- This project is off to a good start, to get going we needed to lift up the floor system and get it level, or as close to level as possible. Then we can start replacing beams and making good progress!

Follow along with this one as we swap out 30+ structural beams in all different directions and get this place in the best shape it's ever been in! There's a few shocking surprises me find as we go that you wont want to miss.. Episodes out twice a week!
I’ve been doing drafting for 20 some odd years and now my old job has offered me a sr. Estimation job. Just seeing videos like this opens my mind up to so much more. This is definitely appreciated
We're getting Gold right here. Actual on the job top class reno and problem solving!!
Broke a 4x4 lifting the corner of a single story. 20 ton HF jack. I'd use a pneumatic if you can can stay away from the jack.
When that 4x4 popped and hit me in the side of the head I did the construction wipe check and got a hand of blood. 😮
Old guy so I'm smart enough to get my face stitched now. Especially around my eyes. Take out my own stitches to save the trip.
This is exactly what most of my days were like never intended it but these were the job's I did most of them were post and beam pier failures crawling on my belly and working on my back most of the guys couldn't take the creaking and popping man some really frustrating day's thanks for sharing matt and crew
I've been a carpenter for about 35 years. For the past 14 years I've been working for a builder out of Westfield New Jersey and we have come across some old but beautiful houses. The worst was a house that was loosing a structural corner and it was dropping about 2 inches and the whole house was settling real bad. With a 3 man crew we fix and made many changes to code.I'm saying all that because it turned out to be one of the most beautiful houses on that block after we remodeled the whole house and added 3rd floor addition. I enjoyed your video because i always preferred working on old houses because of the character they have compared to the new style mcmantions .
I agree with you, the new homes are cool but these older projects make it entertaining to build.. it’s a challenge, pushes the envelope a bit.
I’ve got two in this neighborhood that’ll be huge upgrades when we’re through!
Great to see ole pops again!!
Pops is an animal! Learning from the Best Matty Boy! 👊🤙🏻👍🫡
Thankful for him, he’s helped me more than I can repay..
Like how hammers are used as a tomahawk . Million thanks, St.Paul,Minnesota.
gm Matt! Have a good day. Hopefully everything goes smooth.
Just love the detail of your videos - such skill and knowledge
Great video Matt, keep it going enjoying it all, good to see how your getting over the problems Cheers
I absolutely love your videos Matt. Watching how you and the crew go about rectifying previous building problems is amazing. I do wonder what the original builders feel if they happen to see your work?
Built in 1986, I think they’d understand how far we’ve come.. I’ll share it in a video soon, but I got the original blueprints from 1985! They’re beautifully drawn, I couldn’t believe it. I wish plans were still drawn that way..
Let's go big MATT! 👏👏👏👏👏
YOU are informative thank YOU
awesome vid.
Let's get it 💪
Want a link to the Air Jacks? They're Harbor Freights.. so I wouldn't suggest them for anything over the top, but they'll move some stuff, that's for sure.. amzn.to/3TaaZYk
Have you ever installed 12 foot wide accordion style exterior doors? I'm going to give this an attempt this summer.
Installed the doors themselves, no. Framed them, many times.
What a cluster
Right? See some of the framing at 13:03? Trying to make it all work, but some of it’s just poor craftsmanship.
@@MattBangsWood you’ve got skills you’ll get it done
Hey there mat..in one of these vids..you have a rear back up camera..do you have a link
Again i love it, but I'm struggling all the time with your measurements. I understand perfectly what you are doing. I should say, lets go Mat👍👍👍
This video was tough to follow along with measurements as I had two lasers going both with different #’s..
What tipe of laser are you using
What’s up bro. I live in Simi valley ca. Was wondering if you or a recommendation for hardy board n batten siding install for my house
👍👍
Question, I’m retired, I am still using a Skill 77 worm drive saw for the little projects I do. Which electric saw would be recommended?
The Metabo HPT rear handle is awesome, unless you have Makita batteries already. If so, I’d get the 36V Makita Rear Handle!
@@MattBangsWood thank you 😊
Sure like to know a cost for the work of that raising the floor etc
It's not cheap, but by the time we're through it'll be good as new..
Hello Matt. Been watching your videos for about over a year now.
Question: did you plum those 4x4’s on the bottle jacks? You didn’t show them on the video.
I have to level an 100 year old 3 story house in the East Coast. I was told to level those 4x4’s on the bottle jacks so they don’t buckle out under you under pressure.
We get the as close to plumb as we can. If they’re off they’ll buckle and shoot out!
👍✌
Great video!!!
What ever happened to Fox?
He’s workin’ with someone else locally!
Is this being done for a remodel? Or was the house built not safe to begin with???
This is a ‘90’s home, it’s a remodel now, but I can’t for the life of me can’t figure out what went south..
The structural design was wrong from the get go. Load calculations and specifications. Must have been a matchbook design Matt. Steel I-beams all the way!
It’s getting swapped with some monsters! Just had structural meeting, excited to see it go back together..
Were the old beams or the design structurally deficient?
They were a bit behind on the times, TJI put together don't equate to what we get with a PSL or LVL.
When tearing it apart and changing layout, it's best to improve structurally. Especially with elevator shaft going in, new walls, bigger openings, etc.
Great video Matt, Bang On 🔨 🪛
He makes me nervous having his face right there, I had to lift the basement floor to earthquake proof a tabernacle and the 6x6 post kicked out from under the bottle jack and knocked me out and sent me 5 ft back on the floor, lucky to have my face in tact…
It's not as fun when fox is not there. Lol
Miss him! He was a fun one to work with.
Only the insane housing costs of California will support this kind of renovation to add on another tiny unit. In most places it might make better sense to tear down the current structure but I’m sure that would open up another huge ball of regulation and zoning craziness to build new as opposed to a renovation. I recently saw one where the “renovation” basically left the garage and everything else went to the foundations. But if they’d built new they’d have lost a few grandfathered variances and opened themselves up to a bunch of new code restrictions. Not building codes but zoning and housing codes. So, they worked around the old garage. Crazy government.
I will agree with you.
Where is Foxy?
Wow so the original framers effed up BIG TIME!!!! And tried to hide their mistakes???? Wow. Just wow ....
Is this a new home owner that inspector spitting issues? Does insurance pay for this? City, because they allowed to pass inspection? Just wow, if I was the home owner, I'd be beyond pissed.
You guys did an amazing job. I was wondering "are those HF jacks???? Lol. And you said it. Putting trust in them!!! Don't leave for long, lol. You guys braced it up fast. Great job!!! This is not for the faint of heart jacking up a 3 story house with neighbors right there. This house was a hazard to anyone living in it!!!
Did you see what magic they worked at 13:03? What is all of that?
