- New recording studio, new year, new me... NEW FURYU GAME. Okay, well, kind of new. We're working on that whole "fashionably late" part. It's been years since I reviewed the original Caligula, and I was just neutral on it. How'd I like this one. "Like" is kind of underselling it, I think.

Hi I'm glad you checked Caligula Effect 2 out bro, such an overlooked and underrated game. Your first Caligula video got me to try it out and my first impression was, " DAMN this is a train wreck, but I need to see its conclusion..." and now I pre-ordered the sequel when it came out! Caligula Effect2 is still jank, but I can't help but feel proud for the team Historia for how the game came out. Music is phenomenal, and the battle system is even more reactive and satisfying to watch your party commence a battle plan out. There are downgrades like *COUGH* sprintbutton and again, _Where are the quest givers, these f*ckers move around!!_
I really thoroughly enjoyed CE2-- which, makes me uneasy cause' that means I'M the target of this niche and thats ProbablySayingSomething bout' me, Ha- Hahaha-haaa!
And about Gin Noto, finally someone made a character that is likable and I'd actually hang out with, (looking at you R, yes I heard that track, btw Gnosia review when?) or isn't there to make statements or push anything, a real sweetheart! We stan Ginnoto!
Hopefully we can get a Musician route as dlc in the future or something.

The mechanical step backs were certainly weird, but Historia came prepared for basically every other aspect that it's such a charming game despite all that. I hope the make a third one, I'm not too sure if 2 sold that well though.
Gnosia would definitely be a fun video! Might save that one for a rainy day, the year's video schedule is booked atm :D

I was loving the combat and characters for the first few hours but god those sidequests REALLY killed the game for me. No markers for the destination nor the quest giver on the map made them infuriating. It sounds dumb maybe, but as someone who likes to 100% games, that made me drop the game entirely. Hopefully they can fix that if they make another game in the series.
I think that's really fair! I'm not a completionist and dropped those really early. But for completionists? Christ, its a mess.

Spot on review, agreed all the way through. It's definitely not the most impressive jrpg based just on it's parts, but the sum experience for me was great and easily slid into my 2021 GOTY list right at the end of the year.
The way they handled the characters (both npcs and core cast) was great as well and the writing/localization team did a standup job. My least favorite character was Kobato because the playboy/pervert/sexual harasser character trope in anime is mad annoying, but by the end of the game he was arguably my favorite, as I felt like they did a really good job of both explaining 'why' he was the way he was and, outside of that character trait, his straightforwardness translated really well to the more serious topics as well that everyone else in the party were too scared to say out loud.
Special shoutout to Gin because, while I felt like the arc was pretty easy to predict, the way they handled it was great. I actually didn't 'hear' X the first time I saw that cutscene and just assumed the localizers cleaned up the language to get the intent across better and it wasn't until seeing a twitter post about it recently where I realized it was actually just 100% in the script to begin with. Very proud of the team for that, especially when you contrast it with how bad they were in the first game.
Unrelated, I hear you have the instrumentals in the background. I know there was a channel that had them uploaded that got taken down recently, before I could grab them, but is there another source for those versions? The OST, to my knowledge, only has the X / Regret / Remix versions.

Totally agree with the review overall. Caligula Effect 2 did have its problems and jank, but it was a much smoother experience overall compared to 1 and I really enjoyed it. The story's pacing was better, there were way less side quests (and you can do multiple at once!), and the combat had a few tweaks done to it.
I'm glad that some of the topics were handled with more care this time. I didn't like all of the Go Home Club members, but I cared for way more of them this time. Gin's arc made me nervous because I knew where it was going, but thankfully it was handled with grace (unlike poor Sweet P). He ended up being one of my favorites alongside Sasara and Kiriko. Kobato surprised me because I thought I was going to hate him, but his arc made me understand him even if I would find it hard to interact with him in real life.
If there was one thing I wish they did more in 2, it's showing more of the Musicians. I understand why they didn't have Musician links this time around, but I missed getting to know them 1-1 as well.
Kobato also really surprised me! He comes across as an overdone trope but he never takes it too far and with his bonding events you get where he's coming from. What a cool character, that's how you do it. Some were weaker than others, but all of them were lovable at the bare minimum imo.
Does anyone know what song is playing in the beginning? It sounds really familiar, but i can't remember from where it's from.

