- Arcteryx Beta AR Review - New Gore-Tex Pro Shell Most Rugged
The new Arcteryx Beta AR with NEW Gore-Tex Pro Shell Most Rugged WPB membrane. The Beta AR gets an update with the most recent version of Gore-Tex Pro Shell. We worked with Gore-Tex last season to test out the new Pro Shell technology and we were impressed.
The "Most Rugged" version of the Pro Shell is even more durable than previous versions. The Beta AR has 40D and 80D materials in its construction.
Coming in at 17.8 ounces for the XL. This is one heck of a hard shell. AR stands for "all-around". It is a hefty investment, but Dead Bird gear is legit. Hope this overview of fit, function, and style help!

Thank you for your review on this jacket it is absolutely stunning and one is going to be in my mailbox in about four days thank you sir
Looks great! Have the current Beta LT and it's a helluva hard shell. Wearing it with an Atom LT underneath (both XL) the fit is ridiculously on point. 👌
Excellent set up over there! Great combo for most any adventure 😎🙌. Glad you appreciate the fit and function of Arcteryx too!
Does it have to be same size when layering ?
@@HeyHowsMyDriving For me yes. But the Betas don't have the same fit. The LT is more fitted and sits tighter to the body while the AR has a regular fit and a bit more space. I guess it depends on your personal build and how many layers you gonna wear underneath.
Right on stoked to get mine thanks for the video
Thank you! Stoked for you too
I hope this Pro Rugged resolve the problem of delamination.
not likely😂
Can you be more specific? I've got a couple beta ar jackets in the past 7 years that have fallen apart. For me it was the tape seems that came unglued!
I loved my Beata AR jacket, but I'd call it the absolute worst jacket for backpackers. Here's why. I bought mine just before the pandemic (who knew?). As a result, it got very light use for two years. I only wore it in the city to go shopping and for a few day hikes in a nearby forest. Suddenly, the main zipper stopped working. The jacket still looked like new, but it wouldn't zip. That would be tragic if I were backpacking in the snow. To make matters worse, I sent it abroad at my own expense to be repaired, and not only would Arcteryx not repair it, but they also refused to honor the warranty. I have a Jack Wolfskin jacket that's nearly fifteen years old that still has perfectly working zippers and cost a fraction of the price.
I've heard from people who had a good experience getting repairs and replacements, but it's not a guarantee. Their customer service is random, and at this price point, it's not worth the risk.
This is the third claim about the zip in this jacket I encountered searching for the Customers’ feedback. However, other people reported about the troubles with the zip after 4.5 & 5 years in use…. I’ll probably reconsider my decision to buy this jacket and remain loyal to the brand l’ve been using for 20 years instead!
I want to get one in large one day to have a winter shell. Super expensive I’m not worried about damage but theft.
Hey mate, I know you have been answering this question already.
Have you also had the chance of testing the beta lt? Honestly, I do not that mega hiking stuff, but might be into them sometimes. Also I do rarely ski/snowboarding.
I actually want to buy a good daily rain jacket, my only jacket to backpack and travel with when visiting different countries. Next year I’ll be in Australia during the winter season. Also exploring new zeleand.
Would you prefer the Lt or ar? Honestly?
Excellent review, thank you.
I’ve had 5 Arc jackets and loved them all but my prized Theta AR is delaminating over a huge section of the back. Like you, I’m on the taller side, and the Theta fit great being their longest shell. Unfortunately they stopped making it but I’ve heard that the newer Beta’s are longer than before. Do you know if that is accurate because that one seems to fit you very well and be longer than the previous models that I’ve seen.
Thank you for your time.
Hello! Thank you for the kind words and nice note. Glad you are a fan of Arcteryx as well. I feel that the back length is longer (and in a good way) but I do not have a previous generation to compare it too though. I do agree that the fit is very good. They build such good jackets! Take care
@@Engearment Thank you for replying to my comment , I appreciate it.
