!!
i’m only 9 minutes in but i have to agree, the architects merch is literally my fave. it really suits my aesthetic and ahhhh i just love it.
Coming back to the convo on the fanbase/reactions after Seeing Red feels very satisfying
Visual aesthetic is great! Seems to be the same vibe the podcast has always emanated. But now in pristine 1080p video!
Paused at 5 seconds, as soon as the intro kicks in with something to the effect of "I've already done an intro and something happened to it", I knew I was watching the downbeat. Good times.
When the patreon started I subscribed for £2 by mistake. This episode alone was worth the extra £1 a month. Good work, love the new set up🤘
Great quality, great conversation. Could listen to this all day. Thank you, Craig.
Let me try my best not to have this be a backhanded compliment.. what I want is to compliment how far you’ve come Craig:
In modern episodes (December 2023/January 2024) it’s AMAZING how much (in a positive way) weight you’ve put on and how great your skin looks, and how relaxed your body language is, and how relaxed you are in your way of being. Your health is FANTASTIC now.
It’s only now that I’ve come back to this episode for the first time in ~10 months that I can tell.
Again, that’s not to say, “Hey man you look like hell in this video!” Lol. No! You look good in this, but you look EVEN better and you FEEL even better at present my friend.
Whatever all you’ve been doing in your routine (gotta say you’re making wonder about those powered greens you sponsor), and it’s not to hang in on one thing: your routine is complex I’m sure, so whatever you’ve done from the end of 2022 through end of 2023 has had FANTASTIC impact.
Keep up your health both inside and out man! We need you here, and I know some ‘internal’ health is far easier said than done, quite honestly ❤️🤝
Thanks again for this episode (and do get these two back on! 😤 come on now! Lol), and keep up your routine my friend!
this is cute thank you. i THINK it might just be £1000 of cinema lighting and a beard but I do feel good so maybe it’s true. Thank you, not backhanded at all! 🖤
@@reynlord666 You’re welcome! 🙃 I’m so glad it landed correctly. And sure, sure, hand it to the new gear 🤣🤝 I am seriously considering those greens you talk about though.
Honestly, whatever all you’ve been doing for brain, spirit, and body has been working man! Keep it up.. 🤔
BTW: check, “Satan’s Hotline,” if you still do! There’s something private there you might find useful!

Looooooooooooooooved this interview so much !
If i can try to put some light about how i feel about the last two records and the expectations behind the sounds.
I'm a huge fan of heavy music since i'm like 5 years old. And to me it has nothing to do with my angryness. Cause heavy songs can be fun or cool (A Day To Remember etc). So basically, i'm an Architects fan since the beginning and i drunk all their efforts, all their pains and supported them along the way cause it mattered to me. And now i'm glad and proud they made it the quite the top level for this kind of music.
So with that said, i'm a heavy music fan BUT, i'm a huge Thomas Newman fan aswell. I love Massive Attack, Blink-182, Devil Sold His Soul, Sylosis, Slipknot, Hammock, Deftones, God is an astronaut, Mogwai, Ocean Size, Jimmy eat world, Steven Wilson, Devin Townsend, Stray from the path, Northlane, Dizzy Mizz Lizzy, ochestral music or even ''popier'' songs like Frozen by Madonna etc etc so it's not about genre or Heavyness.
What is it about then ? ! There's so many variables in such a large sounding spectrum. But I think, as a composer myself, (working my ass off, alone, on my album for... pfff 10 years now), I tried to put sense behing that myself. My songs blend sad or bright orchestrations, trip-hop, heavy distorded sounds together. In short, i'm playing with contradictory sounds cause we are all fueled by contradictory emotions.
Think about bands like Sleep Token : with a lot of pop elements, electronic stuffs but djenty/ metal landscapes. It's not about the "Metal aspects" or the heavyness ass well. To me it's about the grit, the rawness. The same occured with the last Enter Shikary album. I like the songs, i like the structures, the lyrics. But it misses something that was there in albums like The Mindsweep. The same occurs with these new Architects albums. When the sounds feel like there're too polished, so synthetic, too "on the surface" and i know for a fact these songs asked for efforts, and passion. I'm only talking about the result, in my ears. I even bought these last records, so i'm not bashing or whatever. I owe this band so many good mamories and so extraordinary well written songs. I know the guys, i know they put their best in the making of these last two albums, and to be honest, i'm glad they changed their sound cause it would have been soo boring and even dishonest to stick to a sound that is not felt inside, you know ?
I think Northlane crushed it with their last album and it is heavier on the electronic / wave side. Their previous album Alien, was good to me. Good songs, good efforts. But something was missing. They managed to correct everything with Obsidian.
I mean, let's take a last example : Butterfly Caught By Massive Attack. This is by no means a metal songs
And there are lots of electronic elements (the majority i would say). But still, there are raw, deep, unfusing emotions throught sounds and effects that transcends me as deeply as a heavy / metal song.
