I've put Odoban air freshener in my homemade starch. It worked well. I doesn't take much because it is a concentrate. I've found that I really don't need a fragrance and no longer add it to homemade starch.
You were awesome. I liked your pace, your recommendation of the better bottle and your demonstration. Thank you so much. My wife buys two bottles of Niagara starch per week. Eight cans per month. It's way too costly. We used Argo when we married but every store removed it and forced everyone to purchase can starch. The thing about can starch is it is one strength and that is usually light. Too light. Can't even tell. Your video was wonderful. Thank you so very much. You made me happy and my day .... Cornel Dunmore
Just to add to your wonderful recipe to save a few $$$ and besides I'm sure that many of you have already found that there are wonderful misting bottles available for free when you recycle a couple of name brand cleaning products...Mr Clean and Dawn Powerwash and if you use the one in the beautiful blue bottles it can make for a really pretty addition to our quilt rooms.
I was using this method, but wanted to try sta - flo from Walmart and just liked it better I use it in my mister bottle also ,It makes the fabric stiff also if you use less water,,plus its a large container that lasts along time and I dont have to boil anything,,I just found I liked it better and around 4 dallors, its not so expensive. But try both like I did to see what you like.
Self taught I got the liquid sta-flo from Walmart. I mix half 50/50 water/starch. It's pretty yukkyy on darker colors especially black and navy. It leaves a cloudy looking mess. It's definitely a quilt that needs to be washed before gifting. I was checking out best press but it's so expensive.
Walmart also sales the very reasonable pricing Magic Sizing that has been rebranded and relabeled and also remarketed in quilting businesses. I've been using it for years.
I have heard of using the sta-flo but haven’t tried it. I will say if I don’t boil this mixture long enough (I’m not great with patience) it can leave a dusty residue on darker fabrics, but it washes right out.
I also do 50/50 Sta-Flo to filtered (from the refrigerator) tap water. I put it in a misting bottle from MSQC but I’ve seen them on sale at other online quilting sites. I get similar results to distilled water at a significantly lower cost.
Good to know about the cornstarch method! Easy and inexpensive. I've seen the recipes for using vodka, but I just don't want to buy a bottle to use a small amount. It'd make more sense to just get the spray starch.
I'm a brand new subscriber and what a great first video ! Back in the day I made my own clothing starch to soak all our jeans in. When I got through, they could stand up by themselves, no kidding. We were a big a rodeo family, so starched jeans with creases was a must. Lol I made my starch with a liquid starch that was in a blue jug type container. I've gotta investigate and see if all that was was cornstarch. 🤔. Great video ! 🌺 Update: just seen another reply that had the name of what I used, Stay Flo liquid starch. 😁
I may need to give that a try then! While this mixture is low cost I do get tired of boiling it since I am not a big kitchen fan 😂 I like easy peasy and cheap which isn’t an easy combo.
@@sewbeitquilts yes because I used about 6 drops of a strong scented oil. I love the Orleans brand Southern Magnolia. It hasn’t stained or left any type of residue on my fabrics.
I'm team Vodka :) with a tiny bit of essential oil -- anything but lavender. I find the cornflour clumps too much for me, heating it with more water may solve that. Thanks Fallon, have a great day :)
Thanks for this Fallon. I used to use Best Press or flatter. I don’t know what corn starch is! As for vodka, I don’t have any anyway! I know my dad would’ve said, what a waste of good Vodka! I’ve actually never had a problem with fabrics being too soft. I only use best press or flatter at the end anyway😍 ❤️🇦🇺
Not sure if you know the answer to this but what if you don't plan to wash the quilt? I know that other DIY products using corn starch end up with insect infestations if they are "stored" for long periods of time. Thanks!
All corn is hybridized man made and GMO, even when it says on the label non GMO, your skin will soak up GMOs in your pours when you sweat, id highly suggests making starch in a pot with organic red skinned potatoes peeled
Thank you for this recipe, but will the starch rot with water over time? Or does boiling it with water prevent it from rotting? Because one time I mixed starch with water without boiling it, and it rotted after several days.
Yes, I have made the same mixture you make but found that it really stuck to and burnt on my iron. I see that wait for it to dry, "at little bit". What is a little bit?
@sewbeitquilts I don't think I did long enough it won't even come thru my mister bottle I have the one bottle that you have in video that jus must my mixture is cloudy still ugh should I try it again
Do you have to keep this in the Refrigerator because it is corn base and how long do you cook it for i'm trying this method because I cannot fine the liquid storage anywhere in my area which is frustrating thsnk you
I don’t keep it in the refrigerator. It can spoil so if you are worried about that using distilled water helps and small batches if you don’t go through the starch quickly like I do. I boil until the water looks clear again. If the mixture is too thick to spray you can add more water to the bottle and shake really well. Some of the sprayers don’t work as well with thick mixtures of starch.
Is this heavy enough to give my jean jacket and jeans that new stiff feeling, I can't stand the way my clothes are all limp after the first couple washings and not really sure they spray cans are stiff enough for my liking. I want them to be able to get up and walk out of the room on their own...lol
There are recipes to make your own. One uses flour and rubbing alcohol or vodka and another I came across used Elmer’s glue. I plan to try both to see if either will work. I agree, the 505 is really expensive for how much you have to use on each quilt.
@stephensonbenita. I’ve used hairspray. Just a light spraying. It worked well albeit it was on a smaller quilt. It didn’t gum up my needle. I sprayed basted it then quilted it straight away so I can’t say how long it would remain adhered if left for a few days before quilting. It’s worth a try😊
@@sewbeitquilts not a fan of wanting to use the flour method.. Just cant see spraying food on my projects.. Just me though.. I am gonna try the Elmer's glue one though.. Im thinking with alcohol verses water