Have a great night.
Hi mate, I also have a 2017 Theta AR (small) which is delaminating with 2 non-functioning zippers. Today I tried on the current Beta AR (small) and I have noticed the Beta AR is tighter around the waist when you go to zip up and the rear section isn't as long as my Theta AR. There were no Medium Beta ARs so I could not say if this would fit me well, however I suspect it would be too baggy around the mid-section.
From my internet research, the current jacket models that would match the Theta AR for length is the Beta SV.
@@andomagic
Hi, I’m not sure if this will help you or not but I spoke to an Arcteryx CS rep and he told me that they’re making a long version of the Beta now. I’m going to check into it as a replacement for my Theta.
@@1AbominAble1 Mate that sounds like great news. I tried on a Medium Beta AR and it fits better around the bum area when you zip up but slightly looser in the mid section than the Small Theta AR. I will keep an eye out for the updated verisons. I did try a Medium Beta LT which has a good fit but I missed having a chest pocket. Other great features of the Theta AR was it had a stylish external chest zip garages on the top which was so well integrated into the jacket design unlike most other GoreTex jackets.
Just bought bata AR jacket brand new from Arc’teryx in Boulder Colorado and does not have that red new gore-Tex Pro read label? Did they somehow get an older model ?
In my honest opinion, I think the new Beta ARs may be more "durable" and maintain waterproof properties easier, but damn the shell is a lot thinner now. The older models had that nice thick rigid shell feel. Stock up on your vintage Arc'teryx now or you may pay a big premium soon.
Interesting take. They are a bit thinner now. What denier do you think the older ones were? I had an older SV that was like a Kevlar suit! 😎🙌
Great jacket. I’ve owned one in the past in size M but found it slightly snug with a fleece underneath. I’m 5’11” 155 should I go for a large?
Glad you appreciate the quality! I was just using ours in a 4 hour rain storm and loving it! As for sizing, I am not sure. If I was feeling snug, I would go the next size up. Hope that helps!
@@Engearment Thanks for the response. I didn’t realize the new revisions from 2020 onwards are now longer cut. I really like the kingfisher color way, reminds me a lot of the old Tui color.
I am going to buy an Arcteryx a little closer to christmas, but I am worried about how it fits. There are no stores in my area that hads them, so I have to buy online. I just tried a very cheap raincoat today in L and XL that cost 45$, and it fit like shit. Large fit so snug I could barly have my fleece underneath, and XL fit so big it looked offsetting.
I want to use the Arcteryx Beta AR for hiking and long walks with my GSD in the woods and plan to layer up. I need it to fit a merino wool base layer and a fleece mid layer, maybe a thinner down-jacker during the winter. Would you recomend the L or XL? I'm usually L in everything.
Thanks for the review 👍 I have one question, whats the diffrence between the beta ar and the alpha sv jacket?
Thank you! The SV is more robust materials. The Beta AR is still ridiculously durable and dependable. I believe the hood is differ on the lineup too. I like the AR good with the additional collar. Hope that helps!
Great review! I'm looking into getting a jacket that can be used for frequent hiking and snowboarding a few times per year as well as general purposes. Would you recommend the Beta AR or do you think a Beta LT would be sufficient? Or another option of course.
Thank you!! 🙌. I think this would be ideal for your uses. I am sure the LT version would be more than sufficient as well. Save you some money too!
Have you taken the Beta AR while skiing yet? I know it's rated as a shell for skiing/boarding but I'm curious how it holds up. Could be the perfect 'all around" if I can actually use it hiking in the spring and skiing in the winter.
Thanks!
Heck yea! It’s great for skiing and boarding. Definitely full year round use.
im thinking of either this or the fjällräven keb eco shell. seen ure review on it aswell =)
think u can give the pros and cons/biggest differences between the two?
