In this video I will take you on a watercolor journey that took me almost 2 months! Three different versions of the composition I'd envisioned, all the challenges I've encountered along the way and what came out of it {spoiler alert: it's a cute cockatoo}. 💜 REAL-TIME (normal speed) version of this video, along with extra commentary, black & white outlines, will be available on my PATREON feed in June: / annabucciarelli

Wow your sharing of the struggle was so open and wonderful. You are a successful, well known, brilliant, talented, amazing professional artist and yet you have similar troubles, like those of us who are still learning. Not being cruel, but it made me feel good and made me realize I am too hard on myself. I need to be more like you and NOT give up when an idea crashes and burns. I think ALL of your paintings are fabulous, but if you don’t like them it doesn’t matter how many people say yay… I love how you used the leaves as a frame and how you talked about warm and cool and cohesive colours. I love the empty background on the third one. It is so vibrant and yet so peaceful it doesn’t need any more colour. Although you said a simple blurry wash might work… loved that background video too! Really looking forward to the next timing for wet into wet video. Always the hardest part of learning watercolours. Thanks for sharing Escoda’s newest synthetic. Love that company’s brushes thanks to you. How did you feel about the fluid paper? Thanks for this video.
Translating your vision. YEAH. About that. 🤣 When I was a child I would cry over my art because it didn’t look like the image in my head.
My poor mother.
Thanks for the honesty in this video, I feel a lot better about my own watercolor issues. 😁💖
Awww same I feel like I still cry on the inside sometimes lol but that’s OK 💜😊
Hi Anna, this is an Australian parrot called a Major Mitchell cockatoo. You do it great justice in your beautiful efforts. You make me realise that I’m far too impatient and need to put in more time and work on my pieces. Thank you for your generous videos.
honestly? I liked version 2 best. I prefer contrast from the main subject of the painting to the background because it makes the subject pop more. So, honestly, that blue was fabulous! Don't be so hard on yourself... It was honestly stunning
This painting is one of the most dreamy, and fluid pieces of poetic artistry!! I adore this painting the last and best one! One day I hope to be as great at painting as you are!!👍👍👍😃👏👏👋💖
It’s nice to hear a fabulous painter like you sometimes struggles with Watercolour.
Ihanin työ minkä olen nähnyt! Aivan mielettömän kaunis😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I cracked up at the therapy comment (not that therapy is a bad thing, just your characterization of why you need therapy). Thank you for sharing that you struggle too. It really helps me to remember that if incredibly talented pros have off days, then I have to stop being so critical of my beginner attempts.
💜💜💜 Hehe I am so glad someone noticed 🤣 I was cracking myself up while editing!!! On a serious note I am happy you enjoyed the video and definitely we - artists - should be less critical of ourselves, all creative work is valuable even if it doesn’t exactly match our initial vision! 😊
Wow this video resignated with me. I have been struggling this week and this gave me motivation
💕
The cockatoo you painted is beautiful.
I would buy the one you don't like. I love it! They are all beautiful!
Thank you! I don’t usually sell originals but in this case it totally makes sense 😊 I will finish the blue one and post for sale 💜
Hiya Anna, Thank you for another wonderful tutorial. Your videos are always of such beautiful quality and I really appreciate that you openly share your struggles with us. The coin that your designed is stunning: how do you get a job like that? It would be a really interesting video telling us about your job and how you came to be a coin designer. Talking of sable brushes, with the Kolinsky and Tobolsky sable both coming from Siberia I can't see any more being bought from there in the foreseeable future due to the trade embargos with Russia.
Take care Anna, x
Thank you David! 💖 I definitely agree with you re: sable. It will become more expensive / difficult to find given the current events in Europe, and I am more and more switching to synthetics, even doing the entire paintings like this with synthetics only, just to get used to it. Of course natural is easier to work with, but I don't actually feel like it affects the results {only the experience of painting itself} . Regarding the coins - I basically got invited by the Royal Mint after they saw my work online. Something about my decorative {gouache} folk art appealed to them at the time, the first coin was successful, the rest is history:) I really think it was luck + putting my work on social media + my love for intricate details of course :) I'll do more about the coins this year - have lots to show, some featuring watercolors. Thank you for your support of my channel - I am encouraged by the positive feedback on the videos and starting to enjoy the "art" of video editing more and more this year 😊😊😊
@@AnnaBucciarelli You're welcome Anna. You say luck but in your case it's skill! I'm going to join your Patreon group as I really love watercolour and natural history. I've been diagnosed and registered as being partially sighted, and I used to feel like I was in a race to do as many things as possible before I go completely blind, but I got over that after a short while. I live in the County of Lancashire in N.W. England high up in the Pennine hills. Take care Anna and I'm definitely going for the Patreon. David.
thank you thank you sooo much!...actually i learned a lot from this video....and watercolor painting is so important for me to have good marks for my final examination....thank you again....❤❤❤😸
I am glad you enjoy d it! Good little clothes on your exam ❤️
@@AnnaBucciarelli yes💖😁
I love honesty. I faced the same problem when I chose the wrong colour or overdone.. I will leave the painting a side and come back to it the next day, sometimes, miracles happened.
That's a beautiful painting but it's a major Mitchell cockatoo here in Australia they're quite rare, but beautiful birds to see in the wild. You did this bird the justice it deserves and the use of colour brought out the best of this lovely bird. The flowers pair perfectly with it too only enhancing the beauty. I am in awe of the colour combinations and am a great fan of your work. Look forward to all your paintings as they brighten my day and are a wonderful source of inspiration. Thank you for sharing this phenomenal gift.

