Before I stopped buying Atari carts new, this was on my wish list. I didn't realize it was going for $10 or I might have bid higher a couple years ago to get it along with a bunch of lesser titles I got for a couple bucks each and was able to save on shipping as they were from the same seller. There's not much you can do with a 1-button joystick, especially with games like Defender and sports games, and here they found an interesting way around that. I suppose if they considered using left and right on the joystick, instead of towards and away then you could use the paddle buttons instead.
Excellent game and port, indeed, but I'm not sure if Warlords wasn't an even better port. Stargate is a lot more sophisticated sure, but Warlords can be great fun with 4 players.
I totally agree. I was blown away when i bought the game for $10 back in the 80s. I had only wished that the Star Raiders keypad could be used instead of a second joyst to activate special weapons.
Joust would come in a close second. I got that one very late in my 2600's life (around '88 or so) and was really blown away at how good it was. Minimal flicker, great animation on the sprites and pretty good gameplay as well. I wasn't a huge Joust fan when it was in the arcades but totally enjoyed the 2600 port.
@@markstahl1464 Funny thing is i had ended up using the second Atari 2600 joyst as a foot press on the fire button. It was all i could do, but still immensely enjoyed the game.
I really "liked" Stargate in the arcades... even though I was abysmal at it. But I did own Defender for 2600 and so never felt the need to get 2600 Stargate. It does look really great, but I don't think I'd have taken to the use of the second joystick for the specialized controls. Just too much dexterity involved and frankly the shelf where it would have sat during ths game it would likely have been tipped off during vigorous use in the heat of battle and would have really annoyed me. But it looks absolutely fantastic. Really a great version of the cool arcade game !
Ironically, having the smartbomb button on an entirely different controller IS easier to activate. Defender on the 2600 is pretty bad, although I guess you do get a split second of free inviso every time you first your laser..
This game is GREAT! It plays extremely well on a Genesis gamepad, and I like to use a Sega Master System controller as my foot pedal. I just put the ball of my right foot over both buttons of the SMS pad, so I can just press down with my entire foot. It feels just like sustaining a chord on the piano. I hope my little brother never reads this because the Master System "mini-pad" (as he calls it) is his preferred 2600 controller. :D Defender for the 5200 is also a lot of fun, but the controls are not nearly as tight as in 2600 Stargate.
Sadly, that was only on loan and I no longer have it. However the good thing is one lucky podcast listener won it! I would've helped in this game for sure.
I wish you would be playing it when you get a extra guy so I could hear what sound it makes and if it makes the correct sound or just the standard beep beep beep.
It makes the correct sound. I was able to get 15,000 before losing all my guys. And the game is Amazing, they really pushed the limits of the system. Hard as Hell!

Quite possibly the best arcade port for the 2600. Remarkable.

@@imaxjunior6531 WAY too slow for this game. You're much better off just smashing your foot down on a Sega gamepad.

So this has the same abilities as defender but easier to activate

🥲 great work Defender 2,... great work
Was there ever a controller holder like the 5200 robotron one?
There was a plastic tray that came with Spy Hunter that is hard to find and I don't know how well it worked.

Phil did you try this game with the Edladdin Twin 78? Figure that would make the gameplay even better...

I heard that upcoming models of the Super Twin 78 will have a configuration that will be more conducive to the 2600 Stargate control scheme.
several atari games that used 2 joysticks came with a 'dual holder' in the box to make it easier...robotron for the 400/800 had a device like that
