I would like to see someone run solo D&D (or perhaps a more streamlined equivalent like Five leagues from the borderlands) alongside solo wargaming / rank & file. This would be all tied together on a campaign map where kingdoms had resources (from taxes and resource sites ), and each turn would deal with kingdom management and the various engagements that would occur. Perhaps the major settlements would act as magnets for adventurers and you would pick from the people that showed up to form adventuring parties. The skirmishes and dungeon delves would give magic items with skirmish AND battlefield effects, and deal with objectives that also affected the kingdom level play, such as freeing hostages, gaining a regiment of allies and so on and so forth. Now that I think of it, it kinda sounds like that old game Birthright, which also had an early computer game adaptation.
That's my dream too. I've started this by doing the same as the first video in the series but I have no RPG experience and only own the DMG. This is probably going to be the background for WFB 3rd edition games with some roleplaying thrown in. Chicacgowiz's games blog was doing something like this back in 2015. You'll have to Google it, any time I post anything that looks vaguely like a link here the post is deleted. Search for "MY HOLY GRAIL FOUND - MIXING MASS COMBAT D&D WITH RPG D&D" should bring it up.
Just randomly stumbled across your channel and these videos. Digging it brother, feels like I'm hanging out with an old bud. Enjoying binging this playlist and can't wait to see how this all turns out
I’m so glad the eye is doing so much better. Four months’ recovery is so much better than the alternative. I hope you can get back to all your painting and other fun activities soon, brother! You are colonizers!?!?? LOL. Say it proudly! “What you’re doing is just rolling some dice and interpreting the results” My wife would call that playing D&D, so it’s probably best if I did also. It’s a good justification for not spending all that time together anyway. lol By the way … Guys, wish me luck this morning. I go into surgery at 10am (CDT) for leg tendon repairs. Second attempt actually. Fingers crossed. I don’t know why I’m so nervous this time around. I just ask for a teeny tiny short prayer, if you can spare the time. Thanks.
Not sure if a guard dog is a war dog. Maybe. But to me, a guard dog protects and might not be up for entering a dungeon to fight. There's really no good explanation I could find in the books. 🤷
Perhaps because the guard dog is mainly for defensive skills, while a war dog is trained for more offensive purposes. And war dogs work better when used in pairs or larger teams. I’m going mainly by the documentation of war dogs, as used by Spanish Conquistadores.
Not to mention that historically many breeds of dogs used as guard dogs are bred to be scary-looking but are not actually suited for "war" or combat purposes. Dobermans and Mastiffs are very rarely seen in competitive "bitesports" compared to Rottweilers and shepherd breeds. The "prey drive" and "resource guarding" are different behaviours. Sometimes you want something that is big and loud and looks scary but isn't actually dangerous for the handler or his family
I remember running into the same issue with hirelings and henchies when I was learning Basic Fantasy (BX clone) last year. There, retainers (i.e. henchman) must be half the PC level or less, so cannot be had by L1 characters. While mercenary troops are generally hired as whole squads or platoons, and at any rate, don't go into the dungeon. Around the same time, you were putting out videos on using henchmen, and I was thinking, that's great, but I can't use them at all right now, RAW.
If you're running this in 1:1 time and the original party is gonna take a long time to come back, you could just roll up a new party. Especially since the original party is gonna need downtime to recover and such after each delve
I have the revised (2011) AD&D manual, (thanks Scribd) after buying a 2nd ed produced in ‘95. All of the lovely charts you’ve spoken about are gone from the ‘95 ed. In the 2011 version henchmen et al are on page 69 through to 78. I can’t take henchmen til I’m lvl4.
Not sure why wizard and thief is the worst grouping. They are both interesting by themselves and they have some synergy. Putting hirelings in front of them is, at least for low levels, more attractive than using PC melee types, because 1) you’re not splitting that valuable early XP and b) you don’t have to wait for someone to roll up a new guy when one of the meat shields gets eaten by an owlbear. If I were to insist on the worst possible 1d4+1 member 1st level party, I would assign you five monks, who are pretty useless until mid levels.
