Marvellous voice, and excellent enunciation. And I liked the way he tackled the high note - choosing a lower one to equal effect. And only 4 years before he died of Leukaemia. Fantastic. RIP Mr Anderson.
Not only singers but superb actors/actresses also. My wife and I saw the movie in New York when it was first released. Still listening and watching from the beautiful, tranquil Islands of The Bahamas 🏝️🌅🏖️🇧🇸
OMG THIS IS BRILLIANT! A former "Judas" singing as "Jesus"...AND DOING ONE H*** OF A JOB AS WELL!!! Even with that slight line flub at 1:37 and even if he didn't hit that major high note at 2:16, he was incredible!!! He really brought out the true emotion of the song!
I attended his show in Milan in 2000. After a hundred concerts and theatrical performances, that's still the most emotional show I have ever witnessed in my entire life.
Goosebumps. I never knew this existed until today. Where have I been all these years?? Carl has all the emotions. Gone way too soon. Still sad about it. Thank you for this audio.
Oh my! Never thought I’d hear Carl’s dynamics on this song. There was a symbiotic relaxation between Carl and Ted. Thank you. We lost Carl five days after my wife and it was a week- a season- of grief.
Holy fuck,,, thank you so much for uploading this. This is absolute GOLD! Hearing Judas sing as Jesus is something I never knew existed. So much power in his voice! *sidenote* Was this officially released? Or is it a bootleg?
Wow this is my favourite of all time never even. Knew Carl sung this song never even knew he also played Jesus in the musical amazing love Carl's voice pure brilliant
Makes sense, originally carl wanted to play jesus and Ted wanted to be judas but they were picked due to there ability to work together so well, however the roles were switched
As a Drama student I was taught that keeping the show going is the most important thing. If you mess up a word or two, don't sweat it, just move on. Never interrupt the flow of the production bc you can't remember a line.
So Carl has played both Judas and Jesus...okay then...he is just like fellow black American actor Rex Ingram who played both God and Satan in 1936 and in 1943.
What a wonderful and incredible version. just to say, thank you very much for exposing it here.
He had such a powerful soul voice. The amount of anger he can conjure here, so different from Neely's sadness and desperation. What a great singer.
Marvellous voice, and excellent enunciation. And I liked the way he tackled the high note - choosing a lower one to equal effect. And only 4 years before he died of Leukaemia. Fantastic. RIP Mr Anderson.
Such a great, passionate voice!
The casting for the 1973 film really did a stellar job of finding amazing singers.

First listening to this on Holy Friday is no coincidence, he had a wonderful voice, may the Lord be by his side in Heaven 🫶🏻

This is completely incredible!
What a phenomenal voice and actor…..doesn’t get much better than this
Another great singer.
My brain is breaking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Goosebumps. I never knew this existed until today. Where have I been all these years?? Carl has all the emotions. Gone way too soon. Still sad about it.
Thank you for this audio.
Just found out about it now through an analysis of the 1974 movie!!! So moving, what an incredible performer.
Carl Anderson’s Judas was THE best and with Ted Neeley as Jesus that combo can’t be beaten 😀
He may not have the high notes that some other actors playing this role hit, but this was marvelous!
He definately can hot that high notes, he just don't want to do same as everybody does
Oh my! Never thought I’d hear Carl’s dynamics on this song. There was a symbiotic relaxation between Carl and Ted.
Thank you. We lost Carl five days after my wife and it was a week- a season- of grief.
My mind is blown. I had no idea this existed. This role switch gives me real-life goosebumps.
Qué tesoro inesperado. Fantástica versión!

*sidenote* Was this officially released? Or is it a bootleg?
Same, ps its probably just one of the shows many of them did at theatres, doubtful it was an 'official'realease as such
It was never officially released. It's definitely a soundboard recording - probably intended for the cast & crew.
@@bartelbyfloats How did you acquire it? :) I would love to hear more stuff like this!
@@blakeallen1358 Yeah, me too!
Sound console dry recording pre-effect bus. Carl is so note perfect… soulful… just powerful.

@@danielbyrne5402 Thanks for the information Daniel I still get emotional when I watch JCS just like I did when my music teacher had this on
@@evelyng3889 for me it's a family musical, used to sing it as a family every year or more. I think everyone who likes it has a reason or story for it
amazing interpretation. this is among my top favorite renditions now. thanks so much for sharing. what a beautiful powerhouse of a voice.
Cool. A different yet powerful rendition of an unforgettable song!!!
1:37 great save from him
That mistake is so easy to make really
its probably because he started with "I'd have to know my lord" instead of "I'd wanna know my god" :PP

Man ive been searching for this for YEARS! i was beginning to doubt my memory of this. thanks for posting

Omfg!! He even did Ted Neelys run at 3:03
❤
Need to get the earlier version when his voice was stronger. Rip Carl Anderson.
que version mas maravillosa e increible.
solo decir, muchas gracias por exponerla aqui.
What a wonderful and incredible version.
just to say, thank you very much for exposing it here.
Goosebumps
A treasure to behold!
💪💪🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ so GREAT
Often think of Carl - his Agape presence forever etched...
Maravilloso
Was this part of a staging featuring him as Jesus, or did he just sing this one song on some special occasion? I'm glad someone recorded it!!!
What I'm wondering also
Weird hearing Jesus roaring "WHY!?" instead of screeching it.
WHAT??? CARL ANDERSON AS JESUS?? if you can please can get the video performance of this, that would be so nice
He almost jumped a verse lol, bless him
Where did you find this? Absolutely incredible. Thank you!
Very good
This is just like Steve Barton doing Phantom instead of Raoul. RIP to both Barton and Carl Anderson.
Wow now I wish Carl played Jesus at least once that would be amazing but let see if he can hit the high note
WOOOW! Judas sings Jesus😮
Almost Neeley-level
I like him song
Wow that was beautiful he did it he hit the high note okay Carl Anderson definitely should have played Jesus
Fantastic, a little jazz o 5:22 his way
I like both Neeley and Anderson, but I think Neeley is much better
Well, Neeley was built for Jesus. Anderson was built for Judas. That said, I'd love to have heard Neeley in his prime do Judas.
@@enterthedome
Agreed
Both r a SUPER SINGERS
did he actually play the role or was this just a concert?
Ted Neely in the movie best.
At last - a black Jesus & not a usual blond white one ! . . I'm a big fan of Carl & it's very sad that he died so young.
The girl like Judas and Jesus like different believes
I like Judas and Jesse the girl likes Judas
No one can hold a candle to Anderson
And he before and after was just singing some pop sweet songs
