You appear inspired by this amp! That's not to say you haven't been inspired by others, you clearly have :-D super tones and some great riffs there man! It's really refreshing to hear someone play the way you do. It makes me want to play my guitar instead of it just sitting in it's case, thanks!
I've a 6100LM head... channel 1 gives out various spectrum of clean tones, channel 2 contains a catalog of early Marshall JTM to JCM800 tones, channel 3 has the JCM 900 SLX tone and beyond.... Despite already owning a Mesa Boogie mark IIB combo... it's still has always been my desired amp to own since I saw it in the shop when it first appeared inthe early 90s but I only managed to purchase it on Valentine's Day 2020. Mine is a black 6100LM head running 5881 power tubes with a 1960B 4 X 12 cabinet. Playing it with the decibel meter showing 90+db is my simple idea of a good time. Thanks for the video,Johan... I enjoyed it greatly.... Now I think I'll go fire up mine up as I just recently completed insulating the cabinet cavity of the 4 X 12 with sponge linings and furry fillings. Thanks again for that video Johan.
Had a JVM410H and sold it - felt like riding a dead horse. Now i bought a 6100 5881 Version. One of the best Amps i ever played! Love the orange channel, but even the clean channel is very good.
Yes, of course, you CAN play, and also achieve a great tone, but the best thing about you is the way that you reply in the comments section. So humble, kind and respectful. You sir, are a great man. Greetings from the other side of the World, Argentina! 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
You got that to sound great, I had it in the 90's but never managed to squeeze out such nice sounds as you did in the video. Or maybe I did, its a long way back. Thanks for a very nice "flashback" video!
By far the Best Demo of the 6100 LM on YT, Johann! I have one myself and i had a pretty hard time to dial in some good tones. But once you arrive, that thing screams! Rock n' Roll!!
Wow I think you just covered all of my favorite Marshall-tones!! Great amp, beautiful tone(s), great playing! Tack för den fantastiska videon Johan! Cheers from Finland! 🇫🇮 🤘🏻
Best Marshall ever in my opinion, I use mine a lot. Everything Marshall from clean to super lead is there! I'm about to buy yet another one, there's one guy selling a full stack so... Great job Johan!
A very nice job making excellent use of the channels with various tones! I bought one of these new in the 90's from Strings & Things in Memphis and still use it regularly today. My 77 LP Custom sounds killer, but the 62 Strat sounds the best. It's taken a lot of years tweaking the 6100 (like it does anyone with an excellent tube amp) but as you've stated, I've learned over the years just how versatile this Marshall amp is. The clean tone is incredible. I get a pretty good clean tone with a '72 Custom Tele that I built with Barden Pickups when rarely playing country. Overall, I leave mine pretty much wide open, to the point of breakup and clipping, with few pedals (Analog Man TS9 and others to spice it up) rolling back on gain/tone with TS9 most of the time, but using knobs on the guitar itself for control. Although, as you know, one can plug direct and cook this baby until the walls melt. In my humble experience, when people ask about the tone of my rig, I usually point out that Marshall Amps aren't going to jump-out-of-the-factory and make them sound like Joe Bonamassa or whoever. I think it was said in the comments here that lots of people spend tons of money and give up too quickly on amps when they aren't satisfied with that ultimate quest for the "right" sound/tone, and I agree with that thinking. They are like people who jump from woman to woman expecting the next will be better. It takes time, tweaking, hard work, and patience, but finding an amp that's versatile enough to work with and go the distance. I don't care what genre anyone plays or if they use a 6100 in the studio or on the road. IMHO, this is the best Marshall 100 watt head for the money. BTW...I've tried various tubes, but Tung-Sol works best for me. Thanks for making this video.
I've been chasing tone for over 30 years now and I drool every time I hear you play the Marshalls. Love their character and attitude. just blows me away the sound you get out these amps. always impressed.... Well its back to the Tom Scholz Rockman for me :-)
One of the most versatile Marshall amps. It was my first Marshall and it's still one of my main amps. Mine doesn't sound that good though, but that's because of your talent Johan Frehley!