I'd love to hear you talk at length about drakengard because that game was incredibly important to me when I was young. It was a lot of firsts for me, but I know it's not great.
I'm currently trying to figure out if it's worth the time investment since I know the fanbase would probably eviscerate me haha. I think it was pretty big for when it came out, I just think it doesn't offer much after all the years of games since. A bit thematically shallow. Maybe I'll make a video on Drakengard 3? Who knows haha
...I'm... intrigued. Never would've even known there *was* a Caligula 2 without this! Now I've another game to add to... my increasingly large backlog. ...With the Chrono Cross remaster releasing in a few days (from this comment's date). ...Well, good 'problem' to have for once. It's on the schedule, will be happening in the next few months. I have some big problems with the game's transphobic depiction one of the side characters, which is quite a shame because everything else in the game is so up my alley. Fan of the cast, fan of the story, and the gameplay is great! I'm a big lost dimension fan, so it's cool that it's by the same devs. Just trying to think of a way to discuss it with that big elephant in the room, I hope you look forward to it when it drops tho!

Eyyy! I love this review! I agree with most of the points on your review but somehow, I feel like the regrets of some people are a bit weaker compared to how the traumas of the first gen Go Home Club, though I can let it slide, considering that even the smallest and the most mundane of regrets do affect people big time.
Also as for the comparison of how Gin's and Sweet-P's situations were handled, I wasn't able to find the website where I found the translated interview but I was able to find my screenshot of that part of interview on why Yamanaka directed that approach.
Other than seeing you talk about it here and on Twitter, and the queer stuff, the thing that has me most interested in this game are the battle backgrounds! They are seriously very very cool
I love them, one of the main reasons why I don't think this game looks truly "bad" and in hindsight I wish I had talked about them in the video! It's like you're battling in a music video, it's so cool.

@@naktakroom I've been playing the whole thing on stream, and these kinds of games typically are very up my alley. I just think the story isn't good enough to justify how bad the game is. It's cool for the year it came out, but it's thematically very shallow nowadays. That's just my opinion though, haha

This game has some really amazing music as well! And the combat visuals that show up to mark the play area are so cool to see in each dungeon! This was also the first game I noticed where you can return to the dungeons as sort of "normal" areas afterwards with npcs just roaming around. Though, it sucks how empty the world starts feeling once you realize how copy paste all of the NPCs feel and how pointless the sidequests really are.. Some of them are, I guess, passable, but there's like three of those in the game if I remember right. Do still want to finish it, but it's kinda tough partway through. Also the bonding events are so hilariously abrubpt a lot of the time
A lot of that really comes down to capital J Jank but I did actually really dig how the bonding events were written. They mostly feel really natural and endearing, not wasting your time but packing a punch. Pretty funny stuff. I should have probably talked about the music more, but I was trying to be succinct haha.
@@culIen yeah, some of them were absolutely wonderful! Especially learning about the dear old lady! It was mostly just some of the innitial ones that had the Jank feel with "let's go to the arcade!" fade to black "the arcade was awesome! let's go again sometime". But I loved pretty much all of the cast members and it made me wish the game had just a little more polish. I'm pretty sure that with their next game they could make it big. Kind of was looking at Caligula one and Caligula 2 with the same allowance for jank as Persona 1 and 2. Though I do hope they get ride of those awefully pointless side quests for the next one. But one the music point-probably would've been worth a mention, since the story IS very much based around music as well :D And it's just so banging 💛
I wanted to like 1. I'll probably pick 2 up... if I can get there in my backlog of amazing games.
the backlog will never die, so my philosophy is to just keep stuffing it full to make it feel as bad as it makes me feel

Great video. I’ve never played the first one and I actually forgot this game happened, but even when it came out I wasn’t really attached to it. I’d really like to check it out sometime! Also, wow Kiriko is gorgeous.
this is a really good review but i also feel like you're doubling down on your bad habit of using a bit too much humor and because of that it starts to feel like you're hiding behind your jokes. it makes you seem unconfident in your opinions when in reality you being up alot of interesting and insightful points. the first game also takes a bit too much of the review but maybe that's just me.
That's all pretty fair, but the goal of this one was to be entertaining and see if I still had it in me after the last video. I wanted to be snappy with my delivery and not linger on points for too long, but the degree in which I achieved that is up for debate. Each one is a learning experience, so I can only hope I improve with the next one. Thanks for the feedback!
I really enjoyed the character episodes in the first game despite the other gigantic flaws. It became borderline impossible to recommend to others though because of that. To hear you say the second improves on not only that aspect, but the gameplay is really reassuring. Gonna wait to see if it gets a PC port like Overdose but excited to play it eventually.
I said this in response to another comment, but I'm really surprised a steam port didn't come out alongside console. I just assumed it did, and I hope it sold well enough to justify a PC port. Definitely worth it, especially if you enjoy Overdose.

It's on the review schedule. I'm a bit disappointed in that very transphobic journal entry for one of the NPCs, and that will kind of taint a lot of my appreciation and tone, but the game is solid. No idea what kind of video it will be, but it'll likely come out in April or May.

I hear the second game is a lot better giving the first game another chance again. It's such an incredibly frustrating game with good ideas but it's also so horrendously bad at the same time.
I don't think I can really bring myself to give the second game a second chance after this even if it is significantly better.
