Excellent job as always! My Top 10 of 1991: 1) Europa/Zentropa - Lars Von Trier 2) Barton Fink - Coen Brothers 3) Terminator 2 - James Cameron 4) The Fisher King - Terry Gilliam 5) Mediterraneo - Gabriele Salvatores 6) Night On Earth - Jim Jarmusch 7) Shadows and Fog - Woody Allen 8) What about Bob? - Frank Oz 9) The Silence of the Lambs - Jonathan Demme 10) Other People's Money - Norman Jewison
My Top 10: 10. The Fisher King 9. Sleeping with the Enemy 8. Fried Green Tomatoes 7. Hearts of Darkness 6. What About Bob? 5. Point Break 4. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 3. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey 2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1. The Silence of the Lambs
You mentioned a few films that are definitely on my list, such as "Barton Fink" and "Cape Fear". A few others that I loved that year were the Steve Martin comedy "L.A. Story", The Richard Linklater comedy "Slacker", and Reese Witherspoon's first film, a 1950s drama called "The Man in the Moon".
Some great picks my top 5 are : 5 Child's Play 3 4 The Silence of the Lambs 3 Terminator 2: Judgement Day 2 Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country 1 The Last Boy Scout
TOP 10 FILMS OF 1991: 1. Terminator 2: Judgment Day 2. Beauty & The Beast 3. Boyz N The Hood 4. The Silence Of The Lambs 5. Man In The Moon 6. Thelma & Louise 7. The Fisher King 8. JFK 9. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 10. Defending Your Life
I love Delicatessen too. I personally would put Double Life of Veronique in my list but I am partial to Kieslowski. He was my gateway to art house cinema. Also love that Brighter Summer Day made your list.
I was a teenager in 1991. In the days before internet and cable TV, I was lucky to live in London with lots of cool and great cinemas only a tube ride away. I saw many films that year. Hell, I even sat near Willie Rushton on the opening night of Barton Fink (there's one for the grandkids). I could easily make a Top 20 for 1991 (order subject to constant rearranging, no doubt). 1. L.A. Story 2. Point Break 3. Flirting 4. Only Yesterday 5. Enchanted April 6. Only the Lonely 7. The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear 8. Dogfight 9. The Beautiful Troublemaker (La Belle Noiseuse) 10. Terminator 2: Judgment Day 11.The Doors 12. Beauty and the Beast 13. Barton Fink 14. Naked Lunch 15. Boyz n the Hood 16. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey 17. Doc Hollywood 18. The Addams Family 19. The Stranger 20. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (I loved Delicatessen at the time but have gone off it since. Strange how that happens with certain movies over time. Likewise with films once hated but now liked.)
Mine as of now: 10. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves 9. City Slickers 8. The Rocketeer 7. Godzilla vs King Ghidorah 6. Addams Family 5. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 4. Only Yesterday 3. The Silence of the Lambs 2. Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1. Beauty and the Beast
For all of Nothing but Troubles faults there is a bunch of comedy gold sprinkled throughout. The judge and the dinner scene with the electric train filled with condiments is just one example.
I classify "The Rocketeer" in the ranks of adventure films as Indiana Jones and The Mummy. But the best movie of 1991 was really Hot Shots with Mr. Sheen.
Another great top 10 from a great year for Movies. Fisher King is high on my watch list. Here is my top 20 for that year. 20. What about Bob? 19. The people under the stairs 18. Drop dead Fred 17. The naked gun 2 1/2 16. Hook 15. Switch 14. The Super 13. Gojira vs. King Ghidora 12. Wedlock 11. Dutch 10. Doc Hollywood 9. Defending your life 8. My Girl 7. My Top 10 1. Boyz N The Hood 2. City Slickers 3. Silence of the Lambs 4. Hangin With the Homeboys 5. The Five Heartbeats 6. Hearts of Darkness: A Filmakers Apocalypse 7. City of Hope 8. Terminator 2. 9. Point Break 10. What About Bob Honorable Mentions: Beauty and the Beast, Cape Fear, The Hard Way, JFK, Man In The Moon, My Girl, Thelma and Louise >.
Loved Barton Fink, I think I saw it on my VCR. Blockbuster no doubt. 1 Backdraft I liked the Universal Studio ride Firefighters are awesome. 2 Grand Canon was a nice attempt to mend wounds 3 LA Story. tickled me, best comic /serious Steve Martin. 4 Naked Lunch. Here Cronnenbrg goes beyond weird. 5 Terminator blew me away. 6 Bugsy was a well done gangster biopic. 7 What About Bob. was very funny. 8 Defending your Life. introspective comedy. Liked this a lot and would put it higher on my list. 9 The Pit and the Pendulum. Corman and Price at their finest. 10 Prospero's Books. Greenaway's orgy of a Tempest
The greatest year in film! My number one would have to be JFK, My Own Private Idaho is a close second, and Lambs a close third. I’d also have to throw Boyz, Europa, Homicide, Lovers on the Bridge, T2, Raise the Red Lantern, and Dogfight on there. For 1992, you should really check out “Man Bites Dog” if you haven’t already. It’s something else.
My top ten are: 1. Beauty and the Beast 2. Bugsy 3. Silence of the Lambs 4. JFK 5. Terminator 2 Judgement Day 6. Cape Fear 7. Robin Hood Prince of Thieves 8. Thelma and Louise 9. Barton Fink 10. Boyz in the Hood
Funny you mention Delicatessen, released the same year Jeffrey Dahmer got infamous. btw, if Oswald acted alone, I figure he must've been the guy who made the head shot from the grassy knoll. (shrug)
Barton Fink is the closest thing to "the great American movie " that I can think of....to hell with Citizen Kane. Orson Wells was overrated and John Goodman deserved the Oscar for his friendly psychopath role. I got lucky and saw it in a theater two days after it came out.I was blown away, I'm kind of a movie geek and I have no complaints whatsoever about Barton Fink, it's in my all-time top ten favorites for many very good reasons.