I love that amp, mainly for its yellow channel that covers it all from light smoke to heavy distortion. btw, it's always great fun to watch you doing interesting things, Johan.
That Marshall sounds great to my ears! Good demo and dig this dude's accent too! You know in my decades of experience going to Rock concerts in Arenas, stadiums, amphitheaters etc., the guitar amps I've seen the most by far on stage are Marshalls! No surprise there, ay! They just sound like rock & frickin roll pal!!
Finally. A Great demo of this. I have 697/800 and sold it like a MORON in 1999. I had one of the blue ones like that in 2006. I'm going to get another one. Your energy and playing is great. Thanks for doing what you do man. Cheers from Austin Tx. :))
I agree with you Johan. I found this amp in a reharsal room and I immediately fell in love with it. A lot of tones very similar to other glorious Marshall amps (with a little work on it I obtain a tone thats it's very close to the saturated sound of my glorious Marshall 2204 for istance). You can have a clean tone (I'm not a huge fan of totally clean tones but it could be useful sometimes!) that works very well with pedal fx that need a clean channel. An absolutely overlooked and unknown amp. By the way, in Italy you could find many second-hand models with a relatively cheap price if compared with other type of Marshall used amps.
Wow! Hadn't heard that model before. It covers a TON of tonal territory. And at the hands of the "Marshall-Meister" Johan it sounds incredible as always. I'll have to start scouring Craigslist in my area to see if one turns up. I agree with the "Johan Frehley" comment. Rock on bro!
WOW 🤘 What a great sound..... BUT: Even better what a great guitarist !!! Absolutely great !!!! Greetings from Germany ( Hamburg ) Your tests are the best on RUclips 🙏🙏🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️
Fantastic. I had the 1x12 for a time and found back then the way for me to get it working was pull tubes and put a nicely worn in 12t75. That knocked some dbs off and got the mojo happening. The heavy duty eV style Celestion was an impressive performance speaker but not for tone and feel. The spirits of feedback were with you today again may they squeal for you always mate
I have a blue one with el34's and the best sounding marshall I ever played through. I think I need another one too before they become expensive. It has the best brown sound I have ever experienced. Not as midrangey as Johan's video, because I believe Johan turns the midrange all the way up and adjusts the treble and bass accordingly.
@@duleyone True I had the regular version and then many years later tried the blue one at guitar center, dont remember my amp sounding like that, the crunch channels were usuable , before i was just using the clean with pedals. I thought it was the guitar I was using and still think its a factor, back then i was using a jackson soloist and when i tried the blue head I was using a les paul. I just couldnt believe how good it sounded and made me miss the head i got rid of. But after reading the blue version only sounds like this... I dont feel so bad anymore thanks!
The 6100 has been my " Go to " amp for many years , these are probably in my mind one of the most underrated Marshall amps made . Pure kick ass Marshall tone with a heap of options as long as your arm !! I've owned many Marshall heads over the years , but i've sold them all but my 6100LM ! I run my 6100LM with a pair of Gold Lion KT66 (Pulled the outer pair) Give them a try , you won't go back to a 6L6GC i'm betting , flat out killer tone . Over the years I've tried almost every tube brand & type , and these sound so good .
My God, Johan !!!! My 30th never sounded this good ! They say alot of tone is in the players fingers. There has always been alot in yours. Many thanks for the excellent review, as always.
99% of the reasons it didn’t sound as good has to do with the quality of the tubes they were shipped with and how they were biased. Add to that, Johan is in a practice space where he can crank it higher than most guys - and he uses a power soak, so he can crank it even higher to get that power tube saturation. As well as quality mic’d, so you hear the quality tones at stereo volume
Excellent review, I'm going to record a live album and this is the Marshall option we have at the studio. After this video, I'm excited with the amp. =) Thanks!
