2024 BMW 5 Series G60 (520d xDrive) review - Bigger AND Better?

- The G60 5 Series is about the same size as a short-wheelbase 7 Series from a decade ago and you certainly notice it has grown up. It is about 10 centimeters longer than the G30 it replaces, it has more room for passengers, but it also has a smaller trunk, and it's not quite as agile around the bends. Its bigger body also means it's lugging around about 100 kg of extra weight over its predecessor, and between this, the longer wheelbase, and the very light steering, this feels much more limo-like to drive than any previous 5 Series.

Congrats on the review. Good to see a fellow romanian doing english reviews. How is the comfort and road noise ? Im buying a 550e these days and im not sure which way to go ( i have an order for a 7 series since September with no date in site for allocation and I’m thinking to quit as it can go up to 1 year)
Was it as plastic as they are saying in other reviews?

Back in the days toyota tried its best to look like a BMW. Today it is the other way around.
Good BMW design is coming back with the Neue Klasse models, thankfully.

Really? I'm surprised to hear this. Maybe a diesel will be added later? It's silly not to offer one and I'm sure there are still plenty of people in the UK who would still buy an oil burner, even despite the constant bad publicity that diesel has gotten over the last few years.
I drive the 520d previous model and there is no way I’m trading it in for a 2.0i . I can get 700 miles to a tank .

It has its good sides :) I'm not a fan of the exterior (although I do love the back), but the interior is really nice, and it is really comfortable to drive too.

I sold my F90 because it was so big and heavy. The new 5 is much bigger, so sad. I would chose the 3-Series, smart to drive.
Wow, you had an F90! That must have been awesome! I totally get you on the size thing, though. I drive a 2010 3 Series and I think it's just the right size. What do you drive now?
Good review but i feel the G30 LCI 520d seems a much better buy and makes more sense.

Nope. Chinese copy of a BMW, for Chinese people and other new market countries. Could be a KIA. BMW should just stop pretending to sell cars in Europe for a start.
Yeah, the focus on the Chinese market has had negative effects on many automakers…

Cheers, thanks for watching! I’m a sucker for M packs, so I’d choose that, and maybe one of the more premium leather options for the seats. It comes pretty well equipped as standard. If you’re from Europe, wait a few months and get the 540d version :D
@@OneTireFire Hello, I ordered the 530e with mpack but still questioning if I should include somo options like the head up display, live cockpit with augmented reality and the active suspension for instance. Besides those the car will come very well equiped :)
big bmw fanboy, or at least was... this 5 series is design disaster, I just can't get over of how wrong it looks and how cheapened it is, full of cheap, hard plastic. For a lot more money. Terrible, this brand is going down rapidly..

Yeah, I'd probably also go for a black-on-black G60, although it's not as necessary as on the new 7 Series...

As a reviewer, I configured a G60 before shooting the review and didn't see it as an option or part of any pack available here. As a reviewer, I'm pretty sure you're wrong.
Although it looks a bit weird, I personally like that is higher and that the black plastic in the lower body in this regular trim is a more practical option in real life. The ground clearance also seems quite high, more like a crossover. Not that sporty-looking as the g30 for sure, but i think this is more suitable for every day life.
You may be right, but it’s ultimately a matter of taste and how much practicality and usability you are willing to sacrifice for the benefit of having lower slung and sporty looking car.
Mercedes did it right by giving new line up for ev and leaving ic engines authentic or hybrid
Yes, I agree completely. BMW will also launch parallel ICE and EV model lines with the next generation of its models, confirming that Mercedes did it right.
The only manufacturer in the world, using both LCI and electric in one platform. That is why the design needed to be adapted

Illuminated grill is tacky. G30 was a lot nicer.
I agree that the G30 was so much prettier than this, but the illuminated grille has grown on me after seeing it on so many new BMWs...

@@solitude6213 Well, if you look at the really basic stuff like size and price, I think it's approaching 7 Series territory. BMW no longer offers short and long-wheelbase versions of the 7 Series. That's because the current 7 is already a long-wheelbase car, and I think some people who would have considered a short-wheelbase 7 in the past might think this new 5 is enough. And it's obviously my opinion, so you can disagree.
