Colorism predates racism. That caste system was everywhere and still is everywhere.
Right ✅️ I am surprised colorism didn't come up when Isabel was in India also
MY first thought leaving was I really wanted a 10 episode limited series of this content/story. Maybe they can still do it someday.
I could see that, but the feature structure works perfectly 👌 even small characters served their purpose and nothing seemed rushed, but I see the point
I ruined my makeup watching this last week at the LA screening, so good
I think the plumber scene spoke to the caste system in a nuanced way. 1. Although he is a plumber and she is the homeowner - he feels superior; 2. he doesn't "want" to interact with her; 3. altho they share human experiences- death and loss - and even inhumaness (he mentions his father was unkind) they are still unable to connect.
Yes, and it's her getting him to talk about these common human experiences that finally gets him to recognize her humanity--at least long enough to fix her damn pipes.
Maybe I missed something. It wasn't really clear to me that he felt superior. He was there to do a job. Regardless of his politics, he should have realized how off-putting his MAGA had would be to some people. But if he really had issues with her being a Black woman, he could have left. And if she really had issues with his MAGA hat, she could have shown him the door and hired someone else. Instead, she attempted to connect with him rather than be uncomfortable and it appeared to work. At least that's how I saw it.
@funnyguyla great perspective, and I agree. However, I was speaking in reference to the caste system.
@@funnyguyla The thing is, when he got there, he barely talks to her at first, and sort of ignores her concerns, refusing to even examine her pipes and just rushed straight to giving her an estimate. It was clear he was giving her bare-minimum service so he could get out of there quickly. Only after she makes the effort to connect with him does he give her problem his actual attention. While that scene wouldn't have seemed to explicitly relate to caste or him feeling superior to her, the MAGA hat implies it.
They did connect. Because of her efforts to humanize herself to him, and his own capacity for humanity. The MAGA hat was funny though. As if all Trump fans are racist. Stereotypes are universal.
I like your review of the movie - I saw it yesterday and read the book last year. I’ve looked at a couple of reviews and the scene with Nick Offerman wearing the MAGA cap seems to have not been very effective for some, but for me, it was extremely effective. My interpretation was that people waste so much time assuming that we are different when in reality we’re all sharing the human experience. In that moment, Ms. Wilkerson used her intellect to break down that barrier by asking the plumber about his personal life. After that, he was more willing to do the job fairly.
He was forced to see humanity in her...and in return she saw humanity in him. Thats what I got from that scene.
It was short scene but very impactful.
I met Isabel Wilkerson! She gave a talk at Harvard, and I had a chance to chat at length with her after her talk. She is one of the most brilliant people I've ever met, and I still remember that conversation to this day. (This was before she had published "Caste," back when she was developing the ideas for the book.)
Ambedkar is actually the name of the lecture series at Harvard that hosted Isabel Wilkerson.
“What I wanted was 5 hours of episodes with nothing but receipts”😂😂😂😂
It's that subtle, soft "bye" that gets me every time at the end, Joseph!
So glad I saw your channel! I hadn't heard of the book or this movie before, but love the idea of a film about race that goes beyond just slavery in America. Wish more people could see the common threads between slavery, Holocaust, and other racist tragedies, instead of just fighting about which is the "worst."
Stop complaining and thinking any of those are the worst in history you people need to read about world history
@@The_king567 "And other racist tragedies"
@@000zamaru literally nobody cares about them for a reason
@@The_king567 You are missing the point of this person's comment. And if you don't think American chattel slavery and the Holocaust don't rank among the worst tragedies in world history, you must not know much about either. Yes, there have been horrific events all over the world, and slavery and the Holocaust are two of them. And perhaps people will stop "complaining" about them when they stop effecting the lives of modern-day people.
You guys are tough! 5 stars for Ms Ava. Origin is a masterpiece!
This movie is stunning. I loved the research aspect. Loved everything about it. The theme song "I am" is also epic.
I saw this movie tonight (Alone) based on a trailer I saw on PBS but knew nothing else about the subject. My eyes are puffy
I’m an old man…seen lots of rotten stuff in this world. Wish I was optimistic… are things as bad as they were when I was young…yes…just different as bad.
I wholeheartedly agree. I needed more! This would’ve been a great docuseries. Nevertheless, the message was clear and moving. This needed to be made. ❤
Story oozes with the author's immersive experiences - yet she finds the linkage through different cultures on the racism topic! So, simple, yet effective the idea behind the name! Names like *Sir* and *Prince* and *Queen!* Respect, what the movie's all about and your views make it worth the effort to watch it!
I think it’s really good that the film feels like a 100 or 101 course to the deeper issue of the caste system and racism. It needs to be at somewhat of a base level so that it can be digested by more people, but prompting them to go learn and research more. Can’t have a 10 hour film breaking it all down. No one would go see it and so much would be lost from anyone outside of a scholar that focuses on this subject matter. I think it was done perfectly and it definitely is sparking ALOT of conversation which was the point.
I thought you guys were reviewing a documentary, and the Nick says "Jon Bernthal" and I was like *what?* 😆
obsequious? Nick got me looking up new words...
