You're very brave to show us this, and I must say you look super comfortable in terms of playing and memory etc. We all know a moment's enough to throw even the pro's off.
As a 17 yr old I played the slow movement of Ginestera's piano sonata and got incredibly lost, but because the music was so "modern," i just made it up until I landed at a point I knew. You can do that with modern music; not so much with, say, Mozart. My teachers and I laugh about that to this day, 40+ yrs later.

Good for you, glad you overcame that moment and kept on going - and hopefully continued playing by heart and not being scared for the future...

Thank you for showing us that it can happen to anyone - even the most gifted and accomplished like yourself. I will show all my students! (You used to play often with us here in the US with Rhode Island Philharmonic when Larry Rachleff was here. We miss your beautiful playing and great musicianship - and hope you can return!)

You are wonderful! I had a pleasure of playing on stage with you a couple of times and I feel so honored. I love your facial expressions in this video.

I admire you even more for sharing this 🥲 I’m still haunted from one of my performances of a duet I did, I played the violin solo part of the Bach double *on the cello* and, for the solo, I totally forgot what I memorized and started improvising (frantically trying to get to the specific note that would cue the violinist back in). I really appreciate how you just laughed it off, and continued with spirit. I had the opportunity to see you play Dvorak live and get to meet you afterwards 😌 I was so excitedly nervous I was shaking 🥹

Thank you for sharing your "human" moments. Otherwise, you are a godly cellist. Hope future technology allows us for a chip that can be planted in our brains so we do not forget music xD

@@bernie57 No I am serious. It does sound invasive, but don't you imagine there will be a technology where you can physcially increase the memory storage space for human beings? Anyways, I just want to be free of that anxiety caused by memory, though, that is not my only source of anxiety when I'm performing xD

@@stylecineI think it takes away humanity, mistakes are human

interesting thoughts indeed - I say I might agree with you though, that it would take something away from the performance if we take away the chance of maybe getting lost. Indeed, we are humans, and failure and mistakes are part of the journey - not that we shouldn't strive for perfection, but in this case it's slightly different: I didn't get lost because I had poor memory, but because I tried something new, different (as I actually always try to do), and in this case I got carried away and indeed lost my train of thoughts. Even if I had the chip implanted in my brain I am quite sure in this moment I would have bypassed the chip for the sake of creativity and would have gotten lost in spite of it :)

Hello. Also as a Pianist, a lots of experiences of same mistake, I admire and even appreciate of your upload. Nowadays people are so easy to criticize others(even from fellow musicians), comparing live concert with studio recording, determine musicians by misnotes than musicality… this kind of ‘mistake’ should be considered more natural and with humor.