Great video Johan. Such an under-rated Marshall. One of my personal favorites. Such a sweet Crunch Channel. Reminds me of an 800 with a slightly warmer low end. Keep up the great work man!! DP
I own a 6100LM. What's cool about this amp is that certain pre-amp tubes are dedicated for particular channels. The pre-amp has a total of (egads!) 7 pre-amp tubes. V1 is the clean channel only. V2 and V6 is for the crunch channel. V3, V4, & V5 is for the lead channel. V7 is the phase inverter. The 6100 can sound like one of the best Marshall's ever made, or it can sound like complete shit, depending on what kind of pre-amp tubes you're using. If every channel sounds bad and lack luster, replace V7. Tube rolling is a good idea in this amp to get the particular sound you want. V1 will come alive if you use a Mullard reissue. I don't recommend Sovtek tubes in this amp. Chinese pre-amp tubes sound fabulous in the lead channel. Because there was a pretty extreme shortage of EL34's at the time they made these amps, Marshall tended to use 5881's, and I put in JJ 5881's in my own 6100 and it's never sounded better. This amp is unusual in that each channel has it's own "master" volume and there's a master volume for the whole amp. The amp will sound best if you raise the master volumes on each channel to at least past 4 and then use the main master volume to control the overall level.
Nice one. I have the combo and matching cab. Both have the massive Gold Speaker. I found it easy to get 6 channels out of this simply by running a Zvex SHO into the FX loop. Then you can control the FX volume to give each of the 3 channels a simply and handy boost of volume for soloing etc. Drawback for me is the weight of the combo:) Cracking video again buddy
Another wonderful play through a classic piece of sonic history. The story of ROCK n LOUD...is ALL there man. Thanks to you and Marshall as always Johan :)
Johan Segeborn I know you will, I was just a little surprised cause its almost like your signature catch phrase, every time I watch a video I say it at the same time you do 🤘
I just got a '65 oxford speaker and with it even my crappy 10 watt transistor amp sound great. So big part of the sound is the nice cab you have. cheers
Your killing me! I own a JCM 900 MKIII and a JCM 2000 TSL 100 and there is a 6100lm for sale in Seattle for $475 and I am trying to fight the urge!!!! It sounds great on this vid!
Great demo, Johan. Someone else already mentioned, but sounded vey similar to a JCM2000 I used to own. But I never made it sing like you did on this 30th Anniversary!
These are some of the greatest amps Marshall ever made...modern channel/mode switching, MIDI, a huge clean channel, and full-bodied gain channels. Marshall went off the high-gain cliff with the badly engineered and thin/trebly TSL line, made some great innovations with the JVM (losing some Marshall punch) redeemed by the Satriani version. Nothing else new compares, not the DSL or Origin. I perform regularly with the JVMHJS and was really curious about this one, and got a deal on one, and, wow. It's got all the goods. Mine is a 97, and I want to have a tech go over it to make sure the caps and such are golden, but this thing is going out to the stage sooner or later. Some people say that it's "delicate", I don't know about that, but it doesn't have the horrible stacked boards of the TSL. Really balanced tones. A sleeper. Mine has 6L6 output tubes, some come with 5881s, but mine sure has the sweetest Marshall tones you'll ever hear.
I had always heard they were pretty awesome but any amp with that many knobs and buttons immediately lowers my expectations. Id be wrong on this occasion. Sounds awesome
Thanks for another great video. I much prefer this amp over the new JVM. As you demonstrated, there's so much great tone in this box. The clean channel may be the best on any Marshall ever, though the TSL 100 and Satriani JVM are right there with it. The 6100 does a fine job covering Marshall tones from 1962 to 1992 and then some. Many thanks Johan.