Sorry if it's confusing i wrote it down in one shot, as a French guy. Have a nice day
I totally understand this comment down to its core. When you know the band puts in a massive effort to make what their hearts are bleeding out and then it just doesn’t correlate. This comment is how I stand on the new Parkway drive album. Shit just doesn’t hit the spot anymore but maybe the last 3 or 4 songs.
Doesn’t relate to the new architects for me but hey that’s the beautiful thing about music right? There’s so much music out in the world today I’m just glad to be living in a time where I can hear it all at the click of a button.
I feel this is a very well articulated article that brings many things to point. I too fell in love with the heavier architects I grew up with, and with the loss of Tom they put out one of the best metal core releases I have ever heard in AOGHAU. From that point on the took a drastic change to the"lighter" side of metal core these days which is what is causing the backlash. Myself personally, I am like you. I love this band for what they gave to me when they did, wouldnt dare knock them down now that they are moving to another phase, will always support this band. But totally see where the backlash is coming from
This was fucking awesome, Craig I've subbed and definitely looking forward to listening/watching more.
As for Dan and Sam, awesome guys, awesome band. Relatively new fan tbh and they're killing it, is it more accessible than the earlier stuff? Yes, but its still got some great chunky riffs and screamed vocals, gets young kids listening to heavier music and will probably get more people into rock/metal/punk/hardcore etc. Nothing wrong with a rock band getting popular and big, like Finn Mckenty says, the problem with rock and metal is its afraid to be successful and wanting to stay underground. That mentality will kill it. Keep up the good work y'all.
The continuation of the Ali saga from the Hollow Crown studio videos to how Sam and Dan talk about their pride for him is a full circle moment for me.
New setup is absolutely killer.
I was thinking the same thing! It’s a shame those videos have been made private. I used to watch them all the time.
@@SamTonkin Those days were truly magical. I’m a fan of Architects from beginning to end but seeing Hollow Crown being made was something really special.
I don't like dogs. But Sam with his dog in his arm... Rarely saw such cuteness 😍🥰 Great interview man, the quality is incredible !
New subscriber and have joined the patreon channel. Great interview, top quality. Thing about architects is they are just excellent guys as well as the best band around today. I love the old and new stuff. Keep doing what you do guys you're the real deal. Cheers 👍
I don’t know that I’ve heard these guys’ music although I’m sure I have, but I love this episode.. I love hearing all the dynamics of their creativity.. I also hate the fact that a lot of the internet and social media is packed to the brim, full of assholes and negative people.. so many of the energy vampires have emerged into the ethos and it’s disheartening.. but I love your podcast Craig! Keep up the good work!
YEESSSSSSS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG!!!!!
Great quality man! Love from Montréal, Canada (the guy with the stick)
From the first couple of episodes, to the start of luxury Communism, to the where we are now is a mental journey really, so happy its come to life as you wanted it to way back then, big up to the Twitch, Discord and Patreon gang #stillwaitingforthespoons
tbh i have not watched the whole video but will say this about Architects and any other artist/band. people make a certain type of music with a certain energy. after some time it gets boring for the artists, after some time they grow out of that style. there are so many reason why artists dont make the same type of music for years on end. i believe architects are just developing themselves and they are ready for something new. im super excited for their new stuff
Another great one Craig, keep it up
Love this chat and love these dudes. Dan slaaaays me every 30 seconds during this episode. Shit looks so good too!
i discovered this just a few days ago, ive already listened to 10 podcast episode an now i can watch them :) love this!
cant wait for more \m/
I am enthralled by this episode
Edit: I loved Tear Gas from the first time I listened to it
Craig this is fucking unbelievable. You seem to outdo yourself every time!!!
Really really enjoyed this one. Love getting some more details out of the band...
- With what Dan said about the tear gas chorus lyrics, I had thought that, so to hear that it's intentional is just brilliant
- And again about the video, seeing you guys have some fun with it filled me with a whole other joy. If Architects are ready to show this side of them to the world then I'm all for it!!
- Oh my god I wish that spit the bone video had been a reality 🤣 Glad to hear the writing/recording process was liberating too!
- God you three are so entertaining. Seeing some really close knit people just have a laugh and chat is always great to watch but especially you guys. Would love love love to see this again in the future!!
- That comment about things sounding the same is exactly what I was thinking. Bewildered as to how people think the last two records sound 'samey' throughout and the songs are 'indistinguishable' from one another, yet they have arguably the most sonic variety of any of Architects' records
Thoroughly enjoyed this!!!
i seen these legends on Wednesday night in Belfast, Fucking wow, was unreal, for anyone not liking the new album or musical direction, go see them live, it'll all make sense, so fuckin good!!
Loved this one! They genuinely seem like great dudes
What a great chat. Pod set up is looking mint too!
this is cinema.
