I’m in my 60’s. Just over a year ago I bought a bare land farm.. No electricity grid. No water. No sewers. ….. I’m staring from scratch. Bought a tent … and now luxury upgrade. ..I now have a trailer (caravan) … I found a spring. And have now dug out some spring fed ponds which I plan to stop with trout so that I can have fresh fish throughout the year already there’s been an explosion of wildlife as a result of building, the ponds. The spring provides water. And I’ve rigged up solar panels and batteries .. I have a small area of woodland which is been a manager so there’s lots of standing Deadwood great for firewood I’ve also planted over 1000 trees. mainly Willow alder eucalyptus and Scots pine i’m also going to be establishing lots of native hedging To provide habitat for native song birds and small mammals and creating microclimates. i’m planting several hundred Rosemary cuttings and loving the cuttings to build up a herb plantation I do not use any pesticides or herbicides or fungicides or buyers sites. I also do not use any commercial or industrial fertilisers i’m making my own using stinging nettles and comfrey. i’m also building up a stock of charcoal which I will crush and mix with the worm costings from my small worm farm to produce biochar. if you read this far it will be nice to know if you think I should set up my own channel it might be nice to inspire others later in life to go for it remember When people ask you how old you are just telling me you’re 100% of your age.
Absolutely start your own channel! I just turned 69 and have been wondering if I’m too old to homestead. From the sounds of it, I just need to do it. Best of luck to you!
"You want to make a change, you got to be the change." YES! It takes that step into the unknown with a good dose of self trust and it is amazing how the Universe responds in kind. I know this from experience, some of the most "scary" steps have yielded some of the greatest magic. Thanks for sharing your journey!
My daddy was a sharecropper. Couldn't read or write. He worked for others. I have 9 brothers and sisters. We were dirt poor. My Mama worked her fingers to the bone. I'm so glad things have changed enough to make a difference. You two are genius!!!! God bless you!!!
This is very similar to my family’s story as well! I’m from a VERY busy, bustling city down south & my husband & I could not get pregnant no matter what. I was also working in the restaurant industry then software engineering and was having panic attacks literally daily from all the new traffic and construction sounds. I would just cry for hours because I felt like I was going insane. Well, that was almost two years ago. We got pregnant immediately upon moving to a small city in the upper peninsula of Michigan, surrounded by forests, and now I’m a stay at home mom planning her gardens for next year in our new house surrounded by nature-living neighbors and low to no traffic noise… And I haven’t had a panic attack since leaving my hometown. Okay, now to watch the rest of your video haha! Thank you for telling your story. I truly think more and more people could reach their true selves if they got away from the city noise and embraced the rural!💚💪🌲🌿🌸
It’s always about the stories, way more interesting than just the projects! And you have an engaging way of sharing! James, that “ be the change you want to see” was for me, lol! Actually, it’s a mantra for me, too, and I need reminding! Thanks and Merry Christmas!❤
I moved from LA to the CA Central Coast from driving 3 hrs+ on the 405 each day, to 40 min. I still work an 8 to 5 job but no noise, no traffic, and being surrounded by nature makes all the difference! Now my challenge is to meet people as I am single, so sometimes it feels lonely and isolated. Thank you for sharing your beautiful and inspiring story 🤍✨️🤗
Hola from Spain. Another new subscriber after seeing Michelle's video. We made that leap at 57 years of age, then after 16 years another at the age of 73, proving it's never too late. Surrounded by nature & mountains in Spain, living our dream life. Merry Xmas & love to you both ♥️🌲♥️
I honestly love your videos … I think I was one of the first people who joined your RUclips channel.. thanks to Janine for guiding me here .. I have not missed one video … and feel like I know you guys like family … I appreciate you sharing your lifestyle with us and your perseverance of getting your experiences out to us …thanks for sharing ❤.. Merry Christmas 🎅🏻 🤶🏻 🎄 to you and James and all your viewers
I found you from that recent video and am so glad that I did. Truly enjoy your shares and hearing your stories. Sending deep heart your way. Blessings to you on the journey. 🌲🌈✨🌸
I AM SO EXCITED AND PROUD FOR YOU!!! MY PRAYERS WERE ANSWERED!!! I'VE BEEN WITH YOU FROM THE BEGINNING, BUT LOST YOU ALONG THE WAY. WHEN I WATCHED THE VIDEO I KNEW THAT WE NEED THIS SO MUCH!!! SO I PRAYED!!! YOU BRING SO MUCH HOPE, LOVE AND CARE INTO EACH VIDEO. I WILL CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR YOUR SUCCESS. YOU ARE SO PRECIOUS, INTELLIGENT, FUNNY, LOVING AND KIND. I'M GLAD YOU RECEIVE MONEY FROM RUclips!!! YOU DESERVE IT!! LOTS OF IT!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO FOR ME AND US!!!
So glad I found you guys from Michelle’s recent video! Your story hits home for me Michelle. Moved from Chicago to rural MN and wouldn’t go back. What you represent is so inspiring and so needed in this world. Endless things to learn from nature 🌲and seeing Jame’s talent with construction, I am now discussing rammed earth projects for a sauna. I’m spreading the good news of your channel because I know there are more like us out there. Absolutely love it. Please continue sharing 😊 🙏
Just love the community feel which is missing in everyday life in the city. 🙂 More and more people are asking the right questions these days regarding growing their own crops....
So curious what lake you are on. I am a Calgarian who has my sights on getting property in the Cranbrook/East Kootenay area. My heirloom seeds are ready and waiting.
I grew up back in the sticks. We were basically feral kids that were always running around in the bush but eventually we became "civilized". Working 10-12hrs/day for 45yrs gave me a house and toys that are paid for and a very healthy pension. When I bought this house I could look out the front window and all I saw was a hay field. Now it is a golf course full of houses. Time to go feral again. Am looking for the rite property to do what I want and not what other people think I should do at this age. You only live once so just go for it.
I think that you were made for each other. 💞. The perfect match. 😉. I really enjoyed your video and look forward to following you. Happy New Year 2025 🎉