@@AnnaBucciarelli ... The parrot's feathers are extraordinarily well painted 🎨🥇 If you publish your Artwork of your watercolor wonderful creations, I will be among the first to buy it 🙏🏻🇫🇷😘 Do you sell original paintings ?

Parrott stargazing into Paradise .... very beautiful !!!
Thank you Mary 💜💜💜
I love the blue background !
Interesting, it seems some people do prefer it! 😊 I will post when finished
@@AnnaBucciarelli Yessss !
Lys Stargazer are my favorite flowers 💕 what a beautiful Art piece !!! Bravo
Amazing!!! Thank you!
It’s hard to believe you have wc struggles because all of your work is so beautiful. Now we know that even YOU have trouble some times. It gives the rest of us hope. Stargazer lilies are my favorite - yours are SO pretty. As beautiful as they are, I am most intrigued by how you did the branch. That is SO cool!
I loved the contrasting more cool toned blue background personally. I felt the contrast and overall pallet was beautiful. Art is subjective. One person would prefer one colour pallet vs another, neither are wrong as colour pallets and art overall is subjective.
Thank you! 💜 I agree it’s very subjective and more I am getting used to being ok with my own “aesthetic” trying different combinations 😊
Thank you for the reminder to go for it even if I think I might fail. I’ve been experiencing anxiety around a painting since February and haven’t touched it
You make it all look so easy. I’ve tried it is not. Thank you for all your wonderful talent, subjects and tips
Wow!! Just discovered your channel and blown away at your talent!!!
Thank you Melissa 💗 welcome to the channel 😊
It’s so beautiful thank you!
‘Patient Joy’. This painting makes me smile. Your frankness about your struggles gives me more patience with myself. Thank you. It’s breathtaking.
Thank you Frances 💜😊
Gorgeous work! I’ve learned I need to water down my paints much much much more than I am currently!
BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED, THANK YOU 🙏
💕
So incredibly gorgeous! Can’t wait to join you on Patreon on July 1st! I should be finished your lovely Skillshare classes by then 🥰
Thank you Ashley! 💜😊
Your voice is one of the most soothing female voices I have ever heard, excellent for teaching and I must say, if you ever decided to do meditation voice videos, you would also be a hit! Thank you for sharing your talent and techniques with us, I always am drawn (ha) into your presentations and although my watercolor technique is different,am fascinated with your quality of work. Thank you!
Stunning! And thank you for sharing your details!
Thank you Barb! 😊
Absolutely Stunning 💕
💗💗💗
You are so right about all the different colors for branches! This works so well with the rest of your painting!
Thank you Colleen!
Wow, what a stunning piece!!! I always love your videos & learn something new. When you asked for a name, I instantly thought of "Mitchell's Lillys", as he's a Major Mitchell's Cockatoo (from Australia). Anyway, love your work as always💜
I love your painting. And the bird is very familiar to m e. I love to photograph and draw them. We call them galars and they are the clowns of the bird world. They really know how to entertain. Small flocks of them graze together on the grassy footpaths or in parks. I have often drawn them in coloured pencil. Im still struggling with watercolour.
Sounds amazing - we don’t have them in Canada but I’d love to see them live. How big are they in real life?
@@AnnaBucciarelli They are probably about the size of a crow. Not really big or small. They are parrots. I did a series of drawings of one doing a trapeze act on powerlines. They get really active when rain is coming. I saw some photos recently that someone posted of one of them, as part of a group, rolling around on the ground playing with a stone. They just seem to know how to have fun and everyone loves to see their antics. They are found all over Australia I think. I've seen them everywhere I've been. Yesterday I was out taking more photos and the little corellas were out in huge numbers. The corellas are a type of cockatoo and about the same size as the galahs. But the corellas are mostly white. I have thousands of photos of the local bird life. I have to walk and get exercise somehow and if I have a camera in my hands I will do a lot of walking without getting bored. A few years ago I had a few of the galahs in trees in my back yard and I got lots of photos of them that day too. I started taking photos mostly to give myself resource material for my paintings but I haven't done watercolour for years. I am mostly comfortable with oils or acrylics. EDIT: If you'd like to see some of my photos I am on Instagram instagram.com/sthogan1/ And I found this video on RUclips. It shows them doing their usual behaviour. Not doing any funny antics though. ruclips.net/video/5V4sguleU8Q/видео.html
Anna Thank you so so much.Youve just restored my faith in myself.Recently I've had more mistakes than success and was losing my love of watercolour!!! Just couldn't get it all together. I really needed your video to remind me that even good artists make mistakes.
Love your work and Thank you so much💜🙃
Of course!!! 💜 It always goes in phases and it’s easy to get discouraged but I think the key is to see these “struggles” as learning (because it truly is) and be kind to yourself. I am so glad this story was relevant 😊 Social media makes everything look too perfect sometimes 💕
Thank you so very much for sharing the concerns you have about your paintings. You definitely gave me courage to push on. You are a fabulous artist, really appreciate you explaining the steps and possible pitfalls.
Stunning! I love the final piece. Are you planning to add more animal paintings to Patreon?
I can proudly say I am a subscriber! Exquisite work!
Magnifique!
Going through covid now and your soothing voice, peaceful videos, amazing talent, and inspiring patience with wc, have been really helping! Thank you ❤️🙏