Nick vocab is on point lol. Always looking up the words he uses lol
How to travel to another state to see this movie with my husband, we are in an interracial relationship, but we still had a lot to say about how we felt about the movie. The one scene that was hardest for him to watch was a Trayvon Martin scene he had to get up a season to go to the restroom, the hardest part for me to watch was with the little boy at the pool. This movie was very hard to digest, but still recommend.
I have read many times we are spirits having experiences in earthly bodies. We have the abilities to rise above our earthly animal instincts that the human body comes programmed with. All species of animals without intervention are territorial and destroy competition for their territory (exception is the cappybara). When the spirit over rides the temptation of animal instinct to forgive, to make peace, to care, to love. Free random acts of kindness and free senseless acts of beauty elevates humanity.
I found this movie on accident, browsing on Alamo's showtimes. As a writer, I am captivated by the narrative of this movie. Really enjoyed your review and can't wait to see more of this channel.
Great review. I think 3.5 out of 5 is too low but loved your reasoning. I thought the plumber scene felt uncomfortable because I have lived a similar scene. I am a visual person and thought it was beautifully filmed.
Im here because of Stan Walkers' brilliant song 'I Am' and video as the sound track of Origin. My favourite song of the year.
Not sure about film but Stan Walker’s epic song will change you - in a positive way.
I just streamed this movie earlier today. Yesterday I watched "The Zone of Interest." This movie broke my heart and filled it up...while "The Zone of Interest " left me cold and disturbed.
I wish "Origin" received some loved from the Academy because I believed its THAT good❤
I agree with Joseph...I need a 5 part docuseries on the subject of caste. Perhaps on HBO or Netflix.
Guys my heart just breaks all over the place thinking about your review. Bravo guys. I couldn't watch or read this book at least at this time. Truth is so heartbreaking. Still reeling over Israel's tragedy. Love you guys. Truly respect your work, and your personalities are chef's kiss❤❤❤
Very good discussion! I thought it was interesting that this vid is created by 2 men who I am assuming have different cultural backgrounds. I would’ve liked to have heard more about each of your varying perspectives on this film just based on your own personal upbringings in the US. Thank you each for a very powerful and insightful discussion!
This sounds so fascinating. I'm definitely interested in reading/watching this. I really enjoy factual organized arguments like Joseph wanted but I also love artistic introspective emotional presentations like The Thin Red Line, for instance, when executed well. This sounds like a mix. Raw truthful stories told by actors and storytellers.
From the sound of it I wonder if it's anything like "For Colored Girls". Amazing film I randomly picked up at the library ten years ago and it's one of those movies that changes you. I think Joseph may have seen it due to it starring the lovely Miss Jackson and Nick due to it's creative merit and his proximity to Joseph.
Incredible movie and the dvd included a short documentary about the slam poetry movement and the artist that inspired the stories in the movie. She is brave as hell. For the dvd you get the best of both. The political perspective and artistic expression.
(If you haven't seen For Colored Girls, please do, it's amazing - Short warning there is some traumatic subject material but IMO worth it.)
Great and gorgeous actress Aunjanue Ellis! I will never forget seeing her first in the movie Girls Town released when I was age 12 going on 13, still one of my favorite movies!
Thank you for sharing your movie review but I will have spend a weekend to prepare myself to watch this deep movie about my Black American culture. 07dec23
Great review- not sure if I’ll see it, but I loved your discussion of it. I just need to find the right person to see it with.
You did such a great job of breaking down this movie (thank you)... I was trying to figure out what it was about after seeing the trailer during a movie screening last night. I knew of the book "Caste", but I wasn't sure how that nonfiction work would be turned into a movie. I think I might wait to see this after I actually read the book, but I definitely want to see the film as well thanks to your review.
Thank you two! Awesome platform and flowers are rightly given to Ms. Ava Duvernay.
Im excited to see this will definitely read the book before
I’m reading 📖 it now, and omg it’s so good. I’ve actually cried a couple times already reading it
What a fantastic review- I really appreciate your view points and the ways you verbalize them! Thank you & I look forward to watching the film!
Stan Walker's song was also inspired by this film and is also the soundtrack ❤ That's why I am here- following the movie and the review really makes the song make sense as it has snippets for this film.
This Duvernay movie is so powerful, Hollywood could not handle it last year. But what a year can make and in this Kamala Harris era, I believe the film should be reissued or revisited. The movie had a budget of $40 million, but only grossed $3million last year. What a difference a year can make. Origin needs to be revisited.
This movie looks and sounds interesting. However I will read the book before even watching the film.
*Great review! Love, love, love the good💞Soror🐘AunjanueEllisTaylor!* 🎬
Can’t wait to watch
Miss Hale..A number of black people were and are named Miss, Mister, Queen, etc, which the movie points out is a loophole to caste.
Seeing this next week
I just saw it yesterday and it was so good.
This review even makes me tear up
I saw this movie as part of the AMC screen unseen preview where you don't know what movie you will be watching. I loved this movie. I only thing I had watched by Ava DuVernay was A Wrinkle in Time and I had vowed not to watch anything by her again. If this movie is what her other work is like rather than "A Wrinkle in Time" then I am going to have to check out her previous work. When the movie started I thought it was a horror movie. In a way it sorta was.
