    It's an e-reader not a smartphone, you should keep that in mind while reviewing it.
    I feel the haptic buttons are perfectly designed. When you are in bed reading comfortably you don't wanna move your hand around the screen to get a page turn, you just squeeze a little on the same spot you are holding the device and that's it. If the placement would have been any higher it would have killed the whole point. Also if it wasn't a little bit hard to press/squeeze then you would have to be very careful while holding the device in one hand so as to not flip the page.
    I think Amazon did indeed put a lot of thought into it and the final outcome makes perfect sense.
    Also, the new Kindle PW is also 300ppi now (it was released after you guys uploaded the video, I presume), which doesn't do a favour in justifying the cost of Voyage.

    Why are they INSISTING on saying backlight all the time. It is a FRONTLIGHT. ALL passive screens that are lit MUST use frontlights. Backlights are for transparent panels like LCD.

      +Wesley Satelis It's actually an important distinction for e-readers. Backlights cause eye-strain (which is why it strains your eyes to look at computers for a long time); frontlights, on the other hand, do not, because the light is actually projecting downward on to the screen rather than upward into your face. Hope this helps! :)

    • @MikaelMurstam
      @MikaelMurstam 9 лет назад +5

      yarrrthekraken Exactly, plus it also reflects the light from the environment at the same time which creates a light that goes better with the environment creating a lower contrast between the screen and the room which makes it easier for the eyes.

    For some reason I love watching kindle reviews... Even old ones... Even repeatedly.
    To this day... The Voyage has the most crisp screen. Except for the slight Warm to Cool color gradient... It's perfect.

    Nah guys. A page turn button on Kindles is critical. Old Kindles - you hold them with one hand and just press your thumb down to turn pages. New Kindles - you have to move your thumb, which makes you liable to drop the device, or you have to use two hands. That's why I don't want a Paperwhite.

  • @richi5831
    @richi5831 10 лет назад +7

    I personally believe there is a huge difference in screen quality but you have to see them side by side for a proper comparison. These video reviews, although helpful, do not do the Voyage justice. I tried to justify the reasons NOT to spend the extra $80, and if you have the PW2, you certainly might not need the upgrade (Just don't look at the Voyage in person) but for the extra $80, I'd rather have a sleeker, sexier device with MUCH better contrast, sharpness and lighting and know that at 300 ppi, I won't have to worry about upgrading my Kindle in the near future (Unless of course they come out with a 7'' version). So while the Kindle PW2 is "good enough" as stated in the review, go to your local Best Buy and compare them side by side and then and only then, make a proper decision.

  • @dreadjavapirate

    I started with a Kindle 2, so for me getting the Voyage is a huge upgrade. Here's what I like about the Voyage; well built with a glass screen and metal housing, highest contrast of all kindles, page buttons. And all kindles seem to be upgraded with the new Bookerly font, even my old Kindle 2. So why not get the best?

    I still use my Kindle 3. No touch screen so I don't have to worry about accidentally highlighting text or anything like that, and it has those big easy to reach clicky buttons for page-turning.
    I'm seriously still waiting for Amazon to release a new higher-DPI front-lit Kindle with some physical buttons and a switch to disable the touchscreen. Until that happens, I'm going to stick with the 3.

      If I wanted to read manga I would probably want a bigger screen for it. Higher ppi doesnt really help if the text is too small to read.

    • @MagicalWingLT
      @MagicalWingLT 10 лет назад

      Artūrs Kašs Reading Manga on the Paperwhite 2 is perfect. The text isn't small at all and is actually the same size as a regular Paperback Manga novel. Trust me I been testing it for the past 3 weeks when I got my new Paperwhite 2. It also has panel view option which works well. But most of the time I don't need to use this feature. I buy my manga from the Kindle Store and also upload my own.

    Just broke my kindle voyage, had it in my coat pocket and somehow cracked the dynamic glass touch screen. The crack did not involve the reading area, but the controls were all gone, I could only turn it off and on with button on the back(unlike my iphone screen which still works normally with a crack across it). I didn't have a replacement plan, so I bought a new dynamic screen (only 19.99 on ebay) and followed a disassembly video, having successfully replaced a cracked laptop screen before. Turns out the dynamic touch glass is adhered to the lcd screen underneath. No way to remove without destroying the lcd, which I did. $200 toasted. Go with another kindle, avoid the thin dynamic glass (probably 1 mm thick tops and easily cracked) or get a really sturdy cover and a replacement plan. I learned that the "voyage " is misnamed and not sturdy enough to travel with.

