    This is one of the coolest DIY Router tables on RUclips. I've seen a bigger one, but it was for a different shop, the builder specifically wanted it to be 42" or 44" so as to do double duty as an extension of the Miter Saw table area.
    That Amber makes it look like a desk from Jr. High Wood Shop.! That's why you subconsciously don't like it.😎

    Thanks for your honesty about fear preventing you from starting your project. As a complete woodworking novice, I can relate. With each project though I am getting more comfortable with the tools I inherited from my father in law after his passing. My router table isn’t nearly as complex or nice as your finished project but it works for my needs, and I love that satisfaction that comes from building it yourself. Without RUclips U, I wouldn’t know where to start. Much appreciation for taking the time to post your instructive videos.

    I bought the plan and getting ready to build the cabinet. I ended up buying a finished top from Amazon. I wanted the double track for a miter gauge and T-bolts. I strongly dislike working with MDF. I was looking at a hardwood plywood by the time I priced everything out. Could buy a fully laminated MDF top with the track I wanted for like $50 more than I could build the top. Plus the top came with a 3/8 aluminum router plate. The fence was the same deal only cheaper than I could build it. I have wanted a router lift forever. I will say most of the name brand lifts are super nice. But I worked machine shops most of my life. I know what things cost to build $300 to $400 is more than I want to pay. I built my own from wood scraps in my trash bin and hardware. My top is finished, I just need the cabinet to set it on. Someday I may build another top. I think a clear coated red oak plywood top with walnut trim would look nice. But I have a lot of projects I need to do, so I doubt that will happen. I may modify this table with fold down table extension wings. I want a long table jointer but do not have the room in my small shop. I plan on using this router table as my jointer.

    I know you've gotten a gazillion comments on what to do to keep your pieces together for a moment while you walk away to get something, or reposition yourself for a better grip or better angle of attack. If you quickset a couple of screws, not tight even just the 1st thread or 2. But, thanks for illustrating how things don't or sometimes wont go right, especially if you're in a hurry, cause is your side hustle and you ain't do'n it full time yet. Love y'all's videos and the encouragement. So many of us need it, some people go without any.

    Here's an idea for routing out the rebate for the router plate: first use the plate to create a negative template in some hardboard using a hand-held router and a bit with a flush trim bit, running the bushing against the plate. You'll end up with a negative template that is larger than the router plate by the size of the router bit. Then use this template with a guide bushing in the router that is that is larger than the diameter of the bit you use for the insert by exactly the radius of the previous flush trim bit you used. You'll end up with an exact matching inset.

    • @jcowboy123
      @jcowboy123 11 месяцев назад

      Hi ,so if I use a 1/2 inch trim bit I would use a 1 inch collar after ? Thx in advance

    • @PeterFreese
      @PeterFreese 11 месяцев назад

      @@jcowboy123The difference between the bushings should be twice the diameter of your router bit. For example, using a 1/4" straight bit, you would use a 1/2" bushing to create the template, and then a 1" bushing when using the template. Similarly, if you used a 1/8" straight bit, you'd use a 1/4" bushing when creating the template and a 1/2" bushing when routing using the template. Finally, if you wanted to use a flush template bit when creating the template, you'd then switch to a bushing 3x the size of the bit when using the template -- which is still basically just adding twice the diameter of the first bushing (the size of the router bit) for the second bushing. Hope that's not overly complicated.

    That looks awesome (and I thought the yellow looked good but I was in my 20's in the 1980's, so what do I know). I have a suggestion. I am planning on rebuilding my router table that I built several years ago. I put a 4 inch dust collection port behind my router. If I rebuild it, I will put the pipe directly under the router and route it to the back of the cabinet. While my dust collector does a great job of sucking the chips into the box, a large amount of chips pile up under the router and I have to clean it out frequently.

    • @davidkendrick3158
      @davidkendrick3158 2 года назад

      @Darin Hamilton You might take a look at your airflow. If that compartment is too airtight, it won't have enough airflow for the dust collection and you'll end up with chip accumulation in certain spots. To test that, prop open the front door with a small block of wood and route a test piece. If the dust collection improves, then airflow is your problem and you'll need to put some air intake holes into that compartment to allow for greater airflow. Just take a 1/2" forstner bit and drill 6-8 holes in the back and that will work without them being visible.

    • @hamilde
      @hamilde 2 года назад

      @@davidkendrick3158 I drilled some holes in the bottom of the front door, figuring that the air flow from front to back would help, but it didn't. I always thought about making the hole larger to increase the flow . I also thought of some other solutions but never got around to it. It isn't a big problem but if I built it again, I would put the pipe directly under the router.

My brain says 'boxes will still be boxes even if they are not 90° at each corner'. That might be true, but drawers won't slide if they are messed up.

I couldn't find any laminate for it at the time so It was coated with shellac, sanded and then spray painted black from a can, then finished with spray urethane. It come out perfect. I was surprised at how well and evenly coated the paint turned out. After 15+ years the desk top is holding up very well.