"burn down my house" was an instant win in my book
Just Amazing, Great production and set up Craig.
Wonderful little chat by these chaps ☕️
If this podcast was the new architects album I’d buy it
Loved this one, it reminds me how bands i look up to are just human beings
awesome interview. Cant believe you mentioned adam from killswitch though thats odd! amazing band and albums always delivering.
great talk! thx Criag
Fuck I wish they spoke about Hollow Crown the whole time. It changed my life for the better
Another absolute stoater of a pod! Great to hear loads from Dan, Lucky's origin story and the nuances of being true to yourselves as musicians vs pedalling medicine for fans. When a clever bugger once said "it's not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren't doing it" he hit the nail on the head 🤘🏻
Also, it sounds it's time to retire Gone With The Wind from the setlist, it sounds like the price for keeping it in there is too high
Great chat, could have easily watched another hour and a half.
It feels like Architects have often been on the receiving end of quite a lot of stick throughout their career? I remember seeing them on The Here And Now tour cycle and there were people in the crowd booing and giving thumbs down to any tracks they played off that record. I thought it was nuts. These people had paid to see a band live just to boo them. Makes even less sense than the online hate comments to me.
Great interview.
I think the new album slays. Keep on boys, keep on.
Where has this podcast been all my life!!
77 episodes on Spotify and Apple. From now on they are all video!
Thank you Craig!!
Been a fan since Ruin, and for me its easy to view the band in a bigger sense and not worry about not identifying with an album immediately. I usually come back to them and find a new appreciation for the work. This one has not grabbed me as much but I am sure that same process will happen.
Thank you all for this episode!
I cant understand how people are shocked when architects tries something new, They have changed style like 6 times since they started the band (and that's one of the reasons i love about them.) They do what they think is fun at the moment.
Ruin and hollow crown is basicly straight up mathcore, The here and now and daybreaker is leaning towards Metalcore/Hardcore then comes the Djent era with Lost forever, AOGHAU and Holy Hell and then the 2 last ones which shows a more mature Sound that's waaaaay more "Arena Friendly" than the previous ones which is so sick to see since they are filling up stadiums all over the world!
Your Interviews are A+ Craig and the quality of the Video/Sound is just amazing, keep up the top Tier content!
It's strange how to me it felt like they gained so much confidence to try new things with FTTWTE but then they were not sure about burn down my house. I don't think it's about being heavier or not, this guys are just pretty good songwriters
Burn down my house hits though. Such a solid fuckin song.
@@dylanwallace763 I know right? One of the best tracks of the record
For me the best Architects Album will forever be Lost Forever//Lost Together and I love the two albums after that. The new album is just okay to me sadly, def not one of my top 50 albums of the year, cause there have been a lot, like really sick albums, but it's not bad. It's just not interesting to me.
Anyway, I love listening to the Downbeat and all your pdcasts with closer friends like Brendan Murphy or someone from architects. I love this podcast.
One thing, I wish Architects would do is playing naysayer live again.
The other day I thought of a comparison of bands to clothing brands. You wouldn’t want a clothing brand to just release the same blue t shirt again and again, you’d wanna see different designs, different clothing types etc. in the same way architects now have built a catalogue which gives you the proggresskve heavy tracks, or melancholy stadium rock tunes.
Loved this chat and in stunning hd
these guys are just the bests ❤
At this point I like it when you don't know what you are gonna get with a band it's exciting whether I like the music or not is a different story but it's pretty exciting to me
Awesome episode! That dog is so cute as well haha. Would love to see some Northlane members do The Downbeat.
I can appreciate the effect "Gone" has on the lads but such a shame not to feature it on the setlist... one of their top 3 songs for me.
Thanks for a great episode.
I absolutely love old Architects but I think the last 3 albums are the most sophisticated. For Those that Wish to Exist was album of the year in my opinion
I wouldnt give a fuck if architects went ska-punk. I still love that band forever.
Damn this is a great Podcast! Love the content, Craig. Adverts, sponsors and greed are definitely ruining most of the others, thankfully not this one! New stray album is still on heavy rotation too \m/
Dropearth - This is how you close a door
Spotify April 30th
Loved this love, gonna watch it again now. Go give that £1 for the patreon. And like subscribe and get the GOAT to 100,000 subs. Plus the downbeat clothing is beyond awesome. Just support the GOAT
Got myself 3 pairs of the shorts, and i essentially live in them. Very comfy!
"We thought burn down my house would be a track skip"
that's my favourite after listening to the album for a few times in haha
Love this!!!
I get so torn. Architects was my favorite band but im not really a fan of the new stuff but i still wish them the best. i also get what they're saying about gone with the wind. but that song means so much to me it makes me sad that they dont really play it anymore.
1:13:50 Really quick good piece of advice I think anyone I think can take away for just life in general.
