Helicopter Flight Home from a Friend's House

- COME FLY WITH ME from my landing zone on a friend's driveway back to my summer base near my home. The flight includes a pinnacle departure, the overflight of a cherry drying base with two Hueys -- including the one I flew two weeks later and shared here -- and my usual flyby of my home before the sharp descending turn to my base. This video is short and, at the end, it explains a little why I don't think it's so weird to run errands in a helicopter.
This is the third of three videos I shot and shared that day; I'll hope you'll check out the other ones:

About Me and the Helicopter
I have been flying for about 20 years. My nearly 4,000 hours of flight time is in Robinson R44, Robinson R22, and Bell 206L (Long Ranger) helicopters.
The helicopter is a 2005 Robinson R44 Raven II -- the same one that appears in the photo at the beginning of the video. You can learn more about them here: robinsonheli.c... I own this helicopter. It is the third helicopter I've owned since 2000.
My helicopter has ADS-B Out and is picked up by radar facilities. You can see my track for recent flights on Flightradar24: www.flightrada... This is a great site for tracking any almost any flight, including the airlines.
About the Video
The video was recorded with a pair of GoPro cameras, one of which is connected to the helicopter's intercom system. (You can learn more about the video setup in this video here: • Behind the Scenes: Fly... ) Both cameras record audio, but I dialed down the helicopter sound to about 25% of normal volume so it wouldn't be annoying. Unfortunately, because the air conditioning was on during this flight and it blows towards the camera, the sound of the air conditioning is quite noticeable in this video. (Sorry about that.)
The video was edited on a Macintosh using Screenflow software. Learn more about it here: www.telestream...
The intro music is by Bob Levitus, famed "Dr. Mac." You can find him here: www.boblevitus....
I try to drop cockpit POV videos every Sunday morning and "extras" with more info about owning and operating a helicopter midweek. (Some channel members get early access to some of these videos.) I also host occasional livestreams with Q&A chats. Subscribe so you don't miss anything new! And tell your friends. The more subscribers I have, the more motivated I am to keep producing videos like this one.

