I have a 21 army green with manual trans. I changed oil at 3k and 5k after that. I changed out trans and axles 15k. Get a can of high temp flat black paint and paint all rust areas and remove rear wheels and paint the drums.
So excited to pick my Lunar Rock up this week! You’re right about watching Taco vids 24/7, currently in that state now. Went from a 04’ 1st gen to a 23’ 3rd, same specs as yours! Best graduation gift ever 🤙🏼
Subscribed. Congrats on your new rig! I have a 2021 TRD Pro in Lunar Rock. About 30K miles. Been all over and off roaded a ton. Never abused, but definitely used. Still looks showroom ready after a quick wash. I also have a Lunar Mist 2003 TRD Off Road that runs as good today as it did when I bought it in September of 2003. Good luck with your Tacoma... it will serve you well. Always change your fluids/belts/etc often and well-ahead of recommend schedule, and it will perform flawlessly for years.
Awesome thanks for the advice. I'm super stoked on the truck and it's been about 8 months now. I couldn't be more satisfied with my purchase!! The plan is to drive her 20 years or as far as she'll go. Wish me luck!
I have the same exact truck that you have. I changed my synthetic oil at 5000 miles through Toyota. They had no problem doing it for me. I got it done for free from the Toyota care. I’m glad I looked at just your video because I found in the comments the same problem that I had with the Bluetooth and then I couldn’t listen to the radio when the car is off now they found out you put the car in neutral first, and then shut the car off and then put it in park and the radio stays on, at least that’s what one of your followers said. I will try as soon as tomorrow comes.
Teaves I own a 2022 Tacoma Lunar Rock just like you. Whatever you do… do NOT do the 10,000mi oil changes that the dealerships want you to follow. These oil filters ppm control is not high enough to keep your oil clean for that long. Unless you can match a LubeFiner or CAT oil filter on your 3.5L you won’t be able to go that long. Please do 5,000mi oil changes to keep your 3.5L V6 lasting long. (I work in the Power Generation industry, I constantly work on CAT, Cummins, Baldor, Blue Star, Briggs & Stratton, etc)
The dealership I go to always reminds me that 10k oil changes are Toyota recommendations. My question to them is how long is the warranty? they tell me 3/36. I let them know that 10k oil changes are for lease's and you don't but it out! I want 300k or more so just do the dam 5k oil change I'm paying for it!
I love my 22 LR Short bed. I’ve gone had a couple situations where a long bed would have been great…but I was able to make it work. I love the look of the short bed 😁 Thanks for the review and walk around. I just hit 24.5k miles (just got back from a trip total 784 miles).
Sounds like you got a sweet truck. For me I was never interested in the double-cab long bed and so far I'm very happy with the short bed. I'm definitely not moving any big furniture but that's a sacrifice I can accept. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
Great review, your observations are spot on. I replaced a '17 access cab with a '23 DCLB and I would never go back to access cab. Way more cabin noise in the AC, always sounded like a window was open. And the suicide doors that require you to open the main door first get old fast. I too hate the camera system, my '17 AC had the standard and it was so much better than the "new and improved" system, in fact the JBL is not great either. I've actually considered seeing if someone might want to swap head units as I prefer the sound of the standard Entune with the basic camera system. If you haven't done it yet, I highly recommend adding the remote tailgate lock, definitely my favorite upgrade so far! Otherwise love the Tacoma platform though, they will run forever with standard routine maintenance, enjoy!
Well hearing that makes me a bit happier about my choice of the double cab! I agree the JBL probably isn't state of the art, but I guess it's good enough for me. I have heard a lot of people recommend the tailgate lock. It seems like a great aftermarket product. I'll definitely add it to my wish list! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy your truck as well!
I started looking for my Tacoma in 23, but I couldn’t find Exactly what I was looking for. Yes there are a Gazillion 5’ Bed Soccer Mommy’s and Daddy’s that have the to pick up groceries. I need a 6’ bed. Finally I found my truck in 24. It’s a 23 TRD Off Road, Double Cab with the 6’ bed. It was slightly used (6K miles). The book price was $51,484. I bought it for $48K. It’s an absolutely great pickup.
Congratulations! Every day when I walk to and from my car I step just little bit slower so I can stare at it. Love this truck. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
For the windows I use Adam's spray wax detailer after I wash my truck and I have no issues with the water. If that's not your thing then try Rain-x. I hope you lesioned and put the Screen-protech on. that radio will only take so many wipes before it get's trashed and with the way light hit's it it's going to drive you crazy!!!
I've been able to get good results on the screens by air dusting and then wiping with a microfiber towel. So far no scratches. Are you sure spray waxes/detailers really help with morning condensation? It's the kind that's so finely beaded you can't see through it. If you're sure it works then I would definitely give it a try! Anyway thanks for watching :)
I'm glad you're liking your truck. I absolutely love mine. I feel the same way about the dirt. Plus with a coat of carnauba wax on there washing it is super easy. Thanks for watching!
Hey everybody's different! Personally I couldn't wait to go camping, hit the trails, and explore. Most of my miles are from long road trips and I won't be able to keep that up in succession forever. With my last car I was averaging 10k miles a year so hopefully I can stay around there. Thanks for watching! :)
hey, great video and it is a nice truck!. I am like you. I love to talk about my truck. I do not have a Tacoma but I just purchased a 2024 Tundra in Lunar Rock color 4x4 with a TRD package.
Congrats on your truck! You got one of the best colors IMO. I like to think of the Tundra as the Tacoma's fun uncle. Wow that is a great point about the car play settings. I honestly didn't consider that I could manage it through my phone. Thanks for the tip. Have a great day!!
i agree the cameras kinda suck but dont give up you will get used to them. also if you change the oil yourself at 5k dont be alarmed at all the metal in the filter, its normal and shouldnt happen again.
In the video at 14:10, what are the two finned pipes in front of the radiator at the bottom. Looks like something for cooling. Is it to do with part of the towing package? Thanks.
I took a look at this, I honestly have no idea. It's out of my depth. In all my research of the truck I don't ever recall reading about the radiator. But if I had to guess I would say it's not related to towing, just based on what I've read about the towing package. Thanks for watching!!
I went a little crazy with road trips and camping trips. I've been up and down California multiple times. Over four months if you only counted daily driving it's probably only been 1000 miles.
I have a 21 army green with manual trans. I changed oil at 3k and 5k after that. I changed out trans and axles 15k. Get a can of high temp flat black paint and paint all rust areas and remove rear wheels and paint the drums.
Sounds like you're doing a lot of good maintenance. Thanks for the advice and thanks for watching!
The rust is unpainted steel. Spray paint it before it gets bad and apply it each time you rotate your tires and oil change every 5k.
Great idea!!