I start wondering if your reviews are of any use... Because everything you play sounds amazing... Sad I never heard you trough a TSL100. Wonder how that would sound like. But most likely amazing ;)
Hey! Awesome video. I have been awaiting the day you would make a video about this amp. This amp is my main practice amp due to its versatility. Sure it sounds less "raw" than my 2203 or laney AOR (you should review this little beast too someday!) but it can do everything! I have a suggestion, could you A/B the channels with their original counterpart? Like channel orange B mode is supposed to sound like a jmp etc etc. With your setup and expertise it would be a great video! Rock on!
This amp has been on my "To get list" for about 17 years ...of course, whenever one pops up, there's usually something else that forces me to let it pass
I had a LE 697/800 (1/2 stack) that I bought in 1996 at a place called "Univibe" in Berkeley Ca. I sold it in 2000 like a MORON. I got a blue tolex 6100 in 2006 that I used through a 1936 for a year. I (again - MORON) sold it for a Framus Ruby Riot I because I didn't want to bother with a stack. Now I'm in a band that plays loud at gigs that I can really crank things up to a PROPER volume. Tomorrow a black tolex 6100 (EL34) will arrive. I shall keep this one. Cheers Johan. This video has been simultaneously making me content in knowing what I have to look forward to, and driving me insane with impatient antici...PATION. :D
AND it came in the mail today. It won't turn on. I know it is ridiculous but I am very pissed off about it. I'll take it to the doctor, get it running, and try not to be obsessed about it...but I am. :/
I have to finish the story. My tech said the chassis has sand in it and told me to get a refund. After a couple of weeks, I had to contact PayPal with a claim so I could get my money back because the seller refused. I got the refund...and get to keep the amp so I will repair it for half what the price I paid for it was. So I get my Marshall for around $500. STOKED!
thanks for posting Johan, great tone, I'm really surprised how good this amp sounds. I have recently acquired one 6100LM head and going to retube it. I have a few questions: 1. what tubes are you using in preamp 2. did you bias it to 75% 3. how would you compare core sound of 2203/2204 with respective settings on 6100 channel 2
+frisianspetsnaz Thanks, that's nice of you! I'd be glad too. My main philosophy is usually to max mids and use as much treble as possible Bedford it gets harsh and as much bass as possible before it loses the attack. Cheers!
This is a great sounding Marshall. I believe it's got some issue with a chip or something in the MIDI wich if it goes wrong makes the amp not work at all. Great demo👍
Thanks Johan as always! Your videos are wonderful and I thank you for your time and efforts. Your videos helped me personally for my own sound and gear purchases many times. I have a question though, by listening to this video and in compare to your other vintage Marshal amps, it seems this particular amp is way more compressed? I'm not saying its a bad thing, I'm just wondering if I'm hear correctly. It sounds like there is an Overdrive pedal or booster is pushing the infront of the amp. Also, I'm having a plan to buy my first Fender amp (already owned and recorded with Boogies, Naylor, Marshal, Victory and others). I think I'm confident in buying a boutique all hand-wired Blackface Vibrolux or Deluxe (Achillies - Australian hand-wired boutique amp company). I was wondering based on your experience, which speaker or speakers do you recommend to both keeping the gorgeous Fender clean amp (with highest possible headroom), while having a good pedal platform. It comes with a pair of 2x Jensen C10Qs, or 1x Jensen C12Q. Should I stick to Jensen or go for Celestion models? Cheers!
I didn't know that amp had modded plexi tones lurking inside! How rare are they? Don't hear clipping diodes that Marshall was known for in those days.I have a 1990 jcm 800 2210 I bought brand new for 700.00! Man times have changed, a great amp but a little brittle at low vol because of the clipping diodes. This vid sounded great because you really know your stuff when it comes to recording! This one is one of your very best tone wise!