Oh ya! Both are great. I am in favor of the Beta AR though. It fits great, looks good and just works. I like the hand pocket placements too. Plus, Gore-Tex Pro shell is legit. They are both going to do a fantastic job, but for the hard earned $$ I think the Beta comes out on top. Hope that helps!
How do you find the length in the body? I'm 6ft 2 and my Large 2017 version seemed to be super short. I'm considering a new one in XL.
Hello! I like the length. My torso is 19.5-20” if that helps.
Might pull the trigger on a size L im 6'1 190 and layer lightly when I ski. Thoughts?
Oh boy, I am bad at recommending sizes for others. Sorry! I bet you could do a large and it would be a nice, athletic fit.
@@Engearment Would be everyday rain coat aswell so might go smaller
@@whathappened12 Let us al know what size you go with and how it fits. Could help out a lot of people! Thanks and take care!
А что вы имеете против юбки, у нее в лесу есть отличная функция-защита от клеща!😊
is this as waterproof as the fission sv? im debating on which one to get because of the collar gaurd, the beta ar and the fission sv are the only ones with it
Yes. The Gore-Tex Pro shell here is as good as it gets for waterproof 🙌👌
I bought a beta ar from arteryx il. two weeks ago.. how do you know if it's a new gore tex pro? knowing that in store none has the new gore tex pro red paper. thank you
I am pretty sure it will. D the new goretex. They transitioned over in the fall.
@@Engearment you mean they replaced the jackets with the new gore tex pro in store automatically? so I don't need to change it in the store, is it already new gortex?
@@thomasm5320 Yes, they went to the new Gore-Tex Pro by Fall 2021. So, you are good to go :)
How often do you wash it/have to apply DWR?
I clean it with Nikwax Techwash a few times a year. I dont feel the need to reapply a DWR unless I see complete wetting out. Hope that helps!
What sunglasses are those?
Is it better than the Patagonia Pluma Jacket?
Hello Fernando! I have not used the Pluma yet, so can not speak to that. I will look into it though, as we have a meeting with Patagonia this week.
Hi there’s a person selling a size small beta ar i’m usually a size medium like my zeta sl that fits perfect would a small beta ar be fine?
I can not say for sure. Sizing is hard to guess on. I would not want to size down.
@@Engearment alright thanks anyways i appreciate it
Is this coat good for winter?
Yep! It’s fantastic fir winter.
It’s not warm at all but it keeps wind/ rain off
The “new” most rugged is the same as their “old” goretex pro in their “old” beta ar from 2020. It’s an 80-40 mix.
Interesting... Could you provide some intel on this? I know the materials are 40D and 80D. We have a meeting with Gore-Tex tomorrow and I can ask them about this as well.
@@Engearment Sure, they are using the same materials as their 2020 gtx pro but relabeled it’s as “most rugged” the actual new gtx pro are their other two models. The rugged is just the old gtx pro technically.
@@MobileAura what other two models?
I've been noticing things like this like more paclite and raised prices after they were bought out by China, I think very few people will pick up on this- then it will become more apparent in the future as they reduce their quality each year over time.
@@JonMorah357 The other two models are the extra breathable and extra stretch (going off memory), it’s a delineation of their most rugged, there’s 3 types in total.
Edit: btw they’re all 3 GTX pro, just different types of pro. Old gtx pro is the new “gtx pro most rugged” in my opinion the most rugged is the best one so in theory the old goretex pro is the best one.
What color is this jacket in the video? Thanks
Kingfisher
very noisy?
On par with previous Gore-Tex Pro. So, not silent. But also not too noisy. Hope that helps!
Why are you wearing sunglasses? It's very distracting in the video.
I wear sunglass during the day. Like most people do. You will not like our other 1300 gear reviews if this is your complaint. Move along..
youre mid
Not sure what means.
you're dog water buddy gtfo if this video did not help help you @engearment thanks for tthe vid ignore this guy hahah review the beta IS new for 2022
