    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured from the Mega SG.
    2. There is a password system here to resume your game.
    3. I consider the first two to be the best looking of the 16-bit releases. Part 3 played well enough, but its digitized "upgrade" was ugly as sin.
    4. This is also available on the PSP thanks to EA Replay. The Sega Genesis Mini also had it as one of the default games. A Game Boy Color Road Rash II exists as well.
    5. There were 2 very distinct releases of this game in the US. The first was a standard oversized EA yellow tab cart. It also has a budget cardboard release that saw it come on a standard sized cart.

This game is so impressive, like an early GTA! Third person perspective, can walk around the world on foot if you want, or get on your bike and drive. 3D, kinda. And it's all on the Genesis. Always loved it from a technical and gameplay perspective.

    • @arnmrs1660
      @arnmrs1660 3 года назад +2

Road Rash was a revolutionary game. In addition to being able to walk differently as in a 3D game, there are several other features unique to the 16-bit generation, such as taking down opponents from their vehicles. The undulation on the road was also very rare at the time, since the snes games and other competitors had flat tracks (the only exceptions I remember are Super Monaco GP 2 for Sega Genesis and Batman Returns for Sega CD).

Unfortunately, overclocking breaks the controls and causes the bike to turn slower and slower the higher you turn the clock speed. I also discovered the exact same thing happens if you overclock the 3DO version, which leads me to think it was heavily based on the Genesis code.

Great review. I still really enjoy the Road Rash series to this day. I think there never having been a true modern successor (Road Redemption probably closest) means the originals are still great go to games for this kind of arcade racing. As SLX notes though, the choppy frame rate seems much more noticeable these days than I found it at the time. With that in mind could you advise what settings and emulator you used for the 150% in your video please SLX? It seemed massively better than it runs on normal hardware/speed.

@@NintenDub To be fair the fact that so many Mega Drive/Genesis games had poor sound/music was down to some developers not being experienced with the system's hardware and/or having strict deadlines to meet. Lazy programming played a part too in some cases, but none of this had anything to do with the hardware itself. Musicians/programmers like Matt Furniss, Yuzo Koshiro, the sound team at EA and Sonic Team based at Sega, all produced music on the system to such a high standard that it's still listened to and celebrated today. The soundtracks to the original Sonic games and the Streets of Rage trilogy being stand out examples.

Not interested in a 3d version, i just want 16bit 2d style graphics with tons of frames of smooth animation and parallax scrolling. Seems like a no brainier to me and an easy update on 16bit racing / combat perfection. Hey man, to go along with the road Rash videos, you should do a video on Lotus Turbo Challenge series for the mega drive. Here in the UK, all my friends and family back in the day considered that to be sort of a sister series to the Road Rash series, cos they were both published by EA and looked and played similar, and came in those weird cartridges with the yellow bit on them, and had more of that great music that the Road Rash series had. Me and my cousins would swap games periodically, so that they got our Lotus Turbo Challenge cartridge and we got their road Rash cartridge.
Lotus Turbo Challenge was one of those games that EVERYONE had, in the UK. Like how everyone had James Pond II, and Strider. I honestly never heard of Outrun back then. Although I was very young, only like 6 years old. But it's almost like Lotus Turbo Challenge is just Outrun but with more European weather. Lots of rain and snow and stuff in the game instead of sunny beaches. Some levels even had obstacles caused by the weather, like fallen tree logs across the track that you could use as a sort of ramp to jump in the air, or big patches of water or ice that you had to dodge. But yeah, I don't know if Outrun was just not as big a deal in the UK or whether I was too young to know about it cos I wasn't reading gaming magazines at the time yet. But everyone had Lotus Turbo Challenge, and nobody had Outrun. It's weird how stuff like that happens. The US gets very different games that are the popular ones, compared to what was popular in the UK. Like James Pond II, it was as big as Mario over here, but I rarely hear Americans talking about it. Over here, the mega drive outsold the SNES, just like how the Master System outsold the NES, so we just had a sort of alternate universe going on over here lol
Lotus Turbo Challenge was the only game our parents would ever play, too, cos they knew how to drive real cars and so they thought they'd be better at it than we were. And they were right, they were better at it. Though me and my siblings were too young to be good at any game yet
I sometimes go listen to the soundtrack of Lotus Turbo Challenge. And when I've emulated the game before when I'm with my sisters and other family members, all of whom quit gaming 25 years ago while I carried on, they STILL remember that music when I start playing it. You can never forget a good tune

Road Rash II had more polished gameplay than the first, IMO. The first one's handling was very slippery and made for a more frustrating experience. I rented Road Rash 2 a whole lot back in the day and still enjoy it; a lot of people don't like the third game but I do, actually; the idea of a globally reaching illegal motorbike competition is pretty neat, as are the new weapons and the option to upgrade bikes, which meant each one could potentially be useful for longer.

I much preferred the first in almost every dept except the pigs but this is still a classic. I wonder how great it could've been had it been made into a Sega CD title.

@Oscar De La Hoya Road Rash II was never made into a Sega CD title. There was a gameboy color port and a PSP port. It was also emulated on the SG mini.

The game that made me want to have a motorcycle!
For me, this is the best Road Rash on the system. The Diablo 1000 N was always my end game bike.
I also loved the jumps in this game. Hit a stone on the side of a hill at the right moment and your bike will jump so high it legit disappears off screen for a few moments haha! Amazing stuff!

Honestly the Road Rash series kinda spoiled me to the point I found every other bike game I tried a bit boring. I wish we got a spiritual successor to the series with either retro graphics (as to keep the budget low and the sales expectations realistic) or modern ones as long as we get tons of tracks, rivals with different ai behavior/storylines and kick-ass combat and progression.
The main aspect of Road Rash II that hasn't aged well at all is the choppiness; I like the 16 bits graphics but man that framerate is hard to deal with.

Agreed about the music, Road Rash 1's was overall better, RR2's is good (and the title screen music is just as good as 1's) but 1's is just better.

This is my favorite game on the Genesis I can remember playing two players crashing at the same time and both are players bodies have hit each other in mid air and we laughed for about 10 minutes. I have preferred road rash 2 music and compared to that of road rash one. one has music that sounds experimental and too twangy for my taste

I don't think I've ever gone more than a year of not playing Road Rash II, since I got it when it was new. Play with the Wild Thing 2000 for that extreme speed and difficulty. That black beauty separates the boys from the men. At the title screen hold Up, A, and C, and press Start. If you hear, "YEAH!" Then you did it right.