I enjoy watching you paint. Every one of your paintings are beautiful! Do you have any classes for intermediate learning? Thank you for sharing your struggles.
The branch is so beautiful! Thank you! I will have to try that.
💜
You are amazing. DOT.
I LOVE the blue background behind the bird! It's a bold, eye-catching contrast. I'm puzzled that you consider it a mistake. Isn't Contrast similar to Value? I've been struggling to understand the notion of value. Would you mind explaining the difference?
Thank you❤
Your paintinga are vibrant and elegant at the same time. So much to admire in your art ❤️ absolutely love to see your artworks process.
Thank you for watching! 😊💕
So glad to see you using this paper. I bought some and wasn’t sure how I felt about it, it’s nice to see one of my favorite painters using this brand. I thought it wasn’t as good because it wasn’t as popular but I ended up really liking the result of my painting on this brand of paper!
Beautiful painting and learned so much watching you paint the background. I have messed up more than a few paintings painting in the background.
Same! Backgrounds are always tricky! 😊💜 thank you
So beautiful
❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful love this so much.
Thank you for sharing your struggles, as a beginner it makes me feel better. I've found if I get frustrated putting it away helps me too. Sometimes I just play with my watercolours for a couple of days and then go back to it.
I don't have a good name for your parrot but I can tell you it's an Australian galah. They live in the inland hotter dryer areas and are noisy and gregarious. They are also real characters, hope that helps you name it.
Thank you 💕😊
Lily would be a lovely name for this parrot.
That’s clever - I love it! 😄 thank you!
Very nice!
Canada has beautiful money! Brava!!
Oh, this video is inspiring on many levels. You are truly a force.
Thank you Arabella! I just saw your Instagram message - will definitely finish the blue background version and post tomorrow 😊💜
@@AnnaBucciarelli I saw how you didn't like the blue background in the video you made. I'm always scared to try a background with colors that might not look good, especially after putting so much time into the detail of the subject.
I had an umbrella cockatoo for many years. They are very smart and can mimic you. His name was Sabastian and he was very romantic and loved being loved on. Beautiful job on your painting. If I could paint one fourth as good as you, I would be content. I love, love, love your style of painting. Even your backgrounds are beautiful. I am a brush fanatic; so I will have to check the brushes out that you recommend. I love watching you create the consistency of the color you are using, as well as loading your brush. There is much to learn from listening and watching.
Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 I had a small green parakeet when I was a child and really really want to get a parrot for my yonger son - he always talks about birds and loves going to Botanical garden with me to look at them. I promised when he is 7 and we move to our new house I’ll get him one - maybe even a big one like this 💜 it would be so fun for me too!!!
@@AnnaBucciarelli Cockatiels are a wonderful little bird. They lower their heads down so that you can scratch their head and side of face. Sometimes when I was tired, I would take my cockatiel to bed with me and have a towel across my chest for droppings. I would fall asleep and wake up and I would have this bird right up on my chest looking at me.i never had to clip her wings. When watching TV, she would walk up and down my legs and up to my shoulder. I have a little Shih Zue now and I would be afraid she would hurt the bird. I do have an owl who is 10 years old now. I got him when he was 6 weeks old.. I am a licensed falconer and able to fly hawks, falcons and owls. I use to have 3 owls, a wild redtail hawk, and a wild falcon. I would hunt with my hawk and falcon and when it was time, I would release them back to the wild. They were not pets. I hunted as a sport. My owl...I hand raised him so that he would not attack me. Wild Owls are quite ferocious and you could be really hurt. My birds of prey have housing outside in their own facilities protected from wild life. We have 65 acres of wooded land and we have wild animals to come and "visit." My owl is a Eruasian Eagle Owl. The largest owls in the world. Their eyes are orange in color. Beautiful birds, but lazy. Ha!
Lovely painting 💞🙏🏼
Loved it ❤
Sooo beautiful🥰

