  • A rare, early example of the determination & steadfast perseverance of Steve Harris. . .steering the Maiden ship through the tumultuous, turbulent maelstrom of dealing with Paul Di'anno! THE SHOW MUST GO ON!
Not negging on Paul, I love him and miss his raw energy & punk attitude! He was crucial to the magic & atmosphere of early Maiden. Current Maiden could use some of his brashness & spontaneity, to alleviate their ponderous predictability & stagnation. . .but, that's a rant for a future livestream. . .

True but he's also given up on Maiden at one time, because he couldn't find anyone who was committed to it. It was not long after that when he's invited Dave once again and they've made it work again. Who knows what would happen if Dave wasn't eager to work with Steve back then? Steve would probably focus on his football skills and become a decent striker but there wouldn't be IM. Up the Irons.

    • @ReservoirTip
      @ReservoirTip 2 года назад +23

He's seriously one of the most determined people in all of entertainment. He had a vision for this band, all the way down to ancillary stuff like the artwork and logo, and wouldn't let anyone get in the way of his vision. That's why there were so many lineup changes in the early days: if you weren't committed, he had no use for you.
Which meant that when the band finally stabilized, they were loaded for bear. Everyone who was there 39 years ago is still there.
Steve tells a story that Maiden could've signed a recording contract 2 years earlier than they did. "All we had to do was cut off our hair and play punk." Imagine being 21 years old, with a record company exec holding a contract in front of you, and having the willpower to say no and wait for something better to come along. Amazing maturity.

I think this Harris kid is a good singer and he is gonna go places! But I am worried! What if he loses his voice? He should most def have a very solid back up plan. I recommend him trying the bass guitar --he seems like he'd be GREAT at that --tall, lanky, with a menacing look on his face as he slaps that bass through those future classic Maiden songs like Running Free, Remember Tomorrow, the self entitled Iron Maiden and Sanctuary. Imagine this kid singer scorching a bass guitar on Phantom of the Opera! Hell, if he REALLY wanted to, he doesn't have to give up the singing entirely! Imagine this Harris kid singer turned bassist and upping these irons by forcibly lip-sync singing to ALL of the Iron Maiden songs as his fingers blazed through the blistering fan favorite, Phantom of the Opera! Do you hear what I'm singin' or di'anno what I mean?

YES! This was the Maiden I fell in love with that summer of 79 and 80. At that time they were the talk of all the Music Papers in the UK. I remember racing out to our local record shop in Northwood and grabbing a copy of their first LP (which did not have Sanctuary as it was later released as a single), running back to my Aunts, placing it on my cousin's record player and WOW! Every song was like nothing I had heard before, Pauls vocals and lyrics were so raw, this literally change how I saw from then on and I know or thought (yes thought) if these guys can get a record deal playing this music maybe there is hope for me yet.
1981 while in SA and Dallas TX we got to see Maiden on the Killers Tour, completely wipe the floor of the once Gods of Metal Judas Priest who then were on their Point of Commercialism (Point of Entry) tour. Maiden live (then) played as good if not better than they did in the studio. Another year and Maiden Japan came out and then Number of the Beast and the band were never the same live again. Gone was the RAW energy and RAW performance. While Bruce was incredible in the studio he could not deliver well on stage, not in the three times I would see him yet still favor his work with Samson where he actually sang (beautifully) and his melodic approach unique and a pleasure to listen to.
Thank you for sharing this recording of Steve singing RUNNING FREE, Steve was the friendliest and most receptive of the band to their fans an example of this was 1981 SA TX Harris is standing outside the Holiday Inn on Crocket Street just across from the convention center where they had played earlier... We instantly recognized him and engaged him in conversation here's my 1979 cutting from Sounds and Melody Maker... Steve invited the four of us to the hotel bar for drinks and to continue talking as he of course was thrilled to have such dedicated fans in a new city (that night most everyone were there to see Priest and were less enthusiastic for Maiden who warmed up the show. We four were the only ones in the SA convention center to stand upon our chairs and went mad for Maiden until security chased us around from isle to isle during Maiden's set). Later that night Harris gives us tickets to come see them in Dallas the following night where by act of God, Maiden were given an additional 15 minutes for their set and played Remember Tomorrow and Running Free of course from the first lp. Each of the band then were so friendly, Clive Burr and Dianno and Steve so appreciated dedicated fans in this new continent known as the United States.
As I was a frontman/volcalist myself I idolized Dianno until I noticed his use or misuse of substances which later caused him to be ejected from the band. Surely all parties concerned were sad to come to that point as they had all been through so much in the trenches of the UK, playing a slue of tiny venues and with each performance giving their all to their fans, never was a band with the exception of early Motorhead) that were so loyal back to their followers. Fast forward to the mid and late 80s Maiden of course became more mainstream and that RAWness was polished away.

Brave Steve, yet another burden upon his shoulders and he faced it with honour. For the sake of a similarity, the legendary La Scala musical director/conductor Riccardo Muti once had to face an unexpected strike of the orchestra minutes before going onstage (La Scala, Milan) before an expert and expecting audience to perform one of Verdi operas. None of the musicians showed up. Alone, Muti went on, explained the situation and suggested: determined not to leave you like that, I am going to play the entire opera for you on the piano. Which he duly did: just sat down and played >hours of the opera on the piano, albeit without any singing of course.

He's always done backing vocals anyway. So not too bad. It's a simpler song in the catalog, so he didn't have to be up there in range or screaming or whatever.

Steve does well here, especially while being " left in the lurch " at the last minute, his vocals are strong and clear and go across to the audience, a very dynamic individual indeed, a man of many talents. R.I.P. Paul Di Anno.

@@TalesOfTrueMetal It was a great time (early 80's), right at the birth of NWOBHM, quite a few of those bands played at the Unity Hall, Maiden, Preying Mantis, Saxon, & a resurgent SLADE who the played the loudest gig I've ever attended in that very venue.

@@romanrueda2784 The Unity Hall was only a medium sized venue, so I won't have been tens of thousands, but the place was packed, so I would guess maybe 2000-3000. That being said, I didn't see much of the rest of the hall because I was pressed up against the stage.

@stazjohnson8618 today 1980 seems like a long time but for me Is Not.
In that year we lost John Lennon and in my case I can remember a lot of things in those days, I was in second grade, in high school, always listening to music, like the Beatles Stones. , Zeppelin and many American shit, bands like Kiss Ted Nugget, Arkansas, things like that, but the first time I heard Maiden was the instrumental Transylvania, it was a magical experience.
That day I defined my personal musical taste with the name Metal.
From that day on I wanted to visit England. It took me almost 20 years, but my first plan was to be at a metal concert and I was at a Mötorhead soundcheck, in the London Astoria, I spent long Time there, It was demolished now, But was a nice place for concerts.
I was in a lot of metal concerts all that time. It was 1999.
But I couldn't see Iron Maiden there until now.
So I think you are so luky 🤘🍺