Great idea! Very true. I use reusable cleaning bottles mainly so I don’t have many that can be reused.
I've never starched my fabrics, but I want to try your recipe. Thank you!
You're welcome!
And I want to thank you for this video too
Thank you!!! Best Press here in 🇨🇦 is so expensive.
You mentioned using vodka in your video. But all vodka are not made with potatoes.

Oh thank you! I was wondering the cost! That sounds right up my alley!
Dud you find the style flo they stopped making itv😢so frustrated
So trying this! Thank you, Fallon! I’ve used vodka before, but never one with corn starch.
I really like it… when I have to patience to make it. I hate cooking anything 😂
Thank you! I can't always find the staflo and now I don't need it! Simple recipe that does the job.

I think 50/50 water/starch is probably too much. I'm going to try the 1TB starch/1 cup water as suggested in the video.

Thanks for the tips and recipe. Saving this video for future reference. Best pre is pricey will be trying this.
Best Press is so expensive! This recipe works great, but it definitely doesn't smell as good as Best Press!
I have made mine for years using the sta-flo. I also add a few drops of essential oil to mine. No problems.
We’re you able to get a good scent!? Mine stayed a mild scent but didn’t affect the fabric.

There ya go! No excuses for not pre starching fabric. Corn starch is cheap.
Yes it is! And you can play around with the ratios to get it exactly the way you want it.
Good deal, I'll have to try this.
I have been making mine 😊 that way too thz k you for sharing
It works so well and washes out nicely!
Am I blind or does she not mention the water to cornstarch ratio? I see her saying 2 TBsp of starch, but how much water?
Not sure if you know the answer to this but what if you don't plan to wash the quilt? I know that other DIY products using corn starch end up with insect infestations if they are "stored" for long periods of time. Thanks!
I would definitely only use the starch on a project I was able to wash after it is completed.
All corn is hybridized man made and GMO, even when it says on the label non GMO, your skin will soak up GMOs in your pours when you sweat, id highly suggests making starch in a pot with organic red skinned potatoes peeled
Can I make it in the microwave? I like the stiffness you showed. Thank you so very much!!
I haven’t tried but I would be worried it would just clump since you can’t stir it constantly.
I love making homemade products
Great info! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I have a question, doesn’t the corn starch leave residue on your fabric, especially on dark fabrics? As it is a starch!? Thanks
It can if I don’t boil it enough. But it doesn’t stain. It washes right off.
Thank you for this recipe, but will the starch rot with water over time? Or does boiling it with water prevent it from rotting?
Because one time I mixed starch with water without boiling it, and it rotted after several days.
I havent had an issue but I typically use distilled water and boil so I am sure that helps.

My question is about how long do you cook thisfor can you tell by the consistency at all thanks you lady
It only takes a few minutes. The mixture changes from cloudy to clear. That is when you know it is done.

Corn starch. I have other uses for that vodka.
Lol
I'm allergic to corn. Do you think potato starch or something else would work?
I think it would probably work. Maybe make a small batch and give it a test.
Tapioca powder works

Do you feel like your ratio for your homemade starch is light, medium or heavy so that we know how to adjust your recipe?
It’s very heavy.

First off, starch and water would be TWO ingredients...and without specifying how much water, your "recipe" is useless! 🤷