    I have a fist gen paperwhite and now the Voyage. I liked the PW fine but ended up maxing the 1.25gb usable memory, had planned on getting another and upgraded to the Voyage.
    One thing that my first gen doesn't do but the Voyage does is landscape view (disables the buttons btw), may seem odd to some but it gives you more edge to hang on to if you have fat fingers or just want a better grip without covering text...

    Do we really need 300 ppi (our recognition drops off at 240~260 ppi) for reading books? We wouldn't be able to tell with actual writing, and would we need to spend hundreds of dollars more for a infinitesimally smaller amount of aliasing?

    Why is it necessary to turn the brightness UP in already well-lit environments? Wouldn't you want it to just behave like a normal book with the brightness turned all the way down? Won't it work well like that? Or it does, but the self-light adds to the experience?

    • @thefinder8087
      @thefinder8087 8 лет назад

      Because it's not paper, it's a display with a back light and glass in front of it. The brighter the light in the room the more reflection on the display, drowning out the contrast of the black letters making them harder to see. On a book it's just ink on a page, nothing reflective in front of the page.

    • @firsh
      @firsh 8 лет назад

      Thank you that's interesting. Is the light so good that it makes the reading experience better despite that old models didn't have glass in front of the screen and could be illuminated better by the sun or a lamp? Wouldn't this make PW3 better in terms of externally illuminated reading, because there is no glass as the screen is not flush with the frame? On old kindles that weren't illuminated, was it better to read or worse? Purely speaking of the light experience and contrast.

    • @Moerkbak
      @Moerkbak 8 лет назад

      nope, its not backlit - the light is illumitating a plate infront of the display.

    Soo do i get the voyage as my first kindle or the paperwithe? The price difference is big enough to be a deciding factor, but not that big to be a no brainer. So is it worth it for a first pick up?
    All i got from this video was it isn't worth upgrading. But not if it's a better first pick.
    I'm considering getting one for a few month's now but now I'm even more confused which to get...

    • @TwoPlusTwoEqualsFive32
      @TwoPlusTwoEqualsFive32 10 лет назад

      Depends what you are doing with it, and how rich you are. if you have the money to throw away, go the voyage. It is essentially exactly what the paperwhite is, just with some added features.
      If you are just reading books, and not manga or comics and price is a concern go the paperwhite. I've had mine for over a year now and it has never failed me.
      Also just a note, don't buy the ad supported version, the ads are annoying as hell often advertising books I am uninterested in like twilight and womens love romances. The extra $20 is worth it for the unlocked version.

And it didn't come with the Special Offers either which was a added bonus. Comparing this to the Kindle Voyage? At $200.00 it's not worth it when it doesn't have major upgrades from the Paperwhite 2.

      If you like how the touch works, the paperwhite will be a nice upgrade from that. The first Kindle I bought was the 3rd generation. The one I currently own is the paperwhite (6th generation). What I miss from the old one is that I could hold it in either hand. I was putting off buying one hoping they would add that feature back. I switch between both hands when reading. So when they removed that feature, I was disappointed even though they added a much needed light. If I hadn't broken my 1st kindle, I wouldn't have upgraded. Now that they added it back, I am seriously considering upgrading. I just wish they gave you an option for white or black like they did with the current paperwhite.

    Be nice to know how it works on PDF content. Technical people read a lot of PDF documents. Since the Kindle does not format PDF content, the entire printed page size is rendered on the kindle screen which is not adequately visible on the paperweight due to its reduced size screen. The Kindle DX addressed this but never lived up to its promise of a text book replacement. I was interested in knowing if the 300 dpi of the Voyage makes the Kindle a practical PDF reader.

      I have a Kindle 5 and I upgraded to the Voyage because 1. it also has the page turn (not really a button on the Voyage) and 2. it was $10 including origami case at the local thrift store. Apparently they sell all Kindles for $10 regardless of the version. I use my Kindle 5 for everyday use in and out of the house. I keep it in my purse when I am not using it or charging it. I use the Voyage for night time reading and keep it by my bed. I miss the text to speech my Kindle Keyboard had but am able to follow along using Alexa or text to speech on my cheap Kindle Fire 5th Gen. I also have a Fire Phone that I purchased to replace my iPod. Alexa does not work on the Fire Phone. I do not have the advantage of whisper sync while I am reading but if I lose my place I can sync them during a break.

