My bookshelves have shifted and grown substantially based on your influence. In that sense, you've changed my life.
    (1) Do you ever think about the positive influence-as a kind of reader-mentor-you've had on your viewers, and how does that make you feel?
    (2) Who or what on BookTube has influenced or changed you most (as a viewer).
Thank you for all the years of wonderful videos.

I discovered your channel a few months back and shared it with my family. There are many of us, and you have become popular, so we’re probably 90% responsible for your last 900-1,000 subscribers. Although half of them are still in primary school or younger, many read the books they find interesting, from mysteries to westerns to romances, etc. Your library tours are invaluable to us.
I’m telling you that you do good works, and this works for us.
Now that the as*kissing is out of the way, on to a few questions.
    1) Did you become a reader naturally, or do you attribute it to your rigorous schooling?
    2) Do you like contemporary gay romance(commonly referred to as male/male)books? More than straight romances? (I remember you read Gordon Merrick, but his books are decades old.)
    3) Are you able to overlook poor writing? Or does it just ruin the experience and the story, as it does for many of us?
    4) Will you publish a book of your favorite reviews?
    5) Will you consider a daily segment called “Books I Read Last Night,” with very short opinions and/or recommendations? It wouldn’t have to be more than 5-10 minutes, and many of us are quite curious, as we routinely read a book every night, then group text our thoughts in the morning, after sleeping on it, well, not literally, but sometimes.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
    😺✌️

TRIMC pointed me to your channel and I've been soaking up your videos in many spare moments the last couple of weeks, thanks for all the great recommendations and RANTS! Your adamant love for reading has got me finally 100 pages out from finishing Gravity's Rainbow, so appreciate the spiritual kick up the ass
Q's: What concerns/excites you most about the current direction of book publishing?
What books have you struggled most with finishing, and do you believe readers should power through a work considered "essential" if it's really dull/grating to them?
What makes you go out of your way to watch a film/TV show?
If you were asked to run a publishing house, what five novels would you seek to reprint and why?

What was your favorite music when you were growing up?
If we see you in public (at the Brattle), should we say hi?
What do you eat for breakfast?
    Coffee or tea?
If you couldn't have a dog, what other kind of pet would you have?
What Boston area bookstore (used and/or new) that's now closed do you miss the most?

    Got two for you!
As the medium and form of writing has evolved over time (epic poem to lyrical to novel to maximalist novel, etc.) do you think technology and culture has led potentially great literary minds to write tweets, substacks, or video games/TV series stories rather than books?
Secondly, do you have a disdain for DFW’s nonfiction as well?

Do you, on the top of your head, know of any author famous for their novels whose work of poetry you think is underapreciated?

  • @pattube
    @pattube 4 месяца назад +3

I'm one of the new subscribers here! 😊 I wanted to ask you please:
Do you think graphic novels or popular comic books qualify as literary fiction? For example, I've had friends tell me (though I myself have never verified) that Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons has been ranked by some critics in their top 100 novels of all time. I'm not sure based on what criteria. I suppose graphic novels seem like a kind of mix between novels and films.
I guess the broader question is if genre fiction can be literary fiction? I've always loved both genre fiction (e.g. SF, fantasy, horror, detective) as well as literary fiction (and slipstream genre fiction), but it seems from time immemorial there's been a tension or even outright conflict between what the literati value and what the average person like me values.

On your advice, I always choose my favorite translations but only among the most accurate, complete versions and from among the top 3-5 recommended ones. In other words I first filter out so-called bad ones and choose my favorite or sometimes I read all the 3-5 translations if I find which 3-5 are the best!
    My question:
What are the top 3-5 best translations of these works, or easier which few translations are really bad so I avoid them:
    1. Iliad (Homer)
    2. The Odyssey (Homer)
    3. The Divine Comedy (Dante)
    4. Madame Bovary (Gustave Flaubert)
    5. The Prince (Niccolò Machiavelli)
    6. Faust (Goethe)
    7. Aeneid (Virgil)

Hi Steve - congratulations on the new milestone (or is that mill stone ?!). Just a couple of questions:
One of your videos today refers to books you just don't like but which continue to "nag" at you. Could you mention a couple of these "nagging books" and do they meet your critical standards for being "good books" but have some other factor which makes you dislike them? If so, what do you think that factor may be? and second
Do you find poetry more "nagging" than other types of writing - I know you have re-evaluated Auden and are now reconsidering Phillip Larkin - do you think the appropriate criteria for evaluating poetry are more difficult to pin down ?
    Thanks very much.

    1. What is next on the New Testament/Gospel Read Thru? The Gospel of St. John or the Acts of the Apostles? I guess it is too much to eventually hear you read and comment on "The Revelation?'
    2. I have been enjoying your shelf tours. Recently you held up the first book in Terry Goodkind's "The Sword of Truth" series "Wizard's First Rule." I really enjoy all the books in that series and am currently on a reread - I am up to Book 7 "The Pillars of Creation." I've deliberately steered away from the haters because I really enjoy the series.

I've heard you talk about envisioning books you want to read from particular authors. Is there a play about a person or event from history or a myth that you wish Shakespeare (whomever that mystery man may be . . . ) had written? (You were discussing a book you would like Ros Barber to write -- I'm not sure why I'm venturing to offer you book news but one of Ros Barber's current projects is a biography of Christopher Marlowe that, as I understand it, is strictly a biography of his life and not about discussing authorship questions. It should be great, she's a fantastic communicator. Edit: it is to be a biography - as in up to 1593.)

I'm coming around to your way of thinking on audiobooks. I know you don't listen to them much but what is the most egregious sin you've heard of in terms of the production of an audiobook? I'm currently listening to Graham Greene's 'Our Man in Havana' and every 10 minutes or so, when transitioning between scenes the audiobook gives you a 10-15 second blast of traditional Cuban music. Drums, trumpets, singing, the works. It's obnoxious.
