Apologies for any audio gaffes, I am uploading this from a hotel.
A video covering typing tutors in Japan, starting with type-in games in magazines, with focus on Harumi Takahashi, and also covering notable works in that genre such as a Ozawa-Ken, Toku-uchi Gunfight With Keyboard, Sword of Kumdor, Typing of the Dead, many licensed anime games, and others.
Apologies for any image quality - some of the sources for this one were quite old. Contains some flashing lights.

Yay! When I started watching this video, I was wondering if you would mention The Typing of Ys. It's a bit surreal to see footage of it here, as I'm the guy who translated Zwei: The Arges Adventure, and Typing of Ys with it! Dunno how much Zwei you played to get that footage, but it remains one of my proudest works as a localizer to this very day.
Really fascinating video -- Sword of Kumdor had somehow flown completely under my radar, but it looks and sounds absolutely FANTASTIC, and is definitely a game I'll need to look into more!
Looking forward to your deep dive into Relics, as I'm pretty fascinated by that series. What really intrigues me, actually, is RINNE -- the Relics game Bothtec had Falcom develop for them, but which Falcom conspicuously never mentions on their website, even in their exhaustive release history timeline. The only acknowledgment of it I've ever seen is in the reveal trailer for Xanadu Next, which uses a track from RINNE's OST -- though it's not credited as such, instead finding its way onto the official Xanadu Next soundtrack as trailer music, as if it were composed specifically FOR Xanadu Next and not taken from an unrelated game. I'm wondering what the story might be behind that whole situation, as I feel like there must be one.

Yep. Relics was a suggestion from a viewer so that'll have a "this video was suggested by" right at the start, but I will be looking into the many oddities surrounding it. RIN:NE, the new fansub, why the heck a series inspired by HR Giger had children's events, etc.
      Also, THAT'S YOU? Comment pinned.

@@f_t_b2238 Bit of an odd choice for pinning on a video about typing tutors, but hey, I'll take it! ;)
Yeah, I worked at XSEED for about eight and a half years, and was initially brought on partially due to my obsessive Falcom fandom, so I had a hand in most of the Falcom titles XSEED released (though I was less involved in the Trails games than the others). For most of them, I was working as a localization reviewer/editor, though I was given both Zwei: The Arges Adventure and Brandish: The Dark Revenant as solo localization projects, basically -- which suited me just fine, as I absolutely ADORE both of those games, and thoroughly enjoyed my time with them. Zwei especially, since Pokkle and Pipiro are literally the best protagonists I could ever imagine writing for -- one a dorky punster with a thing for cougars, and the other an absolutely filterless spitfire. SO much fun trying to capture their quirky personalities in English!
I don't think I have much insight I can really give about anything relating to any of these titles, but hey, if you ever have any questions pertaining to the localizations of Falcom games prior to the NISA Falcom era, I'm happy to answer (provided that answer doesn't delve into heavily NDAed territory, of course).

@@Wyrdwad I picked up a boxed copy of RINNE a few years ago and have meant to try it out someday. I had no idea it was related to the RELICS series. And, I believe the reason Falcom never lists it is because it was published by SoftBank instead of Falcom.

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad 7 месяцев назад +1

@@BasementBrothers I think Falcom lists third-party games published under license from them in their timeline, though, don't they? (I could look it up before replying, but figure the lazier thing to do is just claim as such based on decades-old memories and leave it at that! Heheh.)
I'm in kind of the same boat as you with RINNE, though: I've had the game for ages, but have never actually sat down and played it. I tried once, but it takes SO LONG before you get to a point when you can save, and I happened to die before then, so I had to start the whole game over from scratch, which I really didn't feel like doing. So I moved on to Dinosaur: Resurrection instead, and wound up becoming obsessed with that game for so long that I kind of just put RINNE by the wayside, and never did get back to it.
Also, nice to see you here! I really appreciate being able to interact with you, F_T_B, and others who post such amazingly informative and interesting videos. One of these days, I'll finally start making videos of my own on some of the MSX obscurities I know and love, I just need to get motivated (and work out my capture setup!) -- but every time I see videos from you guys, it brings me another step of the way there! Thanks for doing what you do -- and that goes for F_T_B as well, of course!

@@Wyrdwad The only other game I can even think of that was developed completely by Falcom but published by another company in Japan is the Famicom version of Dragonslayer IV, but I might be forgetting something really obvious.
I suppose the other reason could be that it's considered part of the RELICS series, which isn't their own.
At any rate, it is pretty weird that RINNE exists and that it was developed by Falcom.

Until I saw 8:26, if someone had asked me to make up a typing tutor with a stereotypically-Japanese name, 'Nyan-Nyan Type Commander' is almost certainly what I would have come up with.

I even missed a bunch lol / couldn't use them for copyright reasons / other folks covered them in such a way I couldn't add much. Puyo Puyo has a typing game, Godzilla has one but I couldn't find it on auction / im pretty sure Toho would not like if i used , and I skipped initial D due to prior more famous coverages.
There's actually a seller on Buyee that sells them, that's how I found the Lupin one, so I'll link that seller when I can.
Some of the licensed ones are pulled from demos from DOS/V magazine. i did wayback SSI Tristar's website but available old files are spotty.

How long you've been learning Japanese? You seem to have a profound understanding of the language, dealing with highly ideomatic texts with ease and being able to see allusion or innuendoes that most would miss.

It's self-taught and spotty, and comes from growing up with friends deeply fluent and being in a college that had no TOEFL requirement, so that's why it's peaks and valleys. So I'll know something culturally complex and then bungle an ascending/ descending pronunciation lol

There's a good vid on it I'll link when I find it, that goes over all the minigames in detail. I just found the EoE scene in a typing game to be funny, but to be fair Asuka vs the mass produced EVAs shows up in a lot of stuff.
Kumdor is a legit great rpg, it just has a *nasty* spike at the end

@@f_t_b2238 Hah, thank you for taking the time to send this! I always found NGE tie-in videogames to be extremely interesting regardless of my feelings for source material, even within (and beyond!) the expected typing and dating sims they seemed to have carte blanche to do whatever they wanted, which is something that could make licensed videogames shine if they were allowed to do more often, rather than just bland fighting games and (nowadays) gacha purgatory. Even the NGE fighting game got weird letting you play as nearly all of the abstract angels!