    TIP to keep DUST from sucking into the intake vent of your router - I have the exact Bosch router and one thing I did in addition to a dust collection hole at the back of the cabinet, was I clamped a 6" stretch of Flexible Aluminum Dryer Vent Hose to the bottom off my router, down to a 4" hole I drilled at the bottom of my dust cab. Doing so, keeps the dust inside the cab from sucking up thru the intake vent of your router. The stretch of dryer vent hose will move up and down with your router as you make adjustments and change out bits. Your router will be happy, because it's intaking fresh “dustless” air coming in from your lower drawer compartment.

    I actually build my shop pieces with a flush back (no over hang) so they will fit up against the wall when not in use. But great recovery in using trim to stand in the gap. And hey - ‘mistakes’ happen on each build - it shows that you’re human and gives an opportunity to problem solve to have ‘added features’ in the end! 😊
    Good change on the lacquer- I personally don’t care for that deep yellowing effect either - a cream or French vanilla color is my favorite.
    Great idea about using clamps to reduce movement when seating the pocket hole screws - I discover this by accident when I didn’t have enough hand strength to pull both pieces of wood together just by the screws. Clamp first and things go SO much better.
    The one area that I struggle with is dust collection on the underside. I have the dust collection attachments from Bosh, but I still have saw dust flying everywhere. Looking forward to any solutions you might come up with.
    Great video Matt. LOVE the production, camera work and editing. Good solid stuff here Matt. Nicely done!

    I'm going to be building your out feed table and this router table this spring. I wasn't going to build them at first cuz I was nervous and didn't think I could do it. This video makes me feel like I can do it though!

    Another great job and inspiration, thank you. At about 2:20 into the build I see you are still saving your glue for use later in the same spot. Looking good.

    Really nice build Matt! It is scary how close this is to the router table I built earlier this year. The only real difference on the cabinet is that you used the walnut edgebanding and I did full face drawers/doors on mine. I like that you own your mistakes and even better that you show us your solutions. I made my top very similarly, I used a lower layer of 3/4" Baltic Birch and a top layer of 3/4" MDF, laminated together, and then laminate (formica) on top of that. It worked out really well and then I attached it with almost no overhang on the back (maybe 1/4"), so your "mistake" looks about like my Plan! One suggestion when you install your dust collection.... I put my 4" dust port on the back, so that the bottom of the opening is flush with the bottom of the router compartment. I used a cove bit on the inside bottom of my door to create a path for some air to get in and sweep across the bottom into the dust port. It works very well. I only get the smallest amount of dust/chips in the back corners. If that ever starts to bother me (not yet!) I can put some angle baffles back there. You are gonna love that new router table. Thanks for sharing!

      That is how I laminated my outfeed table/router table. I trimmed both the table top and the router lift in mahogany. Really love how it turned out. Working on the dust collection next.

    You could maybe put some tape or some rubber backing in your gaps where the router fits. Would also help with the vibration and keep everything balanced.

    Hi Matt, thanks so much for posting this, I've been looking forward to it since you posted the preview last week as I'm about to make something similar myself. I really appreciate you leaving in your error as I experienced exactly the same thing on a different project today (I was much less restrained with my language than you were and called it a day at that point!). It's reassuring to know that mistakes like that happen to everyone. I've also noticed you mention the fear of failure in woodowrk a few times and it's something that I suffer from massively so I really appreciate the encouragement and the honesty from your channel.
    Incidentally, I have a similar router plate (the basic Kreg one) and they recommend placing the plate on the table top and adding some offcuts to frame the outside of the plate, then removing and using the frame and a template bit to cut a precise outline of the router plate.
    Thanks for the great content.

    Beautiful work, man. I like the back trim being flush. You could have routed the cabling out the side somehow and it would sit against the wall when not in use, maybe.

    Very generous to share this. Thank you so much.
    I'm a beginner with tight space and I need everything to roll and this is by far the best router table setup I've come across after dozens of videos.

    Just watched this yet again. I think this is one of your better builds. I agree with fear getting the best of me when it comes to taking on some of these woodworking projects. I just finished a new platform bed with storage for my daughter that I was totally apprehensive about starting. Its not perfect but it looks great and I learned a TON along the way.

      @@731Woodworks thanks but I am looking even simpler than that. Let's say that I am going to build a cabinet. And when I am done, the inside dimensions of the space that I want to put the drawer is 15" wide, 6" tall and 16" deep. From that space how do you measure what size to make the drawer typically and what size of drawer guides do you get?

    The only problem here in Ireland is trying to get the metal runners and tracks to fit into them. Have to send out foreign to buy them online. Even the chain of hardware stores around my country called Screwfix don't do them but just like if you buy a plane in the shop they do not sell blades you have to go to another hardware to buy one. If you buy online you get a price for the item but by the time you receive it you end up paying shipping and courier fees as well as stamp duty so it becomes expensive when it arrives at your door. I'm in my 60s and know nothing about online shopping so I have to rely on making my own in timber. The joys of living ha ha ha