I hope you kept your 1st Gen. =)

My 2018 just hit 80,000 last week.
i’ve changed the oil every 5,000.
Way to take great care of your engine! What type of oil do you use?
you can listen to music if you put the truck in neutral then shut it off then put it in park.
WHAT. Is this real? I read the entire owners manual and I did not know this. I will check, but in the meantime... THANK YOU
@@TyDollarWelcome. I have 2020 Tacoma and it works.
What do you mean?
I have the same exact truck that you have. I changed my synthetic oil at 5000 miles through Toyota. They had no problem doing it for me. I got it done for free from the Toyota care. And I love my Truck too!
I have the exact same truck you do , nice video by the way, 5,000 mile oil changes will make your engine last forever
She's a beauty! I'm sure you're loving yours as well! I have to agree, the oil will be a big deal in the long run. Thanks for watching :)

Just got my new taco trd sport and we share the same love and admiration for the body style. I could still at stare at my truck for hours lol😂

Congrats to you! It's the best truck on the market in my opinion. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
Just had my 2023 trd pro for 4 months too. Under 1k miles haha. I’m
Saving the miles but love the truck

I found out that this is the power steering cooler
The best Toyota mechanic on the internet says 5000 miles don't do the 10.
Haha that is a very good point and slightly stressful
Washboard roads is the correct term.
Thank you sir!
I use 87 , regula gas in my taco
Same! And that's nice because my last car was 91 only!!
Dam he said it's been 4 months and 5000 miles , lots of miles in 4 months
That’s about avg
4 months im at 7k
