A poem I wrote about Greg in 2002, which he kindly signed for me:
In ‘69 with Crimson, to me he was King,
Fripp asked him to play bass and wanted him to sing.
He Talked to the Wind and craved for Cat Food,
Though later got arrested for swimming in the nude.
He joined Keith and Carl at the dawn of a new decade,
So no more Epitaph or Cadence and Cascade.
His popularity soared on record and on stage,
As he sang about a Sheriff, Father Christmas and The Sage.
He’s highly skilled on guitar be it twelve strings, six or four,
No trucks full of gear, just a Persian rug on the floor.
“ Oh what a Lucky Man “ he sang to us all,
Then later: C’est La Vie, Pirates and So Far to Fall.
I’ve loved his music for so long, he feels like a friend,
For me I hope and pray his show will never end.

There's nothing worse than an awful cover of a great song. Guys, you've avoided that in spades, and have done enormous credit and justice to one of the greatest Christmas songs ever written. Just an aside, if anyone hasn't read Greg Lake's autobiography 'Lucky Man', ask for it for Christmas, it's a great read.

@@johnwitt583 I think that you have misunderstood my post. I think that the Marillion version is a credit to the song and has respected the presentation and format by following the original sheet music with the addition of Steve's guitar solo which complements it well. So I don't agree that only Greg should ever do it (can't speak for Wetton), what I said was I hate great songs being ruined by awful covers. The Marillion cover is excellent.
@@marianocuevas363 Your translation appears to suggest that H's vocals are raspy (harsh?), which I have to disagree with. Greg Lake's voice may sound smoother (he was in his late 20's when he recorded it) but H's voice is ideal for this song.
