The Netherlands dominated world trade for half a century, dug half their nation out of the ocean, and founded the world's first publicly traded company. But how did they get there in the first place?

Kinda feels like you glossed over our golden century a bit fast, like how 1672 in the Netherlands for ever will be known as Rampjaar where we where attacked simultaneously by 2 large German states, France and England and we survived. I would also argue that the Revolution of 1688 was really the moment it went down hill, with the loss of William III and a lot of great men military leaders and merchants with him, 1795 was just the final nail for the United Netherlands before its end.

Six minutes of bits of wikipedia history and a commercial in no way do justice to Dutch history. Pretty shoddy job. The inacurracies and ommisions are glaring. To name a few:
    - Naming Amsterdam as a large medieval city - it was just a fishing village at the time
    - Skipping 100 years of history and then saying the decline was because of a war with England when NL was already a french puppet-state.
    - Not mentioning Land reclaimation
    - Not mentioning the Northern renaissance
    - Lookup Rampjaar.. every Dutch person knows it.
    - Not mentioning William of Orange during the Dutch revolt, the fact that his descendent came back after Napoleon and got a different title for the same job is much less important.
    - The Dutch made way more money of the trade within Europe then outside of it.. it was not all colonies..
    - Operation Rees really? This was clearly put in to sell a book. Do you know who also wrote a book about WW2? Anne Frank, and it actually takes place in the NL..
    - Also when mention WW2 in NL please mention Canadians.. We still love them

The Dutch Revolt and the 80 Year's War are not the same thing.... The Dutch Revolt was basically a war against the Spanish Habsburg kingdom for independence (cause the Dutch wanted freedom of religion) and the 80 Years War was the result of the Dutch Declaration of independence in 1581. The Spanish King didn't recognize the Dutch Republic as independent, so he basically wanted it back lmao. The two wars intertwined in time, meaning the 80 Year's War started before the Dutch Revolt ended, but they're not the same.

3:28 I notice you put little WIC flags where the VOC didn't operate, which is a nice attention to detail, but utterly lost on anyone who doesn't already know this if you don't tell them.
Also it's my understanding that while certainly wealthy and powerful, the VOC didn't do that much for the Netherlands and it's people; Moedernegotie brought significantly more wealth to the nation and populace.

      Long story short: inheritance.
The Netherlands were part of the HRE under the Habsburg rule. Kaiser Maximilaan von Habsburg's son, Charles the Fair married Queen Johanna of Spain (her parents had united Castille and Aragorn). But Charles died quite young. So Johanna reigned as queen over Spain. But Johanna was not sane. Johanna la Loca. So Maximiliaan locked his daugter in law up and acted as regent untill his grandson Philips II came of age. Philips inherited some parts of the HRE when Maximilaan passed, including the Netherlands. And so the Netherlands were Spailnish territory.

    • @joostgoedhart2005
      @joostgoedhart2005 4 года назад +2

@@pickledbabushka5144 no, please learn your history. Most of the Low Country's (who were part of the HRE except Flanders which was part of France) were by some way inherited or bought by the French dukes of Burgundy during the late thirteenth and fourteenth century's. Maximilian, archduke of Austria and later Holy Roman Emperor, married Mary of Burgundy. Their son, Philip the Fair, married Joanna (the Mad) of Aragon and Castille (daughter of Isabella of Castille and Ferdinand of Aragon, you'll probably heard of them) but he died before his father so his son Charles V became not only the Holy Roman Emperor and king of Spain, but also ruler of Austria, the Low Country's and what was left of Burgundy (and don't forget the Spanish colonies). When he abdicated, he gave the HRE to his brother Ferdinand and the rest to his son Philip II. That's why the Dutch were ruled by the Spanish. We only didn't really like them so we rebelled against them and gained independence

kingbarneyoflondon although the reactions under your comment tell how the Spanish inherited it from the Spanish it is important to know that the Spanish inherited the Netherlands from the Bourgondians. These Bourgondians fought many wars and it took almost a hundred year to get everything under their control. To say the Spanish just inherited it is a big simplification. If you are interested how it all went down I would suggest reading about the Kabeljauw wars and the Burgundian inheritence

Great video! But I have to point out some mistakes. The VOC in itself didnt make the United provinces wealthy, most of the income came from trade in the Baltic sea, the Dutch called it the 'Mothernode' as 80% of Dutch trade income came from there. In the video is also mentionned that the VOC did trade all around the world. This is false as it was only active in the East-Indies. The Dutch company that was active in the America's and Africa was the WIC, West-Indische Compagnie and it was more of a military company than a trade one.

The Netherlands was not invaded to go around the Maginot line, after all going trough Belgium would be enough, it was to secure the ports in North and South Holland to prevent the British and French from taking them. Yes Netherlands was neutral, so was Norway and they also landed there so the Germans despite earlier promises to keep neutrality which would have helped them with Trade issues, decided to invade before their enemies could.

So the setlements in New York, Curacao and Suriname are proporty at that time of the WIC. They had the same rights and duty s as the VOC.

I have to correct you on how much wealth the VOC brought to the Netherlands. The VOC waged a lot of wars and had a huge fleet, which drove costs of operations nearly to a bankruptcy of the company. Yes, it brought spices to the Netherlands, but most of the wealth of the Netherlands came from The Hanseatic League by trading produce. Trading in the Hanseatic League was much more profitable than the VOC and brought coinage to the country, standardizing coins and contributing largely to the economic boom of the Hanseatic cities, such as Zwolle, Deventer and Groningen. The Netherlands had a lot of fertile land from claiming land from the sea. This made most of the country very wealthy. The VOC only made the VOC wealthier, but because it was largely funded by the Dutch Republic, it drained a lot of wealth from the economy which was invested in the VOC colonies.
