@Himiko Toga it's mostly because of how rare complete sets are. People are always missing random ass volumes that aren't in production anymore. It's why the deluxe editions are such a lifesaver.
That use to happen at Toys R Us with the WWE action figures. I wanted to get a new Wrestling figure, but a 40 year old dude shows up first thing in the morning to purchase them all for resale. What a dirt bag, but I guess you gotta make money somehow
Back when I was a kid around 7 and living in S.Korea I had a collection of dragon balls from volume 1 to end of Z. I spent the whole year collecting it, and I was excited to read them again and again. One day after school, i decided to read from the start and opened my closet but to my surprise they were all gone. I cried and ask my mom where my books are, and my mother said she simply donated all the volumes to orphanage because we are moving soon. My heart broke to pieces and cried the whole day. Now, after 20 years, I still remember my tragic past of losing the whole collection.
Omg Nooooo... How could she do that without asking ?? 😭. I remember a similar incident that had happened to me but not as traumatizing as yours. My mom threw away my few collectibles like pretty stones and rocks I collected wherever I go and few of my old sketches. Yet it made me very sad. I can imagine what you've felt.
Cousin found unopened ps1 ps2, xbox and Nintendo games. All being action and horror, it had every silent hill, every fatal fram, final fantasy, resident evil, even rule of rose. Even had opened ones you could play on, and multiple repeats because of the diff platforms. The poor lady didn't even know the worth, he got it all for 500 dollars, I wasn't there for I would've said something because it was her son's that offed himself. It was about a 50k-60k collection, it makes me sad because I truly believed the woman deserved that after his passing.

He has 2 copies of giant size xmen #1, both graded at 9.6. Stacks upon stacks of mint Xmen comics. He read them once, vacuum sealed them, and stored them. Original artwork from Stan Lee and even a prop from Star Trek he sold for $10k alone. We still have 4 boxes full of collectibles to open

This makes me remember the time I offered to buy a complete set of manga off my big sis for 5 dollars each. She opted for 50 cents a copy from a local used book shop just to spite me. It still galls me to this day.
That teal color on the old Fruits Basket volumes is so nostalgic! I never owned them, but it was my gateway manga and the local library had it. Always would beeline to the shelf full of that specific shade of green to check out the next volume. Now I have the full run of the Collector's Edition books on my shelf which are lovely, but I still miss that uniform color
I vividly remember that in early 2023, I went to a garage sale for manga. The woman working there had huge boxes of trending manga that she was trying to get rid of. She said that her daughter collected them, but she moved out and she didn’t need it anymore. I got multiple boxes full of manga for only $100 cad!
I remember getting a empty bleach box for the first box set as a graduation gift from my librarian and a couple years later found almost all the manga to go with it at a thrift store and it was a deal that day so all the book at the store were only 50c each
I got Alice19th recently myself but for a really good price on mercari. I saw that was one of the titles that was in the bin. I adore Alice19th so much and Yú Watase is one of my favorite mangakas of all time

Yeah, some can be especially great. I have a couple rare volumes I could sell for well over $100 each.... but bought for myself... from a seller who didn't realize what they had... so were probably happy getting $10 each.
