In 6th grade I wrote a story that very closely follows these steps for the heroes journey. At the time I had no idea, I just wanted to write a compelling story, at the time I read many books so I perhaps intuitively wrote like this. I got offered by the principal to publish this story but I refused because I felt my story wasn't good enough to be published. Thinking back to that story I wrote I realise now that I wrote a full, engaging and coherent story without even realising and I'm kicking myself because I lost it.
I'd dive back into that outlet and write something new, who knows what's bubbling, waiting to come out and surprise you (and perhaps the world) even more
Rocky is always refusing to fight. That’s part of what makes him such a compelling character. We all know he can fight, namely he can take so much punishment and keep getting up and moving forward. I think in nearly every movie, he has that moment, and for different motivating factors. Yeah, they get a little campier and redundant as they go on, but I still think there’s heart in all the sequels. Rocky was and is Stallone’s baby, and it shows in the work.
Excellent video! One nitpic: When describing the climax, you showed scenes from the first act of Legally Blond. A better example would be Elle in the courtroom scene, showing off what she's learned in law school.
I love how there’s imagery of early scenes in films that the narration is describing for later moments in film.. weird… don’t describe the climax while showcasing an inciting incident
I wrote an outline for a book and without knowing it, the story hits these beats. I'm happy to know I had some kind of structure even if i didn't realize it lol Thank you for this video with digestible explanations, this can help stabilize and develope my story better playing with these elements.
I think i know one of the readons Harry Potter was so popular, nearly every year is a new retelling of the Hero's Journey built on the previous Journeys
This is my pet-peeve - this isn’t the hero’s Journey. This is Voegler’s adaptation of it called the writers Journey. No shade on Voegler, his work is great and he never makes the claim as near as I can tell - it’s voices on the internet who keep making the incorrect claim.
Imagine writing a script based on this cycle where the hero’s journey is based on an escape from nihilism. It’s compelling enough that it attracts interest and investors with a signed deal. Then under the guise of “a polish” is drastically rewritten without your input as a formulaic beat sheet.

I get the reason for the refusal but ffs don't make the protagonist's reason so petty we lose all respect for them, and don't spend half of the first season stupidly running away from obvious reality.

Thank you so much guys I can't say thanks enough 😊
I'm no dummy. I listened carefully, and took notes. Thank you, Film Courage. You're like a good friend. You always come through.
Doing our best! Love to hear it! Thanks you!
Your "refusal to call" was your lack of intelligence by concluding "I'm no dummy". Good call, keep it up!

You also probably inferred the structure from movies since many in the 80s and 90s followed that structure.
You had your refusal to call
I guarantee your childhood memory is warped by your ego. Story probably sucked ass.

This is going to be a video I watch alot. Thank you for putting this together.
Thank you! We'd like to think it is worth a second watch!
@@filmcourageyour channel single handedly has taught me how to tell story, resulting in one of the fastest growing channels on youtube. Thank you.
My absolute favorite REFUSAL OF THE CALL is in ROCKY when he turns down the big fight.
Thanks for posting!

Excellent video!

Thanks James! You caught us! In some cases we had to make some tough editorial decisions!

Oh wow, excited for this one!
excellent.
Thanks for watching!
Excellent
Thank you! Cheers!
Succinct, and wonderfully illustrated. You could call it a checklist, but you'd be selling the ideas far short of what they deserve. Thanks.
We appreciate it. Thank you for posting!
Great video 🎉
Thank you 😁
You guys are out-doing yourselves.
Which of these movies would you love to watch right now?
Can this be used for novel writing too?

This is really good, thanks for this compilation
Thanks Ye Rabbit!

Surely following this structure is what’s leading to so many story’s feeling predictable these days 🤔