Beautiful, I love your painting technique 😀 I really like to close up shoots too.
What a process! Beautiful work
Thank you!
Spectacular, as always.
Thank you Julie 😊💜
Thank you for sharing your struggles and thought processes along the way. Boy can I relate, especially with your second attempt (I did the EXACT same thing this spring, ruining an otherwise successful painting). I really love that you're still discovering new techniques and tricks with each painting. Those lilies are just wonderful. And the tips on your brushes - wow. Must order some this week!
Thank you Beth! Backgrounds are always tricky 😖 I am glad I was able to record and share the process and for sure those Chronos brushes are for sure awesome 💜

SO so beautiful 😍 thank you for sharing
Thank you Anne 😊

Amazing
Anna, your painting skills are amazing! My suggestion for the name, since the bird is a a Galah Cockatoo, "Galahlily" works I think.
Thanks for showing your process as you work through ideas. Beautiful result, as always.
Thank you Sharon 💜
Your artwork is exquisite! I marvel at your skills and technical know-how. Also, I love your second painting!

Это волшебство, очень красиво!!!!
Your work is so beautiful ❤
Thank you, Anna! I just recently tossed out a colored pencil drawing that I was half way through and just didn't like. I felt a bit guilty about it but after seeing you struggle with your ideas, I feel better! Now I'm onto a third one and am much happier! The first was a warm-up and the second, which I thought was going to be awesome, I tossed! Third time's a charm, right? This cockatoo and lily is so gorgeous! I think you should name him...after a pirate, how about, Capt. Red Hook? LOL!
I looove that! I’ll call one of them Cpt Red Hook 😊💜thank you!!!
I like the blue background. To match it, the eyes of the bird and the centers of the flowers must be made darker to echo it. I think both are good for different reasons. Don't give up on it.
Thank you! I will finish it for sure 😊
I thought your painting with the background look great too. I’m going to have to compare them side-by-side because I thought that the background painting was a winner as well!
Interesting 😊 thank you Christina 💜 I will finish the blue and post them side by side!!
Que maravilla 🤩
I actually love the blue background. Can I have it??? Lol
Pink!
I like the blue in the background. Maybe just work the areas a bit w some deeper blue near the parakeet & lily. I think it has great potential. Maybe you should look at it again now that time has passed. Thanks Agaln! SARA
Thank you Sara - you are right, I might come back to it with fresh eyes and maybe layer a bit more blue around to see if I can bring out the bird and flowers 💜
I loved them all ! And i did aspirated your honesty about your struggles. Would love to know what your thoughts are about the Fluid watercolour paper please ? Thanks .
Amazing! So so beautiful! What a talent you have ❤ Do you sell your work in originals/prints?
Beautiful cockatoo and flowers! Too bad the current coin already has a design. Maybe next year's design?
I love Escoda Reserva 1212 and 1214, but the Chronos really look interesting, and like you said, no stray hairs! These might be synthetic brushes I'd be buying. What sizes did you try and like? Would they replace or complement your existing Reserva brushes?
WOW