Nick and Joseph, when are you guys going to do a full review of The Zone of Interest!?! I have been longing to hear your full on review ever since the Cannes Film Festival...
Today
I finally subscribed!! keep up the great work

This movie sounds very intriguing and I can’t wait to see it! Thx!
King Richard she was good. She was good in the help also in the man of honor. Also in the movie where she took this baby from the hospital but it was based on a true story n keke plamer plays in it. But as stated this lady is a outstanding actress.
Dr. Ambedkar died in the year 1956 so how can he become inspired by the speech/article of Dr. ML king Jr which was published in 1956?
Great review.. my first from you all.. however surprised you both landed at 3.5.. ?
Fun fact: Mr. T chose that as his showbiz name for the same reason--so that people would be forced to address him as "Mr." and give him that respect.
Anyway, I thought the movie was phenomenal. My only reservation was in how she talked about Jewish people being white, without delving into the fact that Judaism is an ethno-religion. This, I think, is the comment that earned Whoopie Goldberg a fair amount of backlash on the View. But it does drive home the idea that even though many Jewish people appeared indistinguishable from other Germans, the Nazis were able to successfully categorize them as a separate race and put them in a lower caste in people's minds, thus dehumanizing them. Would be interesting to hear Wilkerson speak on the current state of affairs in Gaza and how it plays into her thesis.
Interesting review. I read the book and will see this movie.
Great video! 🎉
Good job guys keep up the good work.
Main star of the movie she such a talented actress love her work..❤❤❤❤❤❤..
Also, thank you all for reviewing it! This is a small budget film that will not have millions of dollars promoting it and so we have to do our job with pushing it out. This is a tense time in this country and the world right now. This film is such an amazing conversation piece that relates so much is what we are seeing today. When we have a person running tor president with 91 felony counts and advocating for authoritarianism, I think we need to have some deeper conversation about race and the unfair practices and treatment that come out of a caste system.
Stan Walkers song ❤
Great song by a great singer for a great movie …and they didn’t even mention it 😏
I really hope he gets an Oscar
@@maremare3205 yeah me too and if he doesn’t they’re probably as racist as the new right wing govt
Great review!.. heard about the movie from native land pod cast in surprise movie didnt get an oscar nomination.. if more is needed, i hope netflix takes that on!
good review
I tried to read the book prior to seeing the movie but got through 3 chapters and felt like I got the point. Then I saw the movie and thought it was hard to watch but brilliant. I am almost afraid to read that rest of the book…😮
A Wrinkle in Time was the worst step she could’ve taken. Hope Origin actually brings Ava to the expectation everyone usually has of her
Janet Cooke was famously the first African American woman to win Pulitzer in journalism in 1981.
For a movie to purport to be about truth, striking they make this false claim.
Umm, didn't she returned the pulitzer after admitting she fabricated the story? 🤔
I caught a cold and now my copd is really having issues. I still don't feel I did anything wrong guys. Guess I'm just confused more than anything. Whether we agree or not, I'm glad I texted where I was coming from. End of story.
U myst be a huge janet Jackson fan like myself. I want your shirt. ❤❤❤❤ ms Jackson if u r nasty
Thanks!
Thank you!
Where u getting these shirts from please.
I think I bought this from Old Navy years ago.
@@fishjellyfilmreviews ok thanks
There is no comparison 400 years let me say that again 400 years that’s right, there is no comparison. Slavery was far more atrocious and horrible 400 years. And those same people were a part of slavery. They provided the ships in our area sailing back-and-forth to Africa.
Have you heard of the Arab slave trade? It's still happening today. ruclips.net/video/j074BzeWofg/видео.htmlsi=i97gaE-fCGQTFvO0
Ava is better at documentaries than narrative films imo. i wish she would do more docs instead.
are you going to review the boy and the heron?
Yes
@@fishjellyfilmreviews ok
@fishjellyfilmreviews its a beautiful movie (:
@fishjellyfilmreviews very thoughtful review gentlemen. My wife and I watched it yesterday and I thought it was very well done. I've ordered Caste and my wife bought Deep South. We've got some reading ahead of us.
Thanks for the video. I do have a minor critique. Your body positions give me a feeling like you don't want to be there next to each other. It may be just me but if you turned your shoulders in, it would make it slightly warmer.
🎉🏆💯
We were suffering this torture we were freed from him by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Thank You Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar #Jai Bhim💙
Miss Hale.
Is 3.5 out of 5 good?
Guys why did you take my comment off? It wasn't offensive. He misunderstood where I was coming from, and I felt I needed to explain.
I have heard that Isabel being in an interraciao relationship taints the story. How do you guys think it relates to the movie? I am assuming it is a true thing for her in real life…
Not Nick Offerman in a MAGA hat 🥲
Your review is better than this movie & you did it in 24 mins. Half of the audience walked out. Film was more a lecture than a movie, this wasn't good storytelling, & so grainy, 16mm looked like super 8, thought the cinematography was just awful.
🥴
Should listen to the song for this movie. I AM by Stan Walker. Thank me later ❤😂
Great film
