OMG I actually cannot believe that I won after watching this video. I've been playing for 10 hours and couldn't even make it to the third act before I watched this!! I found it really helpful that you shared your reasoning for every decision you made, which helped me a lot in making the right choices in my game. The pathing tips also helped a lot. Thank you!
For the Gremlin Leader fight: It is much better to kill his minions as that can replace the leaders action with summoning a new one instead of doing his X times 3 attack or buffing the enemy party. You take far less damage if you can kill the minions whenever you can
FYI, you have to be able to kill both the minions consistently. Because the boss can summon 2 minions at a time, if you just kill 1 and the boss summons 2, you'll end up with 3 minions to deal with.
Hey I just want to say this guide was really helpful. Lots of very helpful info given in a clear, concise manner. I loved how you explained alongside the gameplay, it made it much easier to follow along with your actions. This is how all guides should be done.
started playing blind today, spent about 5 hours in, somehow made it to act 3 - but seeing this video just changed everything I thought I knew lol. super informative and helpful, and very much appreciated from me!!
Hi mate. This is the best guide to Slay the Spire I've seen. RUclips should promote this more. Why do I keep getting rando vids of tedious millennials screeching when I search for serious guides like this?
Considering how old this game is u don’t really find a lot of videos that walk through the game for people looking for to improve their game sense and card picks. A lot of the other vids go through the game as if the viewer has played dozens of times so this walkthrough really helps a lot
For the skeptics seeing the view count before watching the video (like me): it's 100% worth sitting through. I've been so frustrated with how inconsistent most of my games were. Despite picking up and playing the game casually every now and then, I never really understood why some of my runs would crash and burn super early. I actually learned a great deal of "fundamentals" from your video that I never really bothered learning when I just kept hoping I'd get lucky with synergies and relics. Literally just easily won a run by strictly following your advice (i.e chasing elites, pathing, shop timing, strategizing for specific bosses, not taking EVERY card drops, etc.) and I had a good time trying to reason out the scenarios as you have demonstrated. The game relies more on getting that ball rolling early game than I had initially thought. Planning to build a fun synergy deck without any early benefit really had me avoiding most elite fights which stunted my ability to grow and tilted me off the planet whenever I'd lose most of my health to a simple hallway fight. Thanks again for the awesome guide!
Great tips! Thank you. Especially the final tip about "dont get stuck on an archetype" I just picked this game up on the PSN as the free plus member monthly game and I just dumped 3-4 hours into it immediately but never really made it far past act 2. This I know now is because I focused so heavily on a gimmick or archetype within each class and thought that was what would create synergy to take me far, but instead left me too narrow to take on the elite and boss fights.
I watched your vid, then immediately won my next run. Unbelievable! I used a different strategy of blocking, thorns, and Juggernaut. But your tips about utilizing potions more, avoiding too many cards, and earning as many relics as possible really upped my game!
Thank you for this very informative video good sir! You have the exact same voice than a previous co-worker and it freaked me out the entire length of the video 😂
I don't agree with your choice of carnage over whirlwind when you just used carnage to kill an enemy on 9 health. You based your choice on carnage doing more damage but then wasted it on overkill. The whirlwind would have killed him and damaged the other two.
Yeah that was a really dumb play, carnage does 20 damage for 2 energy, but against 3 opponents, a whirlwing for 2 would do a total of 30 damage and it still kills the third one too
aside from this obvious misplay, this is good info for new players. Anyone paying attention will notice the unused two mana and realize he could have done 10 to each killing the 9dmg minion and starting the progress on the next two.
I also disagree with his choice of defending over using the bash in tri sentinels. Yeah you take 13, but bash plus anger would get rid of the artifact and could have set up a bigger swing next turn
This wasn't a misplay. Yes, it was overkill but he chose to use that card so he could defend. If he had chosen the whirlwind, he wouldn't have been able to block.
@@hanyo3629 You can play the defend first, then whirlwind hits all enemies for 14. You can then set up the middle sentry with the anger dropping it to 14hp.
Finally digging into this on PS5 and this is a really helpful guide. So far I’ve only completed one run with the defect. I wasn’t sure how to get the ironclad through but this is a great guide for that deck and for the game in general. Thanks!
