Anger in Turkey’s cultural jewel one year on from earthquake

  • It was one year ago today that two devastating earthquakes hit southern Turkey and northern Syria.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
Around 60 thousand people lost their lives and tens of thousands of buildings were left in ruins.
As Turkey marks the anniversary, vigils across the country have seen grief mixed with anger.
Many berated the authorities for the slow pace of reconstruction, and the lack of accountability for the poor construction which led to so many buildings collapsing.
One of the worst hit cities was Antakya - the historical and cultural jewel of Turkey's south.
Vast swathes of the city were destroyed.
But people there are trying to rebuild their lives, as Emily Wither reports, in this piece filmed by Fadi Al Halabi, who lost many of his own family in the earthquake.

Some 96 percent of the buildings that collapsed or needed to be demolished due to the damages they sustains from the two massive earhquakes with around 3000 aftershocks, which is estimated to have the destruction force 10 times that of Kobe Japan were build during the times of previous governments with previous building regulations.
The current government when they were elected changed the construction codes which is why only 4 percent of the collaped buildings are from the new regulation era and they suffered damages either because the ground rose due to water rising beneath the earth or there were unregulatory steps taken during the construction, hence why some 32,000+ court cases of engineers, constructors, or people cutting columns of buildings to make more space !!! were held and many found guilty with misdoings.
For more info on all this I have a folder ''folder 13'' in my playlist.
    Best wishes.

Condolences to the families of those who perished in this terrible tragedy. With the benefit of hindsight, I sincerely hope that lessons will be learned this time and building safety laws will be reviewed thoroughly and vigorously to ensure that this doesn't occur again on Turkish soil. You know, things are too complicated to grasp what's going on in Turkiye for the foreigners, and not everyone, even the people who voted in favor, is fond of the government. Half of the population voted for the government and the other half voted for the opposition. The government party won the elections with a slight difference even though many refugees were given citizenship before the election.

#EmilyWither what an empty, misfortunate comment and weakest news is this? -"Government signed thousands of unregulated buildings", go revise the Government website and find out about regularly updated and implemented policies & regulations for building houses in Türkiye, respect and go search, and listen again what the people says who are explained their disastrous experiences on that video. Find out about what factors play a significant role in the collapsed buildings. Even in developed countries like in the UK there are housing shortages and only 230,000-250,000 houses are built every year. In Türkiye 680,000 houses/blocks of apartments have been destroyed and the Government ordered to build new houses within a year or so since the earthquake last year and planned to accommodate 1.25 million people who were affected by the earthquake. Numbers talks itself!...