    Will grousing about the Voyage not being waterproof is interesting... How often do folks read in the tub / pool? I never have with traditional books/magazines and haven't been tempted with emedia. Just curious how real this need was for others.
    e-ink has come a long way in the past few years but I agree with one poster, its unfortunate that this type of display has to clear by inverting between pages. Even though it's now quite subtle, it's still a bit distracting.
    Also... I thought the text on screen at 8:37 (center screen) and a few other instances after was pretty funny (I know, I'm being childish). I can imagine the editors going over this and thinking "Oh crap. Did you see that? Ah, screw it, nobody will notice." ;)

    This is one of those situations where, in their attempt to please everybody, they end up pleasing nobody. The people who like touch don't like the raised haptic line on the side, and the button people don't like the placement, size or response of the haptic line.
    I'd choose a second gen over this one, even if they were priced the same.

    • @ryderov0
      @ryderov0 10 лет назад

      ***** I obviously haven't used the Voyage, thus my watching this video. If I had, I wouldn't be seeking out videos on the topic.
      If they're flush and can be turned off, then I guess they aren't a problem. As for the screen PPI, they quite clearly pointed out that the difference is only visible at the smallest font. I can't imagine very many people read at that font size.
      I don't know how you could possibly know most people's opinions about the button placement. I guess I'll just have faith that you took a poll.
      The main selling points for people who don't care about the buttons would be weight and thinness.
      As for my being an "angry paperwhite user", I'm curious as to what of anything I've said implies anger. Apparently someone can't be constructively critical of something without being "angry". If anyone has a negative temperament here, it's obviously you, being hyper-defensive of the Voyage. Even if the points are correct, "it's not what you said, it's how you say it."

      ***** Hoping not to come off as ostentatious, I assure you I am in no way jealous of any Kindle user. I can certainly buy any model they offer if I want it.
      After reading some more reviews, it has come up that many people notice a bluish hue on one half of the screen. That would be my only concern with the Voyage. If they fixed that in a subsequent revision, then I would certainly pick up the Voyage if I needed a new Kindle.

      Because one of the whole reasons to get an ereader is that it looks just like paper, with the higher resolution and contrast it does look more like paper. The other two with lower contrast and resolution look like paper where the text is slightly faded and not as sharp as text in a book while the voyage looks great. Also on the other two, black parts of he screen look blu-ish with the light on while the kindle voyage, the light not being perfect, excels at keeping it black so the whites are whiter and the blacks are blacker for an overall experience that looks more like a book page than anything else out there besides a book page

    The designers obviously do not read, or they do not read enough. They are upgrading totally unrelevant aspects, and leaving biggest drawbacks untouched. This device should disappear when you start reading a book, and doing so with new buttons, shiny-screaming logo, and glossy black bezel is impossible. I own a Paperwhite and spend too much time cleaning dust motes from the bezel, and covering Kindle logo with my thumb. Grey unlit Kindle Touch is still the best Kindle ever made.

      Isn't that a weird feeling? I have a Kindle 3! It works GREAT and has no signs of slowing, nor do I feel the need to upgrade. I feel like it could easily last a dozen years. But they put out a new design with new features every year. I'm sure it's nice to have more resolution and the backlight and the zippy page turns.... but I can't justify spending that dough.

    • @chaosdeus1
      @chaosdeus1 10 лет назад

      e-ink screen it's just a screen and can be implement on any device !!!
      And for me it must be on Android OS when I will be able to install the apps that I need.
      And amazon e-readers are useless piece of shit as well as kindle, kobo and nook.

    • @chris-cu2vi

      ***** Notice how the screen has flash black when the page refreshes or changes? It has to do that whenever something on the screen changes so that the liquid from the last page you were on goes away. You cant have apps that constantly change color or have any moving images, which cuts out most apps from the app store, and basically every game. Everything would have to be in greyscale too. Its meant for reading, thats why its called a reader. Amazon only offers non animated games like board games.

    • @x111-c4f