I kept trying to build strength decks, and lost a lot. Only once did I make it to act 3 before getting murdered by an elite lol. This video made me realize I should just try to make the best balanced deck for whatever boss I'm facing.
i got really lucky on my 3rd ever run with the silent, got loads of energy and relics and had an immense amount of cards but each turn I could use about 5/6 cards - now every other subsequent run I have barely got to the city so Im really enjoying watching this
@@danielwan2410 sneko eye is incredibly overpowered for high cost cards (bludgeon, metor swarm, etc) however it is atrocious for low cost cards. It is also super swingy but, if you build your deck for it it can be incredible. However idk that I've ever made it work in a normal run. I think once on a daily run I got it to pop off though.
Great vid, thanks! Got this game a month ago and I'm loving it. It's interesting to me to see how everyone has different styles. Some things seem to be universal (like killing the dude on the right in the tri sentries fight first), but some of it seems to be personal preference -- like I don't think Warcry is always bad? Just didn't synergize with your deck and your relics. Ironclad seems like the easiest class for a newbie to play and yet I've had the most luck with my Silent. Probably my biggest weakness as a player is wanting to add stuff to my deck all the time rather than skipping rewards (seems wasteful!), or removing cards that aren't curses.
I gotta agree with the “avoid getting trapped in archetypes” thing, if i find an early blade dance+shuriken or demon form+heavy blade, i have a tendecy to feel like i have to “commit” to building around them, and i end up missing crucial parts or losing to hallway fights that counter the build heavily
I definitely was playing to fast and because of every other video I stayed getting sucked into whatever type my first 2 cards pulled me into lol. Hopefully I can use your tips to finally finish with the watcher. She is the coolest concept to me but the only one I can't win with lol
You also don't have to care so much about curses, burns etc because you can use them to pay the cost for True Grit! (I kinda' cringed watching all those blocks die in the vid.) o.o
I have absolutely no problem with the first or second act.. they’re so easy but the 3rd is impossible. The boss on that floor charged up a 63 damage attack.. I had like 80 max and I didn’t take damage from any attack on that floor I was so strong but then I still lost to the boss on that last one.. that’s insane to me that I could enter the final boss fight with max health without healing because I was beating every elite without taking damage.. I fight that stupid 450 health guy and he hits me for 63 on a single turn.. that’s absurd.. the second boss was a joke because that’s when my deck really came to life so beating him was child’s play..
"I wish I could play Flame Barrier when he was actually attacking" "Warcry is a bad card" **cough** Fwiw, checking the map before choosing with Neow is really smart and I'm gonna start doing that now lol
Just one of many mistakes in this guide, and I did not even watch it all. Even as a beginner to StS (but a veteran to deck building games) it is apparent that as far as card choices and tactical decisions in fights go, this is not the video you want to be watching. The route planning tips were good though!
Yeah I'm still only pushing first half of ascension with ironclad right now casually, but I think you're right. Can't overlook deck manipulation, and the opportunities this guy had to snag flame barrier with headbutt and put it in hand next could have saved him a lot of trouble. Plus exhaust is a great trigger for a ton of things in Ironclad, but maybe we'll level up to this guy's opinion someday, who knows? Lol
I find winning the first part pretty easy now, it's the new final boss, the heart that I can't get past because it requires so much good RNG to get a perfect mix of cards including the 5 apparition cards for half health and a full set for a scalable attack. I can't find a reliable path to victory, so frustrating
So how do you actually slay the Spire? I’ve beaten act 3 multiple times but it just takes me to the beginning. It’s one heck of an addicting game but I feel like there is no point. Once you beat act 3 it seems like game is over and there is no advancing.
You have to collect the 3 keys, then you can advance to Act 4. The progression in the game is by unlocking cards for all characters, advancing in "ascension" levels which make the game harder. And if you beat the final boss you will unlock the optional "beta art" for cards for that character. So you have an incentive to beat them with all characters and get to the maximum ascension level 20.
24:10 you just wasted your pen nip on a strike. A better play would have been strike and then rampage. Yes you applied vulnerable, but a double damage 24 damage rampage would have shortened the fight significantly
I think they finnally fixed that which is great because the two options it gave you were the safe ones which aren't as good on average. Also, less options means you're being put at a disadvantage for losing your last run which is bad design for a roguelike. Maybe for your first runs to keep things simple but punishing players for a bad run just feels terrible from a player perspective.

The Warcries helped me cycle into what I needed more often than-not. =D But outside of this single niche situation it's definitely a pretty weak card, for sure!