It's a great Demo of a 6100 not a 6100LM which has a slightly modified circuit. I've got a 6100LM, 6100, 6101 Combo the latter two as shiny gold LE version. The amp has one big disadvantage: It has so many options that it's hard NOT to always fiddle with all the knobs. For me the secret is to dial in 3 fundamental sounds and leave them alone after the exercise. If you need to change tone, tweak guitar tone and volume. And use a floor board to MIDI select the right amp channel and then let board effects do their work. In my case Boss GT5, GT7 and now Mooer GE300 do all pedal effects and switch channels. A 31 Band EQ provides all speaker tones you can imagine, if you loop it in before the power amp and use the stock 4x12s.
@@themanicmechanics496 This is how I use it as well. The amps are extremely flexible and can do many sounds. Thanks to the contour switch they even achieve MESA or Soldano character. But I love them for MY 2 typical Marshally crunch and gain sounds.
Your videos are just so much better than any other demos on youtube - so understated, humble and rocking awesome
+Kevin C Thanks Kevin, you make my day! Cheers Johan

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!
Thank you for this tip. Many people are confused because these volume on each channel. Regards
Sounds excellent, wow! Must be also the speakers/cab.
+theflyingmat Thanks bro!
Another wonderful play through a classic piece of sonic history. The story of ROCK n LOUD...is ALL there man. Thanks to you and Marshall as always Johan :)
Oh No, we didn't get a LETS GO! Now we need 2 for Fridays video
+MB215 Sorry, I'll do better ;-)
Johan Segeborn I know you will, I was just a little surprised cause its almost like your signature catch phrase, every time I watch a video I say it at the same time you do 🤘
another great demo John!!!
Sounds great! Awesome video and amp!
I just got a '65 oxford speaker and with it even my crappy 10 watt transistor amp sound great. So big part of the sound is the nice cab you have. cheers
+MOUNTAINWITCHTV Thanks, it certainly doesn't hurt. Cheers
Another great video Johan dude!
Could you please do a "gear tour" video? I would love to see some of the epic goodies you no doubt have!
Absolutely that was an amazing amp, could cover all the bases. I remember playing that in an isolation room at a music store at max volume
+Richard Lee Rodgers Cheers Richard
Your killing me! I own a JCM 900 MKIII and a JCM 2000 TSL 100 and there is a 6100lm for sale in Seattle for $475 and I am trying to fight the urge!!!! It sounds great on this vid!
There was a mint one of these on sale near me recently.
If only I had room for more half stacks, lol!
Great vid, thanks Johan!
Great amp and great playing
very nice in deed
Great demo. Thanks for sharing
Thanks!
Yum, that was delicious, I'll be back for more Friday! Best Marshall-deli in town!
+Rick McCargar Thanks my friend, you are so welcome! :-)
Great demo, Johan. Someone else already mentioned, but sounded vey similar to a JCM2000 I used to own. But I never made it sing like you did on this 30th Anniversary!
I knew it Johan as I have owned and gigged mine since 1997! Great amp and have had plenty of offers to buy it,but NO of course.Great video mate!
That tone is awesome! Great video Johan, love your stuff!!
+Noeffnwaypal Thanks, yeah it's unusual to find that mid punch in a general purpose amp like this
These are some of the greatest amps Marshall ever made...modern channel/mode switching, MIDI, a huge clean channel, and full-bodied gain channels.
You are an expensive acquaintance :-) I bought a 4010 combo last week, it sounds fantastic. And I just picked up a 6100 top one hour ago.
This one has the fatness of a Satch, and not the reliability problems of the TSL. So much more bottom end than the TSL.
Johan it's my next Marshall head! I love it!!
I have one near MINT that I will be selling soon....
@@cwgatti Uhh let me know!! I might be interested!!!
@ will do. It will be on my Reverb.com store.
@ I haven't decided yet, but I am 90% sure I am gonna sell it. BEST amp I ever owned or even played, but I don't play anymore...