Hey JOW! I was ALWAYS fond of the name, "Fluffy", for the biggest, meanest, battle scarred, ill tempered, killing machine of a dog that I could come across! Sergeant At Arms "Medium" Dave Osbourne was a recurring Henchman as well! Seems like the plan is to raid the near by mountains in an effort to gain some disposable income before launching the cross lake exotic wood/lumber operation. With a couple of successful expeditions under their belts... then operations can expand into a wider sphere of possibilities!
“They’re locals and they don’t serve tourists”??? Well, isn’t that special! I guess they must have something against the color of their money? Lol Dog names? Conquistador war dog names, here are the three most famous ones: - Bruto (Brutus) - Becerrillo (little bull) - Leon (lion)
What I used to do for PCs who didn't make the upkeep cut is roll for equipment breakage. But after a while I stopped doing this because being that poor despite adventuring seemed punishment enough lol... But they did lose some henchmen when they decided to stop paying them, and subsequently died.
You said that this is where people run if they are in trouble so many there will be a person looking to make a gold coin for a few days of service. Or there may be a farm hand or other person who is looking to change their lives and would like to adventure for a gold coin. Finding only one person should not be hard. And I am sure there is a rusty old sword sitting in some barn that the farm hand could use
Reading though your X (Twitter) account and you wanting to play this in a 1:1 time scale you should totally of made each hex no more then 8 miles. With hex's being larger then that you will be traveling multiple real life days before you can get to a destination. A person will generally travel about 8 miles a day by foot or maybe a bit more by cart. Any more and you will lose a lot of endurance. If you have pack animals and no carts make it about 20 miles but then you need to be able to water and graze them and if you push them to hard they should have a chance of dying. Also Demi Humans will most likely target them as they are large and they will provide their tribe with the most meat so your animals are at huge risk.
As for character upkeep if you don't have the 100GP for a good life you pay what you have for the month so 50 for common, 10 for poor, 5 for meager, and 2 for self-sufficient. These will then effect rolls such as your ability to hire underlings, get jobs do to your social status, and if your sick from starvation and such. If you didn't figure this out.
@@Rannos22 I'm in a 1:1 game right now and that is the way my GM is playing it so how is that a misunderstanding. 1:1 means 1 to 1 how else could you define it?
You can travel as many days into the future as you need or want during the session (or video in this case) but youll be in "time jail" until the irl calender catches up So if the party takes a week to go to the dungeon and come back and the next video he wants to do is tomorrow, Jon will just have to roll up a new party while he waits for the irl calender to catch up with the original party Edit: also I'm now realizing I read something in your post that wasnt actually in there somehow so what i said might be irrelevant
Just re-reading through the book, another thing of note for possible future reference that you could implement, would be p.173 mention under 'Random Wilderness Terrain'. States that the random terrain "can be utilized with relative ease for a 1 space=1 mile.....scale". meaning you COULD check for inhabitation every square mile of your 24 mile hex? is that right? that might bring about more places on your future hexes. cheers
Addendum: been messing around with Hex Maps, finding 1space=5 miles scale is working best for me. Was rolling to many inhabited spots with the 1=1 ratio. But thats just me.
Some of the rule questions to be figured out are a matter of figuring what sort of sense the campaign you intent to run will result in. For example, take mercenaries. Are they just sellswords, with no loyalties except the terms of their contract and gold? Or are they liable to become loyal soldiers of Joe Fighter, pending good treatment and care? Both can work, just needs to be firmly established in how you go from sellswords to soldiers. No new school arbitrariness.
It looks like Hawaiian Electric also gets a share of the blame for not cutting back the overgrowth around their power lines like they are supposed to, especially that gully area shown on the news a few times now. 😕
Showed up for Henchmen & Hirelings, got an local expert lesson on Hawaiian agriculture. 10/10, you never know what you might get on this channel!

@@IgnoramusWithoutNumbers Thanks so much. The pain relief was almost instant.
The ability of a sergeant to lead is a function of him being a fighter. The ability to NOT earn XP is a function of being a hireling.
Finished video and all I heard was Oriental Adventures and Harlot table.
Oh and that you missed your opp to name doggo Brodog.
Good stuff mate.