Nice short little flight with good views. Thanks for the ride.
Stunning country
Gorgeous views
Thanks for sharing
I like the short flights too. It's like going for a ride with a friend. The views are kick ass, and it only takes a few minutes.
Thanks! Always fun!
Thank you. I always enjoy flying with you.
Any excuse to fly, whether it makes sense, who cares! The joy. Thanks Maria,
_"House keeping!"_ You know @Maria, we're pretty much like doggies near the table - whether you throw us a whole bone or, a mere morsel; we're equally pleased, that you shared! Cheers- _And, thanks!_
Great work
Short and sweet! Thanks!
Appreciate you sharing any flight you do. Some of us will never do what you are doing. So your friendly, engaging dialog is so great and refreshing! Please keep it up!!
These videos are amazing! You're helping me learn about a place in this world I may never visit, so thank you for sharing
Thanks for sharing, that looks like fun. Oregon is beautiful.
Oops. This is Washington. 🤷🏻♀️
Love your vids....
Wow a maid with her own helicopter 😂
I know, right? I don't mind hauling the laundry back, but the garbage really stinks up my ship. Ugh.
FlyingMAir the time when you could do with a couple of panniers on the skids... Or a bambi bucket? xD
How do you become a channel member?
@@FlyingMAir >>> A helicopter with its own maid...😊😊😊
Wonderful, as always!
Great video! Loved it!
IMO, any reason to fly is a good one.
I like it
Breathtaking view love the upload 😃
Fab video. Thanks for posting. 👍😎 I pretend I’m you by flying my Huey around in DCS 😂🤣
Brilliant love watching these vids 👍👍
Some places look very arid while others are green, can't wait for your geologist passenger to visit! It's a real privilege to fly with you and especially the approach and landing - thanks!
I hope to have the first part of that series of videos out on Sunday. But I can tell you this: this area is high desert and the only reason there are green areas is because those areas are irrigated.
Can you tell us some stories, and lessons learnt from early in your career, even during flight training? I think that would be interesting!
That would actually be an excellent topic for a future AMA chat video. I'm going to try to do one of those a month.
@@FlyingMAir Awesome! Can't wait to watch!
Nice video! Congrats from Portugal! 👍😊🇵🇹
Never hesitate to show these. Always interesting 🚁
Better than driving!
Love it....keep them coming no matter how short.
Nice short flight Maria, scenery there is nice also..thanks, and take care..
That's amazing! Off airport landings are so invaluable (especially for new commercial pilot such as myself). Looks like beautiful country/airspace to fly in.
man what a nice area no wonder people in america have helicopters just like that soo nice
Cool!!
I love your channel... your vids always make me smile...
AC in an aircraft is sliced bread! Flying small fixed wings, it's a luxury! Leave it on! I flew a Piper Arrow that had AC. Didn't care too much for the way it flew but that AC was GREAT!
The AC is a real lifesaver when I fly low and slow in the summer.
3:00 just fought about the Huey, what are the odds. What a great helicopter.
rlly nice views thnx 4 posting
Amazing
So long time ago I flew but it remains amazing how fast and smooth helicopter flying goes! Very nice landscape views as well, really like it.
Allo im from canada you fly very good
I'm getting better at recognizing the terrain. 😎
Heck, I drive Ms. Daisy to just get ice cream... she's 89 and does not mind at all ;)
‘Air conditioner’? You are indeed a lucky Mair!
I'm glad you did share it ... curious ... how long would it have taken to drive? ...edit ... lol, nevermind!
Air conditioning, ha I thought you had put a turbine in your ride. Being able to sit down most anywhere you want to is so cool. You just can’t do that in a Falcon 20.
Hi Maria, great views of the countryside , can you just leave the helicopter outside? in the weather or someone might tamper with it?
Yes, you can park them outside. Mine was outside all summer for cherry season. I have a cover for the cockpit that keeps the sun off the interior. If I park it in a safe place -- which I do -- or at an airport, it's unlikely to be tampered with. It's actually a federal offense to tamper with any aircraft, no matter where it is parked.
They like it we love it. Would love to have Nick Zentner from WSU get on your show! We could follow ice age flood routes in real” time!!
Love the nice, short video in part because it fits my available time, so keep 'em coming. One question though... I would think you'd want to try REALLY hard to land on blacktop wherever possible to avoid kicking up dust. A piston engine generally has a decent air filter, but I suspect any dust at all is pretty hard on the leading edge of those expensive blades. Assuming they have a life expectancy in thousands of hours, does the abrasion you see in your environment shorten this life?
Good question! I park off-airport A LOT and the dust does wear on the blades. I owned my last helicopter for about 13 years and had the blades painted 4 times before overhaul. I think it wears more on the tail rotor blades - maybe because they’re in it more or spin faster? - but never had to have any blades replaced before overhaul.
At least your GoPro won't overheat, with the AC blowing on it. :)
How many was the helicopter
So, does the Airbnb guest get a $100 laundry fee to account for fuel and maintenance??? 😂
Follow Maria Langers flights on Flightradar24 Put Maria’s Tail Number N7534D Even if she doesn’t post a flight, you can watch wher she went. Cheers
I don't mind a bit of quiet along the way. As long as you don't fill the silence with music and spoil the whole flight.
I agree with you, but I suspect that the reason you hear a lot of music in RUclips videos is because RUclips recommends that creators use music to “improve“ their videos. Go figure, huh?
@@FlyingMAir The sound of the heli is music enough to my ears :)
Wait. So you can just keep a helicopter in your house and take off around your town? Where do I need to move?
Also what do you mean “hit the tree, been there done that” is there footage? What happened
dhould have waited....you answered me
Any experience with experimentals? Ever heard of the helicycle or mosquito?
Yes and yes.
Do you garage your helicopter or cover the windshield with a cover always, frequently, occasionally, rarely...?
How long and much does it take to be certified helicopter operator
Maybe I just didn't notice until now but does your GoPro have image stabilization? You can see the movement of the cockpit (even though the camera is presumably locked down) but outside the image is, well, more stable.
As of my Huey flight - mid August? - both inside cameras are GoPro Hero 7s with stabilization enabled. I’ll likely use my Hero 3 for an exterior camera.
Can't wait for that!
Jeep tour?
THEN: _"METER MAIDS"_
NOW: _"ROTOR MAIDS"_
😝😝😝😝
Aren't you afraid of flying high in the sky? What's the options in case of engine malfunction?
Looks like you’re always a touch out of balance and could do with a tiny bit of left pedal. Or is it the angle of the camera?
FlyingMAir I think that you’ve had plenty of time to develop bad habits! The fact that you have done plenty of time doesn’t mean you fly perfectly all the time! That ball spends most of the time a few mm out to the left. Sorry you were so offended by my observation!
FlyingMAir I showed it to my instructor today. He agreed with me. I wasn’t nit picking, I was making an observation. I am not starting a career, I do it for pleasure.
I think it’s a pretty poor stance to completely poo poo someone’s point of view and just cite your experience as the reason you’re right. Maybe someone with not a lot of time, who has done a lot of training recently is actually a good person to nit pick these little things. By your logic you can basically never be more right than someone older than you! That’s crazy.
The fact is, you’re a bit out of balance, particularly when in the cruise. My instructor agreed and he has 3 times the hours you do, so there’s not a lot you can disagree with about that! Obviously your cherry drying flying is absolutely awesome. Your control is admirable and you fly really nice.
You ought to have just said, “Do you know what, I’m going to have a look next time I fly, but I think it’s just the camera angle”.
How does one get a job drying cherries in a helo? If I'm not mistaken, a commercial licence is not needed for this, or is it?? It's like having a job as a traffic reporter, you are getting paid to report traffic, just so happens you do that from an aircraft..
If you get paid to fly an aircraft, you need a commercial pilot certificate.
So werid little question would you would you ever by any chance take a fan on a 505 mi helicopter ride to one point and then back awhile later ik probably the weirdest question you've ever had but I'm generally curious about it...
Sure. If the fan was willing to spend $595/hour for that approximately 10 hour round trip flight.
if you had to drive the same route, how much langer would it have taken you?
I would love to buy my own r44. Any thoughts how this could be more affordable. I just have my private license and I want to take trips with the family
Get a partner or two.
I'm sure it's not but the joystick looks very flimsy like piece of copper pipe
It’s probably aluminum.
Hey i am from india you are a good pilot my dream i am fly helicopter ☺️☺️☺️☺️
