Welcome back! Balance is a lot better than it was, though always a work in progress. There are lots of good, fun units now that are not over the top and pikes actually counter cav so it'll be better this time around :)
I think EVERY javelin unit are perfect during every "siege tower phase" in attack or defense, even the black dragon javs! There you always have a supply closeby and can find some very good spots to help or to oneshot
Its true, I know it :) I like Jav militia as a fill in unit, they hit harder than they have any right to - I have the black dragons too and they ain't half bad.
Probably bottom line Shenji. Their utility with their bombs (counter for key units, destroy shield wall, hinder pushes, leverage for terrain) out-weights the higher dps that top line gives.
Longbows aren't bad if you use them right and used on the correct maps. I use as mobile artillery and post them up to focus fire on a capture point that is being hotly contested or if I see a troop cluster that isn't being managed properly. Just have to use the fire at ground command.
Top Shenji is superior because if you are playing alone, your team will be mediocre. That means they won't really try to fight in Choke Points. And that means, you'll have to more your Shenjis before finishing your 10 second buff.
longbows main strengths are to take out enemy range units, thats about it. If your shooting at the furthest range it takes time for arrows to arrive causing them to miss alot when the targets are moving, plus their dmg is just mediocre. I will say they still need more buffs
Im glad ranged sucks these days. Made ne learn to play melee units. Now i dont even like to use ranged. Boring afk kill farming just doesn't give much challenge.
HalbSgts murder infantry, Fortes murder cav. They can do the opposite job, just not quite as well as the other can. Both are good solid units and both murder heroes. :)
I think longbowmen unit weakness is they all want to be the hero and out for their own k/d. Notice they hit more targets, but not concentrating on fewer targets kill couple of units and rather hit separately. They hit for 1.6k and 24 of them they should be kill more o4 something like that... or their just "specialized" can't say the other word lol
Also leadership on armour helps you take more units, the basic is 700 with leadership on armour I've gone a max of 789, other people get higher this enables the use of extra unit in gold tier

He’s probably on the frontier server so they have leadership reducing doctrines and more leadership than the other servers so they can afford triple golds (I think I could be wrong)
And 900 armor, don't forget that bit ;) Its the new reforged armor mechanic. I create armor with leadership as the primary stat and HP/toughness as the secondary stat - just keep forging until you have what you need. I have been playing such a long time that my inventory is just full of crafting materials and schematics.

Yah, suspected as much. In solo theres not any real coordination so the opportunity to exploit is lower, so I just use the bang bang line :)

Most bad units have a very specific scenario that they are useful in - longbows are no different :)
Counter other ranged with longbows. But 90% of the time other units will be of more use for the team.

Player crafted armor can increase your base maximum.
Some servers have unit doctrines that can lower their cost.

They have a place I guess but they are such a passive unit. No offensive or defensive value, only scattered damage over time