@@cwgatti okay I will be on the lookout. Thank you
I start wondering if your reviews are of any use... Because everything you play sounds amazing... Sad I never heard you trough a TSL100. Wonder how that would sound like. But most likely amazing ;)
Great Demo! I always did like this model. If you get your hands on the Mode 4 I would like to hear your demo of that.
+tim price Thanks Tim, yeah hopefully soon :-)
Damn, nice amp! And versatile is the word! A word not often used to describe Marshalls Lol.
one of the favorite amps of the great late Michael Casswell, rip.
Rock on!
+Tarass Boulba Thanks man, I'll keep it in mind! Cheers Johan
Sounds fantastic!
+NPGANDERSSON Thanks :-)
This amp has been on my "To get list" for about 17 years
...of course, whenever one pops up, there's usually something else that forces me to let it pass
STOKED!
Smart thinking on the speaker wattage extreme limits !
Its loud 8db cut but I had attenuators effected the tone to much .
thanks for posting Johan, great tone, I'm really surprised how good this amp sounds. I have recently acquired one 6100LM head and going to retube it. I have a few questions:
1. what tubes are you using in preamp
2. did you bias it to 75%
3. how would you compare core sound of 2203/2204 with respective settings on 6100 channel 2
A nice versatile amp Johan! Could you maybe do a video about how you basicly set up amps you use... Share your tone secrets you tone wizard :)
+frisianspetsnaz Thanks, that's nice of you! I'd be glad too. My main philosophy is usually to max mids and use as much treble as possible Bedford it gets harsh and as much bass as possible before it loses the attack. Cheers!
Sounds awesome! Damn i have to get a Marshall now. Johan you think the Heritage Greenbacks are even close to the pulsonics?
+The Pedalphiles thanks! I think they sound good but they're not quite like the originals
amazing ROCK tone!!!
+The Fabulous Master Bats Cheers!
This amps sound great! ! !
This is a great sounding Marshall. I believe it's got some issue with a chip or something in the MIDI wich if it goes wrong makes the amp not work at all. Great demo👍
+mats andersson Thanks Mats!
Wow this head sounds killer! Johan can you compare the 6100 2nd channel with a 2203?
Cheers!
Sounds great 👍🏻
Ale lifeson used thus amp on the Rush 1994 counterparts tour and the 1996/97 Test for Echo Tours
+Larry Johnson Thanks Larry, great to hear that!
i really love the 2 channel and 3 for down tuning
+elie thivillon Yeah, it supported down tuning really well
dang, that sounds good
And with 11 tubes, it makes a nice space heater in a cold studio!
+John Lerro Hahaha, multi tasking ;-)
Wonderful sounding amp. I would be curious to hear that head ....or any for that matter through the cheap Marshall China cabs.
+Voxboy876 Thanks, yeah the cab makes the most difference. We could compare this cab to the cheapest Marshall cab actually
RIP Jim Marshall. Let the Marshalls sing!
Id also love to see you do a video on The Marshall Valvestate models.
+chuck jones I actually have a video on the 8080 but hope to do more soon
The harmonious beast
+Alex Mamczur indeed :-)
True. But I immediately found the mode combo on each channel that I liked, and they'll just stay there.
@@themanicmechanics496 This is how I use it as well.
The amps are extremely flexible and can do many sounds. Thanks to the contour switch they even achieve MESA or Soldano character.
But I love them for MY 2 typical Marshally crunch and gain sounds.
Can you do a jcm 900 head with different cabinets ? Thanks in advanced and keep the good work
+Edmund Camilleri Hi Edmund, in this clip I play a 900 through 2 different cabs

Great Video! Im a big fan from johan! ;-)
Owned one for decades
question is.... are you gonna keep it? awesome Johan!
+Revelry 1969 I'm afraid it's not mine. It's actually for sale at 4Sound Gothenburg right that now. Cheers
I hope the prices for that Amp don't go up now. Because of your great video.
Cheers ;)
I used to own one....sure wish I still had it. I felt like I could play “any” song on it.
